FRANKLIN HIGH SCHOOL GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 2015 The Guidance Department has compiled a list of local scholarships which are available to graduating seniors. Seniors are encouraged to apply for all that they feel they are eligible to receive. An application will be handed out and is available online. Applications must be returned to the Guidance Center no later than Friday, April 10. Seniors must submit a copy (one copy only – regardless of the number of applications) of the letter of acceptance from the college they plan to attend next year when they submit the scholarship application(s). Also note: if you are lucky enough to be chosen as a recipient, you will receive an invitation for the Awards Reception to be held Thursday, May 28th. Please make every effort to attend – and notify us if you will not be able to be present!! Many scholarships are in memory of family members and it is very important that you are present to receive it. ADILETTO FAMILY/DAN ADILETTO MEMORIAL – The award given by the Adiletto family is in honor of Dan Adiletto, a 1986 Franklin High School graduate who died suddenly June 7, 2013. Dan was a lifelong Franklin resident, who played & coached many sports. This year’s recipient has the same spirit and values as Dan along with representing what he loved: his family, his town and the ability to be a giving person and friend to all. Applicants must have a GPA of 2.5 (or above), be planning to enroll in college as a full time student for fall semester, 2015, be a Franklin resident, attended FHS for 4 years, and have participated in sports at all age levels. Also provide an example of how you helped another person, and/or an example of long term friendship. This scholarship of $500 will be available for 1st semester, 2015-16. AMERICAN LEGION – Scholarship of $500 is available through the “Scholarship Fund of the Edward L. Grant Post 75, The American Legion” to be used towards the expenses of education of the child/grandchild, whose parent or grandparent was an honorably discharged or current member of the Armed Forces of the United States and resident of Massachusetts. Additional information, application and essay topic available in guidance. WILLIAM H. BARDOL JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – Billy, a very outgoing young man, who had many, many friends, died at a young age of 35 years. His aunt and uncle would like to remember him, keeping his name and spirit alive by offering 2 scholarships of $250.00 to graduating seniors who are planning to attend a 2 or 4-year college, majoring in business or education. Candidates must have a 3.0 GPA or better and been involved in sports, volunteering, have shown commitment to the community, fearless in embracing and overcoming adversity, and spirited & exuberant in every endeavor. Please write a paragraph telling why you should be chosen. 1 BEST BUDDIES SCHOLARSHIP/IN MEMORY OF BRIAN MARKEE – Two scholarships in the amount of $300.00 will be given in memory of Brian Markee, a Franklin resident and member of Best Buddies. The recipients, graduating seniors must have attended Best Buddies for at least one year or been an active participant inside and outside of school. Applicants must write an essay on the following topics (no required length, typed): -How has your participation in Best Buddies changed your acceptance or perception of students with special needs? -Discuss an experience you have had in Best Buddies that had special meaning to you. BROWN FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP –A scholarship of up to $500.00 will be awarded to a graduating senior(s) planning to attend college who has played for at least a year on the JV soccer team. The applicant should write a short essay explaining what the game of soccer, specifically the JV experience has taught them about life. The scholarship will be available for the first semester of the 2015-2016 academic year. ALBERT R. “PETE” BRUNELLI MEMORIAL – A lifelong Franklin resident, Pete Brunelli proudly served the town he loved. Over a period of more than 40 years, he served Franklin as a police officer, selectman, town councilor and 11 years as the town treasurer and tax collector. Mr. Brunelli was a 1944 graduate of Franklin High School. All four of his children and his ten grandchildren are FHS alumni as well. A $500 scholarship is being given to a student/athlete of strong academic standing, held in high regard by faculty and fellow students, and who has proudly represented Franklin as an athlete while also participating in extracurricular or community activities. Applicants for this scholarship must provide a brief (1 page) essay discussing how living in Franklin and graduating from Franklin High School has influenced you as you prepare for the next chapter in your life.This scholarship will be available for the second semester, 2015-2016. KEVIN BURR FAMILY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – A $1000 scholarship is offered by Mr. Burr’s family in his memory. The applicant should be a baseball player who is a dedicated team player, who has a good work ethic, a positive attitude, and good character. AMY BETH CALLAGHAN SCHOLARSHIP – Given in Memory of Amy, a member of the Class of 1995, a $300 award is offered for the second semester to a girl or boy who is a member of the senior class who is continuing his/her education. Applicants must write an essay on the following 2 topics: What will this scholarship mean to me? How have I benefited from participation in school activities? 