This month, we visited 100% Design and le feeling inspired by this fantas0c event.
Well done to the winner of the LIA ‘Delight in Light’ compe00on Peter Iveson, a recent
graduate of Dundee. Peter’s design ‘Study Bright‘, oered an alterna0ve, low running cost
solu0on powered by three very bright LEDs that allows students to study for the cost of one
tea candle each evening. If the user needs to move away from their work space then the light
can be simply folded into a torch and carried around for short periods of 0me – what a great
idea!

The 2005 Hazardous Waste Regula0ons state that items which could be damaging to
people or the environment should all be collected separately from other waste. The
guidelines apply to any business that produces, disposes of, carries or receives hazardous
wastes. This includes wastes going to storage, treatment, recycling or disposal. It is oen
the case that larger businesses have plans in place to responsibly and safely recycle their
hazardous ligh0ng waste. However, in spite of this legal requirement, some companies,
par0cularly those with smaller quan00es of waste lamps, some0mes out this law.
Incorrect handling and disposal of waste lamps, apart from being illegal, can expose
employees to hazardous waste like mercury. The risk is such that if convicted of not
complying with the regula0ons, employers could face a ne of up to £5,000 and/or two
years in prison.
In recent years it has become much easier for businesses to recycle their waste lamps,
thanks to Recolight, the leading WEEE compliance scheme for the ligh0ng industry, which
now has 2,433 commercial collec0on points. The largest UK-wide collec0on point network
provides members and their customers with access to free recycling. There is now also a
postcode-searching func0on on the scheme’s website which enables users to nd their
nearest collec0on point which is never more than twenty miles away and therefore allows for easy access to suitable
recycling facili0es for all ligh0ng waste.

n any sector lighting controls can enhance
the efficiency of lighting and save money.
Lighting controls can be used to dim,
position or even switch off unnecessary or
unused lighting.
Recent advances in technology has meant
lighting controls are getting more
sophisticated and managing lighting is
becoming simpler and more effective.
Alec Fielding, Key Account Manager at
Tridonic gives an overview of lighting controls
“A lighting control system is an intelligent
lighting solution that can incorporate many
different input and output systems that relate
to lighting control when using one multiple
central computing devices.
Lighting controls are used in both indoor
and outdoor applications for domestic,
industrial, retail, commercial and health care.
The purpose of lighting control is to ensure
that the right amount of light is delivered
from the luminaire in the right place at the
right time.
Lighting control systems are installed to
maximise energy savings from the lighting
system. Different percentages of energy
savings can be made when using different
control methods which are more commonly
referred to as smart lighting installations.”
Many sectors are under pressure to reduce
energy costs and lighting control offers an
easy way to manage usage and costs.
DANLERS have recently designed an
innovative new product called the
ControlZAPP, a ground-breaking link between
stand-alone control and managed systems. It
features a Bluetooth ‘smart’ communication
and can be used to simply remote set-up,
adjust or override settings. The free
ControlZAPP APP can be downloaded from
the DANLERS website and used to implement
occupancy detection, time lags or daylight
response on a ControlZAPP enabled product.
This is a unique combination of stand-alone
energy saving control plus real time
scheduling and can potentially increase
energy savings and improves end user
comfort. It is ideal for retrofitting and for both
large and small installations including a range
of sectors such as offices, warehouses, retail
units, hospitals, hotels, schools and social
housing.
The Wise Controls Fusion dimmer from Mr
Resistor is a deceptively simple piece of
equipment. It is available in a single and
double dimmer version and can be retro fitted
to replace existing dimmers. It has a soft fade
on and off, creating a smooth transition to
different light levels.
The hidden functionality within the fusion
dimmer is what sets it apart from other
equipment on the market. Built into the
dimmer is a radio receiver, allowing it to be
linked with all WISE CONTROLS transmitter
units. This means that wireless switches and
sensors can be connected to the dimmer,
allowing multiway dimming and daylight

control without any additional wiring.
Scene setting and master control
functionality is also included in the dimmer
which allows the creation of occupancy and
vacancy functions with daylight dimming
adjustment and a master off control.
Within the workplace and offices lighting
controls can offer a great deal of flexibility and
in turn save money. Stockrooms, bathrooms,
hallways and lobbies that are used
infrequently can be fitted with sensors to
detect movement eliminating the need to
switch off lighting when unoccupied. Lighting
within a workplace is particularly important as
it can improve staff productivity and morale.
Natural lighting is the best light to work in,
reducing eye strain and stress levels. Day light
harvesting sensors can be used to dim lighting
or even switch it off in areas of high natural
lighting. For cloudy and dull days the artificial
lighting can be increased by the sensor to
create the perfect ambiance.
Ex-Or’s new range of PIR sensors, LightSpot
HD, uses innovative new features to make light
work for energy efficiency, comfort,
productivity and ease of use. LightSpot HD
sensors provide class leading sensitivity with
macro and micro detection; ensuring lights
deliver optimal luminance when required and

Controls
switch off when necessary. With spring clip and
locking ring fixing options, the sensors are fitted
with pluggable, colour coded connectors,
making the installation process easy.
Additionally, they provide flexibility through the
inclusion of QuickLink, a unique solution
allowing installers to create a simple network of
up to four sensors.
Another sector that benefits from the
advances of lighting controls is emergency
lighting. In the past companies may have had to
switch off the lighting to check each and every
emergency lighting sign is working, which is a
“Flexibility is a key factor
when installing lighting for
hospitality as often room

short turn-around times.”
drain on a company’s resources. Simon
McCune, Strategic Development Manager at
Mackwell comments “The use of a visual
indicator such as an LED is the simplest way to
check Emergency Lighting is activated, but they
still require someone to visually check the
indicators on each individual fitting.
More sophisticated systems centralise the
monitoring and testing of emergency lighting,
either without a permanent connection to a
computer for relatively small stand-alone sites,
or with a permanent software interface for
larger buildings or for monitoring multiple sites.
When specifying such systems it is important
to choose the right control protocol and we
would recommend using the DALI protocol,
rather than a proprietary system, as DALI is also
the protocol most commonly used with general
lighting schemes.”
More and more hotels are utilising lighting
controls in their guest rooms and bathrooms
along with use in the communal areas.
Hamilton’s Mercury® lighting control system is a
popular choice within hotels. The systems,
which are now industry standard fit outs include
programmable multi-scene lighting control for
restaurant/bar and public areas that require
changing ambient mood lighting and PIR
(motion sensors). Partition switching is another
popular choice, widely used within multi-layout
conference/seminar function room areas.
Flexibility is a key factor when installing
lighting for hospitality as often room changes
are needed in very short turn-around times.
Remote Controlled Lighting (RCL) offer a
patented ‘Select and Direct’ wireless control
system that allows users to position, dim or even
select a scene all with the touch of a button.
Using a simple handheld remote control,
individual lights can be selected and aimed from
floor level. Pan and tilt movement, along with
the intensity of each light, can be adjusted
intuitively, ensuring the best possible lighting
every time.
The technology allows non-technical staff to
position the light beam exactly where they
want, even in spaces with high ceilings – RCL
spotlights are designed to accommodate a
variety of light sources including the company’s
new, high-powered LED head. This type of
lighting control can enhance a room’s ambiance
and create a setting that is correct for the event.
Many private residences are now reaping the
benefits of lighting controls and are specifying
them at the design stage. Lutron recently
worked on a home being built in Richmond. A
key element of the brief was that the technology
had to be cleverly incorporated and be intuitive
yet versatile and able to support the needs of
the whole family.

