March 5, 2014 Greetings, It is my pleasure to inform you that out of nearly three hundred nationwide nominations, the Indian Creek CUSD #425 Board of Education has been selected as one of five first place recipients of a 2014 MAGNA Award for school districts with fewer than 5000 students. An independent panel of school board members, administrators, and other educators served to select the award winners. The 20th annual MAGNA Awards program is sponsored by the National School Boards Association’s (NSBA) American School Board Journal (ASBJ) with the generous support of Sodexo. These awards recognize school boards across the country for outstanding programs that advance student learning and encourage community development in schools. ASBJ initiated the Magna Awards in 1995 to recognize school boards for taking bold and innovative steps to improve their educational programs. The Indian Creek Board is being honored for their service and leadership in the creation of the “DeKalb County R-E-S-P-E-C-T Initiative”. The purpose of this program is to promote healthy lifestyle choices and behaviors pertaining to respect for diversity and oneself, and bullying and suicide prevention for all K-12 students in DeKalb County, as well as educating adults. The program consists of 3 DVDs with age appropriate tracks and guides that focus on teaching: Respect for all, Esteem for self, Suicide Prevention Education, and Civility Training. All schools in DeKalb County will receive a copy of the program. When the idea was presented for the creation of this program, the Indian Creek Board immediately saw it as a natural extension of our social and emotional learning curriculum and while there was no cost to the district as it was grant funded, the Board provided support and leadership in various ways and allowed the use of district buildings and grounds for both auditions and one week of filming. Student and adult actors from all over DeKalb County participated in this project. It is through the Board’s ability to visualize and support this program with its potential to positively impact the learning, lifestyles, and choices of over 16,500 students, 1400 teachers and administrators countywide that it came to fruition. The 2014 MAGNA Award winners are highlighted in a special section in the March/April issue of ASBJ and they will be formally recognized on Saturday, April 5, at the “Best Practices for School Leaders Luncheon”, which is part of the National School Board Association’s 74th Annual Conference. In addition to a listing in the ASBJ special March/April section, the district’s winning entry will be added to the Magna Awards’ searchable best practices database. Both can be found at www.asbj.com/magna as of 1:00 p.m. on March 5, 2014. To see a preview of the “R-E-S-P-E-C-T Initiative”, go to www.indiancreekschools.org and press “play” on the YouTube video found on the front page. Sincerely, Pamela R. Rockwood Pamela R. In January’s newsletter we published notification that Waterman Elementary, working in cooperation with statewide educational agencies, had agreed to serve as a local depository for new books to assist the K-12 schoolchildren who have been homeless since the devastating tornadoes of last November. The vast majority of these children and their families are located in the central Illinois town of Washington and nearby communities in Tazewell County. Your response to our request was overwhelming. Families, faculty/staff and community members continued to bring in dozens upon dozens of beautiful new paperback and hardcover books throughout the first two weeks of January. On Monday, January 20, Mr. and Mrs. Witzig were able to personally deliver 9 boxes of nearly 300 books to the Tazewell County Regional Office of Education in Pekin, which is serving as the distribution coordinator for this project. They expressed a great amount of appreciation for our efforts. Education occurs in many ways. Thank you for helping WES to live and teach the lesson of caring for and assisting others who are in need. W.Y.S.E. Parents need to bring their incoming kindergartner with them to pick up their registration packet and listen to presentations from each building’s principal and kindergarten teacher(s). We hope to see all parents and incoming kindergartners there. Children need to be prepared to listen carefully and quietly about how to succeed in kindergarten. Girls and boys who will turn 5 prior to September 1, 2014, are eligible to attend kindergarten for the 2014-2015 school year. This is the only kindergarten registration that will occur. If you cannot attend, please contact your child’s school office prior to the night of the roundup: SES (815)824-2122 or WES (815)264-3351. S.E.S. E.P.C. SPELLING BEE NEWS: The I.C.M.S. spelling bee teams recently participated in two competitions. Our sixth, seventh, and eighth grade teams met for the ICMS Bee on February 18. Congratulations to winners Nicole Diaz and Sean Insley (co-champions), as well as Trae Mishler (3rd), Kyla Rachas (4th), and Kayla McCormick (5th). Sixth grade spellers included Tony Bruner, Catie Cassidy, Alaynna Grimm, Emily Grzeca, Matt McGue, R.J. McCoy, Kyla Rachas, Jaide Salinas, and McKai Vann, as well as seventh and eighth grade spellers Nicole Diaz, Sean Insley, Scott Jernigan, Ethan Johanningsmeier, Hannah Johnson, Kayla McCormick, Trae Mishler, James O’Neal, and Ray Ragan. We appreciate Mrs. Goodrich, Mrs. Korhnak, and Mrs. Metz serving as our caller and judges. The sixth grade team is advised by Ms. Burton and Mrs. Nicklaus and the seventh/eighth grade team is advised by Mrs. Smith and Ms. Burton. Congratulations to all of the spellers for a job well done! Based on their number of words correctly spelled at practices, Nicole Diaz and Sean Insley were selected to participate at the DeKalb County Spelling Bee held at Kishwaukee College on February 22. Because Sean had band contest the same morning, Kayla McCormick served admirably as his alternate. The Junior Ten Spelling Bee team is busy practicing for our final competition to be held at Hinckley-Big Rock Middle School on March 18 at 6:30 p.m. Our I.C.M.S. team includes Sean Insley, Ethan Johanningsmeier, Kayla McCormick, Cap. Trae Mishler, and Ray Ragan with alternate Hannah Johnson. We wish them the best of luck as they attempt to capture the Junior Ten Spelling Bee Champion traveling trophy, last seen in the ICMS lobby in March of 2012! Mrs. Carol R. Smith, Advisor SPRING BREAK: Spring break will begin with a 2 p.m. early dismissal on Friday, March 21. School will resume on Monday, March 31.
