Large Tapa from Tonga
Donated by Katherine Crump
Shipping Weight: 8 pounds from 20704
Estimated Value: $300.
Starting Bid: $100.
The Polynesian state of Tonga in the south Pacific contains 177
islands including one called Ofu, in the Vava'u Group. Here in
1992 a sailor obtained this beautiful tapa, and gave it to
papermaker Kathy Crump. It was a prop in her papermaking
classes at the University of the Pacific for many years, and now
it can be yours! Tapa is a type of bark cloth, a proto-paper
made by pounding the inner bark of trees. This piece has been
decorated with traditional island motifs using a rust-brown dye,
and it is HUGE, measuring just over 6 x 18 feet!
Intimate Shifu Art
Donated by Maria-Carolina Larrea
Shipping Weight: 1 pound from 20704
Estimated Value: $200.
Starting Bid: $50.
This lovely and touching artwork measures only 3.5 x 4.5
inches but its universal concept and centuries-old technique
make it seem larger. Shifu is a type of woven cloth produced
from handmade paper yarn spun from washi. This piece is
made of kozo fiber. It is entitled “Omikuji” and features a
woman grasping for hope in the form of paper fortunes. The
artist, Maria-Carolina Larrea, is a Chilean papermaker and
educator. She teaches paper as a medium of expression as
well as artist book classes, and she is helping to create the first
university-level papermaking and bookbinding program in
Chile. Her work is exhibited internationally.
Kimono-Style Work Garment
by Fukunishi Washi Studio
Donated by Mina Takahashi
Shipping Weight: 2 pounds from 13830
Estimated Value: $500.
Starting Bid: $150.
This handsome item is made of 100% handmade kozo paper,
naturally dyed with cherry blossoms, and coated with
konnyaku paste so it is durable and water-resistant for wear in
the papermaking studio. Now a collector's item, its value has
been estimated between $500 and $2000. The garment is
accompanied by a description, hand-scribed in Japanese by
Fukunishi Hiroyuki, along with an English translation (see
photos). This item is donated in honor of Fukunishi Hiroyuki,
who sadly passed away in August 2014. He was a consummate
craftsman and an inspired teacher and mentor. In 1978,
Fukunishi was designated as Holder of the Craft of the
Intangible Cultural Asset of Udagami, a specialty handmade
paper for mounting scrolls. His son Fukunishi Masayuki
continues the tradition and is active in exploring the use of
natural dyes to broaden the range of paper available from the
Fukunishi Washi Studio.

Donated by Richard Langdell
Shipping Weight: 10 pounds from 20704

at his mill in Vermont. No longer a vatman, he has donated
these beautiful sheets of handmade paper, all 19 x 25 inches.

and many that are decorated with natural inclusions. There are

small supplies and focuses now on large custom equipment.
“Parts of the Body” Artist Book
Donated by Jane Farmer
Shipping Weight: 2 pounds from 87513
Estimated Value: $500.
Starting Bid: $175.
Helen Frederick created this evocative bookwork with poet
Buck Downs and letterpress printer Gordon Fluke at Pyramid
Atlantic from 1991-1993. Parts of the Body is an extended love
poem in fragments, cast in the image of a radio continually
retuning itself to station after station in a flurry of quotation,
interruption, and talk. It is a technical tour-de-force which
insists on personal contact at all of its many points. Helen’s
eight etchings provide a luxurious counterpoint to the frenetic
text they accompany. An innovative binding designed by John
Wood and Laurie Snyder further underscores the velocity
which Parts of the Body compels us to assume; a series of
single-page signatures held together in a near-weightless
configuration. The text was handset in 12 pt. Weiss Roman by
the author and printed on okawara, a classic Japanese paper,
with wrappers and ribbon of flax paper made by Helen from
materials grown at Pyramid Atlantic. The book is held in the
collection of the Museum of Modern Art. It measures 9.75 x 10
x .75 inches. It is signed by the artist and the poet. The edition
is 50 copies; this is number 49.

This is an old and delicate stencil that was made of hardy kozo
coated with kakishibu (fermented persimmons) in order to
waterproof it. It measures 17 x 44 inches and has a netting of
threads for stability in the open areas of the stencil. It might
be used again with some TLC, but it is quite fragile and
probably best for educational purposes and/or exhibition. It
was previously rolled, and is now folded in half for shipping.

2002 issue of Hand Papermaking magazine.

Illustrated Indian Treasures

Estimated Value: $200
Starting Bid: $50
The first item is an illustrated and hand lettered accordion
manuscript with eleven panels, each 3.25 x 8.25 inches,
containing Sanskrit text on both sides written in a script called
Devanagari; there is one illustration that appears to be a
mythical figure dancing around an infant. The second item is a
smaller accordion with seven panels, each 3.25 x 6.5 inches;
this item contains allegorical illustrations on both sides. We
know little about these mysterious pieces generously donated
from the collection of Helen Goldberg. The age is unknown.
The paper is probably handmade. If anyone knows more,
please share!

Sures/Whitehead Pulp Painting, “Conversation Piece”
Donated by Lynn Sures and Beck Whitehead
Shipping Weight: 4 pounds from 20904
Estimated Value: $2500.
Starting Bid: $500.
Beck Whitehead and Lynn Sures, the directors of the noted
2010 Pulp Painting Symposium in San Antonio, Texas,
collaborated on this 18 x 24 inch pulp painting in 1999. It
combines their favorite techniques and imagery. The primary
fiber is abaca, and the coloring agent is pigment. Beck and
Lynn created a scene from the American West which contains
elements of their own individual artistic identities. Look at the
cloud formation, the bright red hill, and other clues to the
artists' personal contributions. Lynn and Beck feel this is a
complete collaboration, uniquely joining their love of the land,
their joy in its inhabitants, and the pleasure of play into a
landscape seen fully only in the minds of creative viewers.
