CIGAR MENU
Welcome to the 1st edition 2013 cigar menu, detailing our current range of Cigars. We strive to offer
something for all tastes and every occasion. We have included notes to assist you in your selection.
The menu is divided into four sections:
1. Cuban Cigars.
2. Other Hand-rolled Cigars.
3. Other Cigars.
4. Information.
1. CUBAN CIGARS.
Let us welcome you to the fascinating and amazing World of the Cuban cigars. There are but a
handful of things in this World that are accepted without a question to be the very best, and Havana
cigar is one of them. We are delighted to offer you the following selection – cigars, which are in the
regular production in Cuba. For the limited or regional edition cigars - please see supplementary
cigar menu. We also stock vintage cigars in store.
QUAI D'ORSAY – The brand was introduced in 1970's especially for French market, since
2011 available in the UK. It takes its name from the well-known street in Paris beside river Seine.
'Claro' stands for 'light' and mirrors preference that French smokers have for lighter coloured
wrappers. It seems that it is not only the appearance but also subtle flavours this cigar is famous for.
Floral and herbal aromas blend smoothly for almost milky smoke, which proves that complexity is
not always about strength.

HOYO DE MONTERREY –
Founded in the mid 1860’s by José Gener, who had
previously grown tobacco in the village of San Juan Y Martinez, which lies in the heart of the
Vuelta Abajo region of Cuba. The light flavour of the Hoyo de Monterrey blend makes it an
attractive choice for those who seek a delicate but aromatic cigar. It is lighter bodied than most
Havanas, its creamy texture and complexity gives it a great elegance.

H. UPMANN – Herman Upmann established this brand in 1844. A banker from Germany,
Herr Upmann was obsessed with the quality of his cigars. Upmann decided to put his signature on
each box when labelling was introduced during the 1860’s, a tradition maintained until this day.
H.Upmann’s handmade cigars are all made from tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo region.
Providing a smooth and subtle light/mild smoke, it is an ideal cigar for those new to Havanas, or a
delightful offer for the regular smoker.

RAFAËL GONZÁLEZ –
Believed to be created by Spanish aristocrat Márquez Rafaël
González in 1928, the full name of the brand is 'Flor de Rafaël González Márquez'. Through the
course of 20th Century the brand changed names and ownership, but is regarded a sister brand to the
El Rey del Mundo. Sharing flavour characteristics with its elder sister and produced solely from
tobaccos grown in famous Vuelta Abajo region of Cuba, it offers distinctive, delicate flavour to be
enjoyed slowly. With its exceptional ageing potential it was quickly recognized by connoisseurs,
proofing common expression that 'stronger tasting cigars age better' a myth.

ROMEO Y JULIETA –
Possibly the best known Havana brand, named after William
Shakespeare’s famous lovers, dates from 1875. Founded by Alvarez y Garcia it was not until 1903,
when Don ‘Pepin’ Fernandez Rodriguez, the factory manager, acquired the business and turned it
into one of Cuba’s leading cigar brands.
Romeo y Julieta’s balanced and aromatic blend of leaves from the Vuelta Abajo region makes it the
classic medium bodied cigar from Havana. The range has a cigar for every occasion, including the
world famous Churchill (named after Sir Winston Churchill).

EL REY DEL MUNDO –
1882 saw the Antonio Allones factory, which had been
producing Havana cigars since 1848, launch a brand of premium quality and price. With great
confidence but little modesty it was named ‘El Rey del Mundo’ – The King of the World. Now
made in the Romeo Y Julieta factory, but still providing it’s world renowned light/medium bodied,
flavour that is full of substance. Again, a cigar ideal for the novice cigar smoker or a daytime
smoke. The small Demi Tasse is an ideal choice as an aperitif cigar.

Founded by Don Manuel Lopez of Juan Valle & Co in 1840. Punch is one of the
oldest Havana brands still being produced. It was established with an eye to the booming British
market where the humorous magazine of the same name was much in vogue. Punch’s very
distinctive light to medium bodied flavour, with a tangy taste and aroma of freshly sawn wood.

