This masterpiece is a 15”x20” artists’ book featuring sixteen watermarked images in handmade paper by Katharine Nix, and the tale ‘Three Roses’ by renowned fantasy novelist Garth Nix. Katharine expanded on her son’s story with a singlepage post text of her own, a beautiful homage to native plants of Australia. Housed in a momigami slipcase (folded in fourths) and produced in a small edition of twenty copies, it is “one of the finest artists' books ever produced in Australia” says AbeBooks (who offer a copy for $5000). ‘Three Roses’ is a fable about the nature of love, set in a medieval land. A gardener lovingly cultivates roses only to have them stolen by a covetous king. Threedimensional prints on the cover and title page depict two heraldic dogs guarding a rose bush whose roots entwine into a heart; the cover image is enhanced with gold leaf. The watermarks, on thinner sheets, are set into negative shapes removed from the heavier rag text paper. Some of the watermarks are linear; others are chiaroscuro using a modern foam technique borrowed from Neal Bonham. For visibility, each watermark is interleaved with a dark paper. The handset Bodoni type was printed letterpress. From the coptic binding to the center-spread pop-up to the chine-collé detail below the colophon, this book is a testament to the beauty of handwork. Even the slipcase button clasp was hand-turned in brass. An international award winner, this signed copy is number 19 from the edition of 20. Other known copies are held by five major libraries, four private collectors, two dealers, and of course Katharine and her son.
