Come Listen, Come Dance
Do you love the 'Oldies' - the music of Gershwin, Rogers and Hart, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington? Then
you'll want to be at the Fanny Bay Hall on Saturday October 18th for a performance of these and many other great composers and musicians from the 30's, 40's and 50's, by Jacki Z and the Swing Street Trio.
This event is planned as a fund-raiser for the installation of a heat pump in the hall. Tickets are only $15
and we'll be serving pizza and pop-corn to keep your energy up while you listen and dance( if you want) to
the music of this great group, and there'll also be beer and service.
Drummer Bill Street is the co-founder of the Georgia Strait Jazz Society and has played all over the world
during his many years as a professional musician, including with his own trio in Bucerias, Mexico each
winter for the last six years. He also presents a jazz show for the BBC.
Jacki Zburin, noted big band singer and resident of Comox, will be featured in many of the special melodies
from the great American Songbook. Pianist Michael Eddy, is well known for his fabulous technique and his
ability to swing. James Lithgow on real bass has played in dozens of bands and now calls Black Creek
home.
Please join us for a great evening to remember of swinging music, and help put a new heat pump into the
hall.
Doors open at 6:30pm,
with music from 7pm

Linda Lorraine Nichol
Our Fanny Bay Community is saddened at the sudden loss of long
time Ship’s Point resident Linda Lorraine Nichol. Linda left us far
too soon, Sept. 9th 2014, at only 61 years old. She is survived by
her mother, two brothers, her stepmother, 3 sisters in-law. She was
especially close to the large and loving family of Fred’s children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Linda was well known in our community; she and husband Fred lived on Vivien Way for
28 years, after moving here in 1986. She enjoyed the FBH & OAP’s many activities, had a
great sense of fun, and was often to be seen helping with OAP Potluck Dinners, Pancake
Breakfasts, Picnics, or handling ticket sales for coming events.
She moved to Courtenay just 3 months ago; at the end of May. She loved her new small
home and was happily and busily redecorating it and planning her little garden when she
suddenly passed away.
Her generous heart and ready smile earned her friends, but often hid her troubled spirit
and the rocky path she followed all her life. She was a good friend to many, and had
many good friends. She will be missed.
In Linda’s Will she requested no service, and that in lieu of flowers, donations to the
Parkinson’s Foundation would be appreciated. However, due to many requests, there will
be a Gathering of her friends, Sunday Oct. 19th at 2 pm; at the OAP Hall, to simply remember Linda and say goodbye to her. Please call if you’d like to help in any way.

COALWATCH UPDATE ON THE RAVEN COAL MINE PROJECT
As this summer begins to wind down, the environmental assessment review of Compliance Energy’s Raven Coal Mine Project continues to be in “pause” mode. In the spring of 2013, both the Canadian
Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA) and the BC Environmental Assessment Office (BCEAO)
paused the review process on the Raven Project, requesting that Compliance provide additional
required information on their Application for Environmental Certificate (Application) and Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).
If and when Compliance provides the required information to the BCEAO and CEAA, the
environmental assessment will then move to a 180 day Application/EIS review stage which will include
two public comment periods. Compliance has indicated they intend to submit the required information
sometime in 2014.
Once the 180 day review begins, CoalWatch will provide detailed information on how the public can
participate in the review stage and public comment periods.
Regularly updated information can be found on the CoalWatch website: www.coalwatch.ca

Speeding On Tozer Road
On Sunday, Sept 14th, my calico cat Farrah was killed by a car around 2pm. broad daylight. I will never know exactly
what happened, but I can only guess that a car was going too fast to stop. Otherwise, it would have been able to see her
and stop if she was on the road. Small consolation was the kind young man down the street that collected her and
brought her home. At least I didn't have to wonder where she was. I am heartbroken ;(
Many of us have indoor/outdoor cats in the neighborhood, and we live in a rural area where there are feral cats, rabbits,
racoons, birds and some dogs straying a few feet from home.I would hate to see another animal die needlessly .Any pet
owner knows how devastating it is to lose a pet, they are our family members and loving companions. Please drive slowly
and watch for animals on the road.

