Meditation class in Pope Hall West. A
certified teacher of the SEED method,
Adrienne has been practicing meditation
for over 20 years. The class will have an
introduction to meditation, including a
discussion of Christianity’s rich tradition
of contemplative prayer, itself a form
of meditation. Adrienne will introduce
the practices of mindfulness, walking
meditation, lovingkindness meditation
and contemplative prayer. A book on the
general concepts of SEED meditation
as well as a journal are required for this
course and will be provided for $10.

Opera Class on June 21— A life…a story…a movie…an opera.
Such is the progression of Cold Mountain. Each iteration has
its individual expression. The opera weaves together a journey
home with a love story as it also portrays the tragedy of war. Our
participants will be among the first to hear melodious excerpts
from the opera.
On June 28 Food, Glorious Food: How you gonna keep ‘em down
on the farm?! sponsored by Creation Care—Vicki Pozzebon will
be the guest leader discussing the local food economy, trends
and truth in food production and food security. Vicki, who lives in
Santa Fe, started the Farm to Restaurant Project nearly 10 years
ago, was the Director of the Santa Fe Alliance and three years
ago started Delicious NM, an organization to promote local food
economy across the state. She consults widely on practicing bold
localism in community economies and is an author, columnist
and blogger.
Announcements
The Nominating Committee has nominated Dennis Sanderson to
fill the remainder of Dave Grayson’s term which ends this year.
There will be a Congregational Meeting after the 8:30 service on
June 21 to elect Dennis. There is no way to replace Dave but are
glad that Dennis feels called to serve on Session this year.
Dennis Sanderson and his wife Susan have two grown children
and three grandchildren, all of whom live in Lubbock, TX. He
was a financial advisor for A.G. Edwards and Ameriprise for thirty
years in Hutchinson, Kansas. While there, he served as an Elder
on two Sessions and as a Deacon on another. Upon retirement,
Dennis and Susan moved to Santa Fe two years ago. He enjoys
golfing, reading and music as his hobbies and is an ardent
supporter of the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
The Nominating Committee would like to have feedback from the
congregation. Please refer names of members of FPC who you
would like to see serve in the capacity of either Elder or Deacon.
You may give those names to members of the nominating
committee. They are Ed Barker, Sara Haber, Steve Kinnett, Gayle
Lomax or John Ruybalid.
Summer Saturday Desk Volunteers needed: The church once
had the nickname “First Fortress” but with the open doors and
hospitality in more recent years, in large part thanks to our
wonderful front desk volunteers, a more apt nickname would now
be “First Friendliness.” We are again hoping to welcome visitors
to our lovely church throughout the summer and are particularly
interested in having a couple greeters available for Pancakes
on the Plaza (July 4), Spanish Market (July 25), Indian Market
(August 22), and Fiesta (September 12). If anyone is interested
in a regular Saturday shift, particularly for July and August, that
would also be great! Weekday substitutes also needed. Sign up
sheets on the lobby table.

Mission and Social Justice
Germán Zárate from the Presbyterian Church of Colombia will be
visiting this month. You are invited to join other Santa Fe missionminded folks to meet with him June 24 at 11:45 at Santa Fe Bar
and Grill in DeVargas Mall. Germán is a Presbyterian ruling elder, a
sociologist, peace advocate, and a thought-provoking speaker and will
share his experiences with faith-based work for peace with justice. In
order to reserve the private room at the restuarant we need participants
to sign up as soon as possible, so call Liz at 982.0208.
Men’s clothing is needed for the Clothes Closet at the Interfaith
Community Shelter—t-shirts, jeans, light jackets, shoes. New
underwear, socks and toiletries are needed for both men and women.
Drop them off at the church clearly labeled for the shelter or call Don
Wilson at 670.1890 for pickup of items.
Play Ball!
On Friday, July 17, at 6:00PM we hope to also hear the chant “FPC, FPC,
FPC” as that will be First Presbyterian Night at the Santa Fe Fuego
ballgame ($6 tickets) at Ft. Marcy Field. A generous donor is sponsoring
that night, and we are exploring all the ways we can connect with the
community. We will be highlighting our musical abilities, having a
couple giveaways and children’s activities, and showing our FPC team
spirit. We need volunteers to help that evening, so sign up on the sheet
on the lobby table and attend one of the two volunteer meetings on
Tuesday, July 7, at 10:00AM or 5:00PM. You’ll have lots of fun and get a
free ticket to the game!

