Recidivism (/rɨˈsɪdɨvɪzəm/; from recidive + ism, from Latin recidīvus "recurring", from re- "back" + cadō "I fall") is the act of a person repeating an undesirable behavior after they have either experienced negative consequences of that behavior, or have been treated or trained to extinguish that behavior. In California, the risk of elevating a misdemeanor to the severity of a felony happens in specific circumstances including domestic violence, petty theft, shoplifting, indecent exposure, drunk driving with three prior charges, receipt of stolen property, etc. This class has been mandated by the court for Diversion and/or as a condition of Summary Probation to help you avoid committing a more serious crime that could lead to a felony charge. The purpose of this class is to help you escape the trap of recidivism. Per court mandate, this class is designed to focus your attention on the seriousness of your misdemeanor charge and actions. By your degree of open and active participation in this class, you will demonstrate your interest in having this charge stricken from your record. Forward Progress is an innovative, instructional program designed to help people who are involved in a pre-trial or post-conviction misdemeanor case. During class discussions, you are expected to discuss your personal situation in respect to your misdemeanor charge. In the eyes of the law, all misdemeanors regardless of the crime, are to be dealt with punitive action. The goal of Forward Progress is to end the perpetual cycle of recidivism by rehabilitating misdemeanor offenders through teaching personal responsibility and helping our clients develop the skills required to move forward as productive, law-abiding citizens. We are here to inform you about what you must do to avoid being trapped by the wave of recidivism. You will be attending a six-hour ARC-1 course. The class will be held at the Goodwill Building, 800 W Pacific Coast Hwy, Long Beach, CA 90806. Arrival time and registration is at 8:30 a.m. The class will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. and will end at 3:30 p.m. Late arrivals will not be admitted and will need to reschedule. You will need to bring a valid Government Photo ID or Driver's License in order to be admitted. Comfortable workplace attire is required. There will be a 40-minute lunch break.
