Today’s homemade cosmetics are no longer the traditional food-based
concoctions. With the same natural and manufactured raw materials as any
commercial cosmetics company, you can create custom products with a
professional appearance and proven effectiveness. Your self-made
shampoo will wash your hair as good as or better than the retail version,
and in fact, it may even suit you better since it is a milder, more natural
formula without unnecessary chemicals added to achieve a nice color, an
intense fragrance or an extra-long shelf-life. You just add what is good for
your skin at concentrations that are effective.
Making your own cosmetics does not mean that you have to abandon
your favorite commercial products. Most people utilize their homemade
products in addition to retail products, or to create unique gifts, to

An active ingredient is a substance that makes a product effective.
For commercial products, the regulations require that active ingredients be
listed first on these products, followed by the list of non-active cosmetic
ingredients in order of decreasing predominance.
Examples of products that contain active ingredients (and are thus
considered both cosmetics and drugs by the FDA) are dandruff shampoos,
fluoride toothpastes that fight tooth decay, antiperspirants/deodorants, and
sun blocking / tanning preparations, including foundations that contain
sunscreens.
In the cosmetic industry there is also a category of products that are
called cosmeceuticals. The word is a portmanteau of the words "cosmetic"
and "pharmaceutical". Cosmeceuticals are cosmetic products that are
claimed to have drug-like benefits (but are not considered drugs by the
FDA). Cosmeceuticals contain active ingredients that have not been tested
by the same standards as drugs but may still show good clinical effective-

ness. Such ingredients typically include vitamins, phytochemicals,
enzymes, antioxidants, and essential oils.
Most active ingredients have been found to have various effects. For
example, vitamin E is known to exert several effects at the time including
anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, moisturizing, regenerating, and antimicrobial properties. This has the advantage that many active ingredients can be
used for different indications. If you incorporate hyaluronic acid into a face
cream to make an effectively moisturizing product, such a cream will
automatically also have great anti-wrinkle properties.
In addition, many active ingredients can be combined with each other
to enhance the activity of a specific property. If, for example, vitamin C
and vitamin E are combined the resulting anti-oxidant effect will be
increased significantly.

In many cosmetic products oil components form an important part of
the formulation. Oils can be categorized into three major groups including
oils (incl. fats/butters), esters and waxes. All of them are emollients, but
based on their chemical structure they have different properties.
Natural Emollients
Oils and fats differ in that the latter are generally solid at room
temperature. Chemically, both fats and oils are composed of glycerol and
fatty acids and are called triglycerides.
Fatty acids can be saturated (no double bonds between the carbon
atoms) or unsaturated (one or more double bonds). The degree of saturation
largely determines the stability and property of the oil. Oils with a high
degree of saturated fatty acids (lauric, myristic, palmitic and stearic acids)
include coconut oil, cottonseed oil, and palm oil. Oils with a high degree of
unsaturated fatty acids (oleic, arachidonic, linoleic acid) are canola oil,
olive oil, corn oil, almond oil, safflower oil, castor oil and avocado oil.
Saturated oils are more stable and do not become rancid as quickly as
unsaturated oils. However, unsaturated oils are smoother, more precious,
less greasy, and better absorbed by the skin.
As compared to synthetic oils, natural oils have the disadvantage to be
more greasy, comedogenic, and to spread only little on the skin. They are
also more difficult to build into emulsions, are insoluble in alcohol (except
castor oil) and require antioxidants (e.g. vitamin E or C) to prevent
rancidity. Natural butters like shea butter, avocado butter or cocoa butter
are not true butters but natural fats. They are excellent emollients and
thickeners and may have various effects (e.g. shea butter and avocado
butter have good antioxidant & and soothing properties due to their
content of phenolic compounds).
Synthetic Emollients
Synthetic oils are esters, usually obtained by direct reaction of fatty acids
with alcohols. As compared to the natural oils which have 3 chains of fatty
acids (trigycerides), synthetic oils usually have only one fatty acid chain.
Based on the variety of fatty acids and alcohols (e.g. butyl, isopropyl,
ethylhexyl, myristyl, oleyl alcohol), a wide range of synthetic oils with
very different properties is available. A few examples of widely used
synthetic oils:
• Hydrocarbons: mineral oil, petrolatum, polyisobutene, isododecane,
isoeicosane
• Isopropyl Esters: isopropyl myristate, isopropyl palmitate
• Caprilic/Capric Esters: triglyceride, propylene glycol diester
• Oleic Acid Esters: decyl oleate, decyl cocoate, oleyl oleate
• Silicone Oils: stearoxy dimethicone, cetyl dimethicone, cyclomethicone

