The Cornerstone
On Being a Pilgrim
When we hear the term ‘pilgrim’ we quickly think of the settlers who came over on
the Mayflower in 1620 to the New World and eventually celebrated the first
Thanksgiving. Why were they called Pilgrims? They were unable to worship as they
wished in England, so they uprooted to Holland. They did not like the formalism and
extra-Biblical nature of the Church of England. The small sect enjoyed freedom for
about ten years. They feared they would lose their English heritage and there was the
possibility of a ware between the Dutch and the Spanish. So they were given the name
‘Pilgrims’ because they wandered or roam about for spiritual reasons. They hoped to
have a permanent home and settling in America where they could be free. Sadly, the
legacy they desired did not last in the New World.
Do the Pilgrims exist today? Without doubt, the answer is yes. [Many Americans
proudly trace their ancestors to people who sailed on the Mayflower. That is a great
claim to make, but it does not make one a pilgrim today.] Every Christian is a pilgrim.
The reason is simple. This planet is not our true home. Philippians 3:20 makes it clear
that “Our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord
Jesus Christ.” From a human standpoint, a Christian’s life may appear very stable, yet
inside we yearn for more. God puts in us a desire for what is holy and perfect. Our fallen
world increases this yearning. The result is we are wanderers who may be stationary, but
are roaming.
My trip to Israel reminded me of our pilgrim status. Yes, the company I went with
goes by the name of Pilgrim Tours. I even have a hat with its logo. Occasionally, the tour
guide referred to the group as pilgrims. Indeed, the trip could be considered a
pilgrimage as we visited site after site – each of which bears the label of holy. Without
the help of the guide I would have been left to wander aimlessly.
For our pilgrimage on earth we do have faithful guidance. First, God has given us the
Bible. It is the written word of God and next month I will get back to how we are to hunt
in the Bible for truth. Just as a map helped me and two others in my group get back to
our hotel as we roamed through the Old City, so the Bible directs us in how to live
under the Lordship of Jesus. Second, we have the Holy Spirit to guide us. Our
conscience is only as good guide when it is informed by the Bible and the Spirit. Third,
we have one another to come alongside us for encouragement, support and counsel. I
listed in my diary the greatest blessing of my trip to Israel was being with believers from
around the country and Canada. We as pilgrims are not alone.
Rejoice that you can wander with a purpose as you live to the glory of God.

My newest great grandchild, Audrey Taylor, born on Feb 23, 2015 to Jared and Mandy Lafitte in
Louisville, KY. My next great grandchild is due in May!
Janae is the granddaughter of Roger Youderian (one of the five missionaries martyred in Ecuador in
1956). She is in mission work herself. Lately Janae and I have had some precious times together,
praying and talking about our Lord and His plans for our lives.
Delia is a dear friend in the Rio Grande Valley. Pray that her husband would walk closely with
the Lord. A couple of years ago Bonnie, Glenn, Delia, and I had the privilege of praying with Delia’s
husband as he received Christ into his life.
Valerio is the man who – during my visit to Guatemala last year - walked many miles to
tell me personally that He prays he’ll live long enough to hold the entire Bible in Rabinal Achí in his own
hands! Continue to pray for the translation team working on the Old Testament! (See my prayer request below.)
Esther Cuxum de Larios, pictured here with her husband Moisés, is part of the team
translating the Old Testament into Rabinal Achí. Moisés is also a pastor. Esther spent countless
hours in our home when she was growing up.
Here is an overview of present ministries God is giving to me. Yes, I thank Him for each one. God never rescinds His call to serve
Him. (“GIAL” below stands for Wycliffe’s Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics.) Please uphold me in prayer for the following:
*Counseling re: a wide range of needs:
Parents as well as missionary kids with heavy burdens
Those needing guidance and direction in life
*Supporting individuals nearing the end of life
*Supporting others in grief recovery issues
*Time with individuals greatly needing encouragement: reading Scripture and praying
*Sometimes providing car transportation
*Mingling with GIAL personnel and encouraging and praying with them
*Prayer partnering with GIAL students as they face many unknowns in going around the globe to serve in distant lands
*Brief premarital counseling for some GIAL students
*Sing and play piano here and on a rotation basis at Wycliffe’s Sunday evening “Sing and Share” service
*Giving voice lessons (for free) to a very gifted MK now in college and possibly majoring in music to be a teacher
*Giving a few voice lessons to a GIAL student preparing at GIAL to minister to widows and orphans in DRC: Democratic
Republic of Congo in Africa
*Each Tuesday morning giving a brief devotional here in the apartment building where I live on the Wycliffe campus, to
prepare our hearts to pray
*In recent months I’ve been involved in resurrecting a paper on “Maximizing the MK Experience.” I presented this paper
(under a different title) in 1986 in Quito, Ecuador for missionary parents and missionary kids. Now it needs to be
updated and revised for missionary families and those working with them. Bonnie spent many hours transferring the
manuscript into an editable Word file, so that someone can do the needed updating. This is a MUCH-NEEDED
PRAYER REQUEST.
*Also, I am frequently in touch with the Rabinal Achí team now diligently translating the Old Testament. The two primary
translators – Esther and Elías - were children when we lived there. A MAJOR PRAYER REQUEST.

