Bring History to Your School!
Singing Through History
Folk Music and Social Studies Assemblies for Schools
Adam Miller on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDJZS2bTTqo
"Adam Miller took our children back in time in a way that made history real. He is
masterful at balancing a fun, engaging assembly that exposes the children to folk music
with a history lesson on the United States."
-Raymond Dawley, Principal, Fair Oaks Elementary, Redwood City, California
Dear California Educator,
I'll be presenting school assemblies in California: May 27 - 30, 2014.
For over two decades I have presented multi-cultural "Singing Through History!" folk music assemblies and
classroom programs at schools and libraries across the United States.
These highly entertaining and educational programs aid in the development of cultural and historical literacy,
emphasizing the importance of history as a story well told. Students have a great time learning about
American folklore and folk traditions while singing along.
All programs are designed to encourage group singing and interactivity, and are tailored to be age
appropriate for any combination of grades. I have programs for elementary schools, middle schools and high
schools, as well.
For more about information, please visit my website:
Folksinging.org
With over a dozen entertaining assembly programs, I can easily perform two different 45-60 minute
assemblies in a back-to-back booking.
My fee is $795 for one assembly, $895 for two back-to-back assemblies, and $1,095 for three (in one
location). There are no additional fees!
Please contact me to schedule assemblies at your school. I look forward to singing with you and your
students!
-Adam Miller

-Vicki Bruce, Children's Librarian

attention and transported them with song and laughter through 400 years of history."
-Ketchikan, Alaska Sitnews
“Adam's wonderful songs, warm personality, and depth of knowledge engaged our audience, both young and
old. History comes alive and songs are remembered by the old and passed on to the young. I would highly
recommend Adam Miller for a presentation.”
-Carol Race, Program Director

"What a wonderfully energizing way to celebrate connections with our past history through
engaging, interesting, and delightful music. "

our Kinders on the edge of their criss-cross-applesauce seats on the floor. The joy in his music is contagious,
a profound treat for our early learners.”
-Kathleen Rushing, Kindergarten Teacher
Pioneer Elementary School, Union City, California
“Adam Miller: Witty, humorous, and full of wisdom. Great with kids of all ages.”

Dennis,
I am sorry that it has taken me so long to respond to this. We spent all day yesterday out of town at a funeral. I have looked through this
Agenda and it looks great to me. Much of what is on it will lead to much more detailed conversation. I am doing what I can on my end to
create an atmosphere of collaboration for this workshop.
Thank you again,

Dear MaryI forgot to mention to you in my previous e-mail that after working on the digital footprint,
it helped me realize how very important it was to check the internet for these things. I found two articles from newspapers I
was quoted in that I didn't even know exist. Secondly, I didn't know that I was included in a "Hometown Hotties" group,
(nothing I subscribed to off course).
Well, the week after doing this symposium, I judged the Miss America pageant for our local Placentia/Yorba Linda crowning.
One of my interview questions was..."If we checked your digital footprint, would we find anything that might 'tarnish' your
crown or embarrass your grandmother' "?
The other judges didn't even know what I was talking about but the girls sure did... and some were caught off-guard. After
their answers, the other judges were amazed by the question and said it was one of the most relevant questions they had ever
heard a judge ask. THANK YOU!
So, after this occurred, one of the girls asked if she could be part of working with my school capstone as part of her
platform. On March 15th she is going to be presenting a seminar to 100 of my students on how to "clean up your digital
footprint" as my Super Saturday Session. She is now Miss Yorba Linda and will be using this as part of her platform in the
Miss California pageant.
Since the word got out about this, I have three other schools that are adopting my capstone project in our district.
AMAZING!
Thanks again for such a relevant symposium and assignment.
Best regards,
Shane Twamley

Nonetheless, this email causes me concern because I have not seen a grade for my assignment yet.
Is your email being sent to all symposium attendees, or, is this being sent to those who the graders can not access?
Is it possible a query could be run and an email sent to ONLY those who the graders are locked out from. Sending out a block email like this
causes more anxiety for me when I believe I have already done this correctly and I need to focus my energies on my capstone writing
efforts.
Thank you for your efforts to give us a working model from the symposium. Mr. Honeycutt really opened my eyes to the benefits of digital
media and your assignment brought me further into the realm of technology than what I have ventured into previously.

This is just a reminder that some of you have still not changed the SHARE setting on your GOOGLE SITES. Failure to do this will result in
a failing grade because the graders are unable to access your narrative to assign a grade. See the details on the assignment and the
previous announcement and/or email for specifics on how to do this.
The graders must be finished grading by Saturday noon.
Please take care of this immediately.

