2015-16 CZ, Full Year and International Open Tryout Information

FCA Gems
2015-2016
Information Tryout Packet For Full Year, CZ’s and
International Open Level 5
Tryouts for: All Full Year Teams, CZ's (ages 4-6) and
International Open Level 5
Welcome to FCA where every athlete is a Gem!
Thank you for your interest in the FCA Gems Allstar Competitive Cheerleading Program. FCA began in
2000 and we believe we have the best program in the state of PA. Our coaches do a great job of
balancing the need for hard work and focus with positive reinforcement. They also strive to be great
role models for the cheerleaders. Our program goal is to build the self esteem and confidence of the
cheerleaders and teach them the importance of team work and responsibility. We teach that
cheerleading is a team sport in which every member being present at practice helps lead to overall
team success. These skills are valuable throughout life and will help them regardless of what they
pursue in the future.
Allstar cheer is an expensive sport. Quality is expensive and we
strive to provide a quality product from the Tiny’s up to the World
Teams. That being said, we often hear about how much ‘more
expensive’ FCA is than other programs. In reality, that is often not
the case. We try to be 100% transparent in what the charges will
be and any variance in what is posted is minimal and unexpected.
There are not a lot of ‘hidden’ fees or other items that pop up
throughout the year. Therefore, we urge you to seriously look at
our costs versus the ‘real’ cost at other programs before ruling out
being part of a high quality program for what is probably way less of
a monetary difference than many realize.
Also, a couple of things to factor in when looking at costs and
programs in general:
★ The choreography fee that is paid at the beginning of the
season covers ALL choreography that will occur throughout
the year. If a team needs a new dance or pyramid, etc… the
coaching staff gets it for them, but there is no additional cost
to the athletes to fly the choreographer in and get the new
item.
★ The music fee that is paid at the beginning of the season
covers the music all year -- even if it has to be changed.
★ We have a process we use to resale used uniforms to help as
many people as possible purchase them at a discounted rate.
★ Additional items are routinely offered for sale throughout the
year (such as sweatsuits, windsuits, t-shirts, window decals,
etc…). These items (unless listed below) are optional purchases. Most people pick and chose
what they want to buy and rarely does anybody buy everything that is offered. There are
individuals that rarely buy anything extra and that is fine.
As much as possible, we let individuals stay at whatever
hotels they prefer at out of town competitions. We only
have requirements at competitions that enforce the ‘Stay to
Play’ rule. This year we are hoping only 2 of our
competitions will have that requirement -- NCA in Dallas
(Worlds Teams Only) and Cheer Power in Columbus (entire
program). All cheerleaders are to stay with their parents or
another responsible adult. We do not EVER require
cheerleaders to stay together 4 in a room as a team.
★
Our competition schedule is set by tryouts and
RARELY changes. We also do not routinely add additional
competitions throughout the year based on our ability to get
bids at the ones on our schedule. We design the schedule
to provide us with the opportunities we need and have
historically had no issues sticking with it.
★
The practice schedule rarely changes and the need
for additional practices is scarce. The changes that do occur
are typically around the need to modify the schedule
because of travel for some large nationals or around
choreography. We not NOT routinely add additional practice
just because nationals are coming up. However, it does
occasionally occur if a team has an injured athlete or the
weather has required a large amount of cancellations. (The
only change that routinely occurs is that the Worlds Teams
will often add a 3rd practice night later in the season when
we get close to Worlds. However, they are well aware of
that all season long.)
Girls and boys at age 4 and up can tryout!!
Don’t miss the original tryout dates because once those
dates pass, only a very limited amount of spots will be available. Those limited spots usually have a
required skill or position to join the team(s).
FCA Gems
2015-2016 Program Rules
o
ATTENDANCE: Many programs allow students to miss practices without accountability or
regard for the ones that do show up. We are able to keep extra practices at a minimum
because our practices are productive and mandatory. The following dates are available for
holidays and vacations throughout the 2015-16 year:
o June 21st - Father’s Day
o June 30th to July 5th
o August 14th to August 21st
o Labor Day Weekend - September 4th to 7th
o Thanksgiving - November 24th to 28th
o Christmas/New Year’s - December 22nd to January 2nd (Worlds teams will have
practice-posted on calendar)
o Easter - March 27th
After much investigation and analysis, we have decided to modify our attendance policy for
the 2015-16 season. Cheerleaders at FCA will be permitted to miss up to 4 practices for the
season. This includes all vacations, school functions, sicknesses or unexpected events. Our
investigation showed that over 93% of the athletes were at 4 or less absences.
It is the parent’s responsibility to know what is going on with your squad. You must check the
website and your email on a regular basis.
o It is the parent’s responsibility to make travel arrangements by the given deadlines. Prior to
doing so, they are responsible for checking the website regarding report times and scheduled
practices both before the event and at the event. Do not schedule
travel for out of town competitions until the modifications to the
practice schedule have been made to accommodate the
competition.
o Anyone threatening to quit or to pull their child from a squad will
be dismissed from the program immediately.
o No profanity or abusive language. We are a “G” rated gym!
o It is your responsibility to wear the appropriate practice clothing to
every practice.
o Never post any negative comments about FCA or any other
cheerleading program, event producer or individual on any type of
social media.
o Every year we go through losses and additions of team members.
The dismissal/addition of a team member is solely the coach’s
decision.
o No one is permitted to approach or yell down from the balcony to
the athletes or the coaches during practice.
o Although not likely, practices may be changed or added at any
time during the season.
o The coaches reserve the right to close practices at ANY time for
ANY reason!
o Each team will be assigned teams to watch and cheer on at
competitions. We would love to have everyone there all day, but
at the very least, you are obligated to watch your assigned teams.
o
o
o
o
o
o
o
o
There will be no arguing with or questioning the coaching staff about their decisions at
practice or competitions.
FCA cheerleaders/families are not permitted to contact cheerleading companies or vendors for
any reason.
All FCA clothing and items must be purchased through the gym. You are not permitted to
make your own or order on your own using anything that would represent the gym in any
way, shape or form. This includes the use of “gems”, or any gemstone name….
You must arrive at all practices, competitions or any scheduled event on time. Punctuality is
a MUST!
NO GOSSIP about any other team (all star or school), NO GOSSIP about a child on your team
or another team. NO GOSSIP about coaches and staff. It is much better to address a
problem than to listen to idle gossip!
FCA cheerleaders and their family members and friends will show good sportsmanship at all
times.
The Policy Book, which provides more specific details about the program and additional rules,
will be posted on our website at http://fcaforms.flosgymnastics.com/. Reading it is not
optional but required.
GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP, POLITE MANNERS AND RESPECT ARE MANDATORY AT ALL
COMPETITIONS AND PRACTICES!
NO GOSSIPING!