The owners of the home worked with smart
home consultants, Inspired Dwellings, PBA
Architects and John Cullen Lighting.
“From the multi-media, lighting, security and
irrigation systems, to HVAC and insect control,
the owner wanted all the technologies to be
integrated into a centralised, intuitive, futureproof solution that supported the strong designethos of the home,” comments Rob Sutherland,
MD at Inspired Dwellings. “By having
involvement in the project from the very early
stages of the build, we were able to take all of
the family’s requirements into account and
incorporate them into a cohesive solution that
uses the best in technology, from companies
such as Lutron, to deliver stunning results.”
Using Lutron’s HomeWorks® QS residential
light control system, Inspired Dwellings
“Our technology needed to
seamlessly integrate, not
only with itself, but with the
home’s design, becoming an
intuitive part of family life.”
integrated the home’s interior and exterior
lighting, window treatments and two, custommade treehouses using 310 circuits, 63 Lutron
International seeTouch® keypads and Lutron’s
Sivoia® QS shading solutions.
Project Manager at Inspired Dwellings, Casey
Barrett, explains further: “The owners of this
property had a keen eye for fashion and a
strong idea of the end project. Our technology
needed to seamlessly integrate, not only with
itself, but with the home’s design, becoming an
intuitive part of family life. Lutron’s HomeWorks
QS solution helped us achieve this. We were
able to offer simple user interfaces, such as
‘Welcome’ and ‘Goodbye’ buttons on the
keypads – enabling lighting and heating to be
turned on to pre-agreed levels, or dropped to
the eco-friendly mode – as well as use the
system as a bridge between the Control4 system
and other important features in the home.”
Two homework AS processors were installed
in panels in the basement and upper floor along
with a range of Lutron dimming modules, DALI
interfaces, third party input and output contact
closures relays incorporated into these, and an
additional panel, on the ground floor. Casey
18
Barrett comments: “The end result is not only
traditional lighting mood scene creation and
control of all the window treatments, but
thanks to HomeWorks QS’s ability to integrate
DMX, DALI, P-10, mains dimming, switched
loads and contact closures, the home’s
Maglocks, indoor and outdoor water features
and even insect repellent have been integrated
into the scheme!”
Thanks to the skill of Inspired Dwellings and
powerful integration technology of Lutron’s
HomeWorks light control solution, the owners
have a versatile system that can be adapted to
the changing needs of the family for many
years to come. A1

We look at a range of

private residences all creang serene

Collingwood Lighng
Old House Private Residence
Surrey, UK
W
hen Ma" Kelsing from Surreybased Lime Electrics won the
contract to install external
ligh0ng at the 18th century ‘Old House’
he looked to Collingwood Ligh0ng to
supply the products needed.
Old House is situated in the ancient
village of Crondall which is located within
a conserva0on area. This created a
challenge as the products used needed to
be sympathe0c to the heritage of the
area, whilst also appropriate for use
within the 21st century.
Old House is a Grade II listed building and
retains much of its classical period
features with a mix of formal and informal
gardens. The external ligh0ng needed to
be both func0onal and aesthe0cally
pleasing.
Ma" Kelsing comments: “Once we had
the design plan in place it was essen0al
we were able to supply products that not
only fullled the specica0on but also
exceeded them. This is where
Collingwood came in”
He con0nued, “We knew we had to
ensure total consistency in light output,
longevity and most importantly, ease of
installa0on and Collingwood 0cked all the
boxes. To start with, the owners wanted
32
clearly lit pathways but without obtrusive
ligh0ng columns”
Collingwood’s Iroko bollard lights "ed the
bill perfectly. At just 1m high, the three
wide angle high powered 1W LEDs throw
out a bright 110° pool of low level light
and being ‘straight to mains’ are easy to
install.
Another considera0on set in the brief was
to create maximum tranquillity. Due to the
loca0on of the property, only 35 miles
from London, the owners wanted a
peaceful and relaxing space. A number of
Collingwood LED ground and wall lights
were used to highlight the many a"rac0ve
exterior features. These included the
GL038A ground light and GL034A hooded
wall/ground lights – all direct to mains and
all manufactured with a stainless steel
fascia for easy maintenance and longevity.
Collingwoods Linear FL200 LED ood lights
were used, with a beam angle of 50° and 9
high-powered LEDs, they throw light over
large distances, which makes them ideal
for ligh0ng trees. The FL200 also has an
anodised aluminium body and waterproof
mains connector making it weatherproof

Lutron
Primrose Co
age
Surrey, UK
The owners of this Grade II listed co*age
wanted their home to be bought into
the 21st century with the introduc5on
of Lutron’s HomeWorks QS whole-home
light control system.
This seven bedroom, 5mber-framed
co*age has wa*le and daub walls and
oorboards laid straight on to soil,
so a conven5onal ligh5ng system was
not an op5on.
Lutron’s HomeWorks QS system uses
wireless Clear Connect™ Radio Frequency
(RF) technology which enables all of the
interior and exterior light sources to be
controlled, along with keypads, blinds
and occupancy sensors. This has all been
done with no disturbance to the fabric
of the building.
Max von Barnholt, Design Director of VBK
Ligh5ng Consultants Ltd who oversaw the
installa5on of the light control solu5on,
explains further: “Our brief was to
eliminate all of the surface cabling from
the exis5ng wired-in ligh5ng system,
reduce the number of light switches
throughout the property and oce barn
conversion, automate all of the interior
and exterior ligh5ng for ul5mate energy
savings and scene control as well as
enable the whole-home to be operated
remotely, or on-site via Apple® iPad™
and iPhone™ apps.
“As with any Grade II listed building, any
changes or addi5ons have to be benecial,
not detrimental to the architecture.
When we saw the RF poten5al of Lutron’s
HomeWorks QS solu5on, we knew that it
would be possible to introduce full home
light and blind control into this unique
property, with minimal disrup5on to the
interior decora5on of the co*age and
no disturbance to the fabric of the
building itself.”
The property is 16th century and originally
built as one large house. It was then split
into two co*ages and now has been
rejoined with four staircases and a barn
conversion, serving as an oce. To link the
areas of property with minimum wiring,
VBK Ligh5ng chose to use two of Lutron’s
HomeWorks QS processors, one on the
ground oor and one on the second.
The processors were linked wirelessly on
the home network and with the use of
wireless access points there was no
damage to the walls or need for Cat5
cabling runs.
Eleven Lutron GRAFIK Eye QS wireless
keypads were then connected throughout
the co*age and barn, crea5ng eleven
dierent control points from which to
wirelessly manage the 66 circuits.
In addi5on, a range of Lutron’s SeeTouch
and SeeTouch Interna5onal wired keypads
and Lutron's wireless Pico remote controls
were used throughout, to enable a wide
range of pre-programmed scenes to be
accessed. By using mul5ple HomeWorks QS
processors, wireless repeaters and wireless
keypads where necessary, the wiring
within the co*age and barn were kept
to a minimum.
To minimise the number of switches
throughout, mul5ple func5ons were
consolidated into the SeeTouch and
Pico Remote Control keypads. Wireless
occupancy sensors were placed in
bathroom and larders to switch o lights
when not in use. The homeowner can
access the system when away by logging
into a monitor hardwired to the processor.
On-site access was also made possible
through Lutron's Home Control+ iPad™
and iPhone™ app.
The owners of the property were also able
to stay in the co*age whilst the ligh5ng
installa5on was being carried out.

walls, high ceilings and pocket doors.
It has a grand curved staircase which leads
to the upper level and a self-contained
annex.
Set in a much sought-aer area where
proper)es are valued between £3m
and £5m.
The brief was to install a ligh)ng control
solu)on that would e
ec)vely control a
mul) room LED-based installa)on. Flexibility
was key with the ability to tailor the ligh)ng
in individual rooms essen)al and the look
of the system needed to compliment the
fabulous "nish of the project.
Hamilton worked alongside the developer
to create a bespoke system based upon
their Mercury Ligh)ng Control system.
This system enables the user to create an
incredible variety of ligh)ng scenarios,
from dimming to whole scene seng,
which can be stored and reused with ease.
A master control hub and wall-mounted
control plates were installed. The control
plates were available as both Capaci)ve

the property and "nished in a polished
chrome to match the minimalis)c design

leaving or arriving at the property the
homeowner can simply operate all presets
at the touch of one bu!on.

