2015-16 OFFICERS
Hi Everyone!
Well, I just wanted to thank all of you who voted in our
elections and because of your input we will be starting
this New Year with a most fantastic board! I want to
thank our outgoing board members for their dedication
over the past several years to support our club. As you
know, these are voluntary type positions and those who
serve give up much of their time to make this club better
for YOU, THE MEMBERS.
Please start looking at our social calendar now as Nona
has planned some wonderful events to keep us all connected through the off-ski season months. Come out and
mingle with us at our happy hours that Jeannie plans for
us each Friday. Let's make Steve Archibald's golf event
in May a huge tribute in his memory. I don't even golf
and I am definitely going to honor Steve and his huge
contribution to Fall line Ski Club over the years. Also,
please take time to come to our Mixer Meetings at
Pennsauken Country Club. The staff there has been very
accommodating to the club to prepare specials for dinner
before the meeting with our fabulous server, Jessica. You
can come out and get specials prices as a FLSC member
for your dinner and drinks.
I also want to thank all the members for their wonderful response to our email weekend trip survey. The Winter
Trip Committee and the Board appreciates those that took
the time to fill it out for us. It is important to hear what
you have to say. If you have any ideas of how to make

membership fee is $25.00 until August 31, 2015 and $30.00

ATCO TO MARGATE BIKE RIDE 2015

Big Sky, MT (ESPC Carnival Trip) – January 16-23
Mark June 6 on your calendar as Fall Line makes its
annual trek to the shore. This is a leisurely ride (average
speed 12-15 mph, but go at your own pace) to Maynard’s
Café, at 9306 Amherst Ave, in Margate, NJ. It’s about 55
miles and is a great training ride for those contemplating
the ACS (which is the following weekend) and MS-150
rides in October. We start at the NJ Transit station in
Atco. The parking lot is
off of the northbound
lanes of Route 73. We
begin to arrive around 8
AM for an 8:30 departure. The route
goes
out
Jackson
Road to Atsion Rd., down
206, into Hammonton, through
scenic Mays Landing past Lake
Lenape, Egg Harbor Township, Somers
Point, and crosses 2 bridges into Longport before the final push up to Margate. Along the way,
we’ll stop for breakfast in Hammonton, a quick beverage
at Testa’s in Mays Landing and maybe a stop at Dairy
Queen in Somers Point. Directions are provided. We
hope to have a support vehicle (calling John Steel!! We
would be delighted with your presence once again!) for
those who decide to take the easy way down. I will ask
for a donation from the cyclists to compensate our support drivers for backing us up.
For the trip home, we continue biking up to the Atlantic City rail station at the Convention Center. Cost to return to Atco with your bike is about $5.00. The trip is
asphalt all the way, although most of the riding will be
on the shoulders so it may not be all that smooth. I’d
like a head count, so if you’re interested, please dust off
your bikes, pump your tires, and e-mail me at

Thursday brought blue skies with plenty of sunshine
which was a great day to head over to the Canyons. After
a day of skiing we all met at Murdock’s for a happy hour.
Vail Resorts kicked in a little something to help pay for
the happy hour.
Friday was another blue ski day where many headed
over to Deer Valley. Not only is Deer Valley famous for
their groomed trails but, they are one of the few places
that does not allow snow boarders. Not sure which one I
prefer but, for those two reasons Deer Valley is one of my
favorite mountains. Some found another reason to love
WESTMONT PUB CRAWL
SATURDAY, MAY 2ND AT 1 PM
Normally we request you to pray to the snow gods for
up coming outings but we’ve had a long, cold winter so
on May 2nd we are hoping for warm sunshine as we make
our way in Westmont for an afternoon pub crawl. Of
course, rain will not stop us!
We will meet at PJ Whelihan's at 1pm to taste a few
brews before taking a two-minute walk to the Irish
Mile. From there it is only a nine-minute walk to the Pour
House. The Keg and Kitchen is just a short two minutes
away. We are looking to end our tour at Brewsters where
there is music and a pool table.
Close to Brewsters and across the street is free parking. We plan to park there and walk down to PJ Whelihan’s so our car will be where we will end. Parking is also
at the Westmont PATCO High Speed Line station or you
can take the train to Westmont to avoid driving.
Every place we are going to has good food selections
along with beers so we can grab a bite to eat to start and
dinner to finish.

That night a group started at The Cabin. Many stayed but
some walked over to Collies for a bite to eat.
After a long day of skiing on Saturday, everyone was
sad that it would be our last day so we headed to High
West Distillery to partake in their famous batch of vodka
drinks and some wonderful food. Laura K, Bob A, and
condo mates Franklin C & Scott S held a “clean out the
condo” party. To make things interesting they planned a
scavenger hunt. The winners were Fran D, Craig D, Harry
S & George M getting all items on the hunt. Way to go
guys!!
I think this was one of my top favorite ski trips. Aside
from the accommodations and conditions we had a fabulous group of people who made it even more enjoyable. I
hope all that made this trip and many that didn’t will be
on the next adventure. As of the reading of this article the
winter trip committee has already put together next year’s
trips. Hope you will be on one with me! I would like to
thank everyone who helped load & unload the bus especially Bob A. I would also like to thank Ken H & Marianne
S for shuttling people around that was a big help!