the individuals and the specific needs of the full year teams.

***IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER***
Teams are very tentative and significant changes can and probably will occur throughout the tryout
process, including during and after team tryouts. Teams may not be finalized until camp.
5.) COMMITMENT DAY
In order to help ensure our teams are comprised in the best way possible, it is important that we know
that individuals that have completed the try-out process definitely intend on cheering at FCA. A lot of
time goes into setting up the teams and having individuals fail to appear when practices start can cause
a large amount of chaos and upset athletes if drastic team changes are required.
Therefore, in order to help make the start of the season as stress free as possible for the athletes and
coaches, and to give the coaching staff time to make necessary changes PRIOR to the start of practice,
all athletes (new and returning) need to come in during one of the following dates to pay the yearly
registration fee, June tuition, order their camp gear and pay a $100 non-refundable uniform deposit.
May 18, 19, 20 & 21 from 5:00-7:00. Camp Gear will be ordered May 22nd.
Spots assigned to athlete’s that do not come in during the commitment dates will be considered
available for any additional walk-ins that display the necessary skills.
There will be very limited spots available after Individual Tryouts!!
Don’t miss out – attend tryouts!

TRYOUT CHECK LIST
The selection of teams is a very tedious and often complicated process.
Our teams are designed to allow the team to be competitive at a given
level. Many key elements are considered in our decisions because, just
like any team sport, a good team is comprised of individuals with
different strong points because a mix of skills is needed to help ensure
team success. Therefore, it is essential to choose a well-rounded variety
of individuals for each team. We do not have a team at every skill level
for every age group. Therefore, a child may not go on a team that
matches their exact tumbling level. However, again, please remember
that tumbling is not the only important aspect in cheerleading and
cheerleaders will continue to learn and progress regardless of which
team they are a member.
Coaching staff will evaluate each athlete on the following criteria:
-Tumbling difficulty and execution
-Athleticism
-Dance ability and showmanship
-Willingness to accept instruction
-Stunting positions/execution (flyer, base, back spot)
-Jump technique
-Overall attitude/attendance from the past season, if applicable
TRYOUTS ARE CLOSED TO PARENTS & SPECTATORS!

