NEWSLETTER 28th May 2015 T E R M 2 I S S U E 8 Principal’s Message - Mr Ian Fraser DIARY DATES ThisMondayistheWADaypublicholiday,wherewecelebrateourstateandallofthe wonderfulthingsthereareaboutlivinghere.Itisadaywherewenotonlylooktothe pastandthosewhohavegonebeforeus,butalsotothefutureandthehopeswehave forourchildren.Asawayofre lectingonWADayandtheimportantrolewehaveas parentsandteachersinraisingthecitizensoftomorrowIamincludinganextractof theWADaypledgeofProfessorJonathanCarapetis,headoftheTelethonKids Institute. Mon 1st June Public Holiday “IpledgethatonWADayIwilltakethedayoff.Whenmychildren(eventually)wake up,Iwillnotstartpesteringthemaboutallthechorestheyhavetodotoday,because theywillhaveadayofftoo!ImightevenwhipupabatchofFrenchtoastforbrekkie toputtheminagoodmood.IwillenjoythethingsaboutWAthatmadeourfamily wanttomovehere3yearsago–thebeautifulopenspaces,thebeaches,theforests, thedeserts.Incontemplatingtheimportantthings,Iwillspendtimewithmyfamily. Wemightrideourbikes,gotothebeach,playsomebasketball,cookupastorm,and maybewatchamovietogether. Thurs 4th June Assembly Rm 6 2nd—5th June Year 11 & 12 Exams Whichbringsmetothemostimportantpartofmypledge.It’saboutchildhood.Why? BecauseifWADayistocelebratewhat’sgreataboutWA,thereisnothingmore magni icentthanourchildren.Withallduerespectstoironore,oilandgas,theenergy thatrunsourstatecomesfromourkids,andWA’sfuturedependsonusdoingthe rightthingsbythemnow.I’mnotjusttalkingaboutthefactthattoday’skidsare tomorrow’sleadersandworkers.It’smorethanthat.Weknowthatourhealthduring allofourlifespan,evenourchancesofgettingfatorhavingheartattacksinmiddle age,areincrediblyin luencedbywhathappensintheearlyyears. AmItheonlyonewhocringeswhenIlooktothenexttableatarestaurantonlytosee thekidsplayingontheirelectronictoyswhiletheirparentschattoeachother? Don’tgetmewrong–Idon’tyearnforthe“goodolddays”.Themodernworldhasso manywonderfulopportunitiesthatweneverhadaskids.Butlet’srememberthat childhoodisanessentialdevelopmentalphase,onethatallowschildrentoexplore, developandlearn,buttodosogradually.Ourjobasadultsistopreservechildhood forallourkids,andtohelpthemmakethemostofthosewonderfulyears. So,Ipledgeasaparenttolove,protect(butnotover‐ protect)andadvisemychildrenastheyworktheirway towardsadulthood. AndIpledgeasaprofessionaltoensurethatthe TelethonKidsInstitutecontinuestodoeverythingitcan tomakethekidsofWAthehappiestandhealthiestin thenation.” School Website: www.exmouthdhs.wa.edu.au PAGE 2 JUMP ROPE FOR HEART Hearts Pumping Wednesdayafternoon20thMaywasa buzzinghiveofactivityforthePrimary SchoolstudentsatExmouthDistrictHigh School.ItwastheannualJumpRopefor Heartevent.Eachclassparticipatedin ivedifferentskipping activities.Someactivitiesincludedblindfoldjumpingofwhich therecordwas27.Therewaspartnerjumping,runningin, jumpthesnake,eggbeaterandmanymore.Somestudents werecreativeandmadeuptheirownroutines. HeartdiseaseisthenumberonekillerofAustraliansand participatinginJumpRopeforHeartgiveseachstudentan awarenessofthisdisease.Studentshavetheopportunityto activelymakechangesintheirownlivestopreventthis disease.Makingregularexerciseandhealthyeatingdecisions goodhabitswillgiveourstudentsthebestchanceatlivinga healthyandlonglife. Congratulationstothosestudentswhofundraisedforthis event.Atotalisnotyetknownsoifyoustillhavefundsyou haveraisedpleasedropthemintothefrontof iceassoonas possible.Ourschooltargetwas$500andsofarwehave exceededthisamount.
