DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
St. Patrick’s will celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday on
April 12 beginning with the 12:30 p.m. Mass and
continuing until 3:30 p.m. with recitation of the Divine
Mercy Chaplet and Eucharistic Adoration. Divine
Mercy Sunday is a feast established on the First
Sunday after Easter under St. John Paul II in
response to the revelations Jesus gave to St. Maria
Faustina Kowalska on the occasion of her
canonization on April 23, 2000.

Dear Friends and Visitors,
May the joy of the Risen Lord dwell in your hearts!
I find it fascinating that on Easter, the most important Christian
feast, the gospel is always the story of confusion, fear, and an empty
tomb. Sometime in the early 1990’s I was exploring an abandoned
railroad track near where I was then living. After a while, I came to a
long tunnel. The entrance had the date of its construction etched into
an arch – 1910. As I peered inside, I could see light in the distance
and heard the dripping of water. I hesitated, but decided to take a
chance. As I walked quickly, I began to feel greater confidence, until I
came to the middle of the tunnel. There in a little niche on the side
was a lighted vigil candle. I then ran as fast as I could out of the
tunnel and up a steep embankment to a busy road. I knew that there
was a presence in that tunnel – of what, or whom I did not know. The
bewildered women and the apostles knew that they were in the
presence of an extraordinary mystery that was beyond their
comprehension!
Perhaps some key details in the gospel accounts will help shed light
on this mystery through the eyes of the early Christian community.
Both Mark and John mention a stone that had to be rolled back from
the entrance to the tomb. The women in Mark’s account wondered
who would roll back the stone for them. Consider this stone as a
barrier to Easter joy. Might it be sin, fear, resentment, grief? What
about the young man in white? Do you recall the man who was
present at Jesus’ arrest dressed only in a white linen sheet? In the
confusion and fear of the moment, he ran away naked. Shame
characterizes the naked one. The newly-baptized, the forgiven, are
dressed in the purity of white. In every account of the empty tomb,
those who discover it leave quickly to proclaim the good news or
gospel!! Easter faith requires a new vision, a stripping away of
preconceived notions and destructive lifestyles, and a renewed sense
of trust. This is accomplished by allowing someone to wash us and
lead us where we might otherwise not have gone. We ponder this
awesome mystery and our encounter with it in the sacraments
intensely for fifty days and, for the rest of our lives proclaim Christ is
risen, alleluia!

POOR BOX:
Our Poor Box donations next week will benefit Montgomery County
Coalition for the Homeless (MCCH). MCCH is a non-profit organization
that provides shelter, supportive services, and advocacy for the homeless in
our community. Through Safe Havens in Laytonsville, Rockville, Silver
Spring and Takoma Park, MCCH provides shelter and rehabilitative
programs year-round for 40 homeless, mentally ill adults. MCCH also
operates the Men’s Emergency Shelter, which offers overnight refuge to
men who are homeless.
LEGION OF MARY
will meet on Monday, April 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the
Parish Center. Please come if you feel the call of Our Lady to serve her in
this special apostolic work. The Legion of Mary also brings the Pilgrim

St. Patrick’s has Eucharistic Adoration every Tuesday at
9:45 a.m. until Benediction at 7:45 p.m. Please come and
experience the great spiritual renewal which Eucharistic
Adoration brings. As we know the Eucharist contains the Body
and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ. Just as the
Apostles worshipped Him after His resurrection, so we too can
worship and adore Him hidden in the Holy Eucharist as it is exposed to us
in the special container called a “Monstrance.” Millions of Catholics have
come to know the depth of peace and beauty that prayer before Christ in
the Eucharist can bring to our lives. Don’t miss out on this hidden treasure.
YOUNG ADULTS
at St. Patrick’s are invited to join Father Paris every
month at 270Catholic’s monthly Holy Hour. This is a time of prayer, music
and reflection during Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. It runs from 7:30
to 8:30 p.m. on the last Tuesday of each month. This month it will be on
Tuesday, April 28 at St. Mary’s old chapel, 520 Veirs Mill Rd. Following the
Holy Hour we will gather for little refreshment and socializing.

PREPARE YOURSELF FOR DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY: The Divine Mercy message is
that God is Merciful: “On that day, the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour
out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My Mercy”
(Diary, 965). The preparation for the Feast is to make a novena consisting of the
recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet for 9 days, beginning on Good Friday. Jesus said,
“By this novena, I will grant every possible grace to souls.” (Diary, 796) One must be in
the state of grace by going to Confession, receive Communion on the Feast Day, place
complete trust in God, and carry out acts of mercy. Please pick up a copy of the Divine
Mercy Novena Pamphlet and Divine Mercy ABCs/Reconciliation: The Tribunal of Mercy
handout available at the exits to the Church.