TRYOUT #: ________
FCA Gems
2015-16 Worlds Team Intent Form
The coaches work very hard when creating the teams. Unfortunately, it is impossible to put every
cheerleader where they want to be. The teams are a delicate balance of individuals to ensure the
teams can hit the score sheets in ALL categories and not just one or two.
Over the years we have occasionally encountered issues when cheerleaders were placed on teams
other than where they expected to go and they quit. We have had to, at least once, completely redo
the teams when this occurred and, as a result, other cheerleaders got moved all around because the
actual teams we were having that year changed.
In an attempt to avoid having to do that and to cause unnecessary stress to a lot of other individuals,
we ask that you please fill out this form expressing your honest intent regarding your plans for cheering
at FCA.
Indicating you will only cheer for a certain team or teams(s) will NOT increase your
changes of making that team but will remove you from consideration for any other
teams.
If you are going to be AGE 12 or older on 8/31/2015 and under AGE 19, please:
➢
➢
➢
➢
➢
complete this form
place it in a security lined envelope (one you cannot see through)
seal the envelope and sign over the seal of the envelope
write your name NEATLY on the front of the envelope
submit it with your completed tryout packet
Please be aware that the envelopes are NOT opened for the cheerleaders that make Diamonds. They
are returned to them unopened.
They are opened for individuals that make other teams AFTER the teams have been set. If at that
point you have indicated you are not interested in cheering on the team you were placed, you will be
removed from the team and NOT placed on another team and your number will be posted on the ‘Not
placed on a team’ list (which is ONLY used for this situation).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Cheerleader’s Name:________________________________________________
Please check only one:
❏ I plan to cheer at FCA REGARDLESS on which team I am placed
❏ I plan to cheer at FCA ONLY if I am on a Worlds’ Team
❏ I plan to cheer at FCA ONLY if I am placed on ONYX
❏ I plan to cheer at FCA ONLY if I am placed on DIAMONDS
I understand that if I indicated above that I would only cheer for a certain team or team(s) and if I am

2015-2016 HOTEL “STAY TO PLAY” COMMITMENT FORM
In many of the cities in which we compete at for out of town competitions, the Chamger of Commerce
is requiring the Event Producers (Jamefest, Cheersport, Cheer Power, etc…) to enforce a ‘Stay to Play’
process. This means that we must book blocks of rooms at designated hotels through the official
housing company.
NOTE: This is happening with many traveling youth sports and not just cheerleading.
For the past many seasons (until the most recent), FCA has not required families to stay in a
designated location and, quite honestly, prefer not to have to worry about where people are staying.
However, this change in requirements, has forced us to now require compliance with this policy. We
are required to submit proof of compliance by submitting a variety of items, including reservation
locations, names on the reservations, individuals in the rooms, and reservation numbers to the Event
Producers. The submitted information is verified by the housing companies and/or the Event
Producers. Failure to comply runs the risk of the cancellation of our registration for our teams without
a refund of the paid competition fees. FCA would prefer to not have to take this stance, but the hard
lines being drawn by the Event Producers leave us no option and it is only fair that EVERYBODY have to
comply with the rules. Therefore, we will be requiring ALL members of FCA to follow these guidelines.
I am the parent/guardian of the following cheerleaders:
I understand the requirement and will book all hotel rooms using the link(s) provided on the FCA
website. I will NOT book hotels outside the required blocks and understand that this is mandatory in
order to cheer at FCA. I understand that if I do book a room outside the block and refuse to cancel it,
my child(ren) will be removed from the program without any refunds. I understand that if I book a
hotel room outside of the block, do not get ‘caught’ prior to the competition and utilize the room, my
child(ren) will be removed from the program without any refunds.
I also agree to follow all instructions posted on the website regarding submission of all required hotel
information. I will book my room(s) by the deadlines listed on the FCA website and understand that,
due to the complicated tracking requirements now in place, modification to the reservations will be very
limited once we are within a couple of months of the competition.
I also agree to never call an event producer regarding this requirement for any reason, including
attempting to not have to follow it.
There are very limited exceptions to this policy granted by the Event Producers and, in all cases, they
require form submission through us directly to the Event Producers and the validity of the exception is
verified by the actual Event Producer BEFORE granting the exception and, they will not necessarily
grant the exception even when it appears that individuals meet the requirements. Exceptions are
typically limited to individuals using hotel points for their stay to get free rooms (NOT staying at a
preferred chain to accumulate points, just the utilization of the points), individuals that can get
discounted employee rates and those staying with relatives in the immediate local area (which they call
and cross-reference provided address information). Individuals desiring an exception will need to
follow the instructions posted on the website to initiate the process to request an exception.