WIC COUNCIL NEWS UPDATE
Spring is coming..the grass is greener..the birds are singing..the small animals are peeking out
and running everywhere.. the sunshine is making everything beautiful . .I want to run, skip,
hop, lift my voice and shout "Hello World".. well, I want to, but you know, somethings like to
get in the way, but I can dream can't I. Praise God for spring.. just praise, praise, praise
Him for everything.
The Ladies Spring Tea was wonderful.. Around 60 ladies enjoyed our speaker, Vicki Drake.
As you know, our WIC theme this year is ,'Join us for the Journey..' We were indeed
touched, as Vicki, for a short period of time, in personal testimony and with meaningful
words of hymns (that she derived strength from as she handled the unexpected events
happening in her life), was allowing us to walk with her and God , and join her on her
journey thus far. It was awesome!!!
The soloist, Alice Prettyman, sang two beautiful songs that she had written the words and
music for.. They were the perfect words of encouragement for our journey .
And Ashley Marshall delighted and thrilled us as she recited from memory The Easter
Story . . . Perfectly presented.
Well Friends , this is only half of the story.. Food ,,Fellowship. Beautiful decorations, and
Women who love God , His Church, and YOU made our Spring Tea a special time together.

Dear Caring Church Family,
For many months your love has surrounded me
and has given me comfort and help. The Lord has
used you in many wonderful ways ~ with gifts of
food, cards, phone calls, visits, flowers, gifts and
most of all your prayers. I thank the Lord for each
one of you and for all of your practical helps as
well. The Lord’s love and presence each day
brings me much joy. I’m most thankful to Him.

Philip Bliss and Lucy Young were married on June 1, 1859. Philip, only twenty years old, had a remarkable talent for
music. Lucy, knowing how talented her husband was, schemed for ways to afford him proper musical training. With her
encouragement, he began traveling on an old horse from town to town, carrying a twenty-dollar melodeon and holding
singing schools. When Lucy’s grandmother gave them thirty dollars, Philip attended a six-week course at the Normal
Academy of Music in New York. Upon completion, he became a full-time music teacher and was soon recognized as a
local music authority. Philip and Lucy moved to Chicago so he could pursue a ministry of music there. Between 1865
and 1873, he held music conventions, singing schools, and church meetings. In 1869, he attracted the attention of
evangelist D. L. Moody, who continually urged him to enter the full-time ministry of music.
With Lucy’s encouragement, Philip joined Moody’s associate, Major Daniel W. Whittle, as a song leader in a series of
evangelistic campaigns; and “Whittle and Bliss” became incredibly famous, holding successful crusades throughout the
United States.
By 1876, Philip, only thirty-six, was known as one of the greatest hymnists of his generation; penning classic hymns such
as, “Wonderful Words of Life,” “I Will Sing of My Redeemer,” and the music to “It Is Well with My Soul.” Late that
year, Philip conducted a service for inmates at the Michigan State Prison and sang one of his last hymns, “Hallelujah,
What a Savior!”
No one dreamed that both Philip and Lucy would pass away one month later.

I always imaged what it would be like to go to an Ivy League school and be an Art History Major. I love art. Every city I
visit, I make it a point to scope out the art galleries. Seeing the images on canvas straight from the brains of the different
artists is amazing to me. The amount of creativity and design that goes into each painting or sculpture makes me realize
that we are fearfully and wonderfully made.
Imagine that you had a room full of artists and their only instruction was to paint a picture of Jesus using the phrase “Man
of Sorrows” as their inspiration. What would be depicted on these paintings? You might see Jesus on a cross wearing a
crown of thorns. You might also see the nails that pierced his hands and feet, the place where the sword pierced his side
with the blood running down. What would be the expression on His face? What would the expression be on yours when
you saw this depiction?
Would you grimace at the thought of the sound of the nails going into His hands and feet? Would you immediately begin
to think about how he was spat upon, mocked, and insulted? Would you begin to weep when think about the suffering
and humiliation that He endured while He, the sinless Son of God, took upon our sins on the cross so that we might one
day have everlasting life with Him in eternity?
Personally, I would hope that you would rejoice.
Rejoice?! Why would I rejoice while looking at a picture of my Savior on the cross??
Why should we rejoice? Because that’s not our God. Our God is no longer on a cross. Our God is alive and we’re
forgiven! The gates of Heaven are ready to burst wide open when He comes back to take us to our home on high. It’s
going to happen, folks. And I’m ready. Are you?