THE KNIGHTS CORNER
The Knights of Columbus Council 6793, as part of our Catholics Come Home Program and the
effort to stimulate new Evangelization, is supporting a speaking engagement led by Matthew Kelly at

PHYSICIAN-ASSISTED SUICIDE BILL:
A physician-assisted suicide bill is currently before the Maryland General Assembly. This bill would
allow physicians to prescribe a lethal dose of medication to terminally ill patients who are given a
diagnosis of six months or less to live. Now is the time to tell your state legislators that you oppose

THE FAMILY OF ST. PATRICK’S PARISH –
Remondini’s
I believe the Remondini family and friend have cornered the market on ushering at the 11:00 Mass
on Sunday. There is Earnestine and David Remondini, son Tom and son-in-law Al Wickman, available
subs Theresa Wickman (daughter) and family friend (Anne Marie Pierce).
Both Dave and Earnie are westerners. Dave was born in Demings, NM. Earnestine, aka Earnie, in
Long Beach, CA. As an only child in a naval military family, she attended 14 different schools before
graduating from Riverside High school. After graduation, she enrolled in Riverside Community College
majoring in theater and dance. While at school, she met Dave. He played the trombone in the
orchestra. Things became serious after graduation. Earnie converted to Catholicism and they married.
As an aside, California law required written permission if the male was under 21 or females under 18.
Dave got a note from his mother.
The next ten years brought big changes in their lives. Earnie continued to work at the Hall of
Records while Dave pursued his degree. Working outside their home became sporadic after having 6
children in 10 years. She continued to teach her love of dance plus doing some office work.
Moving appeared on the horizon.
Dave’s parents met while working on adjacent ranches. His grandparents homesteaded the family
ranch in the high desert. As a young child Dave stayed with his grandparents when his father was
drafted in WWII. About the age of six, he learned to ride a donkey progressing on to a pony.
Transportation to school was interesting. Dave rode his pony to a neighbor, who drove the children to
the bus stop. At school some of the teachers had taught his parents. After finishing elementary
school, his parents moved to Riverside, CA where he attended Riverside High School. Next stop was
Riverside Community College where he played trombone in the orchestra. Getting an AA, he enrolled
in The University of California at Santa Barbara. While there he joined the Army Reserves later
switching to the Coast Guard Reserves.
Moving his family to Utah he attended school to receive an MA and PhD degree focusing on
genetics. There were three more moves in the family’s future. The first was to Spokane, WA to teach
at the University. The second was to teach at Houghton, MI. The third was to Washington, DC to
work as a grants administrator at NIH.
He retired two years ago from NIH. Getting the hang of retirement, Dave retired as Commander of
the Washington area Coast Guard Reserves after 38 years of service.

Dear Parish Family,
Thank you for your participation in the Parish Advisory Council’s recent survey
regarding Mass times. Your input has been instrumental in helping discern the course
of action that will help strengthen and build our faith community.
Your opinions and comments have been reviewed. The survey results confirm that St.
Patrick’s is a vibrant parish, and gives active witness to the Gospel. Some of the
results:
• 96% that our lectors are well-trained and effective.
• 94% feel welcomed and a part of each Eucharistic celebration.
• 93% say that homilies are directly related to scripture and touch on the real-life
experiences of people.
• 91% feel that Sunday Eucharist is celebrated with the full and active participation
by parishioners.
• 88% find that the quality of our music programs supports the Eucharistic
celebration.
While these percentages reflect well on our faith community, there was also
constructive criticism that we take very seriously. We are reviewing those comments,
and are working to address the issues brought to our attention, and about which you
feel strongly.
In regard to changes to Mass times, there were several clear patterns: The positive
feedback on offering a Sunday evening Mass, the need for a contemplative, quiet
Mass, and the suggestion for a greater growth in fellowship that utilizes our new parish
center. The Parish Advisory Council recognizes that any change in Mass schedule will
impact our parishioners’ Sunday routine and familiar patterns. Our challenge is to
minimize the effect of this change. With sensitivity to this concern, the council has
discussed the results of the survey, and has advised that the current Sunday Mass
schedule be revised as follows:
5:30 p.m. Saturday
6:30 a.m. Sunday (reflective, no music)
8:00 a.m. Sunday
9:30 a.m. Sunday
11:30 a.m. Sunday
7:00 p.m. Sunday
Our primary purpose for selecting these time changes is to choose a schedule that
best suits our parish’s needs while preserving all of what we value in our St. Patrick’s
community. There should be sufficient time between Masses to allow for the proper

celebration of the Eucharist. Due to time constraints our priests frequently have to rush
through the celebration, or truncate sections of the Mass to accommodate the next
Mass. We feel the new schedule allows for the proper celebration of our Sunday liturgy.
Adding more time between Sunday morning Masses forced us to eliminate the 12:30
p.m. Mass. We know that this will come as a disappointment to those who regularly
attend St. Patrick’s at this time. However, the strong opinion and support for a Sunday
evening Mass helped move us to instituting a new 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening Mass.
Comparison with surrounding parishes that offer Mass on Sunday evening found the
later time complements the number of available Sunday evening Masses in our area.
Thank you for your understanding as we transition to this new time.
The new schedule will not be effective until the first weekend in July. In the coming
weeks you will hear and read more about the new schedule. I ask that we all work
together to make this change in the Mass schedule as seamless as possible, and allow
it to be an opportunity to strengthen our communal prayer life around the celebration of
the Eucharist.
While change often makes us uncomfortable, it is also an opportunity for growth. We
look forward to hearing from you about how these changes will affect your Sunday, and
more importantly, how we can help you in your relationship with Jesus, and your
journey to Him through the celebration of the Liturgy.
