Fenlanders Editors Preamble
Some information following the June Chapter meeting.
Firstly – Chapter vacancies.
Chapter Safety Officer:
As a part of the UK HOG Charter we have a Safety Officer. This is an important role and includes checking the ride schedule, rally site plus lots more,
primarily, to ensure we adhere to HOG UK and BMF insurance requirements. We are looking for a person who is very level headed, has a degree of patience
and understands the basics of risk. This is a committee post so attendance at the monthly meeting in Mundford is required
Road Captain – Suffolk Region:
We have a vacancy for Road Captain in the Suffolk Region, based at Newmarket. The ideal person would be based within a short ride to Newmarket as this
role also takes in the New Members Rides and therefore would entail one ride out per month, plus one new members ride every other month (during the
riding season). All RC’s attend the HOG UK Road Captains Course (this will be fully funded by the chapter) and due to the costs of the course, we would ask
that anyone wishing to apply is in a position to commit to the RC role for a minimum of two seasons (hopefully lots more!). This is a committee post so
attendance at the monthly meeting in Mundford is required
Road Marshalls – All Regions:
To support our Road Captains, we would like to have a minimum of two Road Marshals per region, these roles are/will include acting as tail end Charlie on
regional and full chapter ride-out’s, typically we have one regional and one chapter ride per month. We currently have two positions available. These are not
committee posts
Applications close on Saturday 4th July, so, if you would like to know more or apply for any of the above posts, please email our Director on
[email protected]
Secondly – your newsletter
The committee have agreed that we will try to get the monthly newsletter published by the end of the week following the Chapter meeting, i.e. by the 2nd
Sunday of each month. This will hopefully mean that information about upcoming chapter activities is more up to date. So for anyone intending to send me
contributions the deadline for any copy is now the chapter meeting date itself, for inclusion in that months newsletter.
Chapter members have been to the Benelux Rally and also the European HOG rally in Spain this month – perhaps you have been following Terry Cloke on
Facebook?
And only a month to go now until our own, so another reminder about the Brown Bear stand, where you can sell your unwanted motorcycle parts and clothing, making money for yourself and the club. Also remember to order your discounted rally T shirt and other rally merchandise
from Ali – form to print off in this newsletter or just contact her on the bulletin board.
After mixed weather until now Summer appears to have arrived. Of course - Neily B always orders it for the rally.

From the Directors chair
Hello everybody and apologies for not getting a message to you in our last newsletter but it wasn't that easy!
You see I was first mate in a crew of four picking up a brand new 36 foot 900
horsepower 70 mph custom built open boat from Miami and delivering it 1000
miles to the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean. The journey was not
however a pleasure cruise although the stopovers we had on the various
islands were brilliant. We stayed the first 3 nights in downtown Miami inside
Miami harbour while we sea trailed the boat and familiarised ourselves with the
boat and the seatronics. We also had to
buy all the safety equipment ,fishing rods
and provisions of course.
Finally setting off at 5 in the morning for a
180 miles leg to Nassau. We stayed at the
exact spot where Daniel Craig came out of
the sea in his first James Bond film. Other
places we saw included where the Pigs
swim in the sea at Fowl Cay. We saw the
Grotto from Thunderball. We swam with
Sharks and Turtles and even a Manatee. We ate wonderful meals and fresh Seafood and even
caught our own tuna which we had as Sushi within 10 and steaks that night. We drank in 7 star luxury to local bars but drink we
did !
We made our way south in a fairly
rough Atlantic having to stop over for
extra nights due to the sea state on
the windward side making a couple
of crossings too rough and
dangerous to continue. So after
perhaps fuelling the boat ( it drinks
1gallon per mile by the way) and
doing some checks etc we relaxed at
various bars and had some fabulous
laughs and met some lovely people.
From the Directors chair
The final leg was 220 miles at which stage one of our crew
abandoned ship and chartered a plane as he'd taken enough
punishment two days before. We made it after a gruelling 9
hours to my mates magnificent house where we were pampered and relaxed for four glorious days and nights. Oh yes
and drank a bit more too. It was an adventure that will stay
with me forever and despite the batterings we took I'd do it all
again tomorrow !!!
Well with a month now until the rally I'm delighted with another
record number of pre sold tickets and looking forward to a fantastic
time. I hope you are too! Summer seems to have arrived at long
last too and those tourists are around taking wrong turns all
over the place so take extra care of yourselves and each other but
enjoy yourselves and your bikes !
All the very best