2 BRIAN CARLSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP- Two scholarships for $1000 and one for $500 will be awarded in Memory of Brian R. Carlson (Class of 2000). Graduating seniors who plan to continue his/her education at a 4 or 2- year college or desire to pursue a trade are encouraged to apply. Students are asked to write a 500 to 1000-word essay on the following topic: “Describe a personal challenge in your life that you have met or are working to overcome. How has this event influenced your decision to pursue an education and what do you see as your next challenge?” An additional scholarship for $500 will be awarded in tribute to Brian’s sister who passed away in 2009 and was a student of the Franklin school system. Applicants are also requested to submit the high school scholarship application with a letter of recommendation and may be asked to meet with the Board of Director’s selection committee prior to the selection of this year’s recipients. Applicants must also include the letter of acceptance from the college they will be attending in the fall. The awards are for the first semester of the 2015-2016 academic year. PATRICK CARNEY MEMORIAL- Pat, a young man with a heart of gold and a love of life, died of melanoma at the age of 22. A $500 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who will be attending a 4-year college. The candidates should be in good standing and have been involved in sports, volunteering and made a commitment to the community. This award is for the second semester, 20152016. CHESTNUT DENTAL ASSOCIATES SCHOLARSHIP – A $500 scholarship will be awarded to a senior with a good academic record who has been involved in school activities and is planning to enter a career in a medical or dental field. This scholarship will be available for the first semester, 2015-2016. WALTER G. CHEYNE II MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – A scholarship of $500 will be awarded by his family in memory of “Sandy “ Cheyne, a dedicated teacher in the Franklin Schools for thirty-five years. Lyn (Masi) Pickhover would like to recognize a student who has been involved in community service and may have struggled in school but is looking to continue their education whether it be at a public/private university, community college, or vocational institute. The scholarship will be available for first semester, 2015-2016. CONTINUING TRADE SCHOLARSHIP - This scholarship is offered by Cosmix School of Beauty Sciences in Marlboro, MA. The award will be $2500 for the Cosmetology Program or $1000 for the Aesthetics Program. The scholarship will be applied to the final payment upon completion of the program. ANDREW C. COPPOLA MEMORIAL – Through the generosity of the Coppola family, two scholarships of $1000 have been set up to remember Andrew, a 1982 graduate of FHS who passed away in 2002 from multiple melanoma. Andrew studied electrical engineering at U. Mass/Lowell and went on to a successful career in computer software. The applicant should be planning to (1) enter U. Mass/Lowell and study electrical engineering , or (2) enroll at U. Mass/Lowell (with plans to enter any other major) or (3) enroll at any Massachusetts state university. This scholarship will be available for the first semester, 2015-2016. 3 VANESSA MARIE CUSSON MEMORIAL – Vanessa was a proud 2005 graduate of FHS who had a smile that could light up a room. That smile was sadly removed from her family’s lives in October, 2014. They want to remember her loving, caring and helpful spirit by awarding a $250 scholarship to an FHS graduate who is also a Franklin resident. The applicant does not have to have the highest GPA or to be the most accomplished athlete. Maybe through the years the student has struggled with grades/courses or has had to persevere through a great amount of adversity. The family is basing Vanessa’s scholarship on financial need and a GPA of 2.0 (or greater).They are also seeking a student with the ability to strive through any obstacle to achieve a college education. The applicant should want to pursue a career that focuses on helping others. In no less than 300 words please tell us about yourself and some of the obstacles/disadvantages you have had to overcome in your life. Please describe why you chose your college major and how having a career in that field will allow you to help others. The recipient will receive the award after providing documentation of the successful completion (passing GPA) of 1st semester (enrolled in 3 or more courses). JOSEPH DACEY MEMORIAL FUND –This Fund was started in 2009 by a group of golfing buddies to honor the memory of their friend and fellow golfer, Joe Dacey, who passed away 9/1/2008 after a short battle with cancer. Joe was a native of Franklin and graduate of FHS, Class of 1971. Both of his daughters also graduated from Franklin High and participated in Franklin softball their entire school years from grades 1-12. Whether coaching or watching from the stands as a proud parent, Joe loved to attend all the games. His family feels it is only fitting that they donate a scholarship in his name to a Franklin High School softball player in the amount of $2000. DEAN BANK – The Dean Bank Scholarship of $1000 is presented to a deserving senior continuing his or her education at a 4-year college. This award is for second semester, 2015-2016. DEAN COLLEGE/FHS SCHOLARSHIP – A scholarship totaling $30,000 toward tuition at Dean College is being offered to a deserving Franklin High School student. The applicant must be currently enrolled as a Franklin High senior in good standing, must meet the admission requirements of Dean College and must