integrated into the system.
The homeowner has a system which can
be controlled by the push of a bu!on, or
the swipe of the "nger, giving them full

Dbn Lights ‘Sound To Sea’ for Crypc.
L
ighng and rigging specialists dbn were
asked by Glasgowbased arts organisaon
Crypc to collaborate on creang ‘Sound To
Sea’, a very special nightme naucal
extravaganza presented in partnership with
Glasgow Science Centre, and in associaon
with Walk The Plank, All Or Nothing and The
Royal Navy. It was staged at the Canng Basin
on the River Clyde in Glasgow.
This vibrant and ambious sitespecific work,
directed by Cathie Boyd, celebrated Crypc’s
20th anniversary and was part of the arts
programme accompanying the 2014 XX
Commonwealth Games in the city, which
culminated the same weekend.
Dbn’s Stephen Page was commissioned to
design and develop a lighng scheme for the
show, due to the company’s extensive
experience working on dynamic outdoor mul
faceted performances like this.
The performance encompassed several live
arsts and bands, aerialists, pyro effects,
around 140 performers and no less than
fourteen ships which were part of a magical
kinec set, some moving around the dock
during the performance.
The scale of the site was huge – from the top
of the Science Centre roof, where the aerialists
performed, to the boats manoeuvring in the
dock, reaching right along to Glasgow Tower at
36
the end of the Science Centre, which became a
striking endstop to the acon, with carefully
choreographed pyro sequences fired in and
around it.
It was the expansive and varied nature of
this temporary theatre environment that was
the biggest challenge for Page when lighng
the show. The soluon was to posion lights in
just about every conceivable posion around
the space!
At the top and boom of the Science Centre
roof were eight strategically deployed SGM P5s,
16 in total, with two Studio Due City Color LEDs
also shoong up from the floor either side.
Either side, and to the front of the building
were four Clay Paky Alpha Wash 700s and level
with the middle of the audience posions, in
front of the roof and to the sides, were two
Alpha Wash QWO 800s each side.
The large dock basin and hub of the
performance was directly in front of the
Science Centre which had 16 Alpha Beam 700s
posioned around its perimeter, used for
creang an eyecatching backdrop to the boats
and performers. They also doubled up as
reinforcement for illuminang the Science
Centre roof.
The shape and makeup of the Science Centre
roof was another galvanizing element with its
disncve taniumclad crescent shaped
www.a1lighngmagazine.com
Sound To Sea
structure acng as a backdrop to the event, so
throwing sufficient light up there without it
being reflected up into the night sky was
extremely tricky.
Around the FOH posion were another
eight P5s shoong into the basin together
with another two QWO 800s, four CP Sharpie
Washes, four Marn Atomic strobes and two
Robert Juliat Victor followspots.
The Glasgow Tower was lit with six Sharpie
Beams and four Sharpie Washes. Page
operated all the shorebased lighng from his
trusty Jands Vista T2 console. Six vessels had
lighng systems installed on them, to support
performers playing on deck.
Glasgow electro ouit, Miaoux Miaoux, and
Model Aeroplanes from Dundee were special
guests aboard auxiliary support vessel ‘SD
Omagh,’ and they were lit from behind with
Clay Paky A.leda K10 BEye wash lights and a
grid of Chauvet Nexus 4x4 panels, all operated
locally via a Jands S3 console.
The Treacherous Orchestra made waves
aboard Royal Navy minesweeper, HMS
Bangor, with their set being lit with a variety
of kit including six Sharpies rigged on a
scaffolding goalpost creang a high impact fan
effect, Showtec Sunstrips upstage for eye
candy and Showtec Spectral Zoom LED PARs
for general washing, controlled with another
Jands Vista S3.
Dbn’s intrepid Nick Buckley literally had to
‘jump ship’ via the dockside to be in place in
me to operate lighng on both boats!
Further kit was installed on the four other
boats that were acve in the show – the
‘Orcuan’, a 9 metre long Birlinn fishing vessel;
38
the 33 long Baldie ‘White Wing’ popular for
fishing on the East Coast of Scotland; the ‘Wee
Spark’ a third scale Clyde ‘puffer’ and the
‘Maybe’, an elegant tradional Dutch sailing
Ketch launched in 1933 and built for round
theworld cruising.
The onboard lighng kit included a single
CP GlowUp baerypowered wireless LED up
lighter rigged on the ‘Orcuan’ to a slightly
more sophiscated set up on the ‘White Wing’
comprising 30 metres of LED tape and two
GlowUps, controlled locally by an ETC
SmartFade 1224.
The ‘Wee Spark’ was fired up with four iPix
BB4 LED baens and two GlowUps controlled
via wireless link to the FOH console on the
shore, and the ‘Maybe’ was graced with 600
metres of Warm White fairy lights in her
rigging, which provided a fantasc backdrop to
an addional solo aerial dancer.
Page recalls that aer geng sufficient
illuminaon up to the top of the Science
Centre, rigging these fairy lights was definitely
the next most challenging lighng detail of the
project to get right!
Also on the ‘Maybe’ were three CP A.leda
K10 BEyes and six Spectral Zoom 2500 LED
pars, all controlled by an ultracompact Jands
Vista M1.
Glasgow beatboxer Bigg Taj freestyled
aboard the ‘Wee Spark,’ folk singer Rachel
Sermanni sang from the prow of the ‘White
Wing,’ and soprano Marie Claire Breen, in full
voice, was rowed into the performance space
aboard the ‘Orcuan’ accompanied by the
Glasgow Phoenix Choir singing from the dock
side.
Page and Buckley were joined by three
other dbn crew – Moss Everhard, Col
Emmerson and Steve Barnet, and they were
assisted by rigger Pete Isherwood on the first
day, and on the derig by Lucas Athienetes.
Page sums up, “It was a really exhilarang
project to be involved in, brought to fruion
by a lot of hard work and some touches of
pure ingenuity to overcome many challenges
and idiosyncrac scenarios – which is what we
like. There was a great team spirit and vibe
between everyone working on site, the shows
were both fully aended (by around 4,000
people) and it was a great success”. A1

Eyes On...
Eyes On...
Incorporated over 20 years ago, we nd out more about the
energy saving controls specialist DANLERS Limited.
1. Where and when did the DANLERS
story begin?
DANLERS Limited was incorporated in 1990
by current chairman, Tony Kay, with
members of his immediate family including
current Managing Director Julian Kay.
Tony, a graduate of Manchester University,
an innova5ve, forward thinking engineer and
entrepreneur, saw market opportuni5es in
the ligh5ng and hea5ng, ven5la5on and air
condi5oning industries with dimming and
energy saving controls with his rst
company, Home Automa5on, based in
Herordshire, which was subsequently sold
(eventually to become part of Eaton MEM).
DANLERS Limited started trading in 1991
from the ac in Tony Kay’s home in
Wiltshire, designing and manufacturing an
ini5al range of ligh5ng controls aimed at
the energy saving, security and
convenience markets.
Having outgrown the Kay family home,
DANLERS Limited moved to The Tyak Centre
in Chippenham in 2000, ini5ally ren5ng part
of the site then purchasing the en5re site in
2008 and renaming it to the DANLERS
Business Centre, resul5ng in expansion and
modernisa5on of the factory, storage
facili5es, oces and engineering labs plus
investment in a state of the art surfacemount electronics produc5on line.
The DANLERS philosophy has always been
to produce high quality, innova5ve products
that are easy to install and commission.
This resolve along with a commitment
to manufacturing their controls in the UK
resulted in being awarded the pres5gious
Queen’s Award for Enterprise Innova5on
in 2010.
2010 also marked the launch of a new
arm of the business, DANLERS Contract
Electronics Manufacturing (CEM), oering
electronic assembly for other manufacturing
companies.
2. How have your controls changed over
the years?
The ethos behind most controls in the
DANLERS range has not changed much over
the years – simply saving energy by switching
o (or dimming) ligh5ng or other connected
loads when not required. The ligh5ng
controls market was, when DANLERS started,
a rela5vely small market which has grown
into a global necessity.
Ironically it has been suggested that the
biggest threat to control manufacturers is
when EVERYONE is empowered and
mo5vated to take control and switch the
ligh5ng OFF when not required, be that in a
working, leisure or domes5c environment.
Unfortunately that does not always happen
unless you are the individual responsible for
paying the energy bill. Sharp rises in the cost
44