Pray for your Persecuted Brothers & Sisters
This month the focus is on five special
people and two countries.
ALIM ~ is a covert from Islam who led
a house church in Uyghur-Muslim area
of Kashgar, China. He was accused of
“revealing state secrets or intelligence
to overseas organizations” and is
serving a fifteen year sentence. He has
a wife and two sons that he sees less
than once a month for fifteen minutes.
IMRAN ~ is serving a life sentence in
Pakistan for blasphemy. He was
accused of burning the Quran. In
prison he spends time reading the
Bible, singing and sharing with the
other prisoners. He has good
relationships with the other prisoners
who sometimes ask him to sing
worship songs.
SAEED ABEDINI ~ is in Evin prison
in Iran. He is a 34 year old Iranian
American Christian pastor. Recently
he was forced to witness six fellow
prisoners beaten and then taken to be
hanged. He was also sad because he
missed his son’s 7th birthday. He is
serving an either year sentence and
prays he will be released so he can
return to the United States.
ASIA BIBI ~ the mother of five
children has been on death row for
almost four years in Pakistan because
she answered some women with the
claims of Christ. An appeal has been
filed with the Supreme court in
Islamabad but it could be years before
they rule.
GAO ~ was released from prison to
house arrest in China after five years of
torture and deprivation. He could barly
speak but appears to be regaining his
ability to communicate. There is a
very dim possibility the many
injustices may be corrected.
IRAQ & SYRIA ~ most folks have
heard of the fighting and atrocities
against Christians by IS (self
proclaimed Islamic State as of June
2014). Nearly all Iraqi Christians have
fled the country. Those who stay to be
a Christian witness are plagued by
violence.
In all the restricted and hostile nations
some risk a death penalty when they
convert to Christianity. Others are
beaten or throne out of households.
Still more are forced from their places
of worship or saddled with heavy
restrictions in order to practice
Christianity. Persecution causes some
to falter. But for others, it prompts
heroic acts, causing them to risk
everything to follow and proclaim
Christ. Remember those in bonds as if
bound with them.

folks, praise reports and there
may also be additional church
information about events from

Gifts of Grace
Gifts of Grace is a wonderful ministry where lots of
items are made for several events. Baby
blankets, blankets for shut-ins, parachutes for
distributing bibles to different locations, covers to
help items for those with walkers, and pillows for
cancer patients….these are just some of the items
made for different ministries that YOU can be a
part of. Working times are the 2nd & 4th Tuesday
of each month from 10:00-3:00 pm down in the
Fellowship Hall. You can stay all day or just an hour
or so. Bring a lunch if you want.

There is a Men’s Bible Study available for all men who are
interested. They meet every Thursday morning at 7:00 am at the
Wagon Wheel Restaurant in Mars Hill. Hope to see you there.
Gifts of Grace ~ 2nd & 4th Tuesday 10:00-3:00 pm. A ministry
that provides handmade gifts to the community through sewing,
knitting and other crafts while enjoying wonderful fellowship.
Richie Olsen and his Sunday Morning Prayer Group meet the
first Sunday of each month at 11:00 am in the Church Office
Conference Room. They pray about the worship service, the
pastor, the congregation and other prayer request. This prayer
group is open to everyone.
Everyone is invited to our monthly Cookie & Punch Reception Join us in the Fellowship Hall after the morning worship service the
first Sunday of each month for cookies, punch and fellowship. If
you would like to volunteer to help provide cookies and punch
please sign-up on the tear-off sheet in your bulletin.
Don’t forget to bring non-perishable food items for North
Buncombe Samaritan Ministries (NBSM). You can bring
your items and put them in the church foyer or the church office.
This is an ongoing ministry in our church.
The Prayer Band is a place where we pray for sickness, surgeries,
the lost, missions, updates on folks, praise reports and there may
also be additional church information about upcoming events
from time to time. If you are not on the email list or phone call list
to receive our twice weekly (Monday & Thursday) prayer band
and would like to be, please contact Elaine (church office 645-7344
/ [email protected]) or Sigrid Bollfrahs.