be a U.S. citizen. Instructions for completing separate application as well as essay topic are available in guidance. DOHERTY, CIECHANOWSKI, DUGAN & CANNON – Made possible by the law firm of Doherty, Ciechanowski, Dugan & Cannon a scholarship in the amount of $1000 will be awarded to a senior based on merit and need. The scholarship is for second semester, 2015-2016. FEELEY FAMILY MEMORIALSCHOLARSHIP/DISTRIBUTIVE EDUCATION CLUB OF AMERICA- A Distributive Education scholarship in Memory of Douglas and Michael Feeley in the amount of $1000 will be awarded to a member of the Distributive Education Club who is continuing his/her education. The award will be for the second semester of the 2015-2016 academic year. 4 FRANKLIN ART ASSOCIATION – A $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a qualifying senior who is attending an accredited school of higher learning, with a major or minor in visual arts. Student must submit application, portfolio, letter of recommendation and transcript to Art Association Board of Review on April 2. See Ms. LaPlante, Ms. Johnson or check into guidance for application and further instructions. FRANKLIN ARTS ACADEMY BOOSTERS SCHOLARSHIP– Five scholarships of $600 each will be awarded to FAA students continuing their education. Applicants must have participated in the FAA program/curriculum for a minimum of 2 years. The awards will be granted based on excellence and/or significant improvement realized as a result of participating in the FAA program in one of four categories: 1) Leadership & Collaboration; 2) Academic Achievement or Improvement; 3) Creative Skills; and/or 4) Work Ethic & Dedication. Applicants must complete 2 short essays and submit 1 art work which represents a culmination of their creative skill growth. Application and essay questions are available in guidance. FRANKLIN CHARGERS ASSOCIATION POP WARNER SCHOLARSHIP – Two $500 scholarships will be awarded to graduating seniors from Franklin High School planning to continue their education. Students must meet/fulfill the following requirements: candidates must have participated in the Franklin Chargers Program for a minimum of 3 years; must have a cumulative GPA of at least a 2.5; must write an essay of 250 words or more on the following topic: “What did you learn from your participation in the Franklin Chargers Program and how will you apply what you learned in order to help you achieve your future goal(s).” These awards will be given out prior to the first semester, 2015-2016. FRANKLIN COMMUNITY CABLE ACCESS, INC. – Also known as Franklin TV, an award of $1000 will given to a graduating Franklin High Senior having plans for a post-secondary education. Special consideration will be given to those applicants who have volunteered in some aspect of Franklin TV’s operation such as office support, artistic and/or technical activities. The award will be based on financial need. The applicant should be planning to continue their education with a major in communications or related field. This award will be divided between first and second semester, 2015-2016. FRANKLIN COUNTRY CLUB HALL OF FAME AWARD – A $1000 scholarship will be awarded based on scholarship achievement and financial need. The recipient must be a graduating senior who has been accepted for enrollment as a full-time student at a four-year college or university, and has completed two years of varsity athletics at Franklin High School. This award will be available for the second semester, 2015-2016. 5 FRANKLIN DEMOCRATIC TOWN COMMITTEE AWARD/IN MEMORY OF CAROL PIZZI – The Carol Pizzi Memorial Scholarship was established by the Franklin Democratic Town committee in honor of its long time Vice-Chair who served the Franklin community in a variety of ways as a mentor, civic volunteer and loyal Democrat for decades. This $1,000 award is given to a Franklin High School senior who has demonstrated academic success and a commitment to public service through participation in the political process, community service projects, volunteer efforts and/or extracurricular activities. The ideal candidate should demonstrate that s/he understands that citizens can make a difference in their community, business, government, or education system. Personal statement is required. FRANKLIN DOWNTOWN PARTNERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP– The FDP is a collaboration of community leaders, businesses and residents interested in revitalizing downtown Franklin into an exciting, vibrant environment rich with opportunity. A scholarship of $250.00 will be awarded to a senior graduating from Franklin High School who is pursuing a career in business or business-related, leadership or other type course. FRANKLIN GARDEN CLUB MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – A $500 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior. The recipient must be accepted as a full-time student at a 2-year or 4-year college, planning to study horticultural or environmental studies. It will be awarded for the second semester, 2015-2016. FRANKLIN GIRLS SOFTBALL ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIPS/IN MEMORY OF KRISTIN GRACI – Kristin Graci exemplified good sportsmanship, commitment, tenacity and love of the sport of softball. She enjoyed helping others and was an excellent role model for younger players. Kristin was looked up to by her teammates and younger kids not only for her powerhouse skills but her selflessness in giving back to the softball community. These two $500 scholarships will be awarded to two FHS seniors who are continuing their education at either a 2-year