WORK OBJECTIVE:
Performs technical work enforcing the Land Development Code, Code of Ordinances, International
Property Maintenance Code, other codes or ordinances and Florida State Statute 162 as necessary and
does related work as required. Considerable tact and courtesy are required in frequent contact with
property owners, citizens, tenants, business owners, division staff, department staff, department
managers, the department director, other City departments, City officials and other governmental
agencies. Work is performed under the supervision of the Planning Administrator.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The successful candidate will possess knowledge of and the ability to enforce Land Development Codes,
Code of Ordinances, International Property Maintenance Code, Chapter 162 of Florida State Statutes and
other codes or ordinances as necessary. The candidate must also possess the ability to read and
interpret blueprints, site plans and designs, and ensure compliance with appropriate ordinances and
codes. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, investigating complaints regarding violations and
initiating Code Enforcement action as necessary; inspecting and re-inspecting properties to ensure
compliance with applicable codes; preparing a wide variety of formal and informal legal documents to
property owners, business owners, Circuit Courts and other related parties regarding Code Enforcement
violations; issuing citations and presenting cases to Circuit Courts when necessary; and Attend monthly
Special Magistrate evening meetings to present findings as they pertain to code violations.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:












Conducts visual inspections of properties suspected of violating building and/or property
maintenance codes in the City
May issue notifications and citations to property owners/banks and discuss plan of action as
required
Photographs and documents all violations as observed
Documents and notes case files and makes recommendations for assessments or fines as may
be appropriate
Conducts research for investigative work for code cases
Performs computer tasks and data entry
Prepares cases for hearings
Attends Special Magistrate hearings
Issues verbal and written notices of violation via citizens’ complaints and interoffice initiated
activity
Reads and replies to e-mails and phone calls
Interacts with other departments and staff
Performs other related duties and functions as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or a minimum of one
(1) year experience with codes, laws, ordinances, enforcement, or the legal profession; or equivalent
combination of education and experience. Possession of FACE (Florida Association of Code
Enforcement) certification at Level I, II and III preferred, or ability to begin certification training within six
(6) months. Valid Florida driver license or must obtain a Florida driver license within 30 days of
employment. This is medium physical work requiring the ability to exert 50 pounds of force occasionally,
up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work
requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, grasping, and repetitive
motions. Ability to climb ladder as needed.
