Summer Student Position - Surrey, BC
The Opportunity
Duties and Responsibilities:
Based out of the Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) BC
Coastal Field Office (Surrey), this term position will
provide an excellent opportunity to learn about and
work in the field of Conservation – Civil Engineering.
The successful applicant will use their education in
civil engineering towards the development and
management of wetland habitats throughout the
Lower Fraser Valley and Vancouver Island regions.
Field Operation and Management of Wetland Conservation
Projects
 Work with DUC engineering staff to complete major
and minor repairs to water control structures and
associated works
 Assist DUC in recording and supervising the progress of
contractors during the construction of new projects
 Assist DUC staff in the daily operation of water control
structures, documenting and inspecting dykes on
existing projects, maintenance activities on existing
projects such as installing signs, vegetation control,
repairing trails, walkways and gates, trail / road
maintenance, removing beaver debris, day-to-day
operations of pumping facilities of existing projects on
the Lower Mainland
The successful applicant should have knowledge of
civil engineering, survey techniques, GPS-based
technologies, computer programs such as the
Microsoft suite of programs, design software (an
asset), various equipment operation (see below), and
previous construction work site experience. DUC will
provide the necessary field equipment including: 4WD
pickup truck, tools such as mowers, brush cutters,
chain saws, generators, chest waders, survey
equipment, and cameras as required.
Requirements




be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of
employment;
have been registered as full-time students in the
previous academic year and intend to return to school
on a full-time basis in the next academic year;
be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance
with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and
regulations; and,
must have a valid current driver’s license (in good
standing) and a current driver’s abstract
Administration of Wetland Conservation Projects
 General office duties may include: assisting with
wetland file management, cataloging engineered
drawings, entry or retrieval of computer data
(including scanning), background information gathering
for contract preparation and project completion
requirements, as well as assisting with on and off-site
meetings and/or functions




Tentative term is from May 19 to August 31, 2015
Pay range: $16 per hour, based on a 40-hour work-week
(plus 4% vacation pay)
This position is contingent upon receiving external
funding.