rain and warnings of lightning storms were occurring. As
threats of shutdowns to the gondola and major lifts were
pending, the experienced mountain guides were working
hard to provide us with alternative routes in an effort to
continue our group tours.
Some of the guides were able to stretch the tour into
the California side of Heavenly, but the luck was starting
to run out. The rain was prevailing, lightning storms were
on the horizon, and at 1:00 PM we were “politely” evicted
from skiing at Heavenly as the mountain was closed. But
back East we heard , New England was getting blanketed
with snow as the Pacific was being pelted by rain.
Fall Liners Making the Best of It...
Realizing that the weather was beyond their control,
the Fall Liners saw this afternoon break as an opportunity
to get an early start on shopping and relaxation. It would
just be a few hours before then next happy hour and some
extra party food from the welcome reception.
Getting Our Rewards + A Party…
On Monday, the inconvenience of being booted from
the mountain Sunday was about to be rewarded. It was
another day of very mild temperatures and rain at town
level. But all we needed to do was hop into the gondola
for our ride up to the 9,000’ level to find over 8” of fresh
powder along some spectacular vistas of Lake Tahoe. The
group had a very good day out on the slopes.
Later that day, following our “regular” gathering for
happy hours, it was time for Fall Line’s club party. We
convened at the Straw Hat Pizza eatery located in a
neighboring casino. It was time for more socializing and
checking notes on the group’s ski day over drinks and a
plethora of food. But a trip through a casino would never
be complete without trying one’s luck on the
“equipment.” For one lucky couple their small investment
in a slot machine paid off with a return in excess of $100.
It was like getting paid to take a ski vacation.
Why Ski at Just One Resort When You Can Hit Three?
A benefit of our great ski week at Heavenly was that
we had the options of enjoying two other top ski resorts –
Kirkwood and Northstar. And when you combine all three
destinations for a total of more than 10,000 acres, to some
degree, we were able to ski an area nearly twice the size
of Vail. During the week the Fall Liners took excursions to
both of these areas.
Having some more expert runs, and lacking the full
village footprint, Kirkwood is a bit like skiing at Colorado’s
Arapahoe Basin (“A-Basin”). Except that it is about 2-1/2
times larger. A-Basin has the East Wall and Kirkwood has
The Wall.
Rated as a “double expert” from its 9,400’ peak and a
narrow cornice entrance, The Wall emptied into some rather nice bowl skiing. Wide open and under those early
spring conditions and a brightly lit blue sunny sky, the
Kirkwood experience was one not to be missed.
         Fall
For a different type of variety, and perhaps a bit more
relaxing, our Northstar excursion also was one not to be
missed. With its village shops, outdoor ice rink, eateries
and village hotels, Northstar had that flavor of being at
Beaver Creek, Colorado. But the Northstar mountain footprint offers more than twice the amount of skiable acres.
For all the mild temperatures and early thaw conditions,
more than 90% of Northstar was open. It was just another
sunny day in paradise for the Fall Liners.
And The Week Just Kept Getting Better…
For the balance of our week, as the east coast and the
Boston area continued to deal the big chill and more precipitation, our weather and conditions were just heavenly
for early February. By Friday, spring skiing was in full
bloom as Tahoe town temps teetered in the 60’s. On the
mountain it was warm enough that clothing really became optional. Although some of the guy skiers were just
out there in skins, it was the “Cali-gal” outfits that were
catching a few eyes. All of those “outfits” had to be outdone by that gal skiing on Heavenly’s California slopes

Packing it in and Packing it up…
Friday afternoon seemed to come quickly and this
group’s week at Lake Tahoe was drawing to a close. But,
of course it would not be complete without our daily happy hour in the brightly lit hotel atrium. It was a time for
more bonding, smiles, laughter and reflections over more
drinks and snacks.

loaded into our tightly luggage-packed shuttle for the 90minute trip to the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. It
was just another sunny, blue sky mild “spring” day in
February as the Fall Liners awaited to board a Southwest
flight back to Philadelphia after one more pass through
Las Vegas.
But We Did Arrive - Didn’t We?
It was a long travel day by the time that we returned
to a frigid, snowy Philadelphia. By 9:45 PM we were at
the gate at PHL and anxious to “deplane”. As we all know,
if you safely made it this far, the next step is a walk in the
park as the exit procedure is rather simple. But that was
not going to be on this night.
The outside weather was enough of a factor that the
Jetway could not be moved and we could not be offloaded. The fix was to move the plane one gate to the
right. As passengers were standing and beginning to remove items from the overhead, we now had to sit down
and prepare for takeoff as the aircraft was being towed
just to the next gate. Because we all wanted to just get
home, this delay probably took about 25 minutes, but felt
much longer. Our ski week at Lake Tahoe now became
one of fond memories.
I would like to extend a special thanks to everyone on
the trip for making my job fun and easy.

membership application. All you have to do is check the information to make sure it
is still current; then either mail your application (instructions on application) or
bring your application to the next mixer meeting with your check for $25.00 and
