2015
INVITATION FROM THE CEO
It is with great pleasure that I invite you to attend the St John Experience 2015,
which features our Annual State Conference, Awards Sundowner, St John Ball and many
more events during the three days in August.
The theme this year is “World Class, Leading the way”.
The promise of our annual conference is to bring
together paid staff and volunteers to celebrate this
great organisation and its family of contributors, as
well as to showcase those aspects which make the
organisation truly a world class one and leader in its
field. This year’s conference will once again deliver
on that promise and I invite all St John people to
attend and take advantage of what is on offer.
The content and format for the two days of the
conference itself will be the same as in previous
years. We have a line up of pre-conference events,
expert speakers and guests at the conference
(including Dr Ross Walker, back by popular
demand), as well as informative and educational
sessions/presentations relevant to a range of roles,
all mixed in with guaranteed moments of fun and
prize giveaways (thanks to the generosity of our
many suppliers).
As in previous years, the Friday night of the
conference will be devoted to honouring the
service of many of the organisation’s paid staff and
volunteers. Significantly, for the first time, we will
be awarding Lifetime Association Certificates at the
Awards Sundowner to recognise connections to
the organisation that have spanned from 50 to 70
years.
The conference culminates, as it always does, with
the St John Ambulance Ball - the theme of which,
this year, is inspired by Disney. Tickets for all remain
2
heavily subsidised and the Ball itself provides a
great opportunity for spouses and partners to
connect with St John and enjoy a good night out.
The opportunity afforded by the conference – to
come together – is always important, especially
given the growth and changes at St John in WA
over recent years. There is no better time, then, for
St John people right around the state to visit Perth
and be rewarded by a meaningful experience which
demonstrates why St John WA is world class;
informs of the journey how we got there and how
we maintain that standard; and advises why other
services are so keen to imitate us.
Please join us between 13 and 15 August as
we reflect upon our truly unique, world leading
organisation. Come and meet friends and
colleagues, forge new networks, learn things
you did not know previously, and enjoy the
experience.
I look forward to
seeing you there.

GUEST SPEAKERS
As well as State Office presentations and displays we are also very excited with the great line
up of guest speakers we have booked for you:
OUR MC - Richard Fidler
Richard Fidler is a broadcaster who has had several lives as a musician, writer and performer.
He currently hosts the very popular Conversations with Richard Fidler on ABC Radio in Sydney,
Brisbane, Adelaide, Hobart and Perth. This unique format allows Richard to talk at length with
a single guest for an hour and follow that person’s life story.
Richard has interviewed Prime Ministers, former CIA agents, ex-prisoners, astronauts,
comedians, carers, and Antarctic explorers. Many of his guests are famous names, but most of
them are people you’ve never heard of, who have seen and done extraordinary things and that
may be on a space shuttle, at the bottom of the ocean or within their own neighbourhood.
In another life Richard was a member of comedy group The Doug Anthony Allstars (DAAS),
which played to audiences all over the world. Since then Richard has presented a very wide range of TV shows,
from Race Around the World, to Aftershock, a series on technology and the future.
GUEST SPEAKER - Jeff Kennett AC
Graduating third in his class in Officer Training, Kennett’s military career included a position
as Second Lieutenant, acting as commander of the 1st Platoon, A Company, 1st Battalion,
and the Royal Australian Regiment. Upon leaving the military, he started his own successful
marketing company before being elected to government office in 1976. For over 23 years, Jeff
Kennett has been a proud member of the Victorian Parliament, holding the position of Premier
of the State from 1992 to 1999. After two terms in this position, Kennett left politics, working
with several charities and acting as chairman for a number of companies.
Throughout his career, Kennett has held the position of chairman for the Board of Management
of PFD Food Services Pty Ltd, Open Windows Australia Proprietary Limited, CT Management
Group Pty Ltd and the depression initiative, Beyond Blue. He has also acted as the Director of
Equity Trustees Limited and Jumbuck Entertainment Limited, and was the President of the Hawthorn Football Club
from 2005 to 2011. For his work in politics, for his community, and for his country, he was awarded the highest civilian
honour, Companion of the Order of Australia, in 2005 as well as an honorary doctorate by the University of Ballarat.
Although no longer in politics, Kennett is still loved by supporters across the country, and is often described as
visionary. With a deep-seeded respect for his country and its people, Kennett is both passionate and well-spoken. In
March 2013, he was announced as Seven’s new national political commentator.

THE ST JOHN
EXPERIENCE
2015
GUEST SPEAKER - Dr Charlotte Middleton
Dr Charlotte Middleton, Bachelor of Medicine and Surgury (BMBS), Diploma in Child Health
(Dip CH) is an Integrative Medical Practitioner specialising in Maternity, Pediatric, Nutritional
and Environmental Medicine. Her professional achievements are equally matched by her natural
charm, making her a wonderful communicator with an extraordinary bedside manner that
resonates as well on-screen as it does off-screen.
Graduating in 1997, Dr Charlotte has worked in Neonatal, Pediatric and Maternity Health in
various hospitals around Australia. Currently working in a busy Sydney hospital Maternity Unit
she is responsible for all antenatal and post natal mums and their newborn babies. She also
works part-time in General Practice, continuing her work in Women and Children’s health with
a focus on Nutritional and Environmental research and practice.
Her natural presenting skills have seen her share her knowledge as the medical expert on Foxtel’s ‘The Little Things’ hosted
by Antonia Kidman, and indulge her on-screen passions by developing and presenting many medical educational, corporate
and promotional videos. A medical educator throughout her career, she has created a series of 7 highly regarded and sought
after maternity educational DVDs on common post-natal issues, which are already used with great success in all Ramsay
Health Hospital Maternity Units and by parent educators Australia-wide.
Excited about the opportunity to share her knowledge and passion on good health and well-being with women around
Australia, Charlotte has recently teamed up with celebrity yoga and fitness expert Kate Kendall to create the nutritional
component of a new product - Xpress Body Makeover - a breakthrough holistic exercise, eating plan and in-depth support
weight loss system developed for Australian Health Sciences Pty Ltd. Together they have combined their many years of
research into providing a system that gives sustainable weight loss, shapes and tones your body, as well as boosting your
energy and health levels overall. More a way of life than a diet and a good health message that Charlotte is passionate about.
Charlotte’s insatiable thirst for knowledge means she is continually adding to her medical qualifications and experience
- a Diploma in Child Health, the Primary Course at the Australasian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine and
numerous holistic health care/medical seminars and workshops every year. A Diploma in Nutritional and Environmental
Medicine is next. She lives in Wollongong with her husband and two young children.
GUEST SPEAKER - Dr Ross Walker

Considered one of the world’s best keynote speakers and life coaches, he is the author of
seven books (all of which have been best-sellers). Dr Walker is also a regular presenter on the
Nine Network’s Today Show, A Current Affair, and has most recently appeared as the medical
expert on Excess Baggage. He also presents on radio stations 2UE, 6PR, 4BC and 3AW.
Over the past 20 to 30 years, we have seen the emergence of the wellness industry, offering
‘wellness’ in many forms. Wellness centres, health magazines, internet sites and a variety
of products promise cures for everything from wrinkles to Alzheimer’s disease and even
haemorrhoids. Throughout the world people are spending millions of hard-earned dollars
each day on these products and services, hoping to look younger, feel younger and live
longer. But does any of this stuff work or is it just a sham?
In Five Stages Of Health, respected cardiologist and media personality Dr Ross Walker debunks the myths and hype of
modern health and gives you the facts you need.