The best known cosmetic products based on emulsions are creams and
lotions. There are large variety of techniques and methods to create
different types of cosmetic emulsions.
If two liquids such as water and alcohol are mixed together, a solution
is formed. The droplets of both liquids mix and mingle with each other so
that there is no boundary between one liquid and the other one. The two
liquids are miscible. However, oil and water do not mix. They stay as two
separate layers with a clear boundary between them, because the attraction
forces between the droplets are different.
In an emulsion, however, oil and water can be forced to mix. Instead
of forming two separate layers with a boundary between them, small
droplets of one liquid (dispersed phase) are spread throughout the other
liquid (continuous phase). An emulsion can be defined as a mixture of an
immiscible liquid dispersed in another liquid in the form of tiny droplets.
What Emulsifiers Do
Emulsifiers are compounds able to stabilize the dispersed droplets in
the continuous phase. Emulsifiers are molecules consisting of a waterloving (hydrophilic) part and oil-loving (lipophilic) part. With their
lipophilic part emulsifiers wrap around and incorporate oil drops thereby
preventing them from reunite again to form a separate oily phase.
The usual method for choosing an emulsifier is known as the Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Balance (HLB) system which uses a scale of 0 to 20 based
on their affinity for oil and water. Emulsifiers with low HLB-values are
more lipophilic, while higher HLB compounds are hydrophilic. In general,
emulsifiers with HLB-values of 3–8 give w/o-emulsions, whereas those with
values of above 9 are more water-soluble and result in o/w-emulsions.
Sometimes several emulsifiers are mixed together before using them in
formulas. Such emulsifying blends are commonly called emulsifying waxes.
Typically they contain 2-5 compounds such as polysorbate 60, cetearyl
alcohol, PEG-150 stearate, and steareth-20.

Types of Emulsions
The most typical emulsion is one in which an oil is dispersed in water.
This is called an oil-in-water (o/w) emulsion. If water droplets are dispersed
in oil the resulting emulsion is called water-in-oil (w/o) emulsion. It depends
entirely on the type of emulsifier you choose whether you create an o/w or
w/o emulsion. Typically, o/w-emulsions are chosen for products requiring a
relatively small amount of oil like moisturizing creams and lotions. On the
other hand, w/o-emulsions are preferred when a more product should have
good refatting properties. Typical products are night creams or ointments.
Besides two-phase emulsions it is possible to make also multiple emulsions
as w/o/w-emulsions (w/o-emulsion in water).

Thickeners are used very often in various cosmetic products. They
enhance the consistency, volume and viscosity of cosmetic products,
thereby providing more stability and better performance. Some thickeners
have also emulsifying properties. Thickeners can be natural like most
waxes but also synthetic like silicone polymers. They are derived from
various sources and consist of very different molecular structures including
sugar polymers (gums), sugar alcohols, fatty acids, and waxes.
Waxes
Waxes form an important group of ingredients for the manufacture of
personal care products and decorative cosmetics. Chemically, waxes are
complex mixtures of hydrocarbons and fatty acids combined with esters.
The modern definition of a wax is that it is not a glyceride (glycerides are
fats). Waxes are harder, less greasy and more brittle than fats. They are
very resistant to moisture, oxidization and bacteria. There are 4 categories:

