ASAM 2015 CONFERENCE NE I L D A DE TO D E D EXTEN 2015 E N U J 0 3 10-13 SEPTEMBER 2015 HILTON ADELAIDE CALL FOR ABSTRACTS From Rocket Science to Brain Surgery - Aerospace Medicine and the Neurosciences From Rocket Science to Brain Surgery - Aerospace Medicine and the Neurosciences www.asam2015.org.au #asam2015 ASAM 2015 CONFERENCE From Rocket Science to Brain Surgery - Aerospace Medicine and the Neurosciences 10-13 SEPTEMBER 2015 | HILTON ADELAIDE ABOUT THE EVENT The Australasian Society of Aerospace Medicine (ASAM) will host the 63rd Annual Conference & Scientific Meeting at Hilton Adelaide from Thursday 10 to Sunday 13 September 2015. We anticipate more than 120 delegates from Australia and New Zealand will attend. ASAM members are mainly medical practitioners with an interest in aviation and aerospace medicine, and aeromedical retrieval. Many are also pilots. ASAM has a strong representation of medical practitioners in the military. The purpose of this important national event is to provide a formal professional development meeting incorporating opportunities for health practitioners to interact, share experiences, hear other’s stories, teach and learn. This year’s conference theme is “From Rocket Science to Brain Surgery - Aerospace Medicine and the Neurosciences”. Neuroscience covers a broad range of clinical areas from diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems, to mental health, and to disorders of the special senses and perception. It is axiomatic that cognitive functioning is critically important for pilots, and any condition that has the potential to impair any of the domains of cognitive performance poses a serious risk to flight safety, for example early dementia, neurodegenerative diseases, major depression and traumatic brain injury. Disorders of vision, hearing and balance are also particularly relevant, and at times controversial, such as the debate surrounding the significance of colour perception. When considering these clinical conditions, the importance of the neurosciences in aviation medicine is clear. Abstracts submitted on topics encompassed by the conference theme are encouraged, however all papers of aerospace medicine relevance are invited and will be considered by the Conference Scientific Committee. This should make for a fascinating conference catering to a diverse range of aerospace medicine interests. www.asam2015.org.au #asam15 ASAM will apply to the RACGP for this meeting to be accredited as an active learning module eligible for Category 1 points. ASAM will also apply for CPD points from the Australasian College of Aerospace Medicine and the Australasian College of Rural & Remote Medicine. INVITATION TO SUBMIT ABSTRACTS ASAM invites you to submit abstracts for oral and poster presentations relating to the theme “From Rocket Science to Brain Surgery - Aerospace Medicine and the Neurosciences”. Papers on other issues in aviation and aerospace medicine will also be welcome. WHO SHOULD CONSIDER SUBMITTING AN ABSTRACT Anyone who practices or is interested in aviation and aerospace medicine, in particular Designated Aviation Medical Examiners, Military Medical Officers, and Specialists. ORAL PRESENTATIONS Selected authors will be invited to present their papers in an appropriate session. It is anticipated that presentations will be 20 minutes with 5 minutes for questions. POSTER PRESENTATIONS Posters should relate to either the conference theme or other aspects of aviation and aerospace medicine. Submissions may relate to accepted papers for which the authors are not invited to make a presentation, or to studies or reports for which a formal paper is not submitted. |2 ASAM 2015 CONFERENCE From Rocket Science to Brain Surgery - Aerospace Medicine and the Neurosciences 10-13 SEPTEMBER 2015 | HILTON ADELAIDE AWARD FOR BEST PRESENTATION The ‘Dr Eric Stephenson Award for Best Presentation’ will be presented for the best presentation by an ASAM member.