MONTECRISTO – Established in 1935 by the Menendez and Garcia families and produced
in the H. Upmann factory. Originally appeared in just five sizes, described by numbers not names.
The other sizes such as the ‘A’ and Especial were added in the early 1970’s. Montecristo’s
distinctive earthy, woody and nutty flavours delighted cigar smokers so much that it has reigned as
the most popular Havana brand for nearly three decades.
The Montecristo ‘A’ and No. 2 are amongst the most prestigious of Cuban cigars and the
Montecristo No. 4 (petit corona size) is the single most popular Havana cigar in the world.
In general, Montecristo offers a medium to fuller flavoured smoke, with a distinguished aroma
appealing to both new and experienced smokers. The classic pyramid shaped larger sized No. 2 is
a rather fuller bodied cigar. Montecristo cigars are never boring and good for any time of the day.

rich medium bodied smoke that can provide a surprising strength when finished.

CUABA –
Launched on the British market in 1996, Cuaba recreates the double figurado /
perfecto shape popular in the 19 th Century, that had virtually disappeared in the 1930’s. Habanos SA
intended, with this brand, to popularise ‘smaller’ cigars. Cigars which give a superb medium to
fuller flavoured, woody smoke, but also owing to the shape, a cigar which offers some delicate
changes to flavour throughout the smoke.

COHIBA – Created in 1966 for personal use of Cuban President Fidel Castro, it was also used
as diplomatic gifts for the heads of state visiting the island. Due to demand, in 1982 it was finally
presented to the world market in limited quantity. Cohiba cigars are produced in once top-secret El
Laguito factory from tobacco being a 'selection of the selection'. Cohiba tobacco comes from the
five finest plantations in Vuelta Abajo and is fermented three times, as opposed to double
fermentation for other Cuban brands. It brings the unique factor to the flavour, characteristic 'grassy'
after-taste Cohiba cigars are famous for. Only the best torcedores (cigar rollers) are employed to
produce Cohiba cigars. Cohiba currently offers four lines, with different body and flavour profiles.

Named after the 16th Century city of La Santisima Trinidad (The Holy Trinity)
on Cuba’s south coast. The brand dates from 1969 but was only released for public sale in 1998.
Before that it was made for Fidel Castro and gifts for important foreign dignitaries. For nearly 6
years there was only one size available but in 2003, three new Vitolas (sizes) were launched.
Originally made at the El Laguito factory and then moved due to demand to Pinar Del Rio City,
these cigars are the quintessentially Cuban, providing a smooth medium smoke with excellently
balanced peppery after taste. A must at some point for any serious cigar smoker.

BOLIVAR – Simon Bolivar was one of the great historic characters of the 19th Century,
liberating much of South America from Spanish rule. In 1901, seventy one years after his death, the
Rocha Company in Havana commemorated him on their cigars. It is perhaps not surprising that a
brand named after such a powerful figure is blended to match his might. Bolivar are amongst the
strongest, most full bodied of all Havanas, boasting an unrivalled richness of flavour.
A robust earthy and peppery full flavoured and bodied smoke, definitely not for the uninitiated.

2. OTHER HANDROLLED CIGARS.
We would now like to open up the world cigars to the 'New World', in particular Central America
and part of the Caribbean. The cigars are mainly made in 'Cuban' style, but the varying tobaccos
produce different and interesting flavours. Following are a few really good examples that we are
proud to offer.
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Lying in the middle of Caribbean with sun always above the head, this once small tobacco growing
country responded well to cigar boom of the 90's and is now one of the major cigar producing
regions in the world. Usually characterised by subtle, light bodied flavour and silky smooth draw.
SANTA DAMIANA – A light cigar produced with the British market very much the target.
Filler made from the Dominican Olor and Piloto plants with just a touch of richer tasting
Nicaraguan added, wrapper from Ecuador. A smooth mild smoke, excellent value for money cigars.

Countries in Central America were a natural choice when Cuban growers went to explore other
regions in order to produce fine tobacco. Honduran tobacco is slightly spicy, blends well with other
types and produces smooth, milky smoke.