Business Centre in 2010
of electricity focuses the mind of those who
write the cheques, balance the books or
expect a beer return on investment.
However, for many, especially in the working
environment, it is not necessarily the
employee’s concern unless they are sensi;ve
to environmental issues and so the ligh;ng
control industry con;nues to grow and the
need for beer, more ecient and more
#exible controls is in even greater demand.
Not only increased energy costs but also
legisla;on, ecological concerns and
interna;onal commitments to reduce CO2
emissions has increased market size and the
number of compe;tors compe;ng in those
markets with many global corpora;ons taking
an interest. DANLERS have had to maintain
both an innova;ve and compe;;ve edge
without compromising quality or a
commitment to excellent customer service.
As such, the DANLERS range of products is
constantly evolving, improving and expanding
to suit new technologies such as the digital
and LED revolu;ons.
Energy eciency through managed control
of ligh;ng has become increasingly more
sophis;cated in recent years. Managed
systems have introduced many exci;ng
criteria into the world of ligh;ng and HVAC
control – AT A COST. To help customers
achieve the goal of even greater energy, cost
savings, rapid payback AND enhanced end
user convenience and #exibility, DANLERS
have recently launched the innova;ve
ControlZAPP range as the cost eec;ve link
between sophis;cated but expensive systems
and reliable and low cost but less #exible
stand alone controls of which DANLERS
controls are so are well known and
highly respected.
The combina;on of the freely available
ControlZAPP app and ControlZAPP enabled
controls enables you to create personal,
#exible switching sengs (modes) which
you can place into a schedule (a calendar
of ;mes and dates) of when/how you wish
these modes to occur. Because ControlZAPP
devices have an internal ;me clock they can
be accurately programmed in real ;me to
change their func;on at dierent ;mes of
day, or on dierent days of the week or
even holidays. Once you have con"gured
the app you can upload the sengs to your
ControlZAPP hardware for controlling
ligh;ng or other connected loads. Most
features contained on the ControlZAPP
applica;on soware may be con"gured OFF
SITE prior to installa;on of the ControlZAPP
hardware can only be completed when
soware, via the ControlZAPP applica;on,
and hardware are connected ON SITE by
Bluetooth Low Energy (Bluetooth Smart).
The pairing of stand alone energy saving
control and a real ;me scheduling
poten;ally increases energy saving AND
improves end user comfort at a low cost
which signi"cantly improves payback
periods for the end user.
3. We can see from your website that you
have an energy saving range – what is your
most popular product in the range?
DANLERS Ceiling mounted PIR occupancy
switch (CEFL PIR) has for many years been
the biggest selling product. Its energy saving
poten;al (up to 80% in some installa;ons),
rapid payback (average 18 months in a

commercial environment), slim unobtrusive
looks, ease of installa;on and 5-year warranty
make it very popular with many contractors,
speci"ers and end users alike.
4. What has been your biggest challenge to
date and how did you overcome it?
Challenges are an everyday occurrence which
the talented and enthusias;c DANLERS team,
be that produc;on, engineering, dispatch,
sales, marke;ng or senior management,
always rise to. Chairman Tony Kay always
leads by example and despite cung back a
lile, having reached his 79th year, is s;ll at
his work desk 5 days a week.
5. What can we expect in the future
from DANLERS?
ControlZAPP marks the beginning of a new
phase for DANLERS Limited. Without wishing
to show our cards to the world where a good
idea can be swept up by the commercially
eager and less innova;ve, I can assure you
that the DANLERS team are working on a
number of very exci;ng projects that will
hopefully expand our UK and export markets
in 2015 and beyond. A1

Architainment Lighting
supply LEDs for the
Camden Roundhouse.
The Roundhouse in Camden recently called
upon Atmos to design an excing project that
combines light and music. Atmos is a
muldisciplinary pracce creang innovave
works of art, architecture and design,
spanning scales and media. They design
buildings and objects, installaons and
landscapes conjuring meaningful,
pleasurable, and enduring experiences.
Much of their work involves cung edge
design and fabricaon technologies, complex
structures and digital mapping, exploring the
connecvity of people to their precise place
in the world.
Arboreal Lightning is a mammoth
interacve installaon that transforms sound
and movement into an immersive luminous
environment.
Commissioned by both the Roundhouse
venue and Grammy AwardWinning singer
songwriter Imogen Heap, this project is the
centrepiece for the Camden Roundhouse’s
Reverb 2014 Fesval of Contemporary
Classical Music.
The installaon mirrors the Roundhouse's
clocklike plan of 24 columns by bundling 24
strands of LED light into a giant heavyrooted
trunk that grows from the stage to arc over
48
the colonnade and arches above. The strands
soar upwards and weave through columns and
raers to follow the building's dramac
structure, seeking hidden recesses and
unexplored corners, before exploding outwards
above both the performers and audience.
Some branches yearn upwards, towards the
light of the lantern and a few strands bow
down to reach and mingle with the audience.
1,500 metres of LED string have been
meculously tamed to shadow the contours of
the building's giant skeleton – yet each of the
4,800 pixel nodes glimmer individually in
response to life. They coalesce to form a
sinuous elasc mesh of sculptural video – a
fluid, spaal cinema, worming through the
building.
Architainment Lighng was called upon by
Atmos Studio to supply a flexible, adaptable
and lightweight soluon; iColor Flex MX gen2
by Philips Color Kinecs was the obvious
choice. The strands boast flexible threads of
high intensity, full colour LED nodes specifically
designed for extraordinary effects and
expansive installaons without the constraints
of fixture size, shape or space. Each iColor Flex
MX gen2 strand consists of 50 individually
addressable LED nodes, featuring dynamic
integraon of power, communicaon and
control. The flexible form factor accommodates
two and threedimensional configuraons,
while high light output affords superior long
distance viewing for video displays.
Architainment supplied a total of 96 lengths
with 12” spacing and an sPDS480ca 7.5V
Philips Color Kinecs power and data supply.
The sPDS480ca 7.5V delivers 480 was of
output via 16 30wa ports and automacally
accommodates input voltages ranging from
100 VAC to 240 VAC.
Atmos Studio Director, Alex Haw, comments
on the project: “It was a true pleasure working
with a team as knowledgeable and
professional as Architainment. They worked
really hard on our behalf and were crucial to
making the whole project happen; I can't wait
to work with them again.”
Arboreal Lightning unleashes the hidden
power of a place – and people. It explores
inaccessible spaces and ineffable sensaons –
the physical manifestaon of music, and the
convergence of sensaons. In an age of
emancipated connecvity and collaboraon, it
seeks to reinvent and reimagine the
relaonship between performer and
audience, sound and light. A1

LEDS AND NATURAL LIGHT BLEND IN CONTEMPORARY ECO-HOUSE..

