SCHOOL NEWS 410-342-2681 www.stcasimirschool.us SAINT JOHN PAUL11 LEGACY ART CONTEST Recently we received an invitation for our school, a teacher, and the 7th, & 8th grade students to participate in a contest sponsored by the Friends of John Paul II Foundation, Washington, DC Chapter, to promote the Legacy of Saint John Paul II by encouraging research, imagination, and creativity. Mrs. Pat Stelmaszczyk researched some basic information and designed a lesson plan for her 7th & 8th grade Religion classes. The students began to research the life of John Paul II through the Internet, library books, and pictures of his pilgrimages. The students also viewed a movie on his life, took a tour of the Baltimore JPII Prayer Garden, and even viewed the personal tape of Mrs. Pat when she attended the Mass at Camden Yards when Pope JPII visited Baltimore. After all the research and note taking was completed, the students were ready to begin sketching out their interpretation of Saint John Paul II - The People’s Pope. Judging criteria included: clear depiction of the theme in the sketch, creativity, originality, and artistic quality, Artist’s Statement, and that the rules were followed exactly. Besides the students, Mrs. Pat and Mrs. Heffner, also had the opportunity to enter by composing a statement as to how this contest was promoted by the teacher and school. On April 27th, the Friends of John Paul II Foundation, Washington, DC Chapter, listed the winners and we are pleased to announce that for the Archdiocese of Baltimore, St. Casimir Catholic School received the School Award of $1,500; Mrs. Patricia Stelmaszczyk received the Teacher Award of $200; Camille Carlino, 7th grade, received the Student First Place Award of $200 (poster shown); Gabriella Ewachiw, 8th grade, and Mickella Harris, 7th grade, each received the Student Honorable Mention Award of $50.
