I Got a Star
By Tamara Tsurkan
In my folk
art paintings
I tell fairy tale
stories about
animals. This one is
about a cat who
loved to watch
stars, and her two
friends who
decided to
get her one for her
birthday. The use of
vivid bright colors
makes the painting
even more
memorable. The
paintings measures
6 by 12 inches and
is done in acrylic on stretched canvas. The sides
are painted as well, so there is no need for a frame.

Astronomical Powerhouse
By William Bennett
This piece represents a very powerful neutron star—a Magnetar—clear on
the other side of our galaxy, 50,000 light years away. Although only 20 miles
in diameter, its activity can be felt here on Earth. The artist uses aluminum
tubes and discs, aluminum mesh, wire, chrome bearings, brass bearing,
onyx, watercolor and glass tubing. The name of the piece is represented in
binary notation on the
piece. The artwork is 20
x 25 inches by 2 inches
in depth.

Whoo? The Owlman
By Clarence P. Cameron
These owls represent a few of the over
fiy original pewter designs created by
Madison’s Owlman, Clarence P. Cameron.
Pewter is tin which has been alloyed
with small amounts of copper and
antimony. For casting, the original of each piece can be created
from clay, wood, plastilene, or even soapstone, and a mold of
vulcanized rubber is formed around it. Clarence uses both the
gravity method of casting and spin-casting; pewter is melted in a
small kiln or with a propane
torch and poured
from a cast-iron ladle into the
mold. Aer casting,
he removes seam lines and
rough-sands the

highlights. He then “pickles” the sculpture in boiling vinegarwater to remove impurities from the surface. Next Clarence
oxidizes the sculpture in a nitric acid solution, which turns it
black. He removes oxidation from all areas except the details, and
buffs the highlights. Lastly, he hand-polishes the finished owl.

Aer making fertility figures
for years, this piece was
conceived during a sad
transition. Five years ago my
wife’s sister died, young and
unexpectedly, and I was asked if
I had any jars that would be
suitable for her ashes. In life she
had been a very artistic person
and I wanted to make something
that she might have appreciated.
I started with the idea of “ashes
to ashes and dust to dust” and
thought about how we all come
from mother earth and, in the
end, go back to her. I ended up doing a whole series of these
pieces, which are wider, covered jar versions of my
fertility/mother goddess figures. It somehow felt right using
a similar image to represemt coming into this world and
leaving it. It is pinch and coil stoneware, with a wood ash
glaze.

I have been making different
kinds of “Tea-for-Ones”
for many years. It began
when I sat down to
consider the
possibility of making
a ceramic tea
ball/strainer. Aer making
actual tea balls, covered cups
and even trying coffee dripper solutions,
I tried this simple draped strainer. I liked its elegant look
and simple lines right away and was delighted to find that it
worked very well for almost any leaf tea. This set has a cup,
saucer, and strainer; it was formed using a pinching
technique. It’s high-fired stoneware, with a wood ash glaze.

Bricks of Life
By Bjorn Sjogren
Bricks of life is what life is all about.
Sometimes there is happiness and joy,
other times there is sadness and grief.
The silver lining between the bricks is
the oil which makes it work
anyway....The year was late 1996 and
my wife was diagnosed with breast
cancer and was given one year to live.
The summer of ‘97 I was painting in
my studio. But I was not happy with
the piece I was working on, so I cut it in half and started to paint on the
back. One aer one, the bricks came out—and this brick of life was created. I
used gouache on Arches watercolor paper. The size of this open signed
