a little already you’ll learn more.
Prerequisites: 1. You are really enthusiastic about
math.

Origami
is led by Annick O’Shaughnessy— For grades 4 – 9
This activity will introduce campers to the
Japanese art of paper folding. Origami is fun
and requires only paper and some patience to
produce quite impressive sculptures. The group
Explorations 2015 — Intermediate Program
will progress from simple folds to more complex
models. We will turn ordinary sheets of paper
into flapping birds, cranes, sailboats, books, stars,
wreaths, sonobe jewels, cubes, double dice, ninja
stars, simple flowers, several modular models,
letter folds, planes (of course!), business card
structures, along with many more models. We
will learn how to fold a sheet of 8½” × 11” sheet
of paper and, with just a few easy folds, knowing
where to cut, make it into an equilateral triangle
without the use of a protractor or compass… then
we will turn it into a Star of David or a snowflake.
The many bases and technical jargon of Origami
will be used throughout the class enabling students to pick up an origami book and follow its
directions for themselves afterwards. Come and
join us in transforming a simple piece of paper into
something quite amazing. You will impress your
family and friends.

Soapstone Sculpture and Clay Animals
is led by Heather Hancheruk — For grades 6 – 9
Chip, carve and file away at a stone called soapstone (no, it is not made from soap, it’s an actual
stone taken from the ground). The Inuit people
of
the North traditionally use this material to make
carvings of animals and people from their environment and culture. I will teach you how to take
a block of stone, and shape an animal from it,
using rasps, files and chisels. Once the sculpture is
shaped in detail, it is dry sanded, then wet sanded,
until smooth to the touch. The last step is to spread
mineral oil over the entire sculpture, until it is
shiny, and the natural colours of the stone show
through. We will take two full Explorations weeks
to make the sculptures, in an hour and a half
period every morning. Additionally we will sculpt

Professor Bradley Siwick studies something
called Ultrafast Science. If that doesn’t sound cool
enough, his research involves watching atoms
collide and his recordings are often referred to as
“molecular movies”.
Entomology
McGill’s Lyman Entomological is the second
largest insect collection in Canada and includes
2.8 million bugs! They even have a live insect
laboratory.
With bee populations declining around the world,
the McGill Apicultural Association is devoted to
increasing awareness and interest in bees. They
look after bee hives that are set up on the McGill
campus and teach courses on how to care for your
own honeybees.
Astrophysics and Aerospace Engineering
McGill astrobiology professor Hojatollah Vali
investigates certain biomarkers that could suggest
ancient biological activity in extraterrestrial materials. One of the courses Professor Vali teaches
even includes a unit that explores whether ufo
sightings are science or legend!
With Montreal being the world’s fourth largest
center of aerospace manufacturing, McGill’s
Institute for Aerospace Engineering is an amazing
place to get a look at what exactly “rocket science”
is really all about.

Geology
Professor Reinhard Hesse studies deep sea
geology. He investigates giant rock samples drilled
from the ocean floor, looking for tiny microscopic
creatures in the sediments.
Ingrid Birker is the curator of the invertebrate
fossils and plants at Redpath Museum. Some
of the programs she runs at the museum are so
popular she’s gotten calls from people across the
country wanting to attend!
Immunology and Natural Resource Science
Professor Nathalie Tufenkji’s research team at
McGill is testing how maple syrup could be used
to fight drug-resistant bacteria. She has also
studied using cranberry extracts to kill infectious
bacteria.
Assistant Professor Jessica Head is interested in
understanding and predicting how environmental
chemicals can impact the health of wild birds. She
is concerned about the thousands of chemicals that
could cause harm to wildlife which are contaminating our environment. She is working to save the
birds – what could be better than that!
Enrollment is limited to 20 senior campers. This is
an all-day program for either 2 weeks or 4 weeks.
Priority will be given to campers who register for
4 weeks.