ocated in the grounds of a tradi4onal
nineteenth century oast house in Kent is
where you will ,nd the private residence
designed by Nash Baker Architects, recently
shortlisted for the 2014 Na4onal Wood
Awards. The owners wanted an accessible
and sustainable contemporary home for
their re4rement.
The house has been speci, cally designed
to the Code for Sustainable Homes and with
locally sourced 4mber.
Low energy ligh4ng from Precision Ligh4ng’s
Discus LED ,xtures were used to compliment
the natural light in this eco-home.
Tad Trylski, the ligh4ng design consultant,
speci,ed Discus LED ,xtures as well as
Precision Ligh4ng’s propriety ligh4ng track
system, Retrac. Both are white, to blend
seamlessly into the surrounding architecture
allowing the ar4,cial ligh4ng to appear natural;
adding to the sense of spaciousness and
freedom within the rooms.
The o-white walls help to balance the use
of the 4mber, and it also provides a suitable
backdrop for the Bri4sh-Danish couple’s
eclec4c art and furniture. The minimal lines of
the recessed Retrac system also reect the
simple lines present in the surrounding
architecture. The Douglas ,r ooring and the
exposed ceilings are treated with lime to
lighten their ,nishes and prevent the wood
from yellowing over 4me.
‘All spaces and views to and from the
property have been channelled for maximum
light and privacy, responding to natural sun
paerns as well as the clients’ brief to create
quieter sanctuaries away from the social areas
of the house,’ says Nash Baker.
‘The Precision Ligh4ng ,$ngs were used to
highlight speci,c surfaces and objects,
including the worktops and artworks,’ says
architect Simon Baker. ‘The building is
constructed from cross laminated 4mber with
no roof voids in which to insert light ,$ngs, so
we looked at track systems that would give us a
clean-appearing ceiling and the exibility to
move ,$ngs. In areas, we also had to project
light over quite long distances because of the
tall ceilings. We used Precision Ligh4ng
because of their range of aesthe4cally simple
and small ,$ngs, which met our performance
criteria. The company itself was a pleasure
to work with because of their willingness to
help on what was a rela4vely small
domes4c project.’
Precision Ligh4ng oers a choice of track
ligh4ng systems. Retrac is a low voltage system.
Rated at 300W and designed to be recessed
into walls or ceilings, providing an extremely
versa4le system for general or display ligh4ng.
It can be installed with the track ush to a
ceiling and with the rest of the ligh4ng slo$ng
into place aer the decora4on is complete, or
surface mounted. An op4onal cover strip can
also be painted to match the decor.
Discus is machined from aerospace-grade AL
6063-T6 aluminium, which ensures far more
ecient thermal proper4es than a cast
product. This allows Discus to deliver a lumen
package of 280-470lm from an incredibly
compact luminaire. The high thermal
conduc4vity of this grade of aluminium
enables Precision Ligh4ng's luminaires to be
some of the smallest on the market, while
safely running the LEDs well below their
recommended maximum temperature.
Precision Ligh4ng's Jack Plug system enables
the luminaire to be easily disconnected
and reconnected to all of Precision
Ligh4ng's systems. A1

Fineline
The Eden Project
Cornwall, UK
3
Fineline Enjoys Eden Sessions.
T
he Eden Project in Cornwall, UK was the
magical seng for a diverse series of
music performances. Over a "ve week
period a star-studded line up of ar>sts
performed, Skrillex, Dizzee Rascal, Katy B, Ellie
Goulding, Elbow and The Pixies, to name just a
few.
Fineline, the Bristol based ligh>ng and visual
rental specialists, supplied the ligh>ng, LED
screen, rigging and crew.
Rob Sangwell from Fineline explained that
they designed a highly exible and prac>cal
‘house’ ligh>ng rig, so that all the touring
bands could come in ‘underneath’ with their
respec>ve touring packages. Ligh>ng for each
gig – although based around the "xtures
available in the house rig – also emulated the
ar>st’s touring ligh>ng schemes as far as
possible.
The stage at Eden is beneath an elegant,
dis>nc>ve crescent shaped tensile roof, so all
rigging had to be integrated with this. A hybrid
design evolved to facilitate the 17 metre wide
by 14 metre deep super-truss mother grid that
is part ground-supported and part-own, this
provided all the required ligh>ng and video
rigging posi>ons.
“It took a bit of working out ini>ally,”
explains Sangwell, “But now the concept exists
it is proving an ideal and very adaptable
solu>on”.
Once the mother grid was in place, they
sub-hung their three 15 metre ligh>ng and one
15 metre wide video trusses below, plus a
drapes truss at the back, with allowances
made for accommoda>ng addi>onal ar>st
‘specials’.
The house rig ligh>ng comprised of 18 x
Robe 600E Spots, 18 x Robe LEDWash 600s and
12 x Robe Pointe mul>-purpose luminaires,
together with a healthy splaering of 2, 4 and
8-lite blinders, 16 x Mar>n Atomic strobes and
16 x ETC Source Four Pro"les at the front for
essen>al key ligh>ng.
They also had around 72 PAR cans on the rig
for general washes and stage cover, as well as
for support acts, etc.
The house control was Avolites dimming and
ChamSys SnakeSys R8 ArtNet nodes and Avo
52
DMX buers for data, with an Avo Tiger Touch
as the house desk. All the visi>ng LDs brought
in their own grandMA2 consoles, all of which
were integrated into the ArtNet control
network.
Fineline supplied 48 panels of Lighthouse R7
LED screen for video, and this was recon"gured
for dierent acts, with the ‘standard’ house
con"gura>on being one 16:9 upstage block of
screen.
For Elbow – designed by Cate Carter – they
needed more screen, so 44 square metres was
installed for this show, set up as a 14.5 metres
wide and 3 metres high surface at the back to
dovetailed with their touring video package.
They hooked the LED screen into the touring
media servers / control systems in each case
again integrated via Fineline’s ArtNet data
system. This aspect of the project and all
associated geekery was co-ordinated for
Fineline by Stuart England.
Cate Carter also created the ligh>ng and
visual design for Ellie Goulding, which was out
with Robin Haddow as Ligh>ng Director. Says
Sangwell, “We all enjoyed working with Cate
again, who we’ve known for some >me as she
comes from the area. She’s always been a
talented designer and it’s great to see her
career rocke>ng to where it is now … especially
with her local connec>ons”.
Fineline’s other crew were Wingnut, Tim
Williams and Sam Kenyon all on ligh>ng,
Mar>n Jacobs looking aer the video and
riggers Steve Armstrong, Peran Odgers and
Ruben Pinkney.
“It was fabulous to be part of the TAO
Produc>ons team again and working on an
event that’s a bit dierent from a standard
music fes>val. Everything was well organised
and based on high produc>on values which is
always good. We were lucky with the weather,
Eden is a genuinely amazing place to work …
and we all love it” concludes Sangwell. A1

