MEMBER OF THE MONTH - This month’s member is Ian Burr who many of you will know
from the 5 mile pub walks.
I had a professional career mainly in Warwickshire before moving to Ferndown four years or
so ago. Not knowing anyone locally it occurred to me that joining U3A might be a good way
of meeting a few people – and so it proved.
I have an interest in literature, art, and architecture, and during my three years of
membership I have consistently been able to find groups that I have enjoyed, some of them
leading me in unexpected directions.
An enthusiast for country walking (possibly because it doesn't cost anything!) I now lead the
five mile walking group and am very happy to have found a way of contributing to U3A
without having to stand up in front of an audience!
Some of our members are up for anything!!!!
My name is Pat O Riordan - When I retired I needed something useful to do and was very lucky as U3A was just being
set up in Ferndown so I joined. I lead the Keep Fit class for about 13 years and this year I lead the Badminton group.
I have organised the Singles luncheon group for about 12 years. I also do some charity work.
I have decided to do a Wing Walk for Alzheimers Research.
The event takes place on 16th May at Compton Abbas at approx. 13.30pm
The reason to choose this charity is because the last years of my mother’s life were blighted by this horrible disease.
We are all living longer but we need to add life to these added years; we need some answers. Rather than looking
after people with the disease we need to be able to prevent it or diagnose it earlier and hopefully find a cure.
Everyone has their own favourite charity that they like to support but if you feel you could support Alzheimers
Research that would be wonderful. Donations can be made at www.justgiving.com/Pat-Oriordan or I do have forms
which can be filled in. Many thanks.

Possible new Group
Would anyone be interested in attending or taking part in a class/talk/discussion-group that addressed
Anthropology?
This would provide the opportunity to learn about the evolution of cultural and social behaviour of homo-sapiens
since the earliest available archaeological records, perhaps dating from ten or even twenty millennia ago.
Early people developed mutual communication skills and will have perceived benefits from practicing altruism and
establishing moral codes of behaviour. There will also have been inevitable curiosity about the nature and purpose of
the sun, moon, stars and their own being. In the absence of the tangible evidence available today, some dared to
create notions and of those notions the more impressive or attractive ones became entrenched as popular myths.
Images of gods were invented and religious feelings of homage and veneration were formed.
We do not have a leader so far, but if anyone has the experience to take it on, or if you would like to join such a
group, please contact Bob Reeve at: [email protected]

PUZZLE SPOT
Two women and two doctors walk into an ice cream parlour.
They each order an ice cream cone.
When their ice creams come, there is only 1 strawberry, 1 chocolate and 1 vanilla.
How come they didn't complain?
Last month’s answer – he wouldn’t be able to sell any plums – it is a pear tree!! (Apologies to everyone who
struggled to do the maths)
DID YOU KNOW?
If you count upwards from one and spell out the numbers, you won’t use the letter ‘a’ until you get to one
thousand!!

Damaris Silver Screen is a ground-breaking initiative that seeks to re-engage lonely older
people in cinema as an enriching social activity.
We are pleased that this is also supporting cutting edge research at the University of
Southampton into non-pharmacological interventions for the prevention of dementia.
And we're delighted that the press have also picked up the story which means that momentum
is really building for this fantastic cause.
We plan to do further pilots of Damaris Silver Screen in Wessex before a national roll-out.
Currently we are raising funding for the project through grant applications, corporate sponsors
and the glamorous Rotary Red Carpet Gala Screenings.
