Sugeta, Handmade and Unused
Donated by Tom Weideman
Shipping Weight: 5 pounds from 20704
Estimated Value: $900.
Starting Bid: $300.
This beautiful piece of craftsmanship produces sheets
that are approximately 14x17 inches. The su is sewn
with silk on very fine bamboo splints. The wood is cedar.
Such quality work is hard to find now. The donor
purchased this lovely sugeta at the Su Ho Paper
Museum in 2007 while visiting Taiwan. He carried it all
over Asia--Hong Kong, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand-and ultimately back home to California. This sugeta has
seen the world, but alas, has never made paper, yet!
Deckle2Go Unit
Donated by Maxine Apke
Shipping Weight: 4 pounds from 20704
Estimated Value: $350.
Starting Bid: $100.
A papermaking tool for teachers, artists, and students,
Deckle2-Go allows individual and unique sheets of
handmade paper to be formed in one single vat. This set
includes a second deckle which fits the unit's mould,
thus, a two-in-one tool. Made of lasting polycarbonate
and virtually maintenance free, Deckle2-Go is selfcontained, which eliminates the need for a charged vat.
To make paper, Deckle2-Go is set into a water filled
container, pulp is added to the unit, water from the
container comes up through the screen to help disperse
the pulp. Every 9x12 sheet can be different! View a
video demo at http://deckle2go.com

three, over and over.
McCurdy Engraving, Direct from Block
Donated by Robert Hauser
Shipping Weight: 1 pound from 20704
Estimated Value: $100.

copy of the magazine.

“The Garden” artists’ book by Katharine Nix
with “Three Roses” story by Garth Nix
Donated by Katharine Nix
Shipping Weight: 8 pounds from 20704
Estimated Value: $3000
Starting Bid: $600
‘The Garden’ tells a touching short story, in a book of
epic proportions! This masterpiece is a 15”x20” artists’
book featuring sixteen watermarked images in
handmade paper by Katharine Nix, and the tale ‘Three
Roses’ by renowned fantasy novelist Garth Nix.
Katharine expanded on her son’s story with a singlepage post text of her own, a beautiful homage to native
plants of Australia. Housed in a momigami slipcase
(folded in fourths) and produced in a small edition of
twenty copies, it is “one of the finest artists' books ever
produced in Australia” says AbeBooks (who offer a copy
for $5000).
‘Three Roses’ is a fable about the nature of love, set in a
medieval land. A gardener lovingly cultivates roses only
to have them stolen by a covetous king. Threedimensional prints on the cover and title page depict two
heraldic dogs guarding a rose bush whose roots entwine
into a heart; the cover image is enhanced with gold leaf.
The watermarks, on thinner sheets, are set into negative
shapes removed from the heavier rag text paper. Some
of the watermarks are linear; others are chiaroscuro
using a modern foam technique borrowed from Neal
Bonham. For visibility, each watermark is interleaved
with a dark paper. The handset Bodoni type was printed
letterpress. From the coptic binding to the center-spread
pop-up to the chine-collé detail below the colophon, this
book is a testament to the beauty of handwork. Even
the slipcase button clasp was hand-turned in brass.
An international award winner, this signed copy is
number 19 from the edition of 20. Other known copies
are held by five major libraries, four private collectors,
two dealers, and of course Katharine and her son. View
it online at http://hdl.handle.net/10462/comp/1110

A illustrated and hand lettered accordion manuscript
from the collection of Helen Goldberg. Eighteen panels,