A
dlib are a company based in Liverpool
who provide technical solu>ons,
system design and infrastructure as
well as audio, ligh>ng, AV and equipment,
and have recently supplied all of this for the
2014 Interna>onal Fes>val for business (IFB)
They won two tenders which were issued
by Liverpool Vision, and worked closely with
Evoke the crea>ve design specialists who
planned the various environments and event
mee>ng spaces that were u>lised throughout
the Fes>val.
£250,000 was invested by Adlib in new
equipment to enable the provision of a world
class set up for the high pro,le event.
The second of the tenders related to
supplying technical services and equipment
for around 150 main events within the
Fes>val which focussed on crea>ng new
interna>onal and domes>c business-tobusiness rela>onships and commercial
openings for UK companies of all sizes
and sectors.
The IFB ran for 50 days through June and
July and was the ,rst of a new concept as
well as the largest global concentra>on of
business events. It aracted business
delegates and trade intermediaries from
worldwide to one of the UK’s most exci>ng
and hospitable ci>es.
This massive project was managed for
Adlib by Director Mark Roberts who
commented, “IFB was the largest business
event in which we’ve been involved to date,
and something that is completely unique.
We are exceedingly proud that Liverpool
was chosen as a host city and also to have
the chance to rise to the many challenges
and provide an unparalleled service to the
required standards of excellence”.
56
The Hub was designed as the mul>purpose high tech aorta for all IFB ac>vi>es
which had break-out conference, mee>ng
and seminar spaces over three +oors.
The ground +oor included a bespoke stage
style recep>on/registra>on area, an
interac>ve pentagon shaped pod (,ed with
5 x interac>ve screens u>lised to navigate
video footage of exci>ng projects within the
City regions) and branded exhibi>on walls
featuring presenta>on screens that
welcomed and directed all visitors to the
IFB HUB.
The third +oor o-ered eleven di-erent
spaces with dividing walls installed by Adlib,
including The Cube – a 40-capacity
conference area. A dedicated exhibi>on area
featured a large LCD projec>on screen, and
assorted infrastructure was deployed to
support seven di-erent exhibitors for the
dura>on of the event.
Infrastructure was provided to support six
‘Pod’ mee>ng rooms, together with a Green
Room zone and the ‘Pub in the Hub’, a vital
aer-hours networking, socialising and
mee>ng place that buzzed with ac>vity
aer 6 p.m.
On the fourth +oor, Adlib co-ordinated the
technical requirements to support a Mayoral
Suite used as the Mayor’s Oce of Residence
for IFB 2014. BT’s boardroom and Liverpool
Vision’s CEO and Produc>on oces were also
co-ordinated by Adlib on this +oor, plus
another Green Room and assorted press and
media brie,ng areas.
The en>re Hub was also dressed and
neatly ,nished by Adlib using a selec>on of
drapes, so goods and custom elements.
“A huge amount of e-ort went into these
,nishing details,” explained Roberts, “They
were as important to get right as the
fundamental technical speci,ca>ons”.
“The biggest challenge of co-ordina>ng
all elements for the Hub was me>culous
planning and execu>on,” explains Mark
Roberts, adding that although it was a
completely di-erent ball game from running
a large scale gig, the basic building blocks
were ostensibly similar.
Physically the most galvanising aspect
was geng all the kit up and down eight
+ights of stairs, together with installing
environments to the required standards
from completely bare spaces … and seven
weeks later, leaving the building exactly as
they had found it, without so much as a
scratch, scu- or a smudge on the walls or
+oors. “I am pleased to say that we also
scored 100% on this front,” says Roberts
bristling with pride.
Adlib also provided all sta- to run the
facili>es, and with mul>ple events
happening daily, around 25 engineers
supported head technicians’ Dan Brown
and Jon Priest whilst Tim Robinson dealt
with the gargantuan task of warehouse
logis>cs. Client Management was overseen
by Suzanne Adams.
“We thank Adlib for their excellent event
produc>on services which were of the
highest quality,” concluded IFB Director
Ian McCarthy. A1

PR LIGHTING RISE TO THE CHALLENGE ON AL
NAHAR TV’s MINUTE TO WIN IT.
M
inute To Win It is the new game
show franchise which is to be
screened by Al Nahar TV Egypt.
It was originally conceived as an American
prime 4me game show, divided into a
series of 60-second challenges.
It is shown in front of a live audience
and Lebanese ligh4ng designer, Fouad
Hadad, chose the PR Ligh4ng xtures.
This is due to the quality as well as the
rela4onship he already had with HiLights,
the media produc4on company who had
specied the high grad automated beam
movement from PR Ligh4ng.
To emulate the set and the stage
concept which has been seen in other
countries the XR 200’s (housing the 189W
Philips MSD Pla4num 5R) were deployed
in equal quan44es between the overhead
truss, which it shared with the XLED
1037’s (featuring 37 x 4-colour 10W LED’s)
and as oor FX. The fully featured XL300
Beams were also used as oor eects,
60
although these were at the back of
the stage.
The contract has been successfully won
by Hi-Lights Egypt due to the company’s
CEO, Hamed Arafa, as they were the only
company in Egypt with the appropriate
equipment and technical know-how.
He stated that the use of the PR
Ligh4ng FX had proved a big success.
“They provided superior colour mixing
and the designer was also impressed with
the light weight — as well as the fact that
the fans ran virtually silently, which is
essen4al for a TV produc4on.
“Both the ligh4ng designer and

can accommodate up to 950 people theatrestyle; 1,600 for cocktail par6es or 888 guests at
74 tables for private dining. This presents a
logis6cal and ligh6ng challenge that Remote
Controlled Ligh6ng helps the hotel to
overcome with its award-winning iDirect
ligh6ng control app for the iPad.
The user-friendly app enables sta$ to control
the intensity and direc6on of RCL’s lights,
either individually or in groups using a feature
called Light Plans – an en6rely new concept in
spotlight selec6on – which maps lights on to a
ceiling plan of the ballroom. ‘This takes the
guesswork out of spotlight selec6on,’ says RCL
sales director Spence Baxter. ‘Once a Light Plan
has been imported, sta$ at the hotel can place
their lights exactly wherever they want’.
The intui6ve Gesture Pad control interface
and unlimited scene selec6ons ensures that
anyone can learn to focus lights in just a few
minutes and recall mul6ple ligh6ng scenes
with a single touch.
Crea6ng a scene is easy. Once luminaires
have been adjusted, the user simply taps a
buon within the Scenes sec6on, adds a
descrip6on and chooses which areas to
62
photos: Grand Hya
include. The sengs for the individual lights
are saved and can then be recalled at any
6me with the touch of a buon.
When lights are logged into iDirect they
are automa6cally allocated to an area
preselected by the user to represent
individual rooms or ‘Areas’. A dimmer panel
is added to the screen’s centralised dimming
sec6on for each area so that the light
intensity can be controlled from a single
loca6on. This is much faster, more accurate
and less disrup6ve than a team requiring
the use ladders or sca$olding to adjust
lights individually. A1

Painting with Light
VTM
Nieuwpoort Beach
Painting With Light Helps Celebrate 25 Years of VTM.
25 years of success were celebrated by Belgian
commercial TV channel VTM (Vlaamse Televisie
Maatschappij) in a son et lumière spectacular
which was staged on the Nieuwpoort Beach,
where 17,000 people were dazzled by this
visual producon.
Painng With Light’s Luc Peumans designed
lighng for the spectacular. Directed by Dirk
Decloedt, the 25 minute “Great Big Musical
Thank You” show, was set to a specially
composed soundtrack and featured 250
dancers as well as a troupe of huge Dundu
Puppets. There was also a 75 metre wide by 12
metre high waterscreen projecon surface,
dancing fountains and over 2000 pyro cues, all
linked together by the vision of Scenographer /
Art Director Marcos Viñals Bassols and
Peumans’ dynamic lighng.
The ‘stage’ was a 300 metre wide secon of
beach and Nieuwpoort’s two piers – each with
a lighthouse at the end were also lit for the
occasion, which provided an enchanng
backdrop as well as a launch area for some of
the pyro which was choreographed by Vitor
Machado of Grupo Luso Pirotechnica from
Portugal.
“I had to think really big when it came to
designing the lights to match the scale of the
show,” explains Peumans. “The lighng also
needed to be an integrator for all the other
visual aspects of the performance, and the
66
other major challenge was the fact it was a
truly unique sitespecific work, with all
elements needing special treatment”.
Posioned along the first pier were 36 x
Robe Pointes which created aerial effects, and
were chosen for their brightness as well as
their wide range of creave features and
effects. There were also four 25W RGBW lasers
posioned along the pier.
On the second pier which was around 50
metres behind the front one, another 26 x
Pointes were located.
Throwing light into the stage area on the
beach were special low trussing structures built
each side and rigged with 12 x Vari*Lite 3500
Washes at 8 metre intervals for strong cross
and side lighng.
Two FOH towers provided addional lighng
posions for four V*L 3500 Washes and four
Clay Paky Alpha Profile 1500s on each tower, all
fixtures picked due to their long throw
capabilies.
Peumans also created a special effect using
1600 x Drome LED surround lights, which
would usually be worn on wristbands, and
controlled via wireless DMX. Two were
aached to each of the dancer’s wrists, with
the other 1100 scaered randomly across the
beach, making a fantasc twinkling star effect.
They were programmed into the grandMA2
lighng console running all the stage lights.
The water screen was supplied by the Crystal
Group. The custom video content produced by
VTM which formed the show’s narrave,
recounted the staon’s many highlights from the
last 25 years and was projected via three Barco
40K machines, edge blended to form one giant
image.
The video sources were all programmed onto
one of Painng With Light’s Pandora’s Box media
servers programmed by PWL’s Kathleen
Selleslagh, with lighng programmed and run by
Paco Mispelters.
Phlippo Showlights from Lier supplied all the
lighng equipment, and the event’s technical
producon was coordinated by Bart Adriaensen
of MundoMac.
A special episode of the popular and iconic VTL
music programme “Ten To See” was also recorded
in Nieuwpoort immediately before the 25 year
celebraon show started, and broadcast as “Tien
Om Tegen De Sterren Op Te Zien”.
An aermovie was made of the “Great Big
Musical Thank You” event which was also
broadcast on VTM and made available for the
enjoyment of all on the internet. A1

