Modern Art
800.11 Art 0.6 CEU
Using the Los Angeles County Museum’s exhibition,
“Variations: Understanding Abstract Painting Today,” as
a point of focus, this course examines the roots of
abstraction in 20th century art, explores its range of
form and content, and considers the manner in which
artists working in the early 21st Century have been
reanimating the techniques, forms, and meaning of
abstract paintings, many of them doing so through the
use of collaged imagery and materials. A particular area
of concentration is women artists working in this mode,
among them Mary Weatherford, Lesley Vance, Amy
Sillman, Dona Nelson, and Laura Owens. Other artists
discussed range from Wassily Kandinsky and Jackson
Pollock to Gerhard Richter, Christopher Wool, Mark
Bradford, and Mark Grotjahn.

Da Vinci: His Women and Machines
800.311 Art 0.3 CEU
Leonardo da Vinci’s integration of science with art
resulted in several extraordinary works, including his
most celebrated painting, The Mona Lisa. The
endearing qualities of his charming ladies delight our
eyes as they move through harmonious compositions,
gentle realism, exquisite proportions and shimmering
color to a heightened experience of High Renaissance
ideals. Leonardo spent his later years sketching
mechanical inventions of his own design. His imagination produced a kind of helicopter, a tank, a
parachute, a primitive machine-gun, a mechanical
computer, the so-called “Robot Knight,” and many
other fascinating mechanisms. This class explores
these 2 chapters in his artistic life, their connection,
and important historical impact.

Modern Art: Impressionism to
Abstract Expressionism m
X 448.8 Art 3 units
The decades spanning 1850 to 1950 mark some of the
most radical changes in the history of art. This course
traces the chronological development of modern art
from Impressionism to Abstract Expressionism while
asking critical questions about the nature of art, the role
of the artist and work of art in society, the experience
of the art object, and the growing trend towards
abstraction, while paying close attention to social,
cultural, and political contexts. Instruction examines the
unique character and experience of modern life and,
through the visual analysis of artists like Vincent van
Gogh, Edvard Munch, Marcel Duchamp, and Jackson
Pollock, addresses issues, such as gender, urbanism,
culture, the middle class, alienation, and industrialism,
that are present in the various movements. &

Classical Oil Painting in the Style of
the Venetian Masters
X 428.2 Art 3 units
Materials list sent upon enrollment.
Designed for advanced students, this studio course
explores the oil painting techniques of the late Renaissance, with particular focus on the bottega of the
Venetian masters of color. Students are guided through
a series of exercises designed to help them create a
highly finished “masterpiece.” Working from both
reproductions and a live model, students first touch on
canvas preparation, ground, and under painting; then
learn brushwork, impastos, scumbling and glazing,
sfumato and chiaroscuro, and the use of warm tones
and cool tints to create refined form. Finally, students
learn the effects of bitumen, patinas, and varnishes to
obtain the same rich, deep textures characteristic of the
originals. Discussion covers materials, composition, and
lighting; art history and anecdotal information about the
artists; and how knowledge of classical art can open
doors in the contemporary art world. Prerequisite: Previous figurative drawing experience. Enrollment limited.
