Preliminary Technical Report ELPEGUARD SL 1400 ECO-FLZ
1.
General information
The conformal/permanent coating ELPEGUARD SL 1400 ECO-FLZ, colourless, fluorescent is a
humidity curing 1-pack conformal/permanent coating based on chemically reactive polyurethane
resins (PUR).
2.
Application
The conformal/permanent coating ELPEGUARD SL 1400 ECO-FLZ is used as a protective and
insulating lacquer; it
• protects assembled pcbs even under increased climatic stress against moisture, especially
against the effects of condensate,
• insulates electrical equipment, connections, switch panels, terminal boards, etc.
• can be soldered-through for repair purposes at soldering iron temperature and subsequently reapplied.
The conformal/permanent coating ELPEGUARD SL 1400 ECO-FLZ is used to protect assembled
pcbs that have to fulfil high requirements regarding quality and service life. Its resistance corresponds to that of a 2-pack conformal/permanent coating so that it offers highest climatic protection
at high temperatures and high humidities (85 °C/85 % r. h., see also Item 6.2 “Physical and mechanical properties“) and also regarding its electrical properties is suitable for highest requirements
and thus also for the coating of assembled pcbs or flat packs for:
•
•
•
•
•
high-performance electronics
•
•
•
•
•
the military sector
3.
the automotive industry

appliances for telecommunications.
Special notes
The conformal/permanent coating ELPEGUARD SL 1400 ECO-FLZ is an ecologically modern
product (ECO = ecological): It has a high solids content, is free of aromatic solvents and heavy
metals and thus fulfils the requirements of the “lead-free regulation” (EU Vehicle End-Of-Life Directive 2000/53/EG).
The conformal/permanent coating ELPEGUARD SL 1400 ECO-FLZ can be used at temperatures
of -40 up to +130 °C [-40 – 266 °F] while at the lower and at the upper ends of this range the behaviour as well as the performance of the material can be negatively affected in case of some applications. Here additional pre-trials and tests are required.
To complement the process parameters indicated in this preliminary technical report the Application Information sheet AI 1/1 “Processing instructions for the conventional physically drying/oxidative curing conformal/permanent coatings of the series SL 1300 to SL 1309 N“ gives further and more detailed information and notes that need to be observed to achieve an optimum
processing result. In our report manual the Application Information sheet AI 1/1 is filed under
Group 1. On our report manual CD as well as on our web-site application information sheets can
be accessed in the “Service“ section.

Processing
! Read our Application Information sheet AI 1/1 “Processing instructions for the conventional physically drying/oxidative curing conformal/permanent coatings of the series
ELPEGUARD SL 1300 to ELPEGUARD SL 1309 N” where you will find detailed information on
processing. In our report manual this Application Information sheet is filed under group 1. On
our report manual CD as well on our web-site application information sheets can be accessed in
the “Service“ section.
The conformal/permanent coating ELPEGUARD SL 1400 ECO-FLZ can be applied by means of
automatic, selective coating units as well as by means of brushing or spraying. On account of the
humidity sensitivity of the conformal/permanent coating application by means of dip coating can
only be performed under dry inert gas.
On account of the humidity sensitivity work tools made of stainless steel and, if necessary, teflon
coated hoses are particularly recommended when processing the conformal/permanent coating
ELPEGUARD SL 1400 ECO-FLZ.
The conformal/permanent coating ELPEGUARD SL 1400 ECO-FLZ cures under the influence of moisture. Take measures, such as using dry inert gas, to
protect the lacquer against moisture during processing.
You must clean the threads of opened containers with the cleaning agent
R 5804 or the thinner V 1400 ECO and then re-close the containers tightly.
Partially filled containers must be filled with dry inert gas.
7.1 Adjustment of viscosity
! Adjust the processing viscosity of the conformal/permanent coating ELPEGUARD
SL 1400 ECO-FLZ by means of the thinner V 1400 ECO (see also Item 3.1 of the Application
Information sheet AI 1/1).
7.2 Auxiliary products
! Clean the coating equipment with the cleaning agent R 5804. Check the resistance of the material, particularly the seals. We recommend the use of seals made of Teflon®- or Viton®.
We recommend the use of the cleaning agent R 5817 to clean work place and tools and the use of
the cleaning agent R 5804 or the thinner V 1400 ECO to clean the threads of opened containers.

Preliminary Technical Report ELPEGUARD SL 1400 ECO-FLZ
Do not use the cleaning agents to clean hands. Solvents extract the natural
grease from the skin.
Special technical reports on these products are available upon request. In our report manual these
technical reports are filed under group 5. On our report manual CD technical data sheets can be
accessed in the “Products“ section.
Removal of the conformal/permanent coating ELPEGUARD SL 1400 ECO-FLZ by means of
cleaning agents/ strippers for repair purposes after final curing is virtually impossible. Since aggressive cleaning agents/strippers may also dissolve the components of flat packs these products
should only be used after suitable pre-trials.
7.3 Coating
! Ensure that the surface to be coated is clean, grease-free and dry.
! When processing please pay special attention to the notes under Item 4 “precleaning“ and Item
5 “coating“ of the Application Information sheet AI 1/1.
When applying the lacquer by means of compressed-air spraying the safety
precautions of the German Accident Prevention Regulation "Processing of
Coating Materials" (VGB 23 in future BGV D 25), especially section IV Operation (§§ 17-22), and of the German Explosion Protection Regulations (BGR
104) or of corresponding national regulations must be observed.
When processing the lacquer by means of spraying it is mandatory to take
protection measures to avoid a formation of solvent vapour mixtures that
might explode.
Filter mats impregnated with lacquer and solvent residues in spraying cabins
may self-ignite. Use water-irrigated spraying cabins to avoid the risk of the
filter mats self-igniting. Moreover, observe the operating and maintenance
instructions of the spraying cabin and filter mat manufacturers.
8.
Drying/Curing
After application the conformal/permanent coating ELPEGUARD SL 1400 ECO-FLZ initially dries
physically (see also Item 7.1 “physical drying” of the AI 1/1) and then finally cures under reaction
with atmospheric moisture.
Guidelines for drying a wet film thickness of 75 µm at room temperature:
Tack-dry (dust dry):
40 min
Dry (tack-free):
90 min
Complete takes approx. 48 to 96 hrs and depends, among others, on the component geometry, the
applied lacquer layer thickness and the atmospheric humidity.
On account of the atmospheric humidity required for curing oven drying of this lacquer system is
not recommended. It is mandatory to ensure that enough humidity is available for curing.
! Determine the optimum parameters for oven curing by means of pre-trials.
9.
Standard packaging
The conformal/permanent coating ELPEGUARD SL 1400 ECO-FLZ is packed for delivery as follows:
Can of 25 kg = 1 selling unit.
The thinner V 1400 ECO is available in cans of 23.5 kg.
Partial lots of the selling unit may be ordered, but will entail surcharges to cover repackaging costs.
10. Storage
In a cool, dry place, sealed original containers can be stored for at least 6 months. For warehousing reasons, isolated cases may occur where the shelf life upon shipment is less than the shelf life
indicated in this technical report. However, it is ensured that our products have at least two-thirds
of their shelf life remaining when they leave our company.