new architectural highlight adds fresh
impetus and appeal to the seng of
Bregenz's cultural mile. In 2014, Casino
Bregenz was transformed and expanded in two
construcon phases: an extension was added
to the terrace facing towards the Fesval
House, and the outer façade was given a
complete faceli. In order to present the
aracve locaon of Casinos Austria AG in
Bregenz to opmum effect also at night, and to
create the right backdrop for a highly
atmospheric evening at the casino, the clients
opted for a dynamic media façade. Zumtobel's
CAPIX evoluon LED media façade luminaire
was able to meet the high requirements.
It is a truly Hollywoodstyle seng, and not
just since the shoong of the James Bond
movie “Quantum of Solace”. Situated in the
immediate vicinity of the lake, Casino Bregenz
opens up above the stairs to the summer
terrace facing the Fesval Square in the heart
of Bregenz. Guests and passersby are
fascinated by the redesigned façade, which
surrounds both the exisng glazed front and
the annex with metal sheeng.
From inside, guests enjoy an unhampered
view of the lake, while the aenon of
passersby is drawn towards the flowing,
slightly irregularly arranged metal elements.
When night falls, the façade is transformed
into a shining interplay of colours, thanks to
the CAPIX evoluon LED media façade
luminaire. As the individual CAPIX elements
are linked by only one data line and one supply
line, the 6500 single CAPIX pixels cling to the
curved façade of the extended casino like a
second skin. In total, the casino was fied with
1140 metres of CAPIX. Since each CAPIX pixel
incorporates three RGB LEDs, the lighng
effect produced by CAPIX evoluon is bright
and brilliant even when viewed from long
distances. In addion to generang colours
and other effects, the control system of CAPIX
evoluon also allows running a sequence of
moving pictures.
If required, the sequence of façade
illuminaon can also be changed on short
noce. At the same me, the new LED façade
lighng also complies with the strict
requirements regarding nature and bird
protecon applicable in Bregenz and features

excellent energy efficiency. Within the scope of
refurbishment, the interior was redesigned and
extended as well, so that now the lounge is
illuminated by brilliantly sparkling DIAMO LED
downlights that create a stylish ambience.
Together with the Fesval House and the
Floang Stage, the redesigned Casino Bregenz
now forms a harmonious overall ensemble.
The façade blends perfectly into the scenery
and adds addional splendour to the cultural
mile that has developed over the past years,
ranging from the 4KUB Kunsthaus to the
Landestheater and vorarlberg museum through
to the Fesval Square. For Casinos Austria, the
media façade opens up new ways of
presentaon. Thus, not only guests but also
passersby can experience Casino Bregenz as
an excing work of lighng art at night. A1

Typhoo

Eaton’s Lighting Helps
Tesco and Eaton’s Cooper Lighting and Safety business help Typhoo Cut Carbon Emissions.
T
esco and power management company
Eaton have announced that customers
Typhoo and another three Tesco suppliers are
set to save 750,000 kilowa hours (kWh) per
year and cut their lighng costs by up to 80 per
cent, thanks to a new energyefficient lighng
Buying Club developed by Tesco and 2degrees
in partnership with the Carbon Trust and
Eaton’s Cooper Lighng & Safety business.
Typhoo took part in a sixmonth pilot scheme
as part of Tesco’s new collaborave Buying Club
which will help suppliers invest in energy
efficient lighng equipment and installaons by
offering experse and compeve prices.
As part of the pilot scheme, which took place
from February to September 2013, Typhoo has
trialled the lighng model, replacing lighng in
its 14,700 square metre factory in the Wirral,
Merseyside. As the chosen provider of light
eming diode (LED) and lowenergy lighng to
Tesco’s buying club, Eaton’s Cooper Lighng &
Safety business worked closely with the
installer Briggs & Forrester Special Projects and
Typhoo to understand the needs for the new
lighng installaon.
“The exisng lighng was predominantly a
metalhalide lighng soluon, but this needs
regular maintenance and frequent lamp
72
replacement,” says James Cosgrove, energy
soluons manager at Eaton’s Cooper Lighng &
Safety business. “We recommended a much
more energyefficient, full LED soluon that
consists of Litex LEDs with inbuilt controls in
the higher bay areas and robust weatherproof
Tufflite Plus LEDs.”
Typhoo specified three requirements from
the lighng soluon. First, it had to be
environmentallyfriendly with low energy usage,
enabling Typhoo to meet its energy targets and
reduce its carbon emissions.
Secondly, the lighng had to be easy to
maintain – a fitandforget soluon that would
provide reliable, longlasng light. And, finally,
the lighng had to be bright and create a
pleasant working environment for the
company’s staff, helping to improve producvity.
Since trialling the energyefficient lighng
system, under the Tesco Buying Club, Typhoo is
proposing to replace all its lighng in a four
phase project over the next two years, enabling
it to reduce its maintenance schedule, therefore
saving costs associated with replacing lamps. Its
staff will also be able to benefit from a beer
lighng environment and the tea company can
reduce its carbon emissions and energy bill
considerably.
The programme esmates that the lighng
designs already accepted under the pilot will cut
the carbon emissions at Typhoo’s single factory
site by nearly 400 tonnes. Across all four
parcipang supplier sites, which total
approximately 53,000 square metres, the
energy reducon will be 750,000 kWh per year. A1

Scottish Independence
Referendum
Glasgow
T
wo TV rental specialists – one operang in
London and one in Glasgow – pooled their
respecve SGM inventories to great effect
recently during the recent Scosh
Independence Referendum.
With most of the broadcast acvity centred
on Glasgow, Tony Kennedy’s Teknique Systems,
having purchased 12 SGM P5 Washlights from
SGM UK, joined forces with Richard Marn
Lighng (RML) to provide lighng
infrastructure in two very different venues.
The live televised debate between Alistair
Darling (leading the ‘No’ campaign) and Alex
Salmond (Scotland’s First Minister, heading the
drive for Independence), held at the historic
Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, was
followed by the acon through the night as the
votes were counted. This took place in ‘The
Street’, the central atrium area of the ultra
modern £72m BBC Pacific Quay, which only
opened seven years ago.
“We handle all the lighng hires and
technical support for RML in Scotland,”
confirmed Tony Kennedy. “It means that
producon companies and lighng designers
get the same level of service on a local basis.”
He was first introduced to the P5s at last
year’s PLASA Show in London. “I liked the
fixture and thought it was the right product to
introduce to our hire stock,” he said. “It also
seemed a good product to crosshire with RML
when required, as we wanted a high output
fixture for various jobs.”
It’s a yes…
for the lights!
SGM P-5s light up the Scottish
Independence Referendum.
Teknique Systems first demoed RML’s
inventory at the beginning of the year on the
Celc Connecons Fesval at new Glasgow
venue, The Hydro, “and this convinced us that
this was a serious bit of kit,” he said.
“As a high output fixture with long throw and
low power consumpon I could see how we
could use them (with the 23° lens opon) at
both these referendum events.”
Flown from lighng bars, they lit up the Pacific
Quay atrium and fabric of the building during the
network broadcast on referendum night itself as
millions tuned in to watch the votes being
returned and counted (with presenters Jeremy
Vine and Hugh Edwards). “We also incorporated
four SGM Q7 [RGBW flood] fixtures at low level
for a colour wash, as these units have a great
wide angle lens,” he connued.
In addion, 12 P5s (from RML) were used to
illuminate the Scosh Parliament Building in
Edinburgh as the backdrop for all the Media
Village reports leading up to the final result.
Summing up, Tony Kennedy says, “The P5 is a
great product, has built in wifi, comes with
various lens opons and delivers high output
from low power consumpon. In addion, it has
very good build quality and is IP65rated – so it’s
usable both inside or outside … which is a real
bonus for us.” A1