or 4-year college. The recipients must have been a member of the Franklin High School Girls’ Varsity Softball team and played at least three years of FGSA softball. Recipients must also have a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Students must submit a short essay explaining how they have “given back to the FGSA program” and helped to develop the next generation of softball players in Franklin. FRANKLIN HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1981 ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP – The FHS 1981 Class Reunion Committee is presenting a scholarship of $350 to a senior planning to attend college, who is in good standing and whose parent or grandparent attended Franklin High School. The FHS Class of 1981 has come together in order to pay it forward to one deserving FHS graduating senior. Please tell us how you plan to “pay it forward”. This award will be available for the second semester, 2015-2016. 6 FHS CLASS OF 2014 – The Class of 2014 is offering a $1000 scholarship to a member of the Class of 2015. The applicant should have a minimum GPA of 3.5, strong extra-curricular involvement, and financial need. An essay (of 500 words) is required on the following topic ¨How have you benefitted the FHS community and how do you hope to benefit communities that you are involved with in the future”. The officers of the class are looking for someone who has shown pride in being a Franklin High student and will continue to benefit his/her surrounding wherever he/she goes. The scholarship will be available for the 1st semester, 2015-16. FHS GRIDIRON CLUB ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIPS – This year the Franklin Gridiron Club is awarding 3 scholarships to qualifying football players: the Scott Hayden Award of $500, the Richard Archer Memorial Scholarship of $500, and the Coach Gerry Leone Memorial Scholarship of $500. All senior football players have received instructions from the Alumni Association regarding how to apply for these awards. Any questions should be directed toward the association. FHS MOCK TRIAL SCHOLARSHIP – FHS Mock Trial, founded is 2001, is offering a $400 scholarship to a graduating senior who has participated actively in Mock Trial for a minimum of two years. The recipient will be planning to attend a 2 or 4-year college/university, have a strong academic record, and be in need of financial assistance. This will be available for the first semester, 2015-16. FRANKLIN REPUBLICAN TOWN COMMITTEE SCHOLARSHIP – The Franklin Republican Town Committee is pleased to announce that it is offering a $500 scholarship to the winner of an essay contest. To be eligible, the applicant must be a graduating senior and reside in Franklin. If registered to vote, the applicant must be registered as a Republican in Franklin. If the applicant is not registered to vote, a parent or guardian must be a registered Republican. This year’s essay topic: The following quote is attributed to Patrick Henry, one of the most respected patriots in United States history. Mr. Henry is not only one of our most admired founding fathers but was also an influential champion of Republicanism. “The liberties of a people never were, nor ever will be, secure when the transactions of their rulers may be concealed from them.” Patrick Henry Please write about what this quote means to you in the present day of politics. Include your point of view and a supporting example of how our elected officials are not honoring this honest and transparent approach to government. (500 word count minimum) FRANKLIN YOUTH BASEBALL ORGANIZATION SCHOLARSHIP- One scholarship of $1000 and up to three for $750 will be awarded to seniors graduating from Franklin High School planning to continue their education. The $1000 scholarship will given in Memory of William F. Capen Jr. Students must meet/fulfill the following requirements: 1. candidates must have participated in the Franklin Youth Baseball Program for a minimum of 5 years and at least 2 of those years must have been at the senior league level (as 13, 14 and/or 15 year old players.); 2. must have a cumulative GPA of at least a 2.5; and 3. must write an essay of 250 words or more on the following topic: “What did you learn from your participation in the Franklin Youth Baseball Program and how will you apply what you learned in order to help you achieve your future goal/goals?” These awards will be distributed after the successful completion of the first semester, 20152016. 7 FRANKLIN YOUTH LACROSSE/IN MEMORY OF ROBERT GALLAGHER – Named in Memory of Robert Gallagher, the father of Franklin Youth Lacrosse founder Joe Gallagher, this award is given annually to the Franklin High School varsity lacrosse player who, as an alumnus of Franklin Youth Lacrosse, best demonstrates the traits of sportsmanship, integrity, effort and generally exemplifies the spirit of Franklin Youth Lacrosse and the honorable traditions of the sport of lacrosse, both on and off the field. This scholarship is available for 1 st semester, 2015-2016. FRANKLIN YOUTH SERVICE /IN MEMORY OF CHRIS ASHE, GEORGE WOODS AND VINCENT J. DeBAGGIS – The Franklin Community Center is sponsoring a $1000 scholarship in Memory of Chris Ashe, George Woods and Vincent J. DeBaggis to a graduating senior who has shown a commitment to community service. Applicant must include documentation of their community service by way of personal letter or student essay describing such involvement. The award will be available after the completion of the first semester of the 2015-2016 academic year. FRANKLIN YOUTH SOCCER ASSOCIATION/JOHN