MEMBER OF THE MONTH – Joan Waugh shares her thoughts on being a member. .
I joined Ferndown U3A in September 2001 after my husband died. I knew I had to build another life
for myself and in joining I did exactly that.
I discovered a Group who listened to Classical Music which was my passion as well as attending the
Singles Social Lunches monthly on a Saturday. When I joined the Ferndown Twinning Association I
also joined the French class and when my son gave me a Computer I joined the Computer Group to
learn how to use it and that has been invaluable. Some years later I attended Pat’s Astrology Class in
her home and after that went to the Family History Group.
After the Leader gave up her Classical Music Group I took it on as I had been playing the piano since I
was 6 and had taken up teaching after doing a Diploma in London and I was really glad to get back to
Music again. John now shares it with me and we have an enthusiastic group who have become real
friends over the years. It has given me a wonderful insight into the lives of the Composers and their
music.
On discovering a U3A Summer School in Chichester I ventured into Creative Writing and went to that
for 3 years also doing a Living History Group one year and taking Opera another year. Of course I was
hooked on Creative Writing and have been doing that in Ferndown for about 4 years. This year I’ve
been Discovering Dorset which is great fun.
OCEANARIUM – Half price for March
For the whole of March it is half price for residents at the Oceanarium - £4.25 for Seniors with proof of
residency and can take up to four people with them. In September it is the same offer and then the new
“walking with penguins” feature will be open.

Richard Drew has provided the following regarding ABNORMAL AORTIC ANEURISMS
I am more than happy to include it as my 88 year-old Dad had one burst 17 years ago and is one of the
few to survive to tell the tale. Screening saved him as he was due to have it operated on the following
Monday, so when it burst in the early hours of Saturday morning, my Mum was able to tell the
paramedics what it was, and the surgeon was waiting at the hospital.
During discussions at the last Film Studies session, owing to an issue that arose in the film, I broached the
subject of SCREENING. This was because I have lost two friends to AAA. There are no symptoms, but it is
usually fatal. Screening is quick, free, painless and can lead to successful treatment. Local scanning can
take place at the surgery next to the Barrington Centre.
Here are the details:
Dorset and Wilts AAA Screening Program. NHS scan for men aged 65 and over. To arrange for a scan,
please call with NHS number. Tel: 01722 336262 Ext 2640 or 2539, Email: [email protected].

PUZZLE SPOT
A farmer in Australia grows a beautiful pear tree, which he harvests to supply fruit to all the nearby grocery
stores.
One of the store owners has called the farmer to see how much fruit is available that he can buy.
Unfortunately the farmer isn't currently near the tree, so he has to work it out in his head.
He knows that the main trunk of the tree has 24 branches. That each branch has 12 boughs and that each
bough has only got 6 twigs. Each one of these twigs bears one piece of fruit, so how many plums will he be
able to sell to the store owner?
Last month’s answer – the director would tell him he is crazy. A normal person would just pull the plug out!