• Plant Waxes: Carnauba, candelilla, jojoba

The most widely used waxes for cosmetic products are beeswax,
carnauba and candelilla wax. They all have their advantages and disadvantages. Mineral waxes form also a very important part in the manufacture of
cosmetics. Mineral waxes are hydrocarbons, derived from various processes
of crude oil refining and purified extensively to allow safe use. Unfortunately, mineral waxes have been widely criticized and avoided in the last
few years, mainly because they did not fit into the new trend of natural
cosmetics. However, mineral waxes are a natural product and one of the
best characterized and clinically tested compounds.
Polymers
Polymers represent a significant share of raw materials used in
cosmetics. Both natural and synthetic polymers are used as thickening
agents, film formers, resinous powders, and humectants. Polymers are
molecules consisting of a large number of identical units. The number of
the repeat units is called the degree of polymerization. Polymers are
classified by their structure:
• Natural polymers: Proteins (e.g. keratin), sugars (e.g. gums)
• Synthetic polymers: Petroleum-based polymers (e.g. acrylic esters),
biologically-derived polymers (e.g. silicones)

Surfactants
Like emulsifiers, surfactants (abbreviation of SURFace ACTive
Agents) are compounds that consist of a hydrophobic (water-repellent) and
hydrophilic (water-attracting) part and are able to mix oils and water. Their
cleansing effect is based on the ability to remove fatty particles from the
skin in a watery environment. Based on the cleansing and foaming
property surfactants are divided into primary and secondary surfactants
(secondary surfactants are also called co-surfactants).
The primary surfactants are the key components in shampoos &
shower gels responsible for foam and cleansing. The low-foaming cosurfactants like coco betaine or sulfosuccinate are used to reduce the
irritant (eye burning) and drying effect of the primary surfactants. In
addition, some co-surfactants have also conditioning effects like the
betaines. Thus, a blend of a primary and secondary surfactant and water is
the backbone of every shampoo and body wash / shower gel.
Besides the cleansing properties, surfactants can also have wetting,
conditioning, defatting, emulsifying, & thickening effects. Surfactants are
also very useful for homemade soaps (particularly liquid soaps) to improve
lathering and decrease harshness. When added to the oil-lye mixture during
the boiling procedure, surfactants are able to accelerate and improve the
soapmaking process.
Based on the charge of the hydrophobic (water-repellent) part of the
molecule, surfactants are also categorized into anionic, amphoteric, nonionic, and quaternary compounds. Anionic surfactants are water soluble and
have a negative charge in aqueous solution. They are very effective
cleansers and often used as primary surfactant. Solutions with anionic
surfactants can be made thicker by adding some salt (sodium chloride). This
effect is often used to make shampoos and shower gels thicker and more
viscous. Amphoteric surfactants develop a negative or positive charge
depending on whether the solution is alkaline or acidic. Non-ionic
surfactants are have no charge in aqueous solutions. Most amphoteric and
non-ionic surfactants act as secondary surfactant and are often very mild.
Cationic surfactants have a positive charge in aqueous solution and are
considered to be poor cleaners. One group of cationic surfactants, the quats
(see below), are excellent conditioners.
Conditioners
Practically all commercial shampoos contain a conditioner of some
type. Consumers expect that their hair is smooth and conditioned after
shampooing. The most common principle of active ingredients in hair
conditioners are quaternary ammonium compounds (= quats). Quaternary
means that the ammonium has 4 chemical groups attached. A quat’s ability
to condition comes from the positive (cationic) charge of the quat which is
attracted to the negatively (anionic) charged proteins of the hair.
This electrostatic interaction inhibits rinse-off and makes the hair
cuticle smooth, soft and lubricious. As a result, the hair can be combed
much easier and fly-away is largely reduced due to the neutralization of the
static electrical build up.
Drawbacks of quats include the rather low water solubility and the
poor compatibility with anionic surfactants which are commonly used as
cleansing agents in shampoos. Making 2-in-1 shampoos may thus lead to
stability problems. These difficulties, however, can be overcome by adding
a non-ionic co-surfactant (e.g. coco betaine) or a non-ionic emulsifier (e.g.
polysorbate-80 or ceteareth-20) which can assist greatly in the stability
and solubility of quats.
Cationic polymers are another important group of ingredients used in
hair conditioners. They are similar to quats as they are also positively
charged. Polymers, however, are larger consisting of either proteins,
cellulose, starch, guar gum, or silicones. Once deposited to the hair,
cationic polymers provide hair with slip, manageability and good
combability. They also increase body and volume in damaged hair and can
improve split ends. One example is soy quat that consists of fragmented
(hydrolzed) proteins which attach firmly to the hair shaft, thereby forming
a protective layer on the hair cuticles, especially at damaged sites. Soy quat
is therefore often used to treat split ends.

