Statement of Need
Enhanced continuing education and training are needed for physicians and
health care professionals to address gaps in knowledge and competencies
underlying the performance and patient outcomes regarding the detection,
treatment and cure of acute and chronic pain and its related and prevalent
existence of addiction. This live activity is a multidisciplinary approach to
providing education to physicians and HCPS on this subject. The IOM, in its
2011 report, called for a “population health-level strategy for pain prevention,
treatment, management, education, reimbursement and research”. This live
activity addresses the call to action by providing the education to the medical
professionals charged with the care of pain patients in North Carolina and beyond.
Target Audience
Two hundred plus Physicians, Therapists, and HCP’s from anesthesiology,
oncology, neurology, internal medicine, primary care, family practice,
psychiartry, pharmacy, psychology and others with an interest in pain
management are invited to attend.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
1. Provide decision-making strategies that consider opioid, non-opioid
pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic strategies for management of
chronic pain.
2. Employ key diagnostic and treatment techniques for the management
of common pain conditions including headache, neck, spine,
abdominal, fibromyalgia, and neuropathies.
3. Identify risk factors associated with the initiation or maintenance of
chronic opioid therapy to promote appropriate and safe opioid usage
in patients.
4. Develop an efficient and productive clinical practice to promote
maximum opportunity for patients to obtain individualized pain
management care.
5. Promote appropriate and safe opioid usage in patients.