Jim Brown, our preacher this morning, was pastor of First Presbyterian Church from 1976–87. Subsequently he was pastor of St.
Peter’s by Sea Presbyterian Church in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, and from 1992-96 was Executive Director of the General
Assembly Council of the Presbyterian Church (USA). Prior to his retirement in 2011 he was pastor of Market Square Presbyterian Church
in Harrisburg, PA. He and Nina returned to Santa Fe in 2012 and live in Eldorado.
Linda Rice Beck is a native of Las Vegas, New Mexico, and graduated from the University of Akron (Ohio). Linda now resides in Santa
Fe, and she and her husband, Jim, have two grown sons, John and Andrew.
Linda’s music is published by Fred Bock Music, (Hal Leonard), and National Music Publishers, and she is a member of ASCAP
(American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers). Besides composing, Linda also sings soprano with the Santa Fe Women’s
Ensemble, Santa Fe Symphony Chorus and First Presbyterian Chancel Choir.
Linda has done graduate study in composition with Dr. Samuel Gordon at the University of Akron. She received two Outstanding Artistic
Achievement Awards from the University: for her motet O Sacrum Convivium, and for her Requiem.
Linda has been commissioned by community, university, and church choirs, and her music has been performed throughout the U.S.
and in Europe, including Rome at the Vatican church, Santa Maria Maggiore. Her O Sacrum Convivium was sung by the Cathedral choir
at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Santa Fe for both the 400th anniversary celebrations and the 50th Anniversary
celebration for Archbishop Sheehan in July, 2014.
Linda was the 2008-09 Commissioned Composer for the Santa Fe Women’s Ensemble, and is delighted to be the Commissioned
Composer again for the 2014-15 season. Words of Peace is a set of five songs encompassing the deep meanings of “Shalom.”
Other recent commissions include those for New Mexico Highlands University, the Sangre de Cristo Chorale, First Christian Church of
Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, the Durango Women’s Choir, and Northwoods Presbyterian Church in Houston, Texas.
Linda is very active in the musical life of Santa Fe, as a singer, composer, and patron. She is currently working on a full orchestration
of her Requiem as well as a new commission for the Professional Music Teachers of New Mexico which will be premiered in the fall of
2015.
David Beatty is a native New Mexican, born and raised in Albuquerque. He attended Eastern New Mexico University where he earned
a Bachelor of Music in theory and composition under Icelandic composer and theorist Dr. Jon Jonsson. He moved to Oklahoma City
to pursue his Master of Music in vocal pedagogy from Oklahoma City University, studying voice with Inez Silberg and pedagogy under
Vicky Kelly.
He taught voice at OCU and voice and music theory at Midwest Christian College, Oklahoma City, and served for several seasons as
a vocal coach with Opera in the Ozarks, Eureka Springs, Arkansas. He later became a technical writer for the State of Oklahoma. He
moved back to New Mexico upon retirement.
David has served as organist and choir director at several churches in Oklahoma and, most recently, at Christ Lutheran Church, Santa
Fe. He currently studies organ with Dr. Linda Raney.
His compositions have been commissioned by groups including Concord Choir (Oregon), Christ Memorial Episcopal Church
(Oklahoma), Cimarron United Methodist Church (New Mexico), and the Oklahoma Music Educators Association.
David currently works as a chorister, having just completed the season with both Opera Southwest and the Santa Fe Symphony Chorus.
David sings in the First Presbyterian Chancel Choir and plays in the Bell Choir, and he is a member of two Santa Fe chamber choirs—
Cantu Spiritus and Los Cantares. He continues to compose and arrange sacred choral, organ, and handbell music.
Gregory Alan Schneider was born in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Composer, guitarist, and educator he holds degrees from Indiana University
and the University of North Texas. His compositions have been performed across the U.S., Canada, and Europe. As a guitarist he has
performed locally with the Santa Fe Opera and the Santa Fe Women’s Ensemble. He also worked at the SFO as Audio Engineer and
Artist in Residence. In Los Alamos, he owns Music Together of Los Alamos, served as Music Director for the Los Alamos Choral Society,
teaches at the University of New Mexico-Los Alamos, and teaches guitar/bass privately.
