PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
AND HEALTH
Control Your Weight
Looking to get to or stay at a healthy weight?
Both diet and physical activity play a critical
role in controlling your weight. You gain
weight when the calories you burn, including
those burned during physical activity, are less
than the calories you eat or drink. When it
comes to weight management, people vary
greatly in how much physical activity they
need. You may need to be more active than
others to achieve or maintain a healthy weight.
To maintain your weight: Work your way up
to 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic
activity, 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity
aerobic activity, or an equivalent mix of the
two each week. Strong scientific evidence
shows that physical activity can help you
maintain your weight over time. However, the
exact amount of physical activity needed to do
this is not clear since it varies greatly from
person to person. It’s impossible that you may
need to do more than the equivalent of 150
minutes of moderate-intensity activity a week
to maintain your weight.
To lose weight and keep it off: You will need
a high amount of physical activity unless you
also adjust your diet and reduce the amount of
calories you’re eating and drinking. Getting to
and staying at a healthy weight requires both
regular physical activity and a healthy eating
plan.
Reduce Your Risk of Cardiovascular Disease
Heart disease and stroke are two of the leading
causes of death in the United States. But
following the guidelines and getting at least
150 minutes a week (2 hours and 30 minutes)
of moderate-intensity aerobic activity can put
you at a lower risk for these diseases. You
can reduce your risk even further with more
physical activity. Regular physical activity
can also lower your blood pressure and
improve your cholesterol levels.

Spotlight brought to you by The Arc
Northwest Indiana Public Relations
Department . . . look for random spotlights
each week.
Do not rush because you are
tiredor in a hurry. This is really the
most basic safety tip, and all the
other ones, at least to a certain
degree stem from this one.
2. Be careful moving large pieces of
furniture and appliances.
Use
proper lifting technique, keeping
your back straight and lifting with
your legs. Also, wear shoes when
moving heavy items so you don’t
hurt your toes.
3. Be safe while on ladders and step
stools. Do not lean too far to either
side. Also, have someone available
to hold the ladder steady and wear
non-skid shoes.
4. Be careful when walking on wet
surfaces. Everyone knows know
easy it is to slip on a wet floor.
Also, warn others to keep them
safe.
5. Keep stairs, landings and walkways
clear of boxes, bags and other
clutter away from walkways to
prevent someone from tripping on
them.
6. Don’t carry too much stuff at once,
especially on stairs. Make sure you
keep a hand free to hold onto the
stair railing. Also, whether you
have stairs or not, always make sure
you can see over the load you are
carrying so you do not trip.
7. Always follow product label safety
instructions and recommendations.
Cleaning supplies can create nasty
fumes, so make sure you get some
fresh air by opening windows,
turning on the exhaust fan or
placing a fan in the room. Do not
mix ammonia and bleach together,
because they create toxic fumes
when combined.
8. Wear a mask when cleaning dusty
areas. This may seem like overkill
to some, but if you are at all allergic
to dust this tip is very important.
9. Do not leave buckets filled with
water around your home. Even if
you need to take a quick break
make sure you empty that cleaning
bucket, or at least put it in an
inaccessible area.
Even small
amounts of water are a drowning
hazard for small children.
10. Put away all your cleaning supplies
when you are done.
Cleaning
supplies are an attractive nuisance
for children and pets, something
inviting that they should efinitely
not be getting into. Put the cleaning
products away in a childproof
cabinet for your children’s safety
and well-being as soon as you are
done with them.
Your membership in our local Arc also
comes with memberships on the State and
National levels. You will receive regular
information from all three organizations. By
becoming a member, you help your leaders
address the needs of persons with intellectual
and developmental disabilities and send a
clear and strong message to lawmakers that
they cannot forget us.
Membership forms are available at each
center or by contacting the Public Relations
Department at 219-985-6562 or 219-9856560.
