Busy mom Carmen Gonzalez chose our Diamond
Neighborhoods Family Health Center as the Primary
Care Medical Home for her son Aaron (shown here
doing a check up of his own on Dr. Hippen). Like
many San Diegans, Carmen recently lost her job
and is looking for work. Aaron’s dad has steady
work as a mechanic, but his job doesn’t provide health
insurance for the family. Thankfully, Carmen
found our health center so her active preschooler
gets all of the healthcare services he needs!

Family Health Centers of San Diego’s Baby Boutique
Our Baby Boutique provides new and gently used baby items to our
prenatal patients. Patients collect “baby bucks” at their visits,
and then go shopping in the boutique for the essential items they
need. We need your support for this great program! You can help
by donating money or items to the program- every little bit helps!
Direct donations can be made at www.fhcsd.org/donation.cfm.
Simply scroll down to where you see the words Baby Boutique.
To donate items or to start a baby supply collection at your place
of business, contact Barbara Fink at 619-515-2562.

Breast Pump Loan Program
August was National Breast Feeding month and our partners showed
their support in a big way. Thanks to the San Diego Breastfeeding
Coalition and Rest Haven Children’s Fund, Family Health Centers
of San Diego now has a new breast pump loan program! Through the
program, we can loan 10 multi-user electric pumps to new moms.
Breast milk is best for babies, and now we can better support new
breast feeding moms who can not afford to purchase the pumps
on their own.
For more information on our prenatal and postnatal support
programs, please call us at 619-515-2526.

Legacy Giving
A very special gift that will secure your
family’s future is a plan that describes
your intentions for handling property
and responsibilities. Studies show that
more than 75% of the people who can
benefit from estate planning never do
because they procrastinate.
Without a valid will and/or estate plan,
the following are likely to occur:
a.The state will step in and determine
what will happen to your property
and who will be named to care for
your children.
Laura Rodriguez, Family Health Centers of San Diego’s Founder.
Friends of the Family
Will You Be a Friend
of Our Family?
Recently, we sent a request for support to join
our Friends of the Family. We thank our donors
who responded with their generous hearts. It’s
not too late to join Friends of the Family – Family
Health Center of San Diego’s annual giving donor
program. When you join Friends of the Family, it is
a symbol of your annual commitment to help
those who are medically underserved – our
neighbors, our friends, our family - so that they can
continue to receive the much needed quality
healthcare they deserve. To make your contribution
to Friends of the Family, call 619-515-2562 or go
to: www.fhcsd.org/donate.cfm.
Thank you for being a FRIEND!
b.Family members may be required to
pay unnecessary taxes or fees.
c.There will be no provision for the
final gifts to those you’ve supported
over the years.
If you don’t have an estate plan,
now is the time to take care of your
family’s future.
And in case you are considering including
Family Health Centers of San Diego in
your estate plan, here is the language
we suggest:
“I give, devise and bequeath to Family
Health Centers of San Diego the sum
of $_____or ___ % of my estate as an
unrestricted gift to support their mission.”
As you prepare your estate plan, you
will hear and read about words that
are not familiar to you, and below are
definitions that you might find helpful.
Beneficiary: Term used to describe a
person who benefits from a trust, will,
IRA, or other assets.
Estate: All property you own, in any
form, that will someday pass to loved
ones and/or charitable organizations.
Trust: A structure that outlines ownership
and management of your property.
6
Trustee: The individual or entity charged
with managing trust assets on a day-today basis. In most cases, this is you.
Successor Trustee: The individual
or entity charged with taking over
management of trust assets if the
trustee becomes incapacitated or dies.
Will: Instructions to guide distribution
of your property or estate. When used
in tandem with a revocable living trust,
it normally directs the distribution of
personal property.
Executor: Person or entity chosen
to carry out the terms of your will;
sometimes referred to as a “personal
representative.”
Power of Attorney: A legal document
empowering others to take action on
your behalf. Durable Powers of Attorney
are used for the purpose of empowering
others if you become incapacitated.
Advance Health Care Directive: A document that declares your wishes
outlining medical care and life support.
This document is also used to appoint
someone to make medical decisions on
your behalf if you are unable to make
these decisions for yourself.
Please always consult with your
attorney or professional advisor as you
take steps to plan your estate now. For
information on how to include FHCSD in
your estate plan, contact Edith Glassey,
Director of Philanthropy at 619-9064508 or [email protected].