Who's New In Our Community
Some years ago, Noreen Sterling wrote regular articles for the Flyer introducing people
who had recently moved to Fanny Bay. They were a pleasure to read. In the last two
years or so many new families have moved into Fanny Bay. The Editor of the FB Flyer
thought it might be interesting to revive that tradition.
Allyson and Don Roy have only lived in Fanny Bay for about two months, but they already know they have found the perfect place to begin a new adventure. After living
for some years in Vancouver, they were eager to get away from the noise and traffic of
that big city. They narrowed their choice to the area between Qualicum Bay and Courtenay. When they found 210 Baynes Drive on Ships Point, they fell in love with the
house, and the area.
They are keen gardeners, and have been enjoying getting to know what is growing in
their yard right now. Don, Allyson says, is her supporter and helper, and handy for the
heavy lifting! They are pleased they have not been troubled by deer so far, but alas
the squirrels enjoyed their grapes, and the crows ate the plums. Then there are the
rabbits! There is hope for the apples, which they say are delicious.
Allyson was the site co-ordinator for the Family Practice Residency Programme, which
is run out of UBC. She tells me it means she got to tell physicians in training what to
do and where to go! This to ensure they got the experiences they needed. What she
hopes to do is pursue more artistic endeavors. She is particularly interested in quilting,
and working with textiles.
Don worked for Syscon Justice Systems, designing Enterprise software for managing
prisons. He is taking a sabbatical from being a tech, and besides moving here, is devoting his time to playing the piano and writing fiction. They share their home with two
cats.

FANNY BAY SALMONID ENHANCEMENT SOCIETY (FBSES)
By Judy Ackinclose
As much as we love the sun we desperately need rain. The creeks are in sad shape and the few drops of moisture that is hitting our area is definitely not enough, simply said a few drops does not a river make. The salmon are out along the shores but will have to move to other areas where there are watered creeks. This year on
the east coast of Vancouver Island it will be hit and miss. Sorry to have to say it but “let there be rain” or
enough, at least, to put some life back in the creeks.
We continue on with hatchery maintenance as we are always finding something that needs repair which is not
surprising as the hatchery was built in 1965. The volunteers have completed a new roof which will protect the
“newer” 5-foot tanks donated by Marine Harvest. This will allow us to split the tanks (dividing the large number of fish from a single tank into two) a little earlier which is better for fish health.
We have a crew of men and women going to Quinsam Hatchery for 3 days to help with the annual pink egg
take. This will allow us to supply our Wilfred Creek Hatchery with pink eggs in November for the release of
fish in the spring. Stay tuned for the, hopefully, good return of chum and coho in the fall. Volunteers are eagerly awaiting, nets are ready and even the incubation room is prepped. Think rain!
The Comox Valley Pacific Salmon Foundation fundraiser dinner is sold out again this year!
If you would like to help and see what is happening at the hatchery, our hours of operation are Wednesdays
and Saturdays 9 am to 12 pm, Rosewall Creek on Berray Road. For more information, visit our website
www.fbses.ca.
Halloween
It's getting to be that time again! We have lined up the Firefighters to again prepare the
bonfire, and set off the firework display. We have a volunteer to take on kitchen duties
(I'm sure she would welcome assistance).
We're still looking for people to arrange for candy drop-off and bagging, and someone(s) to decorate the
hall in Halloween finery (we have plenty of suitable decorations) and to arrange a few games. If you'd
be interested and willing to take on some part of this, please drop me an email.

Ships Point Improvement District
In the month of August the SPID water system pumped and treated 19,230 cubic meters which is
equivalent to 4,230,000 imperial gallons for 287 properties.
Although we have an adequate supply of water, all residents are encouraged to use water responsibly as there is a cost associated with chlorination and pumping. Potable water is a finite precious
resource. Be sure to keep an adequate supply of drinking water on hand in preparation for water
service emergencies.
More Fire hydrant flushing and maintenance will be done during the month of October. As a result
of the hydrant flushing, there may be some turbidity in our water system. Should this occur, run your
cold water tap for a few minutes until the water clears. The chlorination system will remain in operation as per VIHA regulations. We thank all residents for their patience with the water system
maintenance and repairs.
Call 250 335- 0354 or 250 702-5724 or 250 335- 2775 for water emergencies.
If you suspect a leak in the system, please call.
We will continue to keep you informed of our Capital Works construction activities through our
monthly report in the Flyer, and the mailbox bulletin boards.
SPID office hours are Tuesday and Thursday 2pm to 4:30pm, pending business needs. Office appointments can be arranged by calling the office at (250) 335-0551. Messages are checked
throughout the week.
The next Board meeting is Weds October 8th at 7pm.at the SPID office at 7729 Vivian Way. All residents are welcome, indeed encouraged, to attend. Delegates should provide their presentation material to the Administrator at least a week in advance of the meeting.
Watch the entrance sign for current fire information.
Please keep our community safe.
When the fire siren at the SPID hall sounds continuously we require all residents reduce their water
consumption as much as possible. This requirement will only happen when there is a fire on the
Point. This action by residents will provide more water to fight fire. Water consumption by residents
on Ships Point in the summer can be 50% of the capacity of the system. The pump on the truck is
capable of using up to 100% of the system capacity so it is important that all other demands for water be reduced to a minimum.
