Golden Eagle Gazette Parent Newsletter of Fleming Island High School Spring March April 2015 Preparing tomorrow’s leaders, today. I N S I D E Romeo & Juliet page 2 Merit Finalists page 7 FBLA page 13 NJROTC page 16 Senior Info page 20 Dear Parents, Students, and Community Members, Since our last publication, we were notified that, once again, we are an “A” school and ranked #1 in the county and in the top 30 or 7% out of approximately 460 public schools in the state. Our ranking is quite impressive when you consider that we are a true community high school and are ranked with magnet and charter schools. We are extremely proud of our students, teachers, staff, and parents for their hard work and dedication to being the best. The students of Fleming Island have been very busy this past month and the next several ones. Our drama and musical theatre students put on the play “High School Not Musical” in the beginning of March. Our National Honor Society inducted 130 new members into our local chapter in a beautiful ceremony. The annual Kaleidoscope Concert with our band will take place on March 31st. The ASL students will be performing their annual Hands Performance on Friday, April 10th. Our musical theatre students will be performing the play “Thoroughly Modern Millie” on April 24th and 25th. Our seniors will be attending Grad Bash on Friday, April 17th. Prom is scheduled for Saturday, May 9th at the University of North Florida. Senior week is scheduled for the week of May 18th to May 21st. The big event for all seniors is graduation on Friday, May 29th at 8:00 in our stadium. Congratulations to our varsity cheerleaders who finished 2nd at the FHSAA State Championships. The dance team was also named the American Championship State Champions in Varsity Hip Hop Division for the fourth year in a row. Our girls’ varsity basketball team won districts, a regional quarterfinal game, and represented us well in the regional semifinals. Both our boys’ and girls’ soccer teams represented our school well and advanced to the second round of the state playoffs. The robotics team placed 14th out of 152 schools in the state of Florida, which is incredible in our first year of competition. Our Gold Eagle Band has been very busy and won first place in several competitions as well as received numerous superior ratings recently. The wrestling team placed second in districts and sent 6 wrestlers on to the state level. We are proud of all of our students and their sportsmanship when representing Fleming Island High School. As we prepare for End-of-Course exams and the FSA testing, I would like to remind you how important it is to relax while taking your tests. You must get a good night’s sleep and try to have a good breakfast in the morning. Remember to re-read questions and check your answers. Good luck and do your best. Sincerely, Thomas E. Pittman T E S T I N G End of the Year testing is fast approaching. After Spring Break, when we return, teachers and students will have about two weeks before the remainder of the testing begins. The End of Course exams and ELA (English/Language Arts) testing begins April 13th. We will be assessing students in their English/Language Arts classes first, grades 9 & 10, followed by Algebra II, Geometry, U. S. History, Biology, and ending with Algebra I. There is a listening portion in the ELA assessment which requires the use of headphones/earbuds. Students will be allowed to use their own headphones/earbuds for that portion. Each of these assessments is given in two sessions over two days with each session scheduled for 90 minutes. We are given certain guidelines by the state in which testing must start and be completed. We are requesting all students are present during the period of time they are scheduled for testing. Please make every effort to ensure your student is present and ready for their tests on their test days. Also, in the newsletter, the state has provided us with information to be provided to all stakeholders. If you have any questions regarding testing, please feel free to call (541-2122) or email me ([email protected]). Debra Gaynes, Assistant Principal Golden Eagle Gazette Spring 2015 Page 2 The Academy of Visual and Performing Arts presents Romeo and Juliet The ninth graders in the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts experienced a true thematic learning activity centered on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. In a true cross-curricular approach, students participated in projects in Biology, English, and Math that helped them gain an in depth understanding of Shakespeare’s play. In a culminating activity, academy students were treated to a live production ninth graders in the theater program “I prefer live performances to movies any day of the week. This live performance made me so proud, once again, to be a part of this wonderful family at Fleming Island High as well as to be a part of the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts,” shared Mary Soud, Academy English teacher and Team Facilitator for the academy. 