Traffic Calming
Initiatives and Requests
The first step in the process is to identify a problem or concern. Once a problem is identified it is important to seek the
input of the residents affected in order to seek a possible solution that has the support of the neighborhood.
The Town of Fairfield is
committed to strengthen and
protect its neighborhoods by
improving the quality of life
in residential areas. The
desirability of Fairfield
neighborhoods as places to
live and raise a family is
directly affected by local
traffic conditions. The town
allocates a portion of
resources annually to address
neighborhood traffic safety.
The resources are divided
among education,
engineering and enforcement
activities through the
promotion of neighborhood
friendly design, community
awareness and effective
enforcement. Fairfield also
depends on commitment and
support from many partners
including neighborhood
organizations, Town
Engineering Department,
Connecticut Department of
Transportation and other
Law Enforcement agencies
for success of these
initiatives.
Fairfield’s Traffic Calming
Program is in part a
community driven venture.
A community, which requests
assistance, must remain
active in the process and
ensure that all of its members
are kept informed
throughout the process.
THE PROCESS
1)
The Fairfield Board of Police Commissioners is the
designated Legal Traffic Authority in the Town of
Fairfield. Commissioners meet each month and make
decisions regarding traffic problems and solutions.
2) Seek the input of your neighborhood. Problems and
most importantly, solutions, must be supported by the
affected neighborhood.
3) Complete and submit the attached forms. Your
request will be placed on the next available Police
Commission meeting agenda for consideration. You
will be contacted by the Police Department and
advised of the status of your request.
Many significant requests require time to research.
Please be patient throughout the process. If your
request involves a significant change, such as a stop
sign, please do your homework. Signs & signals must
meet specific guidelines as published in the Manual of
Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) at
http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov

Neighborhood Petition Form:
The Town of Fairfield takes its role in traffic safety very seriously. We appreciate the many
complaints, requests, and suggestions we receive from various sources; because it helps our staff
develop a safer transportation system. Due to limited resources, we cannot always respond quickly to
your concerns or ideas. This does not mean that we do not value your input or appreciate your
concerns. Many traffic and parking situations take considerable time to study and evaluate possible
solutions. Quick solutions are often less effective in the long run. More appropriate solutions may
cost the taxpayers more money, but we must prioritize the spending of our budget across the entire
town. A potential problem in one part of town must be weighed against current needs in other areas.
In consideration of the above, we developed this Neighborhood Petition Form (NPF) for your
use. Through this form, neighbors are encouraged to identify and discuss issues affecting them. Our
goal is to have neighbors reach consensus on the problem and formulate a possible solution. Once a
consensus is reached, it is required that the NPF be completed and forwarded to the Fairfield Police
Department- Special Services Division.
As a resident of Fairfield who has identified a potential traffic safety issue, it is important that you
involve your neighborhood in the possible solution. Our intent is to focus on the most important
parking and traffic conditions in town, as neighborhood consensus is reached. This practice will
ensure our best use of staff time and available resources.
Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