OLIVA – SERIE V –
The Oliva family remains one of the most influential tobacco
growing families in Nicaragua. Taking its experience from Cuban heritage started in 1886 in Pinar
del Rio region, Oliva cigars continue to impress. Serie V is rolled from a blend of Nicaraguan long
filler tobaccos. Specially fermented Jalapa Valley ligero leafs for body in the filler, Nicaraguan
binder and a Sun Grown wrapper leaf create a light to medium bodied, smooth and slightly spicy
smoke.

4. INFORMATION.
QUICK REFERENCE TO CIGAR TERMS
Aroma:
Affects the smoker’s sense of smell and taste. Should not be confused
with strength. It refers to bouquet appearing when a new box is opened.
Flavour:
The notes smoker can differentiate on her/his palette while smoking a
cigar. Due to premium cigars being rolled from the full leaf of tobacco,
flavour changes during the course of smoking.. Although fine cigars are
100% tobacco, impressions of for example coffee, woody, peppery,
vanilla, earthy and spicy flavours can be sensed. Blend of different
tobaccos creates refined and unique flavour, characteristic for the
particular brand or line. Cigars could be light or strong on flavour, which
is independent from a body of a cigar. Heavy bodied cigars are not
necessarily stronger on flavour. It is most common misunderstanding.
Body / Strength:
Depends on proportion and types of tobacco leafs used in a cigar blend.
Leafs rich in oils content can give a certain kick or punch while smoked.
Light cigars are smooth and easy going, stronger can 'wake You up'.
Usually it ranges from 1 (light bodied) to 5 (heavy bodied).
Fermentation:
An important and time-consuming process enhancing flavour and
aroma. At the same time nicotine, tar, ammonia, acidity and other
impurities tobacco plant produced in order to grow are reduced.
Vitola:
'Size' - 'Vitola de Galera' - refers to the shape and size of a cigar, used
in cigar factories. Most common are for example: robusto, corona, toro,
churchill, piramide. 'Vitola de Salida' – refers to the name cigars are
sold under and known to smokers. Sometimes cigar is given it's vitola de
salida name exactly the same as vitola de galera.
Torcedores:
Highly skilled cigar rollers, who go through a lengthy training process
before being allowed to produce cigars.
Filler / Binder / Wrapper – Tobacco leafs differ depend on part of the plant they grew at. They
also could have different thickness, richness, aroma and, when smoked,
flavour. Therefore they serve different purpose in an 'anatomy' of
a cigar. Filler is a 'heart' of a cigar, a bunch of leafs creating a blend
then tasted. Binder holds them together so they will not unravel while
ignited, and wrapper serves a purpose of pristine presentation.
Puro
When cigar is made with tobacco growing in one region of the world
and not blend of few coming from different regions, it is called 'puro'.
Parejo:
Most common cigar shape today. 'Parejo' means 'straight' in Spanish, so
from head to foot of a cigar it has the same diameter.
Figurado/Perfecto:
Figurado covers all irregular cigar shapes. Perfecto, pointed both ends
(Torpedo style) with a bulge in the middle. It was popular over 100
years ago coming from common belief that a smoker can cut cigar's head
to his preferred diameter and light it up easily from the pointed foot. It
was considered a 'perfect' shape.
Foot:
Tuck end, the end of the cigar that is lit. When the cigar is made the
wrapper is rolled from the base of the cigar upwards, hence the tuck end.
Head:
The end of the cigar you place in your mouth, when smoking. This is the
end that has to be cut before smoking.
Small, cut-up pieces of tobacco normally used for machine made cigars.
Short Filler:
Long Filler:
Used in handmade cigars, it means full leafs of tobacco are prepared for
the filler of a cigar and not cut pieces. It ensures even burn and flavour
developing / changing while the cigar is smoked.
Maduro:
Rich, dark brown wrapper leaf, comes from the Spanish word for ‘ripe’.
It is obtained by longer ageing period, in which tobacco is left to mature.
It not necessarily means cigar is fuller bodied.
Sun-grown:
Tobacco plants grown totally in sunlight. Much of the tobacco used in
cigar production. Direct sun develops high oil content in a leafs.
Shade-grown:
Tobacco plants grown under a muslin cloth, totally covered from direct
sunlight. This type is used for wrapper leafs, producing more 'elastic',
thinner, smooth surfaced and pristine looking leafs. Great care needs to
be taken in handling, fermentation and ageing process for wrapper leafs.
Box Pressed:
When cigars are packed in flat (dress) box, they tend to get squeezed and
develop square edges.
Cabinet Selection:
Cigars can be packed in many ways, usually in beautiful labelled boxes
of several types. It used to be that they were part of larger collection
being shipped on request in a form of a cabinet full of cigars and made
on order. 'Slots' or 'drawers' were small sliding lid boxes with 25 or 50
cigars, hence the name.
Ageing
The process that is known among connoisseurs to alter cigar flavours
and bring pure tobacco oil characteristics up front, leaving some 'fresh
tobacco' taste out. When 'young' cigars may be more robust and appear
to some, aged cigars tend to open a whole new palette of flavours,
sometimes significantly different than when fresh. Process can be even
prolonged to decades, making some old cigars sought after by collectors.
To make it more effective and not 'rush' it, the relative humidity to store
cigars destined for ageing should be set between 60 and 65%.
Vintage
The year cigars were put into boxes, not the year they were produced. In
Cuba it is stamped on boxes, from 2000 onwards in clear month
(abbreviation from Spanish word) / year (2 digit) code. The term also
refers to aged cigars, stating the long time since they were produced and
put aside in boxes for ageing.
STORING YOUR CIGARS
Cigars require certain conditions in order to store them correctly ready for smoking.
When temperature is important, relative humidity is more crucial and should be kept at constant
levels. We keep cigars in the shop ready for you to enjoy any time you come by. If you are aiming
to store your cigars, special boxes called 'humidors' serve the purpose. Recommended temperature
to store cigars is 17-18°C and relative humidity between 65 and 70%. For ageing purpose,
recommended humidity is on the lower side, slowing down the process, usually between 60 and
65%.
ENJOYING YOUR CIGAR
Having made your selection from our wide range of quality cigars, we want you to get maximum
pleasure, satisfaction and enjoyment from your cigar. Hopefully the following few notes will assist.
CUTTING
The head of a handmade cigar is sealed with a cap of tobacco, which helps to secure the wrapper
leaf in place and prevents head of a cigar unravel while smoking. Before lighting you need to create
an opening enabling you to draw your cigar. We suggest this is done by using a cigar cutter, the
most popular style being a guillotine. Make your cut across the shoulders of the cigar, leaving the
bottom part of the cap in place to avoid the wrapper unravelling.
Removing the band at this stage can damage the delicate wrapper leaf. If you wish to take the band
off the best advice is to do so after smoking for around 10 minutes, when the cigar has softened
warmed up and the band is easier to remove. It is best to slide it off the end of the cigar.
LIGHTING
Lighting is about following two simple rules, take your time, and do a thorough job. The whole of
the foot of a cigar must be alight before you settle back to enjoy smoking. This is best done by
rotating the cigar above the flame. Lighting can be done with a wooden match (once the head has
burned off) or butane gas lighter (not petrol lighters or wax candles / tapers as they will taint the
flavour). It is better to do it slowly, allowing full combustion of the tobacco and not turning cigar to
ash immediately.
SMOKING
A quality cigar should be smoked slowly. It should be sipped, rather then gulped or it may overheat,
which will detract from the flavours. Gently draw the smoke into your mouth and allow it to play
gloriously on your taste buds. (DO NOT INHALE – This is not a cigarette).
Relax and really savour the subtle flavours and aromas of the tobaccos. It is fine to relight your cigar
if it goes out, but first clean any loose ash or you will find it’s difficult to re-ignite.
When the sad moment comes to part with your cigar, do not
crush it to pulp. Lay it to rest in the ashtray, it will go out
by itself. Allow it to die with dignity.