effective conditioning
agents providing antistatic, detangling and
softening properties.

UV-radiation is known to produce erythema and pigmentation on the
skin. When directly exposed to the sun, there is 10 to 100 times more
exposure of UVA than UVB. UVB (considered the Burning Ray) has an
immediate, harmful impact on the skin within minutes. UVA (considered
the Aging Ray), which you do not feel, has been shown to damage the skin
by producing premature aging, wrinkles, and even tumors.
The SPF number defines how long you can stay in the sun before
getting burnt. If it normally takes 20 minutes in the sun before you start
turning pink, an SPF 15 product will let you stay in the sun 20 min x 15
(SPF) = 300 minutes. The SPF considers only protection from UVBradiation. The FDA has established 30 as an upper limit for SPF labeling.

Physical Sunscreens
Physical sunscreens consist of non-organic pigments like zinc oxide
or titanium dioxide, which reflect the UV-radiation. In micronized form
(size: 10-100nm) the particles absorb the UV-radiation (UVA and UVB). A
good effect can be reached with different particle sizes of either substance.
The substances even in smallest particles do not penetrate into the skin
and are chemically inert, so do not produce allergies, and work immediately
after application. The negative aspects of physical sunscreens are that they
whiten the skin (micronized sunscreens, however, much less).
Organic Sunscreens
Organic sunscreens act by absorbing UV-light. Typical organic UVBfilters are octyl triazone, urocanic acid, octyl methoxy-cinnamate, methylbenzylidene camphor, 3-benzylidene sulfonic acid, and PABA. Newer sun
protection contains also UVA-filters, such as oxybenzone, benzophenone-4
butyl methoxy-dibenzoyl-methane and terephthalylidene sulfonic acid.
Sunscreen Additives
To diminish the destructive effects of UV-induced oxygen radicals,
antioxidants are often added to sunscreens to protect the filters from
oxidation. These effects can be observed in vitro using vitamins (A, E, C),
minerals (selenium, zinc) or reduced gluthation.
How Much Sunscreen for a Certain SPF?
It is important to know that the efficacy of sunscreens is influenced
by other ingredients in a formula and that a certain concentration of a
sunscreen leads to different sun protection dependent on the type of skin,
mode of application, and grade of UV exposure. Therefore, it is not
possible to predict exactly the SPF level in a product. It will always be an
approximate calculation. The table below shows you some examples of
expected SPF values when sunscreens are added in oil-in-water emulsions.