National Council on Educating Black Children
From the desk of: Diana Daniels, Executive Director
My Brother's Keeper
The National Council on Educating Black Children commends our President Barack
Obama for developing a national initiative for Black and Latino Males; an elevated
focus that is supported by our Board of Directors and our membership.
For 27 years, NCEBC has been committed to improving the academia of rigor and
relevant instruction for African American children. In 2006, after the Schott
Foundation report on Black Males in Public Schools, a new priority emerged for
NCEBC. We declared that the absence of educational equity, justice and quality in
schools, have an adverse effect on building positive outcomes for Black males , as
reported by researchers. A "Call for Action" was sounded at our 2007 Convention in
Norfolk, VA, with school district teams, writing Black Male Action Plans (BMAPs) that
identified issues and solutions for school drop- outs, suspensions, expulsions, low
graduation rates, cultural incompetency and illiteracy.
At each subsequent annual convention, delegates are engaged in a process to
develop community, school, or district BMAP's. The charge to teams is to: 1) return
to their cities, share the BMAP through a report out to the community at large, 2)
engage stakeholders to further define the plan, and eventually 3) establish a
Commission for Educational Equity, Justice and Quality for African American
Children. The Commissions are comprised of stakeholders listed in our flagship
document, The Blueprint for Action. Our Black Male Action Planning process has
been conducted with over 107 cities, school districts, and Nova Scotia.
Far too long, too many young males of color have been sacrificed, by the wealthiest
nation on the planet. In the words of Nelson Mandela, "You can judge the soul of a
nation by the way it treats their children." The declaration to elevate this discussion
to a national level is welcomed with exuberance.
NCEBC continues to address the areas research identifies as correlates with school
failure. We collaborate with stakeholders, and maintain a growing partnership with
faith-based institutions, school districts, and community centers, to establish
Augustus F. Hawkins Literacy Centers. Currently there are 17 Literacy Centers
operating in 6 states. NCEBC provides a challenging and culturally relevant
curriculum for grades preK-6,that is in alignment with common core standards, and
a strong focus on identity development. Pre and post reading assessments are
given to students enrolled in our school-based centers, in addition all students
receive three age-appropriate books a year, for their personal library. We encourage
the incorporation of technology to under-grid instruction in our Literacy Centers.
Once again, our Board of Directors and membership, congratulate President
Once again, our Board of Directors and membership, congratulate President
Obama, supportive corporations and dedicated researchers for spiraling the
educational, social and judicial concerns of Black and Latino Males to a national
level!

David,
I just wanted to thank you for your help in promoting our STING program and give you an update. There is only one school (Cajon Valley)
that we have not made in person contact with to put up a banner and have their help in promoting. Your efforts have made it easy for my
students to reach out to most schools because they have stopped by and the teacher, secretary, or admin person they have met with have
already been made aware thanks to your outreach. We are hoping this year's event will draw our largest attendance to date, and we are on
our way because about 50 students have already registered - so far so good.
On another note, I know you are coming to visit next Wednesday with Tamara and I am excited about this outreach. The division in districts
(K-8 and 9-12) is somewhat anomalous and there have always been problems with articulation; I am hoping this work can begin to bridge
that gap and I hope I see you Wednesday.
Lastly, I wanted to set up a time to speak with you about language immersion. This has become a passion for me and I think we have
developed a plan that may be replicatable - it's actually pretty simple. I would love to set up a time with you (as you said, sooner rather than
later) to have a chat and share the ideas we have developed.
Best,
Matt

I am a SECA at Flying Hills Elementary. I am in need of some information and I have hit a road block. Could you possibly give me some
information on our CSEA union? I have asked the top people in our union and am getting a bit of different information.
My daughter is filling out the Scholarship application our union has offered.
I do not know what our chapter name is. is it CSEA or Cajon Valley Union School District? I looked on the website, and emailed Donna, who
is on vacation.
Would you have any idea?
Thanks so much!

Dear Governing Board. Couple items to update on.
1.
responded
submitted another doctors note w/ a letter from her attorney disagreeing with her placement at Cajon Valley Middle. We
asking for an explanation and are waiting to hear back.
2.
will be leaving us. She accepted a position at the Santee School District in the same role. She will be making about 10,000 a
year more. We ran a salary study w/ the personnel commission to see if her salary could be increased as the range seems very low for the
top confidential position in the district, but the results of the study didn’t justify a change. We will start a search Monday and will plan a time to
recognize/celebrate
’s contribution to CVUSD. She will be missed and also very difficult to replace.
3. We are receiving our chromebook order for Smarter Balanced Testing that we used our one-time Common Core Money to purchase. We
are on schedule to have schools ready for their testing window. Pictures are available on CVUSD Connect. We have our warehouse and
other classified staff working over the weekend to build the carts and prepare the devices.
4. Below are a few emails I received this week commenting on CVUSD Connect. The last email is from a Supt. from Tennessee who
attended my presentation at a Leadership Summit this week. Just sharing some positive feedback.
See you next week,
David

Hi Spencer. Yes. Would really like to have a conversation about our entire arts program. With the change in our school funding model we
have an opportunity to reinvest in the performing arts in an equitable way across the district. Your leadership would be much appreciated. If
there’s a day where we can release you for the second half of the day I’d like to treat lunch and talk about what might be possible as early as
next school year. Please call Lisa to find a day that works with both of us. We will use district business for the substitute teacher. Thank you.
