Our Story
Our story begins in Canada thousands of years
ago, when our ancestors created the mukluks
and moccasins you see in these pages.
Throughout history, Aboriginal nations used
distinctive leather, furs and beadwork to reflect
their individual customs and culture.
Today, as Métis, we continue this tradition
by creating authentic, functional footwear
that connects our past with new materials
and production techniques.
Stitch by stitch, bead by bead,
we tell the story of our People.
All of our products are made in Canada.

Throughout history, Canada’s First Peoples
wore mukluks and moccasins as they thrived
in harmony with nature. As European settlers
arrived, they too adopted our traditional
footwear as a necessary tool for survival.

1870
The North American fur trade leads to
the birth of a new people – the Métis.
Manitoba becomes a province of Canada;
Métis artisans supply handmade goods for
emerging markets.
1630 – 1870
The Métis establish their own identity, with traits
of both Aboriginal and European people.

Métis siblings Sean and Heather McCormick
establish a trading post in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Aboriginal artisans trade handmade mukluks
and moccasins for the McCormicks’ tanned
leather skins and furs.

Traditional artists building
traditional businesses.
Our Storyboot Project aims to help revive
the traditional arts by creating businessbuilding partnerships with elders and artisans
who fashion mukluks and moccasins the
traditional way.
From these artists we commission original
handcrafted footwear and produce a limited
collection of replicas called Storyboots.
Through our Storyboot Project we offer a 50/50
profit-sharing agreement that turns artisans into
true partners in the business of bringing their
Aboriginal footwear to the world.
In this way we hope to help Aboriginal
communities everywhere benefit from the
knowledge of their ancestors and keep
traditions alive.
From our history,
we create our future.

Our Sole
When it came time to develop footwear for the city,
we challenged Vibram®, the world leader in high-performance
rubber soles, to design a sole that could withstand the effects
of cold and high-abrasion urban environments (min. 150 NBS).
Vibram® used 70 years of history and a rugged TC1 compound
to provide a durable, low-profile sole that could also serve
as a canvas for an Aboriginal story.
Together we build quality and tradition in every step.

TANNING
GATHERER TALL
Sizing: Foot Lining: Shaft Height: Sole: Exterior: STONE
Tanning is an intricate process that
requires time and patience.
Traditionally, our ancestors used
flat, palm-sized stones with beveled
edges as scrapers. They also used
bone, wood and trees in their work,
pulling the skins back and forth
around a smooth-bark tree until the
hide was ready for a four-day bath in
ash and water that would completely
remove hair from the hide.
After that, a time-tested mixture of
sunlight, brain-tanning and handsmoothing would dry and soften
the hide into a perfect piece of
leather fit for use as clothing, pouches
or blankets.

The Métis People wove floral art patterns
into the lives of most tribes on the Northern
Plains. These designs became a defining
cultural symbol for us. For this reason,
the Dakota Sioux and Cree called us the
“Flower Beadwork People.”
Métis women had always adorned tipis and
clothing with geometric beadwork, but the
patterns changed when Roman Catholic
missions along the St. Lawrence River
introduced the Métis to European folk art.
By the 1830s, vibrant floral designs were
found on most of our products.
Floral beadwork reached unrivaled levels
of artistry throughout the Red River region
during the mid-nineteenth century.

Birchbark art dates back to our earliest times. Add authenticity
and charm to your Manitobah display with the handmade
birchbark art of Aboriginal artist Margaret Gordon.
My mother taught me the
skills I use. I proudly continue
to make traditional crafts
in her memory today.
About the Artist
Margaret Gordon
Ojibwe, Manitoulin Island, Ontario
Margaret Gordon has been creating
traditional crafts for much of her life.
She specializes in beadwork, birchbark and quill
work and dedicates her work to the memory of
her dear departed mother, Nora Maiangowi,
who passed on these traditional skills to her.

COMMUNITY
Partnering with CAHRD
allows us to hire skilled
Aboriginal employees
as our company grows.
As our business grows, so too does our support for our
community. For years we have worked with the Centre
for Aboriginal Human Resource Development (CAHRD),
an Aboriginal non-profit organization that touches on
all aspects of Aboriginal community life.
Each year we partner with CAHRD to provide an
education bursary that allows Aboriginal students
to attend college or university. Together with CAHRD,
our hope is to bring self-determination to all Aboriginal
people through improved literacy skills and training
for new career paths, including working with us.
To learn more about how CAHRD supports Canada’s
Aboriginal community, please visit: www.cahrd.org

Made in Canada
Our authenticity is our ancestry.
At Manitobah, we aim to make the world’s most comfortable,
authentic traditional footwear. To achieve this, we manufacture
our products in Canada, where Aboriginal footwear has been
made for thousands of years.
Keeping production close to our ancestral home allows us
to remain authentic. And, of course, a made-in-Canada label
expresses our support for ethical working conditions, fair wage
labour and time-tested quality.