E. KING MEMORIAL– An award of $1000 will be presented to a graduating girl who has participated in the Franklin Youth Soccer Association for a minimum of three seasons in three different years. This award is being given in Memory of John for his dedication and service to the Franklin Youth Soccer Association where he was a coach for several years. A separate application is available in guidance. Applicant has the option of submitting a short essay about their experience with FYSA along with the application. FRANKLIN YOUTH SOCCER/AL McCLAY MEMORIAL– An award of $1000 will be presented to a graduating boy who has participated in the Franklin Youth Soccer Association for a minimum of three seasons in three different years. This award is being given in Memory of Al McClay, Sr., who was a pioneer in the formation of youth soccer in Franklin. A separate application is available in guidance. Applicant has the option to submitting a short essay about their experience with FYSA along with the application. FRIENDS OF BEST BUDDIES, FRANKLIN SCHOLARSHIP - Made possible by the Friends of Best Buddies, Franklin, Inc., the candidates must be residents of Franklin and been involved in the Franklin High School chapter of Best Buddies. Two or more awards of $500 are offered to deserving students who are continuing their education at a 2 or 4-year college. The recipient must be a graduating senior who has been actively involved in Best Buddies for at least one full year at FHS. Preference will be given to students who have actively participated in Best Buddies activities and events held outside of school. Applicants must write an essay, not to exceed 150 words in length, describing the effect that participation in Best Buddies has had on the applicant’s acceptance or perception of students with special needs. 8 FRIENDS OF FRANKLIN LIBRARY/IN MEMORY OF WILMA WINTERS – In Memory of Wilma Winters, to recognize her dedication and financial support of the Friends of the Franklin Library, a scholarship of $1000 will be awarded to a student who has done well academically (must have at least a “C” or 2.5 GPA), has shown a contribution to the school and community, is a Franklin resident and plans to continue his/her education at any accredited higher learning institution. An essay (no less than 250 words) is required: The Franklin Public Library is considering a sizeable expansion project at its present location. Specifically describe what ideas you would suggest to incorporate into this expansion to best benefit the library and to be of most value to high school students. Ideas can include any aspect of the library including renovations, programs, library resources, etc. RUTH GODDARD AND CHARLES R. MASI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – A scholarship of $1000 will be awarded to a graduating senior who is continuing his/her education and is in need of financial aid. The applicant should be pursuing a service related career (teaching, nursing, etc.) The scholarship will be available for the first semester, 2015-2016. KRISTIN GRACI “BFFL” SCHOLARSHIP – The BFFL (Best Friends for Life) Scholarship of $250 is a unique scholarship. Kristin’s fight against leukemia was a unique battle and even the truest of friends had difficulty being there through the tough hours. This scholarship hopefully will make you reflect on the good times and bad times and how your “BFFL” was there to support, lean on and enjoy all of those moments in friendship. Instead of the recipient of the scholarship writing a one page essay, someone will have to nominate the winner by writing an essay stating why their friend is the best friend you could ever have. The idea of this scholarship is to have a different way of letting your friend know how much you truly cherish their friendship and support. KRISTIN GRACI NURSING SCHOLARSHIP – Kristin’s dream was to become a nurse practitioner. Kristin had a strong compassion to help others in the same manner she was helped by outstanding nurses during her battle with leukemia. Kristin received her acceptance into the Nursing Program just two weeks before she lost her battle against leukemia. This scholarship of $500 will be awarded to a graduating senior who has been accepted to a 4-year nursing program. This student should write a 1-2 page essay on “What you think are the most important qualities a nurse should possess, and what might have influenced your decision to become a nurse.” KRISTIN GRACI HOPE, COURAGE, FAITH SOFTBALL SCHOLARSHIP – Kristin loved the game of softball. She was a varsity softball player at Franklin High School her entire high school career. She was captain during her junior and senior year. She won many all-star awards, Hockomock League titles and All scholastic awards for her commitment and dedication to the sport. The varsity softball team, coached by Lori Salvia, approached each game with the same Hope, Courage and Faith that she imposed in the way the girls should approach their lives as well. Her family is very grateful for Coach Salvia’s encouragement which gave Kristin the Hope, Courage and Faith she needed during her battle with leukemia, The student applying for this $250 scholarship should write a one page essay on what Hope, Courage and Faith means to him/her both on the field and off the field. 