They'll meet Moses (“he got his start in the bush leagues”), Noah (“that guy can really swing the lumber!”), Abraham (“with his son Isaac at the plate, it looks like the Manager is calling for a sacrifice...”) and many more. Lamar Tiger fans were in abundance on Friday evening, April 24, at the Lamar High School gymnasium, as the 2014 State Championship rings were presented to the football team. My Country 101.7's Joe Manns, affectionately known on-air as “Uncle Joe”, opened the ceremony, mentioning the businesses that were responsible for the printing of the championship posters. Those recognized were Legacy Farm & Lawn, Thorco Industries, Jones Plumbing, Heating and Air, Lamar Bank & Trust Company, Truman Healthcare and Rehabilitation, Jeffries Plumbing and Heating, Vision Solutions, Dr. Ted Reavley, Schnelle Sheet Metal, Lamar Travel Plaza and Lamar Truck and Tire, Shelter Insurance Agent Bruce Belline and My Country 101.7. Uncle Joe also mentioned that the ceremony was being video cast, thanks to Truman Healthcare and Vision Solutions. He stated that new this past season was the addition of live streaming of Friday night football games. Although Uncle Joe is not a resident of Lamar, he related that he felt as if it was his second home and was extremely proud of the community's resilience. He then presented Coach Scott Bailey with the framed championship poster, which will be displayed at the school. Coach Bailey proceeded to make several announcements, including school physicals being held the next week, as well as the fact that prom was the following evening. Bailey told his team that he required three things from them regarding the prom. Number one was to get no blood on their championship ring; in other words, no wrecks! Number two was the fact that it wasn't necessary to partake of alcoholic beverages in order to have a good time. Number three, and the one that got the best response from those attending, was the fact that he was much too young to be coaching anyone's kids! He had written in a book some of these words. That America must win this war and that he was going to do his utmost best to bring this about. That we would never surrender to anyone who did not want peace, but would fight as if the world depended on him and him alone to save America. It went on, but was very moving. America must be saved at all cost. Someone told me that he had been asked what he would do if there was a knife at his throat or a gun at his head, would he denounce that he was a Christian to live? www.lamardemocrat.com He said why would he do that when he is just sending me to Heaven a little sooner than he expected, but it would be a great place to go. I went to Gore, Okla. this week for the Jerry Garners' 50th anniversary. Who did I see but the Boyd Arthurs. We all had a long drive, but had a good time. Jerry had tricked Linda on their 49th anniversary to go to a boutique, where she was to buy her first ever wedding dress and got down on his knees to propose again to marry her on their 50th. It was a great thing to see. I was suppose to take Dorothy Miller with me, but Kamala and I ended up at a sale on Friday and Saturday. It was so good that I just barely had time to drive down there. Sorry Dorothy. On Friday and Saturday Kamala and I did a little auction time and had a ball. There was so much stuff and a lot that I didn’t even know what it was. Thanks to Reid A. for his help on my hallway. He is so good at his craft. Thursday, I was at the car cruise for a short time in Lockwood. I didn’t get to talk to Willard because he left before I did. Landon Steel said he had a big one this week and was soon to be out for this semester. He and Anastazia are both enrolled for the next one too. Lost my phone service for a little while last night. That gave me a little peace for a while. Love phone calls, but the Big Nickle forgot to take my ad out for the rental house and I was getting all kinds of calls on it, but none on all the CBs that I have, so guess they will go on e-bay. Kaitlyn Davis brought a nice quilt she had made and a really pretty painting she had done of a Day Lily. Ryan Davis brought a nice photograph of a fall scene. He hasn't done photography very long and he did a great job. Mycah Reed brought Jellybean, a Blue Cochrin Bantam chicken that she had raised from a baby chick and also brought two egg displays and a jar of peanut butter. Aidan Reed brought a swim trophy and a form to explain “City streets are unsatisfactory playgrounds for children because of the danger, because most good games are against the law, because they are too hot in summer, and because in crowded sections of the city they are apt to be schools of crime.” Periodical Postage Paid at Lamar, Missouri 64759 SUBSCRIPTION RATES (includes tax) 2015 Barton County Residents: 1 Year (Includes Online)..................................................$40.00 Barton County Residents with Senior Discount: 1 Year (Includes Online)...........