Karen Minsky
Marketing Director
My name is David Goldstein and I am delighted
to join the Friedberg team! For over 20 years
I have worked in the Jewish community in
a variety of ways, including the Bureau of
Jewish Education of Greater Boston, Hebrew
College and Young Judaea. I have been involved in every aspect
of the Jewish community, with a focus on education, Israel, and
professional development. I am a big believer in the unique role
and tremendous value that the JCC brings to our community. I
am excited to be joining the Friedberg JCC as we look to expand
our programmatic offerings while continuing to maintain the
wonderful level of customer service that that I have seen in my
short time here. I look forward to meeting and working with
many of you over the upcoming months!
Hello, I’m Karen Minsky and Iam delighted
to be back at my home away from home,
the Friedberg JCC. After spending close to a
decade in NYC at both the 92nd Street Y and
UJA-Federation of New York, I’m thrilled to be
here in Oceanside. It’s so great to be a part of this vibrant and
wonderful community full-time. I have previously worked with
the JCC on a volunteer level, having a blast designing my son’s
preschool yearbook when he was a student in Miss Caryn’s
class, and more recently working with the Sunrise Association
on fundraising materials. Both of my boys attended our
preschool program and will now be attending Stay at the J. It
has been a joy reconnecting with old friends, and especially
our preschool teachers!

to spend time with family and friends, go to the theater, cook and
eat. I look forward to meeting and working with all of you. Any
questions or concerns, call me at 516-634-4179.
Hi, my name is Denise Torre and I am the

The Lyrics of Dorothy Fields
Thursday, May 14
7:30 pm
Presenter: Marc Courtade
At a time when few women worked in the
music industry, Dorothy Fields became
the first major female songwriter. She
was born into a show business family in
1904, began writing lyrics in the 1920’s
and continued writing lyrics through her
last Broadway show in 1973, Seesaw. In
between, she worked with many great
songwriters like Jimmy McHugh (“On the
Sunny Side of the Street”, “I Can’t Give You
Anything But Love” and “I’m in the Mood
for Love”), Jerome Kern (“Pick Yourself
Up”, “The Way You Look Tonight”, “A Fine
Romance”) Sigmund Romberg (“Close
as Pages in a Book”), Arthur Schwartz
(“Alone Too Long”) and Cy Coleman (“Big
Spender” and “It’s Not Where You Start”).

Neighborhoods of Brooklyn
Thursday, March 19 • 1 pm
Presenter: Professor John Manbech
Brooklyn evolved from six Dutch towns into over 90 individual
neighborhoods. Along the way, suburban towns were annexed and
an independent city evolved. After consolidation with New York,
row houses grew on former farmland as the flow from overcrowded
Manhattan extended Brooklyn’s boundaries further south. Newer
populations filled apartment houses and Brooklyn stoops, under
tree-lined streets with enviable lawns. As the population shifted
different ethnicities transformed neighborhoods into vibrant
communities and younger populations found Brooklyn an exciting
place to live. Now, the most populous borough of Greater New York
still multiplies as it discovers even newer neighborhoods.