9 HONEY DEW DONUTS SCHOLARSHIP - A scholarship in the amount of $250 is being offered to a senior planning to continue his/her education at a 4-year college and preferably currently works at a Honey Dew shop. It will be awarded to a student with at least a ‘B-‘ average who in involved in local community/charitable activities. A Honey Dew employee will take priority when selecting recipient. It will be available for the first semester, 2015-2016. FLORENCE FEELEY KERAS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This $500 scholarship is given in memory of Florence Feeley Keras, a 1937 graduate of Franklin High School, former Franklin Town Clerk and lifelong public servant of the town of Franklin and surrounding communities. All six of her children are also graduates of Franklin High. Applicants should submit an essay describing how their life has been shaped by the following influences: faith, family, community involvement, humor and adversity. All five influences must be addressed in the essay.This award is for the second semester, 2015-2016. FRANCES EDDY KING SCHOLARSHIP – Several scholarships of $1000 are made available through the FEK Scholarship Committee by donations and fund-raising events. Awards are made on the basis of scholastic achievement, leadership potential, and initiative. KUNEY-TODARO TEAM OF RE/MAX EXECUTIVE REALTY IN FRANKLIN/IN MEMORY OF LEANNE SCHMALL – A $500 scholarship will be presented to a graduating senior who has been a member of the girls’ ice hockey or softball team in Memory of Leanne Schmall. This scholarship will be available for the first semester, 2015-2016. LAUGHING TO LOVE SCHOLARSHIP – On December 14, 2012, a small town most of us had never heard of had a nation mourning with them. A senseless act affected so many families across a small region, but affected the hearts of people everywhere. Between online donations and a comedy show, Knockdown Stand Up Comedy was able to raise money to be awarded to a high school senior. The scholarship will be given in the memory of the 26 people who lost their lives at Sandy Hook Elementary School. We want to make a positive out of such a tremendous negative. In order to receive the scholarship you will need to make a video that is 3-5 minutes showing how laughter or a smile can make this world a better place. ELIZABETH MASI MEMORIAL - The Masi family is offering a $1000 scholarship to a graduating senior who is continuing their education in the field of nursing. This scholarship will be available for first semester, 2015-2016. MASI FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP – Through the generosity of the Masi Family a $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a member of the graduating class who will attend a college or university in preparation for a teaching career. This will be available for the first semester, 2014-2015. 10 CHRISTIAN J. McDONALD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – Given in Memory of Christian, a member of the Class of 2001, two scholarships of $500 will be awarded, one to a male and one to a female. Each recipient must be a multisport athlete at the varsity level, with one of the sports being basketball, and who has shown good sportsmanship, enthusiasm and a positive attitude towards education and sports. An essay of 100 words or more on the concept of team play and what role it plays in your future is required. Each recipient must also be in good academic standing and have participated in activities in school and/or the community. This award is for the second semester, 2015-2016. GRIFFIN METTO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – Two scholarships of $2000 each will be given by Griffin’s family to remember him as the passionate, dedicated, honorable and intelligent person that he was prior to his untimely passing in the spring, 2014. Griffin was a graduate of the Class of 2011 at FHS and went on to study Classics and Government at Colby College Class of 2015, where he was the News Editor of the Colby Echo, an active member of the Senior Classic League and held the posts of treasurer and secretary of Colby’s model UN. The Griffin Metto Scholarship for Academic Clubs/Teams Scholarship will be based on student’s participation in academic clubs and/or academic teams, GPA, character and leadership. Please include brief description as to what this participation/ involvement has meant to you. The Griffin Metto Scholarship for Liberal Arts will be given to a student planning to major in liberal arts. (Special consideration will be given to Classics, Government/Law and Biology, but will be open to all liberal arts.) Please include brief description of intended area of study for college and why you’ve chosen this direction. MIDDLESEX SAVINGS CHARITABLE FOUNDATION – The Middlesex Savings Charitable Foundation will be offering a $1000 scholarship based on the following criteria: Good academic standing (a GPA of at least 3.0 for junior & senior years), community service (a commitment to the community as exhibited through some level of service, either ongoing or project based), financial need, and improvement (to a student who has, during their high school years, had the courage and perseverance to significantly improve their academic performance and make positive changes to his/her life). Scholarship checks will be mailed directly to the college that the student is planning to attend. 