500 Robe moving lights specified

iHeartRadio
T
om Kenny specified over 500 Robe moving
lights for the immensely popular 2014
iHeartRadio Music Fesval, staged in the
15,000capacity Ballroom of the MGM Grand in
Las Vegas for two consecuve days.
With a gliering line up of stars (Coldplay,
Taylor Swi, Usher, Nicki Minaj, One Direcon,
Ed Sheeran, Calvin Harris, Baslle and many,
many more including some showstopping
collaboraons), the high profile spectacle was
hosted by Ryan Seacrest and broadcast live on
over 150 iHeartMedia radio staons across the
country.
It was the first year that Kenny was available
to create a producon lighng design for the
event, for which the set was based on classic
and contemporary spheres with mullayered
video surfaces at the back. He worked closely
with Video Designer Jason Rudolph and Scenic
Designer Tom McPhillips, Darren Pfeiffer for
iHeartMedia and Dan Parise for DPS
Producons.
They wanted an epic ‘live arena TV’ look to
the show, explained Kenny, an aesthec that he
has honed to a fine art in addion to his
signature vibrancy.
As well as making things look fabulous, the
producers also wanted him onboard because
of his high profile rock ‘n’ roll background and
reputaon for thinking on his feet, sasfying
the demands of mulple arsts simultaneously,
improvising when needed … and retaining his
famous Irish humour!
“It was a hugely excing project on which to
work,” he enthused “very fast moving and
78
energy pumping, and the lighng had to take on
that same look and vibe, and that’s why I chose
a rig that was primarily Robe!”
“I knew with over 300 Pointes I would have
all the dynamics and flexibility I needed to get
through the very intense programming
schedule” – 12 bands a day performing five
songs each. Each one had to look different and
effecvely have their own individual show, even
though they were all sharing the same rig.
He used the 300 Pointes – doed all over the
network of trussing and set pieces – to create
the main backbone of looks for all their sets.
“The Pointes were absolutely stunning. They
offered so much variety that absolutely no
scene looked the same and I sll had plenty of
headroom … by no means had we run out of
great looking combinaons by the end of the
two fullon days!”
In addion to the Pointes, over 100 LEDWash
1200s graced the rig, used for general stage and
set washing dues in an array of fabulous
colours, 66 x LEDBeam 100s were ulised for
specials together with 24 of Robe’s brand new
BMFL Spots.
Kenny was the very first lighng designer to
use BMFL Spots in the US on the 2014 Teen
Choice Awards in Los Angeles. Having realised
their massive potenal on that project, he now
had more me to opmise their features and
with it, their role and prominence in this show.
Sixteen BMFLs were high up on the overhead
trusses, proving invaluable for creang massive
looks that reached right out across the
audience to the back of the venue. The other
eight on the floor made powerful and dramac
lowlevel specials upstage of the bands. “They
were so bright that I had to keep turning them
down!” he exclaimed, laughing. “The BMFLs are
so incredibly versale that it seemed like there
were loads more fixtures on the rig.”
“Some great teamwork and synergy between
all of us in the various technical/creave
departments helped produce a beauful show
– full of life, colour and emoon – of which we
are all very proud,” commented Kenny, adding
that the client was also delighted with the
results.
Kenny’s programming team of four
comprised Lead Programmer Michael Appel
and Programmer Tiffany Keys who together ran
the show onsite using grandMA2 fullsize
consoles. All the previsualisaon and pre
programming was completed by Jason Baeri,
Andrew Griffin and David Perkins.
The gaffers were Bryan Klunder and Mike
Grimes, the arst’s video was coordinated by
Chase Simonds and all lighng and video
equipment was supplied by VER. A1

Thanks to its magnesium alloy
body the compact unit weighs in
at only 6.5kgs, and its unique
design aids longevity by
dissipating heat effectively.
The visual quality of the lighting
environment produced by LEDioc
HB200 is enhanced thanks to its
glare-reducing cover, and also its
‘soft-start’ function which allows
for a more gentle switch-on than
the instantaneous ‘zero to 100%’
normally seen with LED light
sources.
With a rated product life of
60000hrs, the 210W LEDioc
HB200 offers both a cost and
energy efficient solution for
illuminating large indoor spaces,
including industrial, retail, and

Where to stay
Is Devon as lovely as they say?
Our very own Devon Underhill nds out.
F
or our rst family holiday we
decided on the beau!ful
countryside of Devon. We had a
variety of poten!al coages and hotels
to rest our heads but nally made the
choice of Carswell Farm Holiday Coages
and it didn’t let us down.
Tucked away on the south coast of
Devon, Carswell Farm is the perfect place
to have a fun-lled holiday with your
family. It is only a short distance
to Plymouth Town and a 10 minute walk
through the farm to the coast line.
I oer one piece of advice while you are
there and that is – while you walk
through the cow elds, DO NOT MOO at
the cows, as they will come and
inves!gate and with a six month old baby
this is not the best !me to be running!
Being dog friendly was also an added
bonus and our puppy Oscar enjoyed his
rst holiday away as well as our son
Henry, with lots to see and do, from
country walks to holiday shopping
and lots of yummy cream teas.
The Spring Coage that we stayed in was
very quaint and cosy. The kitchen for me
was the best part, with an open space
and a beau!ful view, this is where the
cakes and bakes were made and the
evenings spent discussing the day.
A roaring wood burner in the lounge
made the coage so homely and our very
!red Oscar loved it!
I will denitely be re-visi!ng Carswell
Farm to stay in one of their six
dierent coages.
We would like to thank everyone at
Carswell Farm for making our rst family
holiday the best – the standard will be
hard to beat. A1

Opinion
Osram calls time
on daylight saving
Osram say pung the clocks back will damage our health.
W
ith the seasonal clock change
approaching in October, Osram is calling
me on the tradional idea of daylight saving.
Experts studying the biological effects of light
who work for Osram suggest there is no real
benefit to pung the clocks back an hour each
autumn, other than the extra hour of sleep,
which is far outweighed by the detriment of
“
Daylight controls many biological processes in the
body and consequently many suffer from sleep
disorders, chronic fague and depression.
waking people earlier in the summerme. This
is a change that many people find incredibly
difficult to adjust to for some weeks and will
experience a significant lack of performance as
a result.
As the days get shorter in the winter, the lack
of exposure to the ‘right light’ can have a
detrimental effect both mentally and physically
in the home and workplace. Daylight controls
many biological processes in the body along
with the internal clock, and consequently many
suffer from sleep disorders, chronic fague and
depression – including Seasonal Affecve
Disorder (S.A.D). According to Osram’s experts,
maintaining a status quo on waking hours
98
throughout the year is far more beneficial to an
individual’s body clock.
“We need more light during the day,
especially during the morning hours and the
tradional approach to daylight saving has
proven to cause problems for our
chronobiology,” says Dr. Andreas Wojtysiak,
Senior Scienst in light and health at Osram.
”
“The stability and strength of an individual’s
circadian rhythm (body clock) is a real weapon
against the winter blues, and this is supported
by the effects of being exposed to powerful
light. Natural or simulated daylight is one of the
vital elements of life for healthy growth and
development in all organisms, and it must now
be a priority to focus on how we use and
consume it in our busy modern lives.” A1
