Chase was established in 1996 as a manufacturer of high quality, specialist cricket equipment. All the cricket bats are handmade on site at the Dummer Down Farm workshop in Hampshire and the willow used, the finest salix alba caerulea, is sourced locally allowing us to pay close attention to the weight and grain structure of the clefts. In addition to the full range of cricket bats, Chase also offers the full complement of cricket equipment. MANUFACTURING Every Chase bat is made using traditional craft methods which means each bat is treated individually. The willow has to be compressed to produce a hard surface to withstand the impact of the cricket ball; over-pressing the blade can be detrimental and produce a blade too hard which will not perform. The blade is pressed to between 1500 lbs and 2000 lbs per square inch with one to three passes. After pressing, the splice is cut into the shoulder end of the blade to accept the handle. The cleft is then expertly shaped using drawknives, spokeshaves and wooden block planes. A radial block plane is used to shape the flanks on the Finback. The handle is shaped using a rasp taking care to create that classic oval handle. The blade and shoulders are now carefully sanded on inflatable sanding drums. Hand sanding with three grades of sandpaper achieves a very high finish. The edges of the bat are boned to make them more resilient to damage. The bat is then held between centres whilst the handle is bound using high quality twine; applying PVA adhesive seals the twine and strengthens the handle. Burnishing the blade with Hampshire chalk and bees wax gives a high gloss finish. The bats are then carefully labelled; these are designed in-house with a minimalistic approach so most of the bat can still be seen. Scotch 3M 365 adhesive is used to adhere to the most dramatic shapes. Bats are then fitted with a UK made latex grip which are far superior to imported grips in colour and feel. Finally, each bat is run through our custom made knocking-in machine which covers the whole surface of the blade and edges. During the machining of the cleft, some minor blemishes may appear on the reverse of the bat, for example, pin knots, bar stains or dead knots. These bats have a teflon coating on the reverse which makes them very hard wearing and totally protected from moisture. The face of the bat should be treated normally with oiling and anti-scuff. SIZE CHART GRADES The R11 FLC (four leaf clover) is our exclusive bat, selected from only the top 4% of our willow giving it limited availability. The R11, our flagship bat, hand selected from premium quality, naturally seasoned, grade one English willow. The R7 is hand selected from unbleached, naturally seasoned, grade two English willow. The R4 is hand selected from unbleached, naturally seasoned, grade three English willow with minor blemishes. BESPOKE Chase offers a bespoke service normally reserved for the professional cricketer. When you purchase this option you will come to the workshop at Dummer to watch your bat being crafted. Customers are involved throughout the whole process from choosing the willow cleft to having a hand in the pick-up, weight, handle size and overall shape.