11 LEXI AND SEAN MUNROE MEMORIAL – Given in Memory of of Lexi and Sean, only 8 and 7 years old, who tragically lost their lives in January, 2014 in an airtight hope chest. Lexi was exceptionally intelligent, endlessly caring with a remarkable gift of making those around her smile. Recipient of the scholarship given in memory of Lexi will be a female student planning to attend a two or four-year college with a GPA of 3.0 or above, three-year community service /volunteer effort above what high school requires, based on financial need. The award of $500 - $1000 will be available for 1st semester, 2015-16. Sean was extraordinarily resilient, incredible loyal and had boundless energy. The scholarship in memory of Sean will be given to a male student planning to attend a two or four-year college, participated in two different sports for three or more years, based on financial need. The award of $500 - $1000 will be available for 1st semester, 2015-16. ROBERT, MICHAEL AND CHERYL PAPP MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP –Robert died this past year, a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, etc. Michael, his son, died at a young age of 27 years, and Cheryl died early this year at a young age of 44 years. Their sister-in law, aunt and uncle would like to remember them by offering two scholarships of $250 to graduating seniors who are planning on a 2year or 4-year program in business, education or nursing. Candidates must have a 3.0 GPA or better and have been involved in sports, volunteering, shown commitment to their community, fearless in overcoming adversity, and spirited & exuberant in every endeavor. PARMENTER SCHOOL ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP – The faculty and administration of Parmenter Elementary School is offering a $250 scholarship to a senior who graduated from Parmenter School. On the application, please list the years you attended Parmenter School. SSG. ROBERT RYAN PIRELLI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – Two scholarships of $1000 will be given by the family of Robert Ryan Pirelli in his honor. Rob, graduate of the Class of 1996 and varsity hockey player, was one of two seniors awarded the FHS Booster Club Scholarship award for his outstanding performance as a panther. A true American hero, Robert Ryan Pirelli, while defending our country as a U.S. Army Green Beret, was killed by enemy fire in Diyala Province, Iraq. In his memory, the Franklin Veteran’s Memorial Rink has been renamed in Rob’s honor in hopes that Robert Ryan Pirelli’s unremitting dedication will never be forgotten. RANDOM SMILE PROJECT/JENNIFER BALLARINO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – The Random Smile Project, whose mission is to provide a bridge of support for people going through difficult times, would like to offer a $1500 scholarship to a senior boy or girl who is continuing their education and has shown a propensity for community service and volunteerism. Applicants must provide specific volunteer projects, and one letter of reference. The scholarship will be paid upon receipt of a paid invoice at the beginning of the second semester of freshman year. 12 ROCKLAND TRUST CHARITABLE FOUNDATION – Made possible by the Rockland Trust, this award of $2500 is offered to a deserving student continuing her/her education at a 4-year college. The recipient must have a strong record of academic achievement, school or community involvement, and strong character. Preference will be given to students who show financial need. This award is for the second semester, 2015-2016. ROME RESTAURANTSCHOLARSHIP/IN MEMORY OF EUGENE COLACE – The Rome Restaurant is offering a $500 scholarship in Memory of Eugene Colace, founder of the Rome Restaurant, which has been in business since 1965. The applicant should submit a 1 page typed resume as well as a 500 word essay outlining why they are interested in business or culinary arts. The writing should highlight personal strengths and relevant past experience. This scholarship is for the first semester, 2015-2016. ST. ANTHONY AND COLUMBUS BENEVOLENT SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP – A $500 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior. Preference will be given to the son/daughter or grandson/granddaughter of a member of the society. The award is for the second semester, 2015-2016. JACQUELINE A. SCHAEFFER THEATRE ARTS SCHOLARSHIP – In Memory of Jacqui, a Franklin High School graduate, who passed away in 2002, a scholarship of $250 has been established so that other students may carry on her dreams. Her passions were theatre arts, music, choreography, and dance. During her four years at FHS, Jacqui was actively involved in each of these disciplines where they continued to be integral expressions throughout her entire life. An essay of 250 words or less is required describing one’s passion for the arts and is available to students who plan to major in the arts or continue with classes in this area. LEANNE SCHMALL GIRLS ICE HOCKEY SCHOLARSHIP – One scholarship of $250 will be awarded to a FHS graduating player who is a member of the girls varsity ice hockey team and has proven to be a team player both on and off the ice. This award will not be given to the player who has collected the most points during their career, but to the player who plays to the best of their ability and contributes to the team’s overall success. The applicant must develop a page essay on one of the following topics: (a) How have you been a positive influence to the team both on and off the ice?; (b) During your experience with this team, what do you think are the most important qualities you have developed?; or (c) Please explain a hardship or challenge you have had to overcome and how this has affected you. Please provide at least one recommendation. This scholarship will be available for the second semester, 2015-2016. 