2-D and 3-D art classes created the many props used in the play and the creative photography classes created posters “advertising” the event. The fashion students designed and created many of the male costumes used in the play. This is the first thematic learning activity for the new Academy of Visual and Performing Arts and it was an excellent start for many to come! Fleming Island High School Digital Design II and III and VyStar Business & Finance Academy Digital II and III students are continuously given opportunities to showcase their graphic design talents through creating marketing logos and promotional materials for use both in and out of the school each year. The students are able to realize the real- world application of the skills they learn in class and see them applied beyond the classroom walls. They begin to understand the amount of extra time and effort needed to have that marketing material just right to present to their clientele. Congratulations for sharing your exceptional skills in design and being chosen to represent your school and community in this way. We look forward to many more students having these opportunities to shine! Students of the Quarter The following students were recently recognized as “Students of the Quarter” for the Academy of Digital Media and the VyStar Academy of Business and Finance. Golden Eagle Gazette College Placement Tests It is recommended that all students begin taking the SAT and/or the ACT in the spring of their junior year. We also encourage students to take the Practice ACT and the PSAT as early as their freshman year, as this allows the opportunity to take an actual assessment without it being on your record. After the test, students keep the test booklet and get a solution key. Within a few days, students receive a complete analysis that pinpoints areas of weakness to help focus improvement efforts. To register through the mail, you can pick up registration packets in the Guidance Office. Spring 2015 Page 5 Congratulations! Golden Eagle Gazette One Eagle Soars Spring 2015 Parents: When sending in a note regarding your child’s absence from school, please be sure to put your child’s first and last name as well as the grade level. Also, when you are giving permission for your student to leave campus early. Student should bring a note from parent first thing in the morning to the front office secretary. A pass will then be given to the student to be dismissed early. This eliminates disruption during teaching time. After 39 years of hard work and dedication to students, Assistant Principal, Mr. John Chappell retired at the end of January. We would like to take this opportunity to say “goodbye” with hopes that in his retirement he finds more than he is looking for and everything that he deserves. Mr. Chappell’s infectious smile and his “can-do” attitude will certainly be missed. SAC Meeting April 9 The School Advisory Council of Fleming Island High School will hold a SAC meeting on Thursday, April 9th at 2:00 p.m. in the school media center. At this meeting, a review of the school improvement plan will take place. Parents of Fleming Island High students are encouraged to attend. Page 6 From the Nurse The FIHS spring Blood Drive is scheduled for April 14. Sign-ups for students ages 16 and up will begin April 1st. 16 year olds must have parent permission to donate, so see nurse to pick up consent forms. Remember to eat an iron rich diet if you plan to donate, as this helps to boost energy levels and prevent post donation lethargy. Spring is upon us: Students with seasonal allergies and asthma need to be prepared. To reduce time lost from class, parents may bring in medications including OTC meds (Benadryl, Sudafed, Tylenol, etc) to the clinic for their child to access under nurse supervision, if needed during the school day. Dress Code Issues: Be sure your child follows dress code when choosing attire for warmer weather. Tank tops (less than 4 fingers width), spaghetti straps, low cut shirts, shorts and skirts more than 3” above the knee, and leggings/yoga pants are NOT permitted. Time missed from class as a result of a dress code violation is unexcused. A good rule of thumb is if there is any question as to whether it’s appropriate, choose another. Please check the Lost and Found for any items you might be missing. I have quite a collection of cups, lunchboxes, and clothing that have been turned in. If you have any questions regarding the blood drive, meds, forms, dress code, or general health issues you may contact the nurse directly at 541-2080. Foods From Around the World Mrs. Harris' Hospitality classes completed projects on Foods From Around the World. Her classes presented the countries; Italy, Germany, Mexico, England, Ireland and China. Students had to research the history, physical environment, traditional meals, etiquette and typical foods from their country. Along with a power point, the students had to plan a meal for the class including a main dish, side dish and a dessert. Some of the foods prepared were breakfast burritos from Mexico, homemade pizza from Italy, erdbeerkuchen, bauernfruhstuck, and spaetzle from Germany, sheppard's pie from England, soda bread from Ireland and fried rice and fortune cookies from China! Everything was delicious and the students thoroughly enjoyed this unit of study! Golden Eagle Gazette Spring 2015 Page 7 Six Fleming Island High School students are named National Merit Finalists The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has recognized the following six Fleming Island High School seniors as finalists in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship competition: Daniela Rodriguez, Martine Montgomery, Joseph