Adult Enrichment Courses Beyond Beginning Excel Most computer users can make a spreadsheet, but many are missing out on the tools available to them through a greater understanding of excel. Learn to create formulas, comparisons, charts and more, which will allow you to organize your work and in the end make your tasks easier. Take your knowledge of excel beyond beginning! Wednesday May 2 to 9 6-8 p.m. North Side Center $30 Instructor: Randy Bow Scratching the Surface! Got and itch to try a new art medium? Scratchboard art can relieve that creative itch. Scratchboard art uses a hardboard that has been covered with fine white clay and sprayed with black india ink. The image is scratched through the ink to reveal the white surface below. Instructor Jenny Etches will guide you in learning scratchboard basics in the first class and will introduce additional scratching tools and the use of color in the second session. No matter your skill level in drawing, you can achieve a pleasing result. Students must bring and x-acto knife and a fine black marker pen to class. All other materials are provided by the instructor. Tuesday May 8 to 15 6-8 p.m. Wendell High School $40 plus $5 material fee paid to the instuctor Instructor: Jenny Etches Watercolors with Roy Mason Wet your brushes and join Roy Mason, award-winning watercolor artist. You’ll learn how watercolor works; how to mix watercolors; and how shapes, spaces, line movement and color composition work together to make a pleasant, well-balanced painting. This course is for both beginning and intermediate students. Space is limited to twelve students, so please register early to reserve a spot. Students will learn to assemble an inexpensive drop spindle, spin yarn by hand, and ply the yarn to make a usable stable yarn. Create beautiful handmade items. Supply fee covers 4oz of spinning fiber and a drop spindle kit. This workshop will cover everything from first setup to accessing the internet, facebook, email, downloading apps and so much more. Wednesday May 16 6-8 p.m. North Side Center $25 Instructor: Robin Bagent No-Fear Dyeing If you can cook a potato, you can dye yarn. Create the color of yarn you want for that special project. Learn to prepare wool yarn for dyeing and techniques to achieve different colors, variations and patterns. Students are required to bring 8-16oz of natural white/off white 100% wool, alpaca, mohair, angora or a combination of these fibers. As a bonus, we will teach you how to dress up your new deck with some handmade furniture to match. This class will cover how to lay out a deck, which supplies to use and steps in building your dream deck. Your instructor is an experienced carpenter. Whether you are just getting started as a runner or are training for a race, you’ll benefit from this class. All levels of fitness are encouraged to join us and start your day out right. Everything from stretching, breathing and form to setting personal fitness goals will be covered. Learn about the various running apparel that’s available, how to recognize and prevent injuries as well as pace work on the track and distance work on the road. Thursday June 21 6-8 p.m. North Side Center $25 Instructor: Joy Garrett From Your Camera to Your Computer…and More It’s easy to take pictures on a digital camera but what do you do after your card is full? This class will take you step by step from snap to print. Learn how to connect your camera to your computer, organize photos and how to utilize online programs to edit and print your photos at your favorite store from the comfort of your own living room. Students need to bring their camera and USB cord. Friday July 13 to 20 3-5 p.m. North Side Center $25 Instructor: Randy Bow Geology of Western National Parks: Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon and Glacier Take a tour of western parks as we examine and discuss the natural wonders that make them magnificent and unique. Look beneath the trees and soil to uncover what makes each park so different. This class will provide insight on basic geology terminology, plate tectonics, geographical features and geologic timelines. Thursday July 19 5-8:30 p.m. North Side Center $15 Instructor: Jennifer Helms Basic Beer Brewing Part home brewing class and part beer appreciation seminar, this class will teach you the methods and tricks to making good quality beer from a large variety of styles. For most of your basic home repairs, we're going to show you the tools and materials you should have to complete most jobs, and how to use them. Thursday July 26 6-8 p.m. North Side Center $20 plus $5 demonstration fee paid to the instructor Instructor: Alan Hendry Understanding the Public Land Survey System (PLSS) The Public Land Survey System (PLSS) is used in every state west of the Mississippi to locate and describe property. Learn how and why the PLSS was established, how to locate property described by it, and get some tips that will help you locate and map property using online tools. This course will be useful for real estate and title professionals, mappers, bankers, attorneys, and anyone who wants to understand land descriptions such as those in land deeds or public notices. Tuesday July 31 8 a.m.-noon North Side Center $40 Instructor: George Yerion College for Kids Courses Kids’ Rockin’ Bowl Grades 2-5 Bowling is back at the Ranch Bowl in Gooding and once you play this fun game, you’ll be hooked! In this class, you’ll learn the rules of the game, how to hold the ball, bowling etiquette, and get some tips on how to throw strikes. After the group lesson, the place really gets rockin’ as the lights go out and the music starts. You’ll also get a small drink and candy from the Ranch Bowl’s snack bar once the group lesson is finished. Please wear socks. This class will also contain a short introduction to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and give you some suggestions on how to incorporate STEM concepts into your family’s routine and conversations. Grades 2-6 Practice decorating bugs and animals on cookies and then decorate a cupcake to take home.