News from Newmarket HD
Hi All, Sitting here in scorching hot weather, about time! It’s fantastic being able to ride to work knowing that it will be a decent
temperature at 6.30am, if only it was like this all year round!
Some great news is that Dick and I are now signatories to the bank account which means that we can now request online banking and
burst into the 21st century!. We are also looking into a portable cardnet machine which will mean that we can take credit/debit cards for
chapter merchandise at meetings etc. Apart from that, all all is well with the accounts and we continue to update weekly. We are
preparing for the rally and this year will be able to break down the outgoings and incomings more accurately.
On Saturday 27th we opened Newmarket at 6.00am to welcome the 41 riders taking part in the Dawn to Dusk Ride 2015. Richard &
Alison, Mitch, Emma and myself were here very early and pleasingly we were joined by Lindz and Chewy for the chapter. We did a
breakfast for the riders on the BBQ and raised £42.27 for the Chapter Charity Fund. It was touch and go though as we thought the
riders would arrive in dribs and drabs. Oh no! All 41 riders mostly with pillions arrived at 6.15am, so we had a tad of a rush. but I’m
pleased to say the team coped really well, see the photos here…
http://www.lindhd.co.uk/pages/newmarket/newmarket-harley-davidson-gallery.htm
Events wise at the shop we have a very busy July coming up, starting with Thetford & District Motorcycle Club on Sunday 19 th July at
Thetford Rugby Club. So if you are in the area on the day pop and see us, we’ll have a few bikes there and
maybe a three wheel one too!
The biggest by far for July will be The East of England Rally where we will have a Tech and support
vehicle plus the usual merchandise stalls at the rally site and at Sheringham. For the Friday ride to
Norwich we have bought a load of H-D flags so hopefully the ride in should get a good reception at The Forum. Sharon and the kids are
coming to the rally for the weekend and I know they are looking to catching up with some old faces
from the past. Then, we are at Essex House of Horrors Rally for the last weekend of July, so a busy
month coming up but it’s great to get out there!
Finally, Emma Harlie, my Daughter. is now working at Newmarket on Saturdays,. She has just left
school and is taking a business course at Stamford College, so please join with me in welcoming her to
the Newmarket team and say hello the next time you are in the shop.
Anyway, that’s about all for now, as always, my contact details are below….

News from Newmarket HD
Hi All,
We had an early start on Saturday 27th June for the Dawn to Dusk Ride. Lindz and Chewy joined us to help with the BBQ as
did my better half Alison, and Mitch and Emma from the shop. All went well with 41 bikes arriving, fed, watered and on
their way to Lands Ends via another three H-D Dealerships. We also raised over £40 for the chapter charity at the BBQ and
the weather was superb!
We still a few of our bargain boots (some reduced from £150 to £60) so pop in and grab a pair if you haven’t already, have
a look here….
http://www.lindhd.co.uk/shop/online-store/special-offers/Footwear.htm
I’m still getting new members join up which is really good. We are holding the new owners day on the last Saturday of the
month which is a great welcome for any potential new member and anyone can come along, so if you have a friend that
may be interested in joining up, pass them my details!
The big news of the month is that we have a super special offer on selected new bikes. You could get up to £1,000 worth of
Parts or Accessories when choosing a new bike from us, more details here….
http://www.lindhd.co.uk/pages/newmarket/news-and-events/june-offer-extended-throughout-july.htm
And finally, as always, I will always mention I am here to serve you and the chapter. I’m pretty sure we have the best
chapter in the country! Let’s have the best rally, and, along with the shop, be proud that we provide the best service, best
rally, best events and the membership experience in the UK. I will always work hard to prove that, so let’s look forward to
rest of the year and beyond.
Thank you for continued support, and if you have any ideas put them forward to me and I will see what we can do.
Thank you see you out there

THE BRITISH HAVE A WAY WITH WORDS
The train was quite crowded and a U.S. Marine walked the entire length of the train looking for a seat, but the only seat left
was taken by a well dressed, middle aged French woman's poodle.
The war-weary Marine asked, "Ma'am may I have that seat"?
The French woman just sniffed and said to no one in particular "Americans are so rude. My little Fifi is using that seat".
The Marine walked the entire train again, but the only seat left was under that dog.
Please Ma'am, may I sit down, I'm very tired?
She snorted, "Not only are you Americans rude you are also arrogant".
This time the Marine didn't say a word, he just picked up the little dog, tossed it out the train window and sat down.
The woman shrieked "Someone must defend my honour! This American should be put in his place!"
An English gentleman sitting nearby spoke up. "Sir, you Americans seem to have a penchant for doing the wrong thing.
You hold your fork in the wrong hand. You drive your cars on the wrong side of the road.
And now Sir you seem to have thrown the wrong bitch out the window".

