For commercial products, the regulations require that active ingredients be listed first on these products, followed by the list of non-active cosmetic ingredients in order of decreasing predominance. Examples of products that contain active ingredients (and are thus considered both cosmetics and drugs by the FDA) are dandruff shampoos, fluoride toothpastes that fight tooth decay, antiperspirants/deodorants, and sun blocking / tanning preparations, including foundations that contain sunscreens. In the cosmetic industry there is also a category of products that are called cosmeceuticals. The word is a portmanteau of the words "cosmetic" and "pharmaceutical". Cosmeceuticals are cosmetic products that are claimed to have drug-like benefits (but are not considered drugs by the FDA). If, for example, vitamin C and vitamin E are combined the resulting anti-oxidant effect will be increased significantly. Oils can be categorized into three major groups including oils (incl. fats/butters), esters and waxes. All of them are emollients, but based on their chemical structure they have different properties. Natural Emollients Oils and fats differ in that the latter are generally solid at room temperature. Chemically, both fats and oils are composed of glycerol and fatty acids and are called triglycerides. Fatty acids can be saturated (no double bonds between the carbon atoms) or unsaturated (one or more double bonds). The degree of saturation largely determines the stability and property of the oil. Oils with a high degree of saturated fatty acids (lauric, myristic, palmitic and stearic acids) include coconut oil, cottonseed oil, and palm oil. Oils with a high degree of unsaturated fatty acids (oleic, arachidonic, linoleic acid) are canola oil, olive oil, corn oil, almond oil, safflower oil, castor oil and avocado oil. Saturated oils are more stable and do not become rancid as quickly as unsaturated oils. However, unsaturated oils are smoother, more precious, less greasy, and better absorbed by the skin. As compared to synthetic oils, natural oils have the disadvantage to be more greasy, comedogenic, and to spread only little on the skin. They are also more difficult to build into emulsions, are insoluble in alcohol (except castor oil) and require antioxidants (e.g. vitamin E or C) to prevent rancidity. Their cleansing effect is based on the ability to remove fatty particles from the skin in a watery environment. Based on the cleansing and foaming property surfactants are divided into primary and secondary surfactants (secondary surfactants are also called co-surfactants). The primary surfactants are the key components in shampoos & shower gels responsible for foam and cleansing. The low-foaming cosurfactants like coco betaine or sulfosuccinate are used to reduce the irritant (eye burning) and drying effect of the primary surfactants. In addition, some co-surfactants have also conditioning effects like the betaines. Thus, a blend of a primary and secondary surfactant and water is the backbone of every shampoo and body wash / shower gel. Besides the cleansing properties, surfactants can also have wetting, conditioning, defatting, emulsifying, & thickening effects. Surfactants are also very useful for homemade soaps (particularly liquid soaps) to improve lathering and decrease harshness. When added to the oil-lye mixture during the boiling procedure, surfactants are able to accelerate and improve the soapmaking process. Based on the charge of the hydrophobic (water-repellent) part of the molecule, surfactants are also categorized into anionic, amphoteric, nonionic, and quaternary compounds. Anionic surfactants are water soluble and have a negative charge in aqueous solution. They are very effective cleansers and often used as primary surfactant. Solutions with anionic surfactants can be made thicker by adding some salt (sodium chloride). This effect is often used to make shampoos and shower gels thicker and more viscous. Amphoteric surfactants develop a negative or positive charge depending on whether the solution is alkaline or acidic. Non-ionic surfactants are have no charge in aqueous solutions. Most amphoteric and non-ionic surfactants act as secondary surfactant and are often very mild. Cationic surfactants have a positive charge in aqueous solution and are considered to be poor cleaners. One group of cationic surfactants, the quats (see below), are excellent conditioners. Conditioners Practically all commercial shampoos contain a conditioner of some type. Consumers expect that their hair is smooth and conditioned after shampooing. The most common principle of active ingredients in hair conditioners are quaternary ammonium compounds (= quats). Quaternary means that the ammonium has 4 chemical groups attached. A quat’s ability to condition comes from the positive (cationic) charge of the quat which is attracted to the negatively (anionic) charged proteins of the hair. This electrostatic interaction inhibits rinse-off and makes the hair cuticle smooth, soft and lubricious. As a result, the hair can be combed much easier and fly-away is largely reduced due to the neutralization of the static electrical build up. Drawbacks of quats include the rather low water solubility and the poor compatibility with anionic surfactants which are commonly used as cleansing agents in shampoos. Making 2-in-1 shampoos may thus lead to stability problems. These difficulties, however, can be overcome by adding a non-ionic co-surfactant (e.g. coco betaine) or a non-ionic emulsifier (e.g. polysorbate-80 or ceteareth-20) which can assist greatly in the stability and solubility of quats. Cationic polymers are another important group of ingredients used in hair conditioners. They are similar to quats as they are also positively charged. Polymers, however, are larger consisting of either proteins, cellulose, starch, guar gum, or silicones. Once deposited to the hair, cationic polymers provide hair with slip, manageability and good combability. They also increase body and volume in damaged hair and can improve split ends. It is important to know that the efficacy of sunscreens is influenced by other ingredients in a formula and that a certain concentration of a sunscreen leads to different sun protection dependent on the type of skin, mode of application, and grade of UV exposure.
