Christina is employed by a large academic hospital
in the Midwest. When she’s not studying for her
next test, her time is mostly spent in the ultrasound
department working with a variety of patient
populations, including pediatrics, trauma, transplant
and oncology. Christina has a passion for sonography
and appreciates the importance of her role in various
ultrasound procedures, functioning as a team and
providing essential services to patients who desire
the best care possible.

Nhi moved to the United States when she was just 17
years old. Her parents and younger brother remain in a
little village outside Saigon, Vietnam. There, they run a
small restaurant with the absolute best pho and dream
of a better future for their daughter. Before attending
UT Southwestern, Nhi studied at a local community
college in Plano, Texas, where she earned an associate
degree and always pushed herself to the best of her
ability. Nhi believes that this scholarship not only helps
her focus more on her radiation therapy education,
but also makes her family extremely proud of her. After
she graduates, she wants to become more involved
with the radiation therapy community and use the
knowledge and experience she’s gained to help others
around the world.

Jenny chose radiation therapy as her career field
because it’s emotionally challenging yet
technologically advanced. She is continually intrigued
by the potential acquisition, involvement and
contribution of knowledge in the field at multiple
levels – from educating students to interacting with
patients to acting as a catalyst for change to create
a better environment for patients, staff and students.
As a researcher, Jenny enjoys making her own unique
contribution to the profession while also pushing
forward knowledge and information that has gone
previously unknown and communicating that
knowledge to the community so that it can be
further developed and utilized to improve the
profession as a whole.

for the interest of learning, but I also
understand it plays a role in
generating opportunities.
Many people speak in silence in the
sense that they comment on an issue
and when it is not supported by any
data or evidence, the comment alone
does not cause a change.”

Recipient of a 2013 R.T. Fellowship for
Developing Countries
Jackie has been involved in different aspects of
volunteerism her entire life at a local level, and she
always had the desire to expand that outreach to
a broader audience. When she read about the R.T.
Fellowship Program, she was immediately attracted to
the prospect of not only giving back, but also being
able to do so in the arena of women’s health – an
area to which she has dedicated her career. When
she was invited to join the team traveling to India
to support an ongoing women’s health project, she
described her emotional reaction as “ecstatic.” Having
spent her time in India teaching basic positioning
skills, as well as helping the unit’s lead technologist
apply supplemental techniques on difficult-to-position
patients, Jackie plans to return to India in the future
to continue working with technologists and share her
expertise with others.
“I feel blessed to have been given the
opportunity to serve this community in
this capacity. It truly makes my spirit soar.
I have received 1,000-fold the
reward of what I have been given.”

In more than 30 years as an ASRT member, Nina has
served as a volunteer on the Editorial Review Board
as a member, vice-chair and chairman and served
multiple roles in the House of Delegates. She became
involved with the Research and Grants Advisory Panel
because she believes that research is a critical
component of establishing the radiologic sciences as
a true profession and not just a job. Nina had few role
models or mentors available to help her build
her research skills. That’s one of the main reasons
she dedicates her spare time to mentoring others
and sharing her knowledge and experiences through
committees like RGAP.

Letter From the Board of Trustees Chairman
Helen Keller is quoted as saying, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”
The accomplishments featured in this annual report are prime examples of how working
together as a community of volunteers, donors and supporters brings to fruition more than
any one of us could have achieved alone.
In 2013, more than 70 entry- and professional-level students received scholarships so
they could finish their college degree or certificate program. Each one of those individuals
represents the best and brightest in the field. Scholarships like these help ensure that R.T.s
across the nation can obtain the education they need to move forward in their careers and
to provide the best patient care possible.
Research is also a critical component of moving the profession forward and delivering safe,
effective care. During the past fiscal year, researchers received more than $40,000 to help them
conduct investigations into topics like MRI safety, repetitive subconcussive head trauma and
methods for developing leadership traits among technologists. Quite often, these projects yield
valuable results, which are then shared through published articles in the ASRT journals and
presentations at the Educational Symposium or Radiation Therapy Conference.
Making sure the entire community has access to knowledge has always been an important
part of ASRT Foundation programs. Through both the International Speakers Exchange and
the R.T. Fellowship for Developing Countries programs, technologists around the globe are
able to learn from the best R.T.s in the profession.
We all know it takes a village of dedicated individuals and organizations to achieve these
types of successes. Whether you’ve written a check to fund these awards or you’re a volunteer
who has dedicated blood, sweat and tears to helping others, please know that your passion
doesn’t go unnoticed. None of this would happen without you, and I hope you’ll continue to
help us create even more opportunities for the future.
