Jars of Clay
MADE in Kilkenny
Claire Molloy
Sonja designs and produces a wide range of functional and
sculptural stoneware ceramics, ranging from hand thrown
tableware with rich, colourful glazes to highly decorative one-off
pieces. Her sculptural works are architectural, slab-built, vibrant
buildings with character. Sonja runs the pottery workshop at
Camphill Kyle, working with people with special needs and teaches
evening classes for adults and children.
MADE in Kilkenny was formed in early 2009, and was set up to foster excellence in crafts in County
Kilkenny, to encourage the growth of the professional craft industry and to promote the county as a
shopping destination for authentic, handmade craft in Ireland.
Claire Molloy specialises in horsehair and smoke fired ceramics.
She is influenced by the Irish rural environment and likes to create
simple natural looking forms with subtle colours and textures.
Her love of horses directly influences her horsehair pottery. She
uses hair from her horse’s manes and tails to embellish the vessels.
She also uses wood shavings, straw and hay to create her smoke-fired
pots, all materials which are used to care for her horses. Claire also
creates individual pots for horse owners, where each pot is decorated
with hair from a particular horse to create a unique memento.

to this. In this brochure and on our website you will find a guide to various Designer-Makers, and a

metals, the careful chiselling of stone to the meticulous stitching of textiles and leather, all these craftspeople are contributing
to Ireland’s heritage. They are preserving and developing ancient techniques, and presenting you with beautiful pieces to
drink and to eat from, to carry and to store things in, to sit on, to admire, and to adorn the body with!
It is intended that you use this brochure as a shopping guide, for a pleasant day out visiting the various craft shops amongst
Kilkenny’s scenic countryside and historical city. Or, to get that perfect present for yourself or someone else, use the
information and map provided to visit and meet a specific crafts person.
