Conte Community Arts Gallery, Frist Center for the Visual Arts

Anthology: Visual Narratives from Nashville’s Print Community is a juried exhibition that celebrates Nashville’s
small presses and artists who use printing techniques in artistically significant ways to tell stories. Whether in
graphic novels, songs, concrete poems, updated folktales and urban legends, or other ways of sharing ideas and
imaginative constructions, the narrative in all its printed forms represents the heart of Nashville’s culture.
Book artists, printmakers, and printers within a 55-mile radius of Nashville are invited to submit up to three works
of art—books, posters, or other printed mediums—for consideration by a jury.
Media: One (or more) print/printmaking techniques—letterpress, silkscreen, relief, intaglio, lithography, or
digital—must be primary in the production of work submitted for this exhibition.
Size limits: The exhibition will be presented in the Frist Center’s Conte Community Arts Gallery (the entry hallway
gallery). Preference will be given to works that do not exceed 36 inches in height or width, or 12 inches in depth.
Because space is limited, two-dimensional work, small artists’ books, and printed ephemera that can be displayed on the walls or in narrow cases or vitrines are preferred. See the addendum below for further information
about the Conte Community Arts Gallery.
Selection process: The work exhibited in Anthology will be selected through a “blind” jurying process. Three
jurors—regional and national experts in the field of contemporary art, artists’ books, and printmaking—will
evaluate the work submitted. Work receiving the highest overall evaluations will be accepted. Images that
identify the artists or presses/imprints, including signatures, will be disqualified.

Display requirements: Artists included in the exhibition shall prepare their works for installation. Visitors will
not be permitted to handle the works of art, so they must be framed or placed under glass or Plexiglas. Twodimensional works should be ready to hang in a frame or with appropriate mounting hardware provided.
The Frist Center will provide Plexiglas vitrines for three-dimensional works.
Submission process: A maximum of three works created within the last five years may be submitted per artist.
Entrants may submit up to three views of each three-dimensional work.
It is the artist’s responsibility to clearly and accurately represent the level of craft, content, and color of each
work of art. Please complete a separate entry form for each work submitted, and name your image files in
the following manner: (for the first entry) yourlastname-1-a.jpg, yourlastname-1-b.jpg, yourlastname-1-c.jpg;
(second entry) yourlastname-2-a.jpg, etc. You may add a short (50 words maximum) statement about each work
submitted—the intent of the work and why/how it tells a story.
All entries must be received electronically no later than midnight (Central Time) on May 5, 2015. Artists whose
works are selected for the exhibition will be notified via e-mail. The Frist Center reserves the right to decline any
accepted artworks upon delivery if the condition or quality are other than represented in the electronic entry. The
delivery of work to the Frist Center is the responsibility of the artist, in conjunction with a Frist Center registrar.

Promotion: Artists grant to the Frist Center for the Visual Arts (FCVA) a non-exclusive license to reproduce
images of accepted works, and to publicly display, perform, and distribute such reproductions, for FCVA’s
publicity, marketing, and educational use, all in any format and through any media, including FCVA’s website.
Artists further grant this license to the Goldsmith Press & Rare Type Collection at Austin Peay University, the
College Book Art Association, and the Columbia College (Chicago) Center for Book and Paper Arts for publicity,
marketing, and educational use, including conference advertisements and reviews in journals.
Addendum: Conte Community Arts Gallery Guidelines
The Conte Community Arts Gallery is a multipurpose space inside the Frist Center for the Visual Arts (FCVA),
endowed with a gift from Tennessee First Lady Andrea Conte and Governor Phil Bredesen, in which exhibitions
of art that have particular relevance to Nashville and its surrounding communities are presented. The gallery is a
corridor connecting the exterior of the building to the primary galleries (defined as galleries that have climate
and security controls that meet accepted museum standards), the gift shop, public program and meeting spaces,
and offices.
Content limitations
Exhibitions are on view to all who pass through the Frist Center. Works of art on view in the Conte Gallery should
be suitable for all ages.
Gallery environment and security
As an active public corridor, and a main entrance to the building, the Conte Gallery does not have the full climate
and security controls of the primary galleries. The Conte Gallery experiences fluctuations in light, temperature,
and humidity levels that exceed those recommended for the protection of works of art that are sensitive to those
factors. There is a single security post at the entrance to the gallery, and a door leading directly outdoors.
Visitors may enter the space with parcels, large bags, umbrellas, cameras, pens, and other objects not permitted
in the primary galleries. Additionally, food and drink are allowed in this gallery during certain public events.
Restrictions on art
Due to these factors, certain limits are placed on the type of art that can be presented in the Conte Gallery.
Preference is given to works by living artists; works that are not exceptionally sensitive to the deleterious effects
of excessive light, excessive or insufficient humidity, or fluctuations in temperature; works that are not unique,
such as certain types of photographs, which could be replicated if damage were suffered; and works produced
in a FCVA outreach workshop, school, or other educational setting.
FCVA will make every reasonable effort to protect works of art on view in the Conte Gallery. This may include
glazing and framing or reframing works on paper and paintings, physically attaching the art object to the
wall with security hardware, positioning certain touch-sensitive unglazed works out of reach of the visitor,
stanchioning individual works, or placing three-dimensional works in an enclosed vitrine. As light damage is
cumulative, any works that are particularly light-sensitive will be presented for a time period that will typically
not exceed three months. If works are on view for longer than that, measures will be taken to minimize the
amount of light received by the object. FCVA will self-insure all works on loan to the Conte Gallery.
Full disclosure to lenders
To assure transparency in developing exhibitions for the Conte Community Arts Gallery, FCVA is committed to
advising all potential lenders, and artists if they are living, of the restrictions as described above. Lenders and
artists must agree in writing to the presentation of the work(s) that FCVA wishes to present. FCVA reserves the
right to remove any artwork from public view at any time for any reason.
