BIOGR APHIES
MARGARET RAETHER
(Playwright)
Margaret Raether
first encountered P.G.
Wodehouse in the form
of a battered secondhand
paperback of “The Code
of the Woosters” when she was in college.
This, as Bogart once famously observed, was
“the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”
She has penned three adaptations of some
of “Plum’s” earliest published work, JEEVES
INTERVENES (produced by MCT in 2010),
JEEVES IN BLOOM (produced by MCT in
2013) and JEEVES TAKES A BOW. A founding
member of Artists’ Ensemble Theatre, most
of Margaret’s plays have debuted there or
at New American Theater, where she spent
two seasons as playwright in residence. Her
plays have been performed in many cities
including Chicago, Seattle, Atlanta and, of
course, Milwaukee. All of Margaret’s plays
are written late at night peering around a
cat that likes to sit in front of the monitor
and chase the cursor. Her husband, Richard,
is the artistic director of Artists’ Ensemble
Theatre and both of their children, heaven
help them, majored in theatre. Clearly,
insanity runs in the family.
P.G. WODEHOUSE
(Author and Creator of
the Jeeves and Wooster
stories)
Sir Pelham Grenville
Wodehouse (1881-1975),
called “Plum” by his family
and friends, boasts an impressive body of
work including novels, collections of short
stories and musical theatre. Born in Hong
Kong, where his father served as a British
judge, at the age of three Plum was sent
back to England and placed in the care of
a nanny. He attended various boarding
schools and, between the ages of three and
fifteen, saw his parents for barely six months
in total. Wodehouse filled the voids in his
life by writing relentlessly. When dire finan-
cial circumstances in the family precluded
college, Wodehouse’s father found his son a
position with the Hong Kong and Shanghai
Bank. However, young Wodehouse (pronounced “wood-house”) readily admitted
that he “never learned a thing about banking.” Instead, he wrote part time, and in
1902 became a journalist with The Globe. He
continued freelancing sporadically, until The
Saturday Evening Post serialized Something
New in 1915, which eventually led to many
other writing opportunities. Despite the
political and social upheavals that occurred
during his lifetime, Wodehouse’s clever,
witty prose remained largely focused on
pre-war English upper-class society, reflecting his birth, education and youthful writing career. He is best known today for the
Jeeves and Wooster, Blandings Castle, and
Psmith novels and short stories. Wodehouse
was also a playwright and lyricist who was
part author and writer of 15 plays and 250
lyrics for some 30 musical comedies, many
of them produced in collaboration with
Jerome Kern and Guy Bolton. He worked
with Cole Porter on the musical ANYTHING
GOES (1934), wrote the lyrics for the hit song
“Bill” in Kern’s SHOW BOAT (1927) and wrote
lyrics to Sigmund Romberg’s music for the
Gershwin-Romberg musical ROSALIE (1928).
He enjoyed enormous success during a career that spanned more than seventy years.
Wodehouse was made a Knight Commander
of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) in
1975, just six weeks before his death at the
age of 93.
