ABORIGIN OWNED AL MADE IN CANADA 2011 COLLECTION Our Story Our story begins in Canada thousands of years ago, when our ancestors created the mukluks and moccasins you see in these pages. Throughout history, Aboriginal nations used distinctive leather, furs and beadwork to reflect their individual customs and culture. Today, as Métis, we continue this tradition by creating authentic, functional footwear that connects our past with new materials and production techniques. Stitch by stitch, bead by bead, we tell the story of our People. All of our products are made in Canada. e b , h c t i t s y b h c t i t S o f o y r o t s e h t l l e t we Throughout history, Canada’s First Peoples wore mukluks and moccasins as they thrived in harmony with nature. As European settlers arrived, they too adopted our traditional footwear as a necessary tool for survival. 1630 1870 The North American fur trade leads to the birth of a new people – the Métis. Manitoba becomes a province of Canada; Métis artisans supply handmade goods for emerging markets. 1630 – 1870 The Métis establish their own identity, with traits of both Aboriginal and European people. 4 1990 Métis siblings Sean and Heather McCormick establish a trading post in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Aboriginal artisans trade handmade mukluks and moccasins for the McCormicks’ tanned leather skins and furs. , d a e b y b ead . e l p o e P our Today Manitobah partners with Vibram® to develop a high-abrasion sole for the urban market and launches a project to create business-building partnerships with elders and artists in Aboriginal communities. 2008 1997 The McCormicks register a Canadian corporation and begin manufacturing Aboriginal footwear. 2006 Manitobah Mukluks’ global brand office is established in Canada’s Capital Region. International sales partnerships are created to meet growing demand. Hollywood stars are photographed wearing the company’s products, creating interest from all corners of the world. 5 Traditional artists building traditional businesses. Our Storyboot Project aims to help revive the traditional arts by creating businessbuilding partnerships with elders and artisans who fashion mukluks and moccasins the traditional way. From these artists we commission original handcrafted footwear and produce a limited collection of replicas called Storyboots. Through our Storyboot Project we offer a 50/50 profit-sharing agreement that turns artisans into true partners in the business of bringing their Aboriginal footwear to the world. In this way we hope to help Aboriginal communities everywhere benefit from the knowledge of their ancestors and keep traditions alive. From our history, we create our future. 6 ANNIE MCKAY MUKLUKS Product Number: Sizing: Foot Lining: Exterior: 2050150 Women’s 6-11 Sheepskin Cowhide, Moose Hide LIMITED EDITION REPLICAS INDIVIDUALLY NUMBERED My mother would be happy to see traditional arts play a role in making communities self-sufficient. - Gerald McKay Artists at Work Elder Vivian Moose (red shirt), Shirley Ducharme (wearing blue) and traditional artist Hilda Moose reintroducing handcrafts at the Oscar Blackburn School in South Indian Lake, Manitoba. Vibram® used 70 years of history and a rugged TC1 compound to provide a durable, low-profile sole that could also serve as a canvas for an Aboriginal story. Together we build quality and tradition in every step. 10 1 About the Artist 2 Heather Steppler Wolf Clan, Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation Heather Steppler’s maternal ancestors were musically, artistically and spiritually inclined and include traditional birch bark biters and medicine women. Traditionally, our ancestors used flat, palm-sized stones with beveled edges as scrapers. They also used bone, wood and trees in their work, pulling the skins back and forth around a smooth-bark tree until the hide was ready for a four-day bath in ash and water that would completely remove hair from the hide. After that, a time-tested mixture of sunlight, brain-tanning and handsmoothing would dry and soften the hide into a perfect piece of leather fit for use as clothing, pouches or blankets. MÉTIS MUKLUK Sizing: Foot Lining: Shaft Height: Sole: Exterior: CHARCOAL CHARCOAL CHOCOLATE TAN BLACK The Métis People wove floral art patterns into the lives of most tribes on the Northern Plains. These designs became a defining cultural symbol for us. For this reason, the Dakota Sioux and Cree called us the “Flower Beadwork People.” Métis women had always adorned tipis and clothing with geometric beadwork, but the patterns changed when Roman Catholic missions along the St. Lawrence River introduced the Métis to European folk art. By the 1830s, vibrant floral designs were found on most of our products. Floral beadwork reached unrivaled levels of artistry throughout the Red River region during the mid-nineteenth century. On our leather-sole shoes, we do not use a shoe last to heat or steam the material around a standard shoe form. Instead, our rolled toe piece forms naturally to the shape of each wearer’s foot, providing an age-old comfort you can call your own. Each year we partner with CAHRD to provide an education bursary that allows Aboriginal students to attend college or university. Together with CAHRD, our hope is to bring self-determination to all Aboriginal people through improved literacy skills and training for new career paths, including working with us.