$36.00 Postal Customer: Seventy-five Cents (tax included) Serving Lamar, Golden City, Lockwood, Jasper, Sheldon, Mindenmines and Liberal for 145 years. I made it up there bright and early (at least for me!) and there was a decent size crowd. I wanted to make sure to visit Sarah Hertzler in order to get my weekly allotment of pie, then left to return in a couple of hours when the market was in full swing. I really missed the Indian dancers that have been there before, but despite them not being present, there was still plenty to do for all ages. I have always been a farmers market kind of person, never having the knowledge or energy to plant my own garden. But I love to reap the benefits... ergo, the farmers market! Before Lamar ever had much of a market, on our many excursions to and from Texas, we would al- ways make a pit stop at a roadside stand in order to stock up on all kinds of goodies. To me there is nothing better than fresh produce and of course you can buy items earlier in the season the further south you go. In fact, I am so ready for a good vine ripened tomato. I think I could live on them in the summertime. But in the meantime I must settle for the excellent pies that Sarah sells. These are not just ordinary pies, they are extraordinary, delectable treats. I love pecan or lemon meringue and Gary likes apricot or apple. Not only can they be purchased in larger pies, but they also have a smaller version of the same. We consider these such a treat, that I even purchased several for Christmas gifts this past year. My father, Oliver Metzger, had never planted a garden before in his life and upon his retirement he decided it was time to do so. He went to the local library in Cary, North Carolina, which is where he was living at the time, and checked out every book he could find on planting a successful garden. I remember he always had a spectacular garden, even as he got older and found it harder to tend to. Then when Jud was younger he decided he was going to plant a garden and pretty much winged it. A few items were successful, but a few were not. Not being sure how to actually till the ground to create the garden, he did it his way (to the chagrin of Gary) and to this day we still have what is called Juddy's Pond in the backyard, where the garden once was. I have had several point out that the tree I spoke of last week, with the whirlybirds, is a Maple. Maybe I Letter to the editor (Editor's note: The following letter was sent to Carolyn Carrier, in response to her letter to the editor that was submitted to the Lamar Democrat). Dear Mrs. Carrier: In reviewing your note published in the paper to our board thanking them for reinstating the FACS program, there are some things you state that are not accurate. I would like to take a moment to correct those. First Lockwood’s MSBA Board Policy BCB states, “The President of the Board, in addition to duties prescribed by law, will exercise such powers as properly pertain to the office according to Robert’s Rules of Order, Revised. He or she shall have the right, as shall other members of the Board, to offer resolutions, to discuss questions and to vote thereon.” So although Robert’s Rules of Order are mentioned as a guide, the president may indeed present motions and vote on matters. Second, on the same point Susan Goldhammer from MSBA notes, “Even if not covered under Robert’s Rules, there is no law that prohibits a Board president from voting or introducing a motion.” She goes on to say, “I do not feel comfortable lim- ought to go to the library and check out books on trees, as I am not very knowledgeable about the various types. As I type this, it is May 1 and I remember many May Day programs in elementary school, where we would decorate and all dance around the May Pole. Heather and I were saying that we could use the poles out front that hold up the canopy here at the Democrat office, but there's a major problem. We have a bird sitting on a nest at the top of the pole! According to Richard they are some type of finch and you can definitely tell which one is the male by its pretty red breast. Hopefully they won't decide to relieve themselves on customers (or us) as we enter the door. If that's not a sure sign of spring, I don't know what is...... iting the President without law mandating such limitations. I do have some Board Presidents that choose not to vote unless there is a tie and choose not to bring motions, but there is no law mandating such.” Lastly in addressing the Board Members who had to leave early, they were present from 4:30 in the afternoon until time to leave at 7:00 for their church/family obligation. During that time there was much thought and discussion. The discussions were in depth and when they left, they had given their approval to vote in the same manner as the remaining members. So yes in fact there was unity on the issue. I think that was an unfair shot at the Board. They are trying to make decisions in the best interest of this school district in financial times when the State Funding Formula is underfunded by $400 million dollars. To serve on the Board for no pay is a worthy endeavor. For that service, you should not have to take unfair criticism. This is the second time Robertson has earned the honor this season. Robertson helped guide the Gorillas to a runnerup finish in the MIAA regular season as she made an appearance in five of the six Pitt State games on the week and earned a 4-0 record for the week. Robertson's biggest accomplishment of the week was breaking a 13-yearold school record for individual strikeouts in a season in the second inning of game one against Central Oklahoma on Sunday (April 26). She now has 212 strikeouts on the season, which leads the MIAA. In the second game she went on to help the Gorilla pitching staff set the school record for team strikeouts in a season with 285. For the week, Robert- son pitched 31.0 innings, including four complete games and winning both of Sunday's games over Central Oklahoma to earn the second-place spot in the league standings. She struck out 32 batters on the week, while allowing the opponents only a .181 batting average and earning a 1.31 ERA. Robertson leads the MIAA with a 1.88 ERA, a .202 opponent batting average, 201.1 innings pitched, 212 batters struck