In every life, there is a certain amount of darkness. Whether one is a baby and is dealing with an uncomfortable wet diaper; or whether one is graduating college and is unsure of their direction in life; or whether one is faced with an illness and is struggling; all of us encounter darkness in our lives. And yet, while a certain amount of darkness is a natural part of life, there can also be incredible lights. There are wonderful moments where we can feel connected, uplifted, and full. There are moments where we can connect deeply with another person, and there are moments when we can encounter the Divine. One of the spiritual challenges of life is to continue turning toward the light. This is not always an easy task, and indeed, sometimes the darkness can consume us. Our mind can be consumed with fears, uncertainties, and doubts. Sometimes even our physical discomfort can be overwhelming. While it is certainly important to acknowledge the hardships of life, it is also very important to pay attention to the light. Sometimes, we will literally have to force ourselves to get up and shift our attention to something else. Other times, friends and loved ones can be a tremendous support in helping us to shift our attention. In either case, there are so many lights for us to focus on. The Source of all has created so many beautiful positive things, and people have created so many wonderful healthy ways in which we can spend our time. Chanukah itself can help inspire us. It can help remind us that “it is not by military might, nor by physical power, but by My spirit.” (Zechariah 4:6) It is through spirit, through will of mind that we can make the decision to take control, light the candles, bring in the light, and dispel the darkness. It is our spiritual strength that can help us be successful in overcoming these spiritual challenges. It is our spiritual strength that can help us overcome the darkness and bring in the light. This is one of the most important lessons of Chanukah: In spite of the challenges and the darkness that we face, through our spirit we can create light and dispel the darkness. Rabbi Moshe Smolkin [email protected] Kislev-Tevet 5773 December 2012 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE “In tribute to his memory I pledge to perform acts of charity and goodness.” As I was preparing to write this column, I received two very different items of news concerning OZS. First was the good news that OZS, as a congregation, not just as individuals, would be participating in the Tzeason of Tzedakah organized by the Jewish Federation of the Bluegrass. I decided that my column would center on that idea. Unfortunately, that good news was all too quickly followed by the terrible news of the tragic death of OZS’s treasurer, and my friend, Johnny Perel. How could I not address that event, which has such a direct impact not only on many of us as individuals, but on the congregation as a whole? I then realized that there was a connection between the two things, in the words of the Yizkor prayer we recite in memory of our beloved family and friends, the key phrase of which, in the version from Siddur Hadash, opens my column. As Jews, we are very familiar with the idea of tzedakah, although we tend to translate it in a very narrow way, as charity, rather than in its true meaning of justice or righteousness. We tend to be very generous in our monetary gifts, to OZS, to JFB, to local charities, or to national or international organizations, both Jewish and secular. While such monetary charity is vital, most of us, for various reasons, often neglect another aspect, the giving of our time and energy to help people directly. OZS, in fact, provides several notable opportunities for this sort of tzedakah, such as Faith Feeds, in which members glean unsold food from local farmers’ markets to be given to food banks, and Backpacking for God’s Pantry, where we assemble packages of food for the weekend to be distributed to children (and their families) who receive free lunches during the school week. With just a few hours a month, we are able to help a significant number of people in need. OZS has also, over the past few months, participated in a building project for Habitat for Humanity. These have always been successful, but additional volunteers are always welcome, and could help us expand these efforts. Each year, in December, the Jewish Federation of the Bluegrass organizes the Tzeason of Tzedakah, during which members of the Jewish community of Lexington help our needy non-Jewish neighbors during their holiday season. Most often, we have participated as individuals. This year, however, JFB has asked the local congregations to each organize volunteers for a specific charity, and OZS, as Lisa Satin has recently announced, will be working with the Catholic Action Center’s Christmas Store, which provides free toys to needy families. We will be helping to set up and staff the store. I urge as many of you as possibly can to sign up to participate. Please see page 5 for contact and signup information. Part of the Jewish tradition of tzedakah is to make charitable donations in the memory of our loved ones. I would like to do something similar with Ohavay Zion’s participation in this year’s Tzeason of Tzedakah, and dedicate it to the memory of Johnny Perel. May his memory be for a blessing. - - - Jon Glixon President SHABBAT SERVICES: DECEMBER December 14-15 2 Tevet November 30-Dec. 1 17 Kislev Young OZS-ers’ Shabbat at Bardach home 6:00PM Shabbat - 9:30 am Bima: Shirley Bryan Shabbat 9:30 am Kids’/Youth Shabbat Hanukkah Party 5:00PM Bima: Lisa Satin Bima: Simone Salomon Miketz 24 Kislev December 21-22 Vayishlach December 7-8 Family & Friends Shabbat at Home Vayeshev Shabbat -9:30 am Bima: Howard Rackmil 9 Tevet Young OZS-ers’ Shabbat 6:00PM Shabbat - 9:30 am Vayigash Bima: Lisa Satin December 28-29 16 Tevet Family & Friends Shabbat at Home Shabbat - 9:30 am Veyechi Bima: Ricki Rosenberg Kislev-Tevet 5773 December 2012 SISTERHOOD SISTERHOOD TRIP Join us Sunday, December 30th, for a drive to Louisville’s Frazier History Museum to see the “DIANA a Celebration” Exhibit ITINERARY 8:50 a.m. Meet in front of the Wal-Mart Grocery Store to carpool to Louisville (Palomar Shopping Center -Man O’ War Blvd. & Harrodsburg Rd) 9:00 a.m. Leave Lexington 10:30 a.m.-Noon “Pay your own way” Brunch 12:30 p.m. Arrive at the Frazier Museum 1:00 p.m. Diana Exhibit 3:30 p.m. Meet at designated area (to be announced) 5:00 p.m. Arrive back in Lexington TICKET/ADMISSION IS $15.00 PER PERSON RSVP BY DECEMBER 12TH TO [email protected] or call Carol Kaplan 224-0710 Please make checks payable to OZS Sisterhood (in the memo line please write Diana Exhibit) and mail to 2048 Edgewater Ct, Lexington, KY 40502 Page 5 SOCIAL ACTION OZS BACKPACK PROGRAM WITH GOD'S PANTRY Future dates for backpacking sessions: Sunday, December 9, 11:30 AM Sunday, December 23 or 30, 11:30 AM (TBA) For more information about Backpacking, contact Brian Derer at [email protected] Program link: http://godspantry.org/aboutus/our-programs-services/the-backpack-program/ God’s Pantry - Food sorting Join representatives from the Jewish community at God's Pantry - (1685 Jaggie Fox Way, phone: 2556592) on the third Thursday of each month, from 7:00 (time change thru Dec) to 8:30 PM to sort food to be distributed to the homeless, assisting God's Pantry in fulfilling the needs of the hungry in Kentucky.
