They, then, use their racquet to rally the ball against the fence and attempt to hit the ball into a hoop attached to the fence above net height. The coaches will be using all the instruction from fruit salad and add footwork, contact above hip height and to the side. Students will hit forehand and backhand groundstrokes. Students to stand on either side of the net, student 1 will stand next to a hoop with balls. Student 2 will stand facing student 1 with a racquet in their hand. Students will side-‐skip around a witch’s hat, and, then, turn to be side on and hit a forehand or backhand with a step-‐down pivot (depending on which side the witch’s hat is on). Students to throw 8 balls then change throwing to the backhand side. Students do the same on the backhand, this time placing the racquet on the ground and students picking up with their LH then adding the other hand for a double handed backhand. Students swap position after all balls have been thrown from the hoop. There will be a focus on moving to contact the ball to the side and above the hips. Then, they will recover. Partner Work. Risk Assessment Coaches should make sure students are well spaced in all activities and make sure students move balls in dangerous areas. There is a risk of injury in Tennis Darts because students may chase balls into another student’s area. Coaches should clearly outline the areas where students are allowed and provide access to balls where students don’t need to cross areas. Serving Scoring Class 9-‐14 year olds Intermediate Content Students will participate in four games during the 60 minute lesson. There will be short breaks for drinks and discussion. Resources 12 flat markers, hoops, 2 baskets of green tennis balls, 6 hoops, 6 velcro ties and tennis racquets. Game & Focus Time Content The Fence Drill The students will improve their footwork, communication skills, and understanding of space and doubles roles. 10 min Pairs and Half Class 2 baskets of The students play in pairs, threes or fours. There on tennis balls. should be a focus on the recovery after the student touches the fence: crossover and then side-‐skips. Forehand and Backhand drill Students will be able to: Hit the ball down the line or cross court with topspin. 15 min There are two teams. Two students from each team feed (ideally, hitting a backhand if they are in backhand position and practising good technique). Each student gets to hit four balls aiming to hit the balls in the designated tramline (the Senior Coach designates either the down-‐the-‐line or crosscourt tramline). You could use the witches hat near the centre of the court, so the hitter is encouraged to turn side-‐on (like the drill you talked about). It is necessary that the player counts how many times they successfully hit the ball into the correct tramline. After the four balls have been hit, the hitter will get to take as many witches hats down and place it in the target tramline. If he/she hit three balls in the tramline, he/she gets to place three witches hats in the tramline. The first team to knock over a witches hat wins the game. Ideally, if the feed happens down the line the hitter should hit crosscourt, as this encourages them to “hit into space”. Class Organisation & Risk 2 games per court -‐ 2 feeders = 6 students per court There are risks that students will hit each other if people at the back are too close to the baseline, and that the feeders will be hit by tennis balls. Resources 2 baskets of green tennis balls, 4 witches, 40 witches hats Game & Focus Time Content Class Organisation & Risk Death by Smash Students will improve their groundstrokes. 15 min Groups of 6 2 baskets of Students treading on balls or green balls. getting hit by a racquet because there are too close to the baseline when they’re waiting for their turn. Doubles: King-‐of-‐the-‐court Students will be able to: play tiebreakers, serve, hit groundstrokes 15 min 1-‐4 students singles and 5-‐6 students doubles. A doubles pair (challengers) start at the baseline. The ‘champions’ feed the ball and a rally commences if the challengers win the point they receive a shortball to hit an approach. If they win the subsequent rally, they receive an overhead and if they win this rally they become the champions. The coaches’ roles could be to start as champions, to be a feeder (whilst coaching the champions) or to be coaching the challengers. Depending on numbers, the person who makes the mistake is out, or the doubles team is out. Tiebreakers – Focus on creating trouble, getting out of trouble or avoiding trouble off returns. Assistant Coaches pack away remaining nets. Divide the students into pairs. Each student has 30 seconds to teach another student 3 things that they learnt. They then have to find another partner and teach them 3 things (these could be the same 3 things or they could incorporate learning from their previous partner) Partners & Whole Class Students line-‐up Develop listening, focus and reflection skills 3 min Resources 4 students playing and 1 umpire + Green tennis one ball boy/girl per court. balls Treading on balls. Game & Focus Age 12 year olds to Adults Students will use footwork and balance to effectively hit defensive, rally and offensive groundstrokes. There is a risk of treading on balls. Basket of yellow tennis balls Patience Students will be able to: Rally consistently with depth. Defend depth and width. Attack short-‐balls. Stay balanced through the stroke. 20 min Trouble is a singles game. There are different variations depending on whether there is 1, 2, 3 or 4 students in the class. The game starts with two players attempting to hit groundstrokes deep. Once a player has hit three balls deep, she can hit the ball short or volley. If a player hits the ball into the service boxes before the three deep shots, the other player is allowed to hit the ball anywhere in the singles court and can volley straight away; this player also receives 2 points if they win the rally. If a player hits the ball out (deep or wide), the other player should PLAY ON, if the player playing on wins the point she receives 3 points. How and where should players defending, rallying or attacking hit the ball? Show the students different balance moves for defending (mogul, side-‐kick, one-‐
foot pivot or reverse spin), rally (step-‐down pivot, low spin, two-‐foot pivot) attack (step-‐down pivot, kick back).