Cosmetic products become easily contaminated by microbes as they
contain water, oils, peptides, and carbohydrates which all are a very good
medium for growth of bacteria and fungi. All these factors contribute to the
fact that cosmetic products need very good preservation to prevent
microbial growth and spoiling of the cosmetic product and also infection of
the skin. Generally, shampoos and other rinse-off products need fewer
preservatives than leave-on products as creams and decorative cosmetics.
Synthetic Preservatives
Synthetic preservatives are the most effective compounds for preserving cosmetics. They are effective against a wide range of bacteria and
molds. They all have been tested for efficacy and safety. By far the most
widely used preservatives are the parabens (in about 80%) followed by ureaderivatives like imidazolidinyl urea and diazolidinyl urea. Organic acids like
sodium benzoate and sorbic acid (often together with phenoxyethanol) are
also frequently utilized. EDTA is often used to increase the effectiveness of
other preservatives.
Natural Preservatives
As compared to synthetic preservatives, however, the activity is
generally lower and directed to a less broad spectrum of microbes. Some of
the most widely used natural preservatives are potassium sorbate and
grapefruit seed extract. The preservative effect of most natural agents is
primarily based on their antioxidant activity preventing oils and fats to
become rancid.
Appropriate Use of Preservatives
Every cosmetic formula requires a tailor-made preservative system to
meet its specific needs. Several factors influence the choice and dosage of a
preservative including working conditions, type of product, type of
formula, combinations, and length of shelf life (the longer the desired shelf
life the more preservatives are needed). Based on these factors there is no
standard preservative system that can be utilized for all kinds of cosmetic
products.
Since most preservatives are not able to prevent growth of all types
of microorganisms including molds, yeast, gram positive and gram negative
bacteria, oftentimes different kinds of perservatives are combined. For
example, parabens are typically combined with diazolidinyl urea, while
phenoxyethanol is often combined with sorbic acid. Potassium sorbate is
also often used together with EDTA.

Organic Colorants
Colorants are classified as either organic or inorganic depending on
the chemistry. Organic colors are mostly synthetic compounds and are
divided into dyes and pigments. Dyes are colors that are soluble in the
medium in which they are used, whereas pigments are insoluble. Most
organic colorants are dyes, but there are also insoluble organic colorants
which are called Lakes. Lakes consist of an organic dye with an inorganic,
usually metallic substrate (e.g. aluminum hydrate, talc, zinc oxide, titanium
dioxide). In the US most organic colorants must be approved by the FDA
(=certified colors) and receive then one of the following designations:
• FD&C: certified for use in food, drugs & cosmetics
• D&C: certified for use in drugs & cosmetics including in those in
contact with mucous membranes and those that are ingested
• External D&C: certified for use in drugs & cosmetics that do not come
in contact with mucous membranes or those that are ingested.
Inorganic Colorants
Inorganic colorants are composed of insoluble metallic compounds
which are either derived from natural sources (e.g. china clay, carbon
deposits) or are synthesized. Inorganic colors do not have the same kinds
of health risks as organic colors and, therefore do not require certification.
Unfortunately, inorganic colorants are not available in the range of shades
that the organic offers, and they are not water soluble. However, many
inorganic colorants are available in liquid form (pre-dispersed in oil).
Micas
Micas are natural shimmer pigments derived from the mineral
Muscovite Mica (potassium aluminum silicate). Since pure mica is a
translucent, colorless pigment, micas are coated with titanium dioxide, iron
oxides, or other inorganic colors to create different shades. . Micas are
classified as permitted exempt color for cosmetics which means that they
do not need to be certified by the FDA and that there are no use restrictions. Micas give deep color with shimmering & pearlizing lustre.
Selecting Colorants
Color selection depends also on the properties of a formulation. As
a rule of thumb: for liquid products (e.g. shampoo, lotion) use water-soluble
as D&C or FD&C colors. For solid products (e.g. powders) use inorganic or
insoluble organic colors (Lakes). Colorants are extremely effective. Only
minute amounts are necessary to color a cosmetic product. For example, to
color a shampoo only 0.00001% dye is necessary! - Therefore, colorants
should be used in dilute stock solutions (such as 0.1%) either dissolved in
water when water-soluble colorants are used or dispersed in oils when waterinsoluble colorants are used.

Henna is a natural dye extracted from the dried and powdered leaves,
petioles and young shoots of the mignonette tree, or henna shrub (Lawsonia inermis). The natural dye is traditionally found in India, Pakistan,
Middle East, and Northern Africa. When ground the dried leaves become a
greenish powder, but the dye is reddish to dark brown. Strong tea or coffee,
lemon juice (or another acidic liquid) and essential oils (e.g. tea tree, eucalyptus, clove and lavender) can be used to release the dye from the powder.
Description: Contains stabilizers & additional pigments for specific
shade (paraphenylediaamine, p-aminophenol, citric acid, barium peroxide,
magnesium carbonate). CAS# 83-72-7. Fine powder, faint herbal odor.
Dispersible in water & oil.
Properties: conditions the hair & adds shine (if used diluted in hair
care products), colors hair temporarily for 10-20 days (if used concentrated
in hair color pastes). Note: for hair care use only.
Use: Hair shine or conditioning: add henna to shampoos & conditioners at 5-15%. Hair coloring (1 application): make thick paste with henna
(100-300g), hot water, lemon juice & some vegetable oil (apply for 3-8h).

