Fifth Sunday of Easter
Saint Paul says we should “put on” virtue; we should
wear compassion, kindness, patience, gentleness—
colorful and obvious as our outfits. Paul wants us to
wear our allegiance to Christ—“on our sleeves” if you
will—not as a boast like a Gucci or Prada logo, but
as a simple, humble sign that this woman, this man,
this youngster belongs to Christ, and you’ll know it
because you can see that she or he is dressed in
love.

Dear Parish Family,
Lest what we do here on a weekly basis becomes routine, it is good to ponder
our actions and the mystery as it unfolds. The first movement in this symphony is
the coming together of individuals with our own many agendas and scattered
minds. Perhaps we have just had an argument with our spouse, parents, or
children. Maybe deep-seated resentments have begun to emerge, even in prayer.
Before we “collect” ourselves and attend to the Sacred Scriptures, we must beg
“Lord, have mercy!” As the Scriptures are proclaimed, we experience God’s
presence. Ancient stories of struggle and faith merge with our own experience. The
preacher helps to make this “common heritage” our own. We give our assent to the
truth of these mysteries in our praying of the creed – a formula of faith that has
been worked out over centuries and pondered by the Church for even longer. We
pause amid the “liturgies” of Word and Eucharist to offer our gifts for the support of
the local Church. The monetary offering ought to represent our willingness to give
of our all for the greater glory of God. As the priest prays the Eucharistic prayer,
listen for the words “we offer.” He speaks for us all! Ponder the awesome reality: we
offer to the Father in the power of the Spirit the victim, the Son, who, in turn
becomes our “host” at the banquet which is a “taste” of heaven! When we say
“Amen” to the words “Body of Christ,” we become what we receive. That is why we
do not approach if we are conscious of living in contradiction to that body. It is “the”
sacrament of “unity” with the living and the dead. It is “the” last “rite” of the Church;
as such, we call it “viaticum,” food for the journey home! The “gift” of Eucharist is
not simply between me and Jesus. I have become more cemented to his body, the
Church, and am prepared to share his love with a broken world. Therefore, I am not
to leave before being dismissed. It is not simply a matter of being polite. I must be
“sent on mission” – the root meaning of the words “Ite missa est!”
When we were conducting a survey on the Mass recently, we coined a term for
the Mass without music that is probably not correct. We spoke of a “quiet,
contemplative” Mass. Contemplation ought to lead us to the Eucharist, but the
Mass is not, as such, a private experience of communion with God. It is the coming
together of the people of God to support one another on our journey to God. The
custom of a Sunday Mass without music in this country has its roots in the penal
laws of England. When we were a colony, it was illegal for Catholics to celebrate
the faith openly. The same was true in Ireland. Priests had to “say” or “read” Mass
quickly and quietly so as not to be detected. Listen to the following words from the
General Instruction on the Roman Missal as to the purpose of music in the liturgy:
“Great importance should therefore be attached
to the use of singing in the celebration of the
Mass, with due consideration for the culture
of the people and abilities of each liturgical
assembly:care should be taken that singing
by the ministers and the people is not absent
in celebrations that occur on Sundays and holy days of obligation.”
(#40)
We are so blessed at St. Patrick’s to have excellent choirs and a congregation
that sings willingly at most celebrations of the Eucharist!
Yours in the Risen Lord,
Rev. Bill Foley

POOR BOX:
Our Poor Box donations next week will benefit Life Connection Mission.
St. Patrick’s has a long-standing association with Life Connection Mission in
Haiti which we support through our annual fall yard sale and child
sponsorship program. Life Connection Mission is committed to bringing our
Haitian neighbors to a connection with Jesus Christ by providing children
with a quality education, fostering responsible and productive graduates,
and ministering to the general needs of the community in the village of
Montrouis, Haiti. Our Principal, Christie Anne Short, spearheads our
parish’s involvement and leads our annual trip to Haiti. Your donation will
support any one of a number of essential services, including a medical
clinic, school lunches, building projects and ministry and training for pastors.
LEGION OF MARY will meet on Monday, May 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the

this special apostolic work. The Legion of Mary also brings the Pilgrim
Virgin statue to homes. For more information on the Legion of Mary or to

St. Patrick’s has Eucharistic Adoration every Tuesday at
9:45 a.m. until Benediction at 7:45 p.m. Please come and
experience the great spiritual renewal which Eucharistic
Adoration brings. As we know the Eucharist contains the Body
and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ. Just as the
Apostles worshipped Him after His resurrection, so we too can
worship and adore Him hidden in the Holy Eucharist as it is exposed to us
in the special container called a “Monstrance.” Millions of Catholics have
come to know the depth of peace and beauty that prayer before Christ in
the Eucharist can bring to our lives. Don’t miss out on this hidden treasure.
YOUNG ADULTS at St. Patrick’s are invited to join Father Paris every
month at 270Catholic’s monthly Holy Hour. This is a time of prayer, music
and reflection during Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. It runs from 7:30
to 8:30 p.m. on the last Tuesday of each month. This month it will be on
Tuesday, May 26 at St. Mary’s old chapel, 520 Veirs Mill Rd. Following the
Holy Hour we will gather for little refreshment and socializing.