13 LEANNE SCHMALL MEDICAL SCHOLARSHIP –This scholarship of $500 will be awarded to a graduating senior who is planning to go into the medical field. This student should have a compassion for helping those who seek medical attention and those who are less fortunate. The student must write a 2-page essay on one of the following topics: (a) How have you been a positive influence on your community?, (b) What do you think are the most important qualities a medical professional needs to possess?, or (c) Please explain a hardship or challenge you have had to overcome and how this has affected you. Please provide at least one recommendation. This scholarship will be available for 2nd semester, 20152016. LEANNE SCHMALL MEMORIAL/”IT’S ALL ABOUT FAMILY” SCHOLARSHIP – Leanne enjoyed doing things with her family such as going on vacations together and family parties as well as being together at holidays with aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. Her family was very important to her. She was very close with her family/ extended family and shared all the ups and downs with her entire family. The applicant must write a one page essay on one of the following: “What does your family mean to you and why do you appreciate them?”, “How has your family made a great impact on your life?, or “How has a tragedy struck your family and caused you all to pull closer together as a family?” One scholarship of $250 will be awarded to a senior graduating from Franklin High School and will be available for 2nd semester, 2015-2016. LEANNE SCHMALL & JENNA PASQUINO MEMORIAL/”LEAN ON ME WHEN YOU’RE NOT STRONG” SCHOLARSHIP – Leanne loved her friends! They meant the world to her. That’s why this scholarship has been changed to remember not only Leanne but also her best friend, Jenna Pasquino, who tragically passed away in spring, 2009. She liked to share all the good times but would also be there for the bad or sad times as well. She loved to laugh with them, spend time with them and go places together. She also had a caring heart and would be there for them in times of need to do what she could to help. Leanne would do whatever she could do for her friends. She would laugh with them when they were happy and cry with them when they were sad. She did her best to always remain friends with everyone she met even if it didn’t mean hanging out but just smiling or saying “hi” to them as they past. When she was sick all of these friends pulled together for her, even friends she hadn’t been hanging out with yet were still her friends. A two-page essay is required on one of the following topics: “How have you been there to help out a friend(s) in either a good time, bad or sad time?”, “What does a friend really mean to you?”, or “How has a friend’s life effected or changed your life?” One scholarship of $250 will be awarded to a senior graduating from Franklin High School and will be available for 2nd semester, 2015-2016. 14 LEANNE SCHMALL SOFTBALL SCHOLARSHIP – One $250.00 scholarship will be awarded to FHS graduating senior who is a member of the softball team. This player should show dedication, compassion, and leadership. This scholarship is not to be rewarded to the player who has the best record, but rather the player who has worked her hardest both on and off the field. The applicants should develop a 2 page essay on one of the following topics: a.) How have you been a positive influence on the team both on and off the field?; b.) During your experiences with this team, what do you think are the most important qualities you have developed?; or c.) Please explain a hardship or challenge you have had to overcome and how this has affected you. Please provide at least one recommendation. This scholarship will be available for the second semester, 2015-2016. 2015 SOCCER FOR SMILES SCHOLARSHIP/KATHLEEN M. MADDEN MEMORIAL –The scholarship, set up by Franklin teens through a local charity soccer tournament, is, this year sponsored to remember Kathleen Madden, a Franklin mom who was fully involved in the community with an enthusiasm for service and tragically passed away due to inflammatory breast cancer this past year. The recipient will be a graduating senior who is a Franklin resident, planning to attend a 4-year college or university, who has demonstrated significant service to the community. An essay (250 to 650 words) is required to address both of the following: (1) Applicant should describe his/her community service participation. Beyond listing activities, applicant should be specific about his/her own involvement and tasks; and (2) applicants should describe how his/her participation in service work has impacted you. The applicant may consider these questions to guide his/her response: How has community service impacted you as an individual? What advice would you give to younger students to encourage them to be involved in community service? What lessons will you carry to college and beyond? Amount to be determined, based on qualified candidates. THOMAS A. WAGNER, JR. SCHOLARSHIP FOR ACADEMIC & COMMUNITY EXCELLENCE – This $5,000 scholarship has been established to honor the contributions of Thomas A. Wagner Jr., Franklin Public School Committee Chairman (1991-94) and his lifetime commitment to community service, education and personal excellence. The applicant should be a graduating Franklin High School senior in the top 20% of his/her class, who plans to attend a four year college/university within 6 months of high school graduation and needs financial assistance. The selected recipient will personify integrity, hard work, perseverance, and show motivation to pursue a successful future. Preference will be given to those seniors from the Jefferson Elementary School Community, and specifically to those who are former students of Mrs. Paula Wagner.
