She is interested in fabrics, pattern and colour, and her influences range from the primitive to the kitsch. Although some of the work may have a dark edge, it is impossible to escape the sense of fun, and the joy of making, which is in evidence throughout her work. Taking its name from a popular children’s book by Ann and Paul Rand, Sparkle and Spin features new ‘soft sculpture’ characters and large-scale installation pieces in an exhibition that includes plenty to enthral and inspire visitors, young and old alike. DIARY 5 THE MAKING OF US Robert Burns Centre Film Theatre 10 May – 5 July Gallery 1 & 2 South by South West 25 The exhibition is presented as part of ‘GENERATION’ – a national project reflecting 25 years of contemporary art in Scotland to celebrate the Commonwealth Games cultural programme in 2014. Curated in collaboration with the South by South West partner venues; Dick Institute, Kilmarnock and Rozelle Galleries, Ayr, the selected artists are: Graham Fagen, Christine Borland and Dalziel & Scullion. All three artists will be represented at each venue during the exhibition programme this summer. At Gracefield the exhibition reflects an interest in the natural environment, and explores themes as diverse as botanical plant archives, art in the land and cultural identity. The artists have individually worked closely with each venue and the exhibitions will include major works from their archives. GENERATION is being delivered through a partnership between the National Galleries of Scotland and Glasgow Life, and is supported by Creative Scotland. The programme aims to shine a spotlight on the past 25 years - a period which has seen Scotland develop an international reputation as a distinguished centre for contemporary art, produce a disproportionate amount of award-winning artists, host a number of ground-breaking exhibitions and foster an infrastructure which has helped allow contemporary art to flourish. Dalziel + Scullion, Wolf, 2012 (film still) Also in Gallery 1, see a selection of works from the Gracefield Permanent Collection reflecting the last 25 years in Scottish Fine Art. 6 Saturday 10th May (11am) Commissioned by the Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art 2012 at Tramway in Glasgow, Graham Fagen and Graham Eatough’s intriguing film blurs the boundaries between theatre, art and cinema. DIARY 12 July – 9 August Gallery2 Denise Zygadlo Wrap Our emotional response to cloth, our second skin, is explored in ‘Wrap’. The intimacy of a photocopied image, where the subject matter is pressed against the glass, capturing the raw detail of skin and fabric, is the focus of Denise Zygadlo’s work – “We are surrounded by cloth from the moment we are born. We make choices about its qualities; texture weight, colour, smell for the countless ways we employ cloth in our everyday lives.” The central focus of ‘Wrap’ is an installation of life-size wrapped figures on silk hangings incorporating video footage in collaboration with filmmaker John Wallace. In contrast to the hangings, large scale charcoal drawings and works on canvas are mounted on the walls. The opening on Saturday 12 July (1pm & 2pm) will present a new collaborative performance by the artist with Florencia Garcia Chafuen and Tara Hodgson accompanied by a string quartet to music composed by Rudi Zygadlo. ALBA | CHRUTHACHAIL Tickets £4 available in advance from Gracefield , or last minute on the door if space permitting. 1pm, first performance, duration: 15-mins , 2pm. second performance. Access to the gallery will be unavailable during the performance and visitors will be directed in and out of the gallery from the side door. In addition to the exhibition, Denise will be investigating personal cloth related memories. You are invited to share reflections of significant associations you have with cloth and bring your stories, photos or objects to create a display for the duration of the show. There will be opportunities to join informal group discussion about ‘Wrap’ with Denise in the gallery. He lived and worked in New York City and Long Island, NY and was one of the main artists associated with Minimalism. Alongside a major new ARTIST ROOMS work “untitled (to Don Judd, colorist) 1‑5” 1987, Gracefield is also presenting works on loan from the Tate and the National Gallery of Scotland collections. These are some of the most iconic works of Minimalism and show the key aspects of Flavin’s practice: his decision to restrict his materials to commercially available fluorescent tubes in different sizes, his dedication to working in series and to a serial arrangements of tubes, and finally his interest in dedicating his works through their titles to other artists. The sculpture installations will transform the Gracefield gallery spaces and offer audiences the first chance to engage with this challenging and fascinating body of work, some of which has never been seen in Scotland before.