easily miscible in water & oils.
All blends can be tinted with titanium dioxide or other pigments to

Method
Add phase B into a disinfected, heat-resistant glass beaker.
Heat to 85oC/185oF, stir, and make sure the Skinwhite MSH
is melted. Add phase A to another glass beaker and heat to
the same temperature. Remove both beakers from the heat.
Add phase A to phase B and stir well. Add phase C when the
temperature dropped to 40oC/100oF. Stir again before filling
into jars. Add more GelMaker EMU to increase viscosity.
Properties
SkinWhite MSH is a novel skin lightener (undecylenoyl
phenylalanine) made of natural amino acids with a lipidresidue. It inhibits skin cells to produce melanin pigments
and effectively lightens age spots & dark skin areas.
Requires application of 1 to 6 weeks until skin whitens
dependent on skin pigmentation. Product has excellent
stability in cosmetics.
net weight of a product (e.g. 10oz) equals 100%. If a certain ingredient is
indicated with 5%, you will have to add 5% of 10oz which is 0.5oz. If the
product is liquid you may prefer to convert the weight percentages into
volumes.

percentages, weights and volumes. Please note that cups, tablespoons and
teaspoons are not accurate measures and give only an approximate
conversion of the weight percentages.

Method
Add phase A into a heat resistant glass beaker and sprinkle
the xanthan gum into the water while blending well to avoid
lumps. Add phase B into another glass beaker. Heat both
beakers to 70oC/158oF until the ingredients are melted. Add
phase B to phase A while stirring. Remove from the heat. Stir
and cool to 40oC/100oF. Add then phase C, stir again.
Properties
Skin lotion with nourishing oils and antioxidants (vitamin E).
Lacto-ceramide (ceramide-3 & liposomes) moisturizes the
skin and restores the natural ceramides in the skin.

Method
Add phase A into a disinfected glass beaker and stir. Add
phase B in another disinfected glass beaker. Sprinkle the
xanthan gum into the water while stirring well. Add phase A
to phase B and stir well. When uniform add phase C and
phase D and mix well after each ingredient. Fill into tubes/
tottles or bottles.
Method
Add phase A into a disinfected glass beaker and stir well to
dissolve the polyquaternium-10. Add phase B to phase A
and stir gentle. Add phase C and stir again. Fill into shampoo bottle.
Properties
Mild hair shampoo containing an effective quat compound
(polyquaternium-10) as a conditioning ingredient. It adds
shine to the hair and helps wet/dry combing.

Method
Add phase B into a mortar and blend well with the pestle
until the color is uniform. Then add phase A one by one to
the mortar and mix well after each ingredient until the color
is uniform. Adjust the color with more pigment blend if
necessary, or dilute with Mica Powder. Fill into powder
sifter jar.
Properties
Loose mineral makeup with a blend of iron oxide pigments. Adheres very well to the skin and gives a flawless
natural look and velvet skin feel due to the Mica Spheres.

Method
Add phase A into a disinfected glass beaker and stir well.
Add phase B one by one to phase A and stir well. You can
adjust the shade by adding more pearlwhite for frost
shades, or more bordeaux mica and D&C Red 7 for more
pink shades. Adding iron oxide brown gives a more cinnamon-red shade. Heat the lip glaze to 130F/55 C to make it
thinner. This helps to transferring it to a lip gloss container
using a pipette.
Properties
Jojoba Gel is a clear, viscous oil that gives good consistency and shine to the lip gloss. It is an excellent emollient
and has water-proofing properties. It lasts long on the lips
and is not tacky.