Ladies of Harley Rides
First LOH ride out of the year
The outlook was not good to say the least, showers and colder than it had been recently. Is this really June?
Not to be one deterred by a bit of rain from a ride out I set off anyway hoping that a few would brave it and join me. I was not disappointed Mike
and Shirley were waiting for me at Beacon Hill. Sally, Vanessa and Mandy rolled in not long after and were all raring to go.
We set off across country following the scenic route A1120 and what a lovely route. Black clouds followed our route out to Southwold, however
other than a couple of little spits it stayed mainly dry and as we road into town the sky’s brighten .
We parked up and Mike flashed his pink clothing at us ( you need to ask him what that was!) and we settled down for a very pleasant lunch at the
Red Lion. Many passers by commented on our bikes especially Mike's new Softail - a beaut, one lady cyclist telling Sally and I she had been inspired by us ladies and may take up her Vespa again. As long as its on
two wheels it all counts.
The only downside to the day was we all caught the rain going home ,
but its only water and there always the bliss of a hot shower and a cup
of tea to end a good ride.
What a lovely way to spend a Sunday, and we will do it again next
month.

Route 66 Road Trip
with Mike & Shirley Gooch
Day 15
250 Miles from Las Vegas NV to Victorville CA. But the first problem was
getting out of Las Vegas. Although Bear our guide has done this trip over
100 times before he still managed to take a wrong turn. So we left our
hotel from the car park at the rear and some 10 minutes later found
ourselves passing it again at the front. Never mind – another chance to
ride ‘the strip’ before we leave.
This part of the route required some detours because of bad weather and
flooding ahead of us. Part of old Route 66 had been washed away. So we
headed through the Mojave Desert for Amboy. A time capsule of 1950s
America in the middle of the desert.
Now barely a
settlement, let alone
a destination, it
boasts the highlight of
Roys Motel and
Café and a population
of 20. An essential
stop for something to drink already and some shade from the severe heat.
But what should we find when we arrived, an English student on a bicycle
who was riding across America from east coast to west. He had stopped at
Amboy because he knew he did not have enough time to cross the desert in
front of him before nightfall. Good luck to him.
Then it was back the way we had come, on to Interstate 40, before we could
get back on 66 again.
Route 66 Road Trip
The next stop was Barstow, for Elmers bottle tree ranch.
One of the more weird and wonderful attractions along historic Route 66 . Made
from hundreds of empty bottles mounted on recycled scrap metal poles, the quirky
masterpiece was born around 2000 when artist Elmer inherited a wealth of
discarded treasures that his late father had found over the years while wandering
the desert. Unsure what to do with the hoard, Elmer decided to make the bottles
into his first bottle tree, then another and another. Before he knew it he had an
orchard and the Bottle Tree Ranch was born.
Then on another 40 miles or so for our overnight stop in Victorville.
Route 66 Road Trip
Day 16 – last day of the tour
Packing the bags and loading up with mixed feelings. Yes, we had more days to look forward to in San
Francisco after the tour ended, but this was to be it. We wanted to get to the other end of Route 66 to
say we had done it, but we wanted the tour to go on and on.
A relatively short 90 mile ride from Victorville to Los Angeles, the end of the line. No real sights to
report en route. We had been well briefed about the traffic in LA. Stay in a tight group, ride fast,
watch out for the car drivers. All good and necessary advice.
So we rode into the city in glorious weather, headed for the ocean and Santa Monica pier. We parked
in and gathered at the end of the Will Rogers Highway for
a group photo and then some individual ones.
Then we wandered on to the pier for our last lunch
together, at Bubba Gumps - yes there really is one!
After lunch we returned the bikes to Glendale Harley
Davidson, having ridden 2953.4 miles across
America.
A farewell dinner at the hotel awaited us before we
went our separate ways, but this was the emotional
bit. All those miles, making great friends on the way
[still in touch with some of them on Facebook now,
even in South Africa and Australia].
Great tour guides in Marc and Bear. A great bike to ride, so much so that it caused me to buy
my new Heritage this year. An unforgettable experience.
The only problem is 9 months on we now want to do it all over again.
Yeehaaw !!