2015-2016 PARENT/GUARDIAN CODE OF CONDUCT
For the 2015-2016 season, FCA is making a very strong effort to create a positive and encouraging
environment for all athletes. The parent/guardian code of conduct has been created to ask parents to
be active partners in helping the management and staff of FCA to succeed in these efforts. We ask all of
you to join us in making the 2015-2016 season the best ever at FCA!
Please read and initial ALL:
I will support and encourage all FCA athletes at all practices and competitions and I will publicly
support all of the FCA athletes, staff members and coaches..
I understand that I can voice any frustrations or concerns to Flo via email or phone following
the 24 hour policy. I will respect any decisions that are made by FCA staff and management
that may result from discussions about my frustrations or concerns.
I will abide by all gym policies. I understand that any violations of the gym policies may result
from my athlete being removed from the FCA program.
I understand that violent or aggressive behavior towards any athletes, parents, coaches or FCA
staff will result in permanent removal from the facility and possible contacting of authorities
depending on the matter of the incident.
I will show good sportsmanship by cheering on all of the squads that compete against FCA.
I will not speak negative of event producers, athletes, parents, coaches, FCA staff or other
programs on any social network sites (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
I understand that this is a team sport and that all FCA squads either succeed or fail as a team.
Win or lose, I will recognize all of the hard work that the athletes and coaches put in to
preparing for competitions.
I will remain in the public areas of the gym. I will not enter any of the athlete training areas
without being escorted by a member of the FCA staff; this includes approaching a staff member
regarding classes or private lessons while they are in or in between classes.
I understand that FCA has rules/guidelines for a reason and I promise to follow both the rules
as stated and the ‘intent’ of the rules and to not work to find ways to avoid following either the
rules or the intent of the rules by searching for ‘loopholes’ that allow me to perform activities
that are against the ‘intent’ of the rules/guidelines of the program. I understand that I am
expected to follow the rules/guidelines and the ‘intent’ of the rules/guidelines even if I don’t
agree with them. I understand that I am making this choice freely and that if I don’t want to
agree, I am free to have my child cheer at a different program.
I have read the guidelines of this code of conduct. I understand that any violation of this code
of conduct could result in disciplinary action. This could include my child being suspended or
dismissed from the program, and forfeiture of any fees already paid.
I understand it is the stance of FCA that the use of alcohol and illegal substances is not
permitted by the FCA cheerleaders at any competitions or while out of town at a competition
(regardless of their age). I agree, regardless of my own personal beliefs, to fully support this
and understand that any cheerleaders found to be using alcohol or illegal substances will be
immediately removed from the program regardless of their team or position on the team. Also,
any parent found to have supplied the substances will be have their children immediately
removed from the program (regardless of whether they were ‘caught’ using the substances). If
appropriate, the authorities will be contacted.

Worlds Teams
2nd Uniform Information
Our Worlds teams will be getting second uniforms this year. As I am sure you are aware, we would not
be the first team in Pittsburgh to have 2 uniforms for our World’s teams. This is a fairly common
practice among the programs competing against us at the upper levels of our divisions. It also
provides the coaches with flexibility.
However, this is an expensive endeavor. Therefore, it has not been entered into lightly or without a lot
of thought and preparation. The second uniforms can either be purchased outright or rented for the
season. The rental cost is still being determined and will not be finalized until after the design process
is completed. However, the highest the rental fee will be is $30/month for 6 months (June-Nov) for a
total of $180.
There are also some changes that have occurred in the program this year that will help some to
neutralize this additional cost and some fundraising options:
★ Camp gear will be tops only and they are $30 per top. This is significantly less than the $101 a
set that was paid last year and was what people were expecting to pay this year. (If you
typically bought 2 sets, that is a savings of $142.)
★ We are going to Hartford, CT this year and NOT Atlanta, GA. It is 7 ½ hours from the gym, so it
is a much shorter drive than Atlanta, so many more people will be able to avoid flying. Also, this
year it was NOT a Stay to Play competition, so you can stay at any hotel you want.
★ There will be additional individual fundraising opportunities offered throughout the first 6
months of the season to help interested people in offsetting the cost and anybody that wants to
conduct an individual fundraising event is welcome to as long as it can be done within the rules
of the parent organization.
★ We also are back fundraising at Heinz Field in full force. This fundraiser is often overlooked by
individuals because they think the commitment is going to be extreme. People that have done it
have found it be very successful. There is one evening of training required (which lasts at the
most 4 hours, but has been known to actually be as short as 2 ½.) There is no minimum
number of events that have to be worked. The payout for the events (including the tips that are
evenly distributed) ranges from $80 to $150 with the average being around $100. There are
concerts in the summer and the Pitt/Steelers football games in the fall.
If the rental option (versus outright purchase) is selected, the uniforms are to be returned in good
condition after the final competition of the season. A rental agreement will need to be signed and a
post-dated check will need to be attached covering the remaining cost of the uniform in case it isn’t
returned.
This is an exciting opportunity for the members of these teams and we look forward to seeing them
shine in even different ways! The 2nd uniforms will be COMPLETELY different than their current first
uniforms.