Wittman, Nolan Johnston, Emma Doukmak, and Katie Bohn. These students have distinguished themselves among 1.5 million students from more than 21,000 high schools. The PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, taken during the junior year, serves as the initial screen of program entrants. Among the 1.5 million entrants in the program, only 15,000 are recognized as finalists, and only 8,000 will become Merit Scholarship winners. Representing less that 1 percent of each state's high school seniors, semifinalists are the highest-scoring program entrants in each state. To become a finalist, a semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, must be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and must earn SAT scores that confirm the student's earlier performance on the qualifying test. The semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes the student's self-descriptive essay and information about the semifinalist's participation and leadership in school and community activities. Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered in the spring of 2015. Every finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 scholarships that will be awarded on a state-representational basis. About 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will be provided by approximately 240 corporations and business organizations for finalists who meet their specified criteria, such as children of the grantor's employees or residents of communities where sponsor plants or offices are located. In addition, about 200 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 4,100 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for Finalists who will attend the sponsor institution. National Merit Scholarship winners of 2015 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join more than 308,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title. BETA provides plenty of opportunities for volunteer hours. The Team also took home the prestigious Inspire Award which qualified them for the Florida State Championship on February 14th in Tampa. At State’s, the team finished 14th out of 27 invited teams. Finishing so high at State’s and being in the top 10% of all 152 Florida teams was an amazing performance for a rookie team. So much so, that out of 9 team awards made at State’s, the FIHS Robotics Team received the optional Judges Award. “We all learned so much this year; especially, from seeing world-class robots compete at State’s. Now we know what it takes to have a world-class robot,” said Coach Altman. This expansion into robotics at Clay County High Schools wouldn’t be possible without tremendous support from the county office, Clay County Teachers going the extra mile, and a Department of Defense Grant to provide the funding. Golden Eagle Gazette Spring 2015 Page 14 Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) CTSO member, FIHS FBLA Chapter President and current Florida FBLA Region II Vice President, Rachel Kirkland, had the wonderful opportunity to visit our State Capitol during CTE month. She along with her other FBLA and Phi Beta Lambda state officers met, toured, took part in a role play Bill on the Senate floor and were given the opportunity to question over 20 State Senators and Representatives along with our Florida Chief Financial Officer, Jeff Atwater and Senate President Andy Gardiner. This all took place while on a Future Business Leaders of American State Officer Leadership trip to Tallahassee during the second week of February (CTE on the Hill week). This was an opportunity of a life time to see inside our government that most who tour the Capital are not given. She was honored to sit in our Chief Justice’s chair in the Supreme Court and meet our Senate President, Andy Gardiner. She also enjoyed getting to see where her own local House of Representative, Travis Cummings from Orange Park works. She has interned for Representative Cummings at his Orange Park office and this added a special element to the tour. Being able to see how the court system is working for us and interact with our state representatives was very informative. As a state officer of FBLA, it has helped Rachel to enhance her leadership and personal skills and many opportunities to meet and work with so many around the state. She encourages other students to stay involved in their local career technical student organization like FBLA, take on leadership roles at the local and district level and consider running for state office as well. On-Campus Parking: Please be aware that only Seniors and Juniors are allowed to drive to school and park on the campus. This year we have 533 seniors and 556 juniors. The school only has 475 parking places for students. Early in the year, part of the lot may be not be full, but as the year goes on more Seniors and Juniors will acquire cars and the lot becomes overloaded. No sophomores will be driving and parking on campus this year. Cars without parking stickers will be towed! Student drop off and pick up: Parents, if you are dropping off or picking up your student from school, please use the entrance leading to the main entrance to the school (south side facing shops). Do not pick up or drop off at the gym end of the school – this is the student parking area and we need to get the students into the lots in the morning and out in the afternoon.