out, including 55 looking and wins with a 23-8 record. The 5-9 freshman is a native of Lamar. The Gorillas open MIAA Tournament play on Thursday, April 30, at 5 p.m., against Washburn at the Blue Valley Recreation Complex in Overland, Park, Kan. All-MIAA awards will be announced at the tournament opening ceremony at 4:30 p.m. a bucket, where the winners will be drawn. Players put a quarter in the plastic bucket for each paddle they want to hold up. Players can pay for one, some or all of their paddles. Only paid for paddles are eligible to win the item being auctioned off at the time. The host then pulls a chip from the bucket and whoever has their number called, wins the item. If the winning number is an unpaid for paddle, the host will draw again until a winner is found. From there, the process starts all over again. A paddle is good the entire night, as long as the player puts a quarter in the bucket. As the concept of a pad- dle party may be confusing to some, there will be a couple of practice rounds held before the actual auction begins. Cheerleaders will be selling paddle certificates to the event. Certificates are $15 for a burger meal and five paddles. Those wishing to play should bring their certificates Friday, May 15, to pick their paddles. On the night of the event, paddles will be $3 each or four for $10. Save your quarters and come join the fun. For information call Nicole Niehoff at 417-8803467; Cody Brewer, 417681-1158 or Samantha Niehoff, 417-300-9830. Tigers now 17-0 By CHRIS MORROW The Lamar Tigers ran their record to 17-0 last week when they knocked off a pair of Big 8 Conference rivals and Jasper last week. Senior right-hander Tripp Tucker tossed a complete game in Tuesday's 5-2 victory over visiting Monett while the Tigers offense staked him to an early lead, scoring all of their runs in the first two innings. Tucker scattered three hits, while walking only one and striking out nine. Offensively he helped his cause with a pair of singles in four at-bats and a pair of runs batted in. Tanner Phipps and Todd Morrow also had multiple hit games. The big blow was dealt in the first inning when Phipps led off the bottom of the frame by being hit by a pitch. Morrow's single was followed by one from Tucker and Sam Timmons then delivered a one out double as the Tigers went up 3-0. Lakin Hardman led off the second with a double and Phipps added a double that plated him. Phipps came around on a single by Morrow. Once again, he said that there really was no answer, but went on to say that this year's senior class especially separated themselves as far as he was concerned. Last year, Bailey had been offered a dif- ferent job and was at odds as to what to do. He stated that when making a decision such as this he would gather those he worked with, in order to provide him with their input. It just so happened that being a coach, the ones that he turned to were the 15 seniors that were involved in the football program. Together, they made a commitment to stick it out and the rest is history. Words of wisdom to the underclassmen from Coach Bailey were, “Don't let the monster of success eat you alive” and to the seniors he said, “Don't let winning state championships be the highlight of your life.” Following his speech the players were then presented one by one, as they received a copy of the poster, a lanyard and their state championship ring. Parents were then invited to join the players as the opened their box with the ring inside. Before the evening concluded, all of the seniors were called forward and presented Coach Bailey with a framed poster of themselves, along with him, commemorating the partnership that was forged in order to accomplish four years of winning state championships together. 6A • Wednesday, May 6, 2015 TAMKO www.lamardemocrat.com Lamar Democrat, Lamar, MO Wednesday, May 6, 2015 • 2015 Best in the community celebrated by Barton County Chamber SECTION B The Barton County Chamber of Commerce held its 21st Annual Awards Banquet, themed “Barton County Black Tie Affair” on Friday, April 17, at Memorial Hall in Lamar. This year’s banquet was sponsored by Lamar Bank & Trust Company, Thorco, Barton County Memorial Hospital, Say Cheez Photo Booth, ShowMe the Ozarks Magazine, US Bank, Barton County Electric Co-op, Legacy Farm & Lawn, Charles and Nancy Curless and Lamar Greenhouse and Florist. The banquet serves a multitude of functions – primary among them is to recognize the best in the community and business leaders in Barton County, as well as introduce new members to the chamber’s board of directors. Additionally, the event promotes revenue to fund many chamber events and programs throughout the year. The banquet was attended by 224 members of the chamber and community. It was organized by Events Coordinator Amy Willhite and her banquet committee consisting of Tara Parks, Rachel Martin of Stutesman Action Realty, Cindy McFadden of McFadden Land and Title and Diane Berris of Lamar Pizza Hut. Live music by the Linda Salas Jazz Band Project was enjoyed, as well as a cash bar by Lamar Country Club and the Say Cheez Photo Booth. A live auction was hosted by the Nance Auction House and nearly $1500 was raised in total. The individuals recognized at the event were voted on by nearly 1,000 individuals in the chamber’s online polling process. They are as follows: Andrea Hollstein of Farmer’s Insurance, past Donita McCullough, board president; Brian Griffith of Shelter Insurance in Lamar, inpictured with her coming board president and Amy Neher, representing members husband Bradley, at large, was voted as a new member on the board. County