BICYCLES You will find that many students use bikes as their major form of transportation. There are lots of bike racks on campus. You must lock your bike with a U-­‐lock to avoid having it stolen. A U-­‐lock usually costs $40-­‐$70. There are more bicycle shops in Chapel Hill/Carrboro than there are in Durham. Make sure to shop around before you purchase a bike at any of the places listed below. Always ask about a warranty! ♦ Bicycle Chain, 5400 Durham-­‐Chapel Hill Blvd (New Hope Commons Shopping Center), 919-­‐286-­‐2453. www.thebicyclechain.com. They sell new bikes from $280 and up, and used bikes (almost all kid bikes). They also do rentals ($50 per day and $250 a week). They have many other locations throughout the Triangle. ♦ Dicks Sporting Goods, 5422 New Hope Commons Shopping Center, Durham, 919-­‐493-­‐9884. The sporting section sells new bicycles. Prices range from $99.99 and up. You can order a bike online and have it delivered to your house. www.DicksSportingGoods.com ♦ Duke Bikes, located in “The Outpost” under the Bryan Center Plaza (West Campus). Duke Bikes is a loan program by Duke University that allows you to borrow a bike for free. FOR DUKE STUDENTS ONLY (grad & undergrad). DukeCard required. Purchase a membership for $35 and then donate a certain number of volunteer hours fixing up your bike and others. A local bike shop that does repairs, rentals, and sales of bicycles. ♦ SEARS, Northgate Mall, 1620 Guess Rd, Durham, NC 27701, 919-­‐416-­‐6200 www.sears.com. Sears is walking distance from East Campus. So this may be the best spot to purchase a new bike for around $125 and up. ♦ Target, 4037 Chapel Hill Boulevard, Durham, 919-­‐765-­‐0008. They have a small sporting section that sells bicycles starting at $125 and up. Easy to bike back to Duke from Target. Or, go online and order your bike from Target.
