Page 6 FANNY BAY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION Fannybaycommunity.com FBSES May 2015 By Judy Ackinclose Our 8th annual festival “The River Never Sleeps” will be held on Sunday May 3rd at the Rosewall Hatchery. It is a rain or shine event, guaranteed to be fun and educational with music and food. Lots to see and do! Our hatchery has just completed the addition of 5 new tanks to one of our raceways and that should be it for renovations! It is time to get back into the creeks to monitor and look at the need for restoration. With 26 creeks in our care it is very difficult to tackle them all, that is where our wonderful volunteers put on their boots and take on a creek! Should this be something that interests you – come to the hatchery and explore the possibility. Our hatchery volunteers are working smolt fences at Mud Bay Creek and at Cook Creek which will indicate how many smolts have survived in these creeks over the last year and a half. It also enables us to see what other creatures travel the creeks such as red legged frogs, salamanders and the occasional water shrew! All this information goes to DFO as part of stock assessment. Trees are being potted up in preparation for fall when a great number of volunteer groups all over the island are recipients of our labours. AGM is on Thursday May 14th, 7 pm at the Rosewall Hatchery, everyone welcome!! If you missed The River Never Sleeps Festival and would like to help or see what is happening at the hatchery, our hours of operation are Wednesdays and Saturdays 9 am to 12 pm, Rosewall Creek on Berray Road. The sea, yes, the mountains, certainly, and, of course, the trees - stately cedars, towering firs, majestic maples, rusty hued arbutus, even the alders deserve admiration. The trees on Vancouver Island are quintessential to the natural beauty that draws us here, to visit or to live. Providing a lush green backdrop to the magnificent scenery that surrounds us, trees support countless species of wildlife, they shade, they nurture, they protect, and they sing to our souls, and have for hundreds of years. Likewise, trees are what makes the Ships Point area of Fanny Bay such a marvelous place to live. Imagine, after a hot summer day in town, finding no shady relief such as greets one now when turning onto Ships Point Road from the highway. Imagine the trails through the woods and alongside the wetlands without the cedars, firs, and alders. Fortunately those lands are protected, and one need not worry about the demise of the forest that borders much of Ships Point Road before it winds up the hill, and the trees that line the wonderful walking paths in the area. Trees on private land, however, are another matter. There has been an epidemic of tree felling in and around Ships Point over the last few years. Several small parcels of land have been clear-cut, or close to it, and for what reason? To grow a lawn? Because trees drop needles, twigs, and leaves, and create a “mess?” Because they might fall on a building? For landscaping purposes? To accommodate a house? A half-acre lot on Ships Point was recently cleared for a house that was being moved onto the site from another. At first glance, one might suppose that a wide path was needed to get the house in. The odd thing is that the width of the path used to move the house out of its former location was less than half the width of the area cleared to get it onto its new lot. Another lot in the area, two acres in size, with house and outbuildings already in place, has just been cleared of its lovely mature trees, reason unknown, and the burning of the debris has left the neighbourhood in a smoky haze for days. The two acre lot next door to ours was cleared a few years ago. As a result of losing the shelter of a thick stand of firs and maples, our yard is now exposed to the relentless summer sun and receives more frost than expected during the shoulder seasons. We are, in fact, planting many young trees in our own yard in an attempt to recapture some of the protection that went down with the felled trees next door. As well, we have spent many hours cutting down thistles on the neighbour’s vacant and barren land, in order to keep them out of our gardens. Yes, one does have to fell some trees when developing a lot, but certainly not all of them. A tour of the neighborhood will reveal that many, if not most, landowners took care to nestle their houses in amongst the cedars and firs, making a lovely setting for their homes and gardens. The cleared lots stand out like sore thumbs, detracting from the intrinsic value of the neighbourhood’s natural beauty. Treeless lots change the micro-climates of adjoining yards. Wildlife suffers as more and more of the habitat they share with man is destroyed. Selectively clearing the lot, leaving clumps and borders of native trees and shrubs, will do much to enhance the appearance and value of a property as well as keep the birds singing and the neighbours happy. Mother Nature is the best gardener of all. Having years of experience, she knows what to plant and where. She looks after all the aspects and inhabitants of her landscape, and she does it well. Instead of destroying decades, or indeed hundreds of years, of her work, why not work alongside her, and in harmony with the natural beauty of the area? The majestic trees of the Ships Point area have stood for many years and will stand for many more, if we let them. Give me a land of boughs in leaf, A land of trees that stand; Where trees are fallen there is grief; I love no leafless land. - A.E. Housman (English poet) Page 8 FANNY BAY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION Fannybaycommunity.com May 2015 Who’s New In Our Community High energy would only just begin to describe the couple who have recently purchased a small home beside Wilfred (Coal) Creek. Both Robin Ratcliffe and Pierre Laforest are thrilled to have found this property, and have been working non-stop to create the home they plan to live in “forever”, while continuing to renovate homes for others in the area. Pierre was the senior fabricator in special effects (which means he could blow things up), and create car crashes among many other talents) for numerous films, and rubbed elbows with actors like John Travolta and Angelina Jolie. Robin, who is very engaging, has designed restaurants and homes in West Vancouver. She was also the marketing director for Clinique and Estee Lauder, and has always loved creating. They met 12 years ago in Montreal, (Robin was visiting her daughter, and Pierre was working on a film there) and fell in love. Pierre proposed to her under the Eiffel Tower, how romantic is that! While visiting friends in the Comox Valley, they were absolutely enchanted by the beauty here. They purchased, and renovated, a house in Union Bay, and while doing that, purchased a waterfront property in Union Bay and created a vacation rental, Bayside Beach House, which they still own. The Union Bay home was sold when they found the house that is now their passion. They are recyclers, and in all their projects have used materials from places like Demex and Habitat for Humanity. They are delighted to have discovered an overgrown garden on their property, and are looking forward to restoring much that was grown there, including apple trees and a huge raspberry patch. Creating is what inspires them both, and they have found their dream project right here in Fanny Bay. Suzanne Murray WATER CONCERNS from the SPID AGM This year the snowpack that provides recharge water is 15% of normal-DOWN 85%, and the near term weather forecast is for higher than normal temperatures. Respect the resource of potable water by hand watering your garden and watering during the early morning or even at night. Don't use the drinking water for power washing the driveway. Be practical and use our water wisely. http://www.comoxvalleyrd.ca/EN/main/departments/water-services/water-conservation.html Page 9 FANNY BAY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION Fannybaycommunity.com May 2015 Page 10 FANNY BAY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION Fannybaycommunity.com Community Contacts Aerobics (FB Hall) Suzanne Murray .....................................335-2533 Baynes Sound Lions Club.
