Golf Run Training Program: Stay Updated Daily! Why Golf Fitness??.... Golf is a game that requires a high level of skill: hand-eye coordination, flexibility, mobility, muscular power, timing, strength, and endurance. During an 18-hole round an average golfer will use around 620 calories, and will swing the club anywhere from 72-100+ times. This means golfers are repeatedly exposing their bodies to high levels of force and load, and moving through a large range of motion. The body must be trained and strengthened to do this safely and prevent injury, as well as to increase club head speed, accuracy, and distance. During this 5 week course we will work on form, flexibility, strength, balance, and cardio. The program will be taught by Julie Mastro, who is a certified personal fitness professional and specializes in Pilates and golf fitness. - The program will run from March 18th to April 17th (two weekly workouts on Wednesday and Friday morning from 6:00 am to 7:00 am). - Sign Up Deadline is March 6th *$10 fee after this date - Program Cost: $135 for members, $165 for non members. - Program includes a class from Jim Halberg (golf pro @ Livingston Golf Course), which will cover swing dynamics and the importance of proper alignment. “Like” us on Facebook March is National Nutrition Month!!! Nutrition is a key factor in maintaining a holistic level of health. The fuel for your workout should take as much care as the workout itself. The content, specific amount, and timing of meals all play an intricate role in sports nutrition. Here are 10 tips for healthy eating 1. Increase intake of local, seasonal, fresh, organic foods. 2. Drink plenty of purified water each day. 3. Minimize caffeine intake to 50 mg or less (1 cup black tea, 3 cups green tea, or 1/2 cup coffee or espresso). 4. Eat protein by 10am and 1-3 more times during the day to help curb sugar cravings. 5. Decrease intake of refined and artificial sugars, white flour products, unnatural fats, added hormones, preservatives, artificial colors, and antibiotics. 6. Diversify sources of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. 7. Eat more monounsaturated fat (olives, avocados, almonds) than saturated fat (animal, dairy, coconuts) or polyunsaturated oils (soy, corn, sunflower). 8. Decrease consumption of gluten-containing grains (wheat, rye, barley) to prevent digestive disturbance and inflammation. 9. Eat 3 portions of vegetables in a meal to 1 serving of protein and 1 serving of fat for pH balance. 10. Enjoy your food and take time to relax to decrease stress. National Athletic Training Month What is an Athletic Trainer? Athletic Trainers (ATs) are health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, as well as therapeutic intervention, rehabilitation of injuries, and medical conditions. Students who want to become certified athletic trainers must earn a degree from an accredited athletic training curriculum. Accredited programs include formal instruction in areas such as injury/illness prevention, first aid and emergency care, assessment of injury/illness, human anatomy and physiology, therapeutic modalities, and nutrition. Classroom learning is enhanced through clinical education experiences. More than 70 percent of certified athletic trainers hold at least a master’s degree. Athletic Trainer vs. Personal Trainer Athletic Training is often confused with personal training. As covered above Athletic Trainers are experts in recognizing, treating, and preventing musculoskeletal injuries. Personal Trainers, on the other hand, develop, monitor, and make changes to an individual’s specific exercise program in a fitness or sports setting. Employers of Athletic Training Services Athletic Trainers work in the following settings: Professional and Collegiate Sports, Secondary and Intermediate Schools, Sports Medicine Clinics, Hospital ER and Rehab Clinics, Occupational Settings, Fitness Centers, and Physician Offices. “Aches and Pains” Athletic Training Program at Firehall Fitness Firehall Fitness is bringing back an athletic training program to provide a more complete array of health services for the community of Livingston. Each month the club will offer “Aches and Pains” where the members can visit with Layne Glaus, Certified Athletic Trainer, and discuss their injuries at no charge to determine if his services would be beneficial to them, or if they may need to seek additional medical expertise. There will be a sign-up sheet posted at the club with availability. The first “Aches and Pains” will begin March 10th @ 1:30 pm (see page 1 of newsletter). For members wishing to utilize full access to Firehall’s athletic trainer, appointments can be booked at the front desk. Appointments are $25 per half hour (only one injury per appointment) Run the Pub Since 2007, Pub 317 has been putting on a one-of-a-kind St. Patrick’s Day 10K and Half Marathon, attracting thousands of runners (and growing by 25%) each year.