Strength Club, Business of the Year. BCSC wins Business of the Year Barton County Strength Club (BCSC) was honored by winning Business of the Year at the Barton County Chamber of Commerce awards ceremony held Friday, April 17. Coaches Jeremy and Ashley Augusta accepted the award on behalf of the members of the BCSC fitness family. Jeremy stated, “It is an amazing honor to be recognized in such a tremendous way”, adding, “BCSC isn’t simply a gym, it is a place where everyday people and community leaders alike come to increase their quality of life through health and fitness”. BCSC believes that not only are members increasing their own quality of life, but those in the community. During Christmas BCSC members had given gifts to every foster child in Barton County. When a family had a house fire, the BCSC members rose to the occasion by taking care of the children’s Christmas, as well as making a cash donation to the family. BCSC has been using the income received very wisely and instead of spending it on things that do members no good, the gym has been reinvesting it in to the members and the community. One of those ways is the gym now holds monthly community pizza parties for anyone that is hungry. No questions are asked and anyone can come and eat as much as they want. Last month BCSC fed over 40 pizzas to people who were hungry and the rest went to a local church to feed those children at their function, with anything left over intended to go to AOK. BCSC is about to begin construction on a running track and not only will it be a wonderful tool for the members, but it will also be open to the senior center members to come and use anytime they like. BCSC members are not about taking care of their own egos, but are focused on creating a better world around them, for everyone involved. The owners have a wonderful story about how they were directed to come to Lamar by God and they would love to share that story with anyone who would want to come and listen. Liberal Area Civic Group discusses Prairie Days LIBERAL-The Liberal Area Civic Group met for their monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 21, at the Barton Mutual Community Room. Eleven members were present at 7 p.m., when President Mary Toney called the meeting to order and asked for the reading of the minutes. After Sally Fast read the minutes, and with no changes to be made, the president declared them approved as read. Jacqui Nichols gave the treasurer's report, stating there was $6,452.06 in the checking account and $7,999.48 in a CD. Toney stated the membership drive ended with 25 paid members. She also stated that four scholarship applications had been received from the senior class of Liberal High School. She reported the winner would be announced at the awards assembly at the high school. Willis Strong shared his findings on attempting to reprint the "Strange Town of Liberal" book. Since the book will be printed from a copy, the quality of the photos may be an issue. Strong will continue to seek options and members are asked to locate any photos or earlier printings of the book which may provide a solution. Toney stated the city wide rummage sale will be held on June 6. Beth Bazal, representing the PTO, had contacted Toney about the PTO partnering with the Civic Group on this project. The PTO is interested in using the elementary school for booth space for individuals to set up their sale items. This would allow for a potentially larger event for the community and a sharing of costs. Those wishing to have their sale included in any advertising should contact Toney by May 26. With that information in hand, the city council’s Administrative Committee spent nearly two hours, April 30, to find ways of improving city workers’ wages. They finally reached a consensus on recommending to the full council two options. Option one would increase starting pay by $0.25 per hour with another $0.25 increase after a probationary period of 90 days. Option two would increase starting pay by $0.50 per hour with a second increase of $0.25 after the 90-day probation period. These increases would apply to starting pay for full time employees. They will also recommend a cost of living increase of two percent to all employees, except administrative personnel, effective July 1. Raises for administrative personnel will be on the committee’s agenda when it holds its next meeting on May 11. The matter of merit pay is also in need of a recommendation to the full council. Currently, Human Resources Director Ron Hager recommends those who qualify for merit raises. The committee felt that merit pay should be determined by a panel of three, rather than just one person. They agreed that the human resources director should be one of the three, but could not settle on who the other two members of the panel should be. This matter will also be on the committee’s agenda at its next meeting. 2B • Wednesday, May 6, 2015 www.lamardemocrat.com COMMUNITY Lamar Democrat, Lamar, MO Land use, a matter of priorities Job numbers decline in area in March By RICHARD COOPER Democrat staff writer During his career of many and varied endeavors, Will Rogers wrote thousands of newspaper columns. In one, he offered some sage advice about investments, “Buy land, they ain’t makin’ it no more.” With a finite supply, it stands to reason that it should be treated with a good deal of care because it must afford a place on which to live for human kind of today and for those of untold millennia of the future, to say nothing of the wildlife with which we share this planet. That leads directly to the question of what is the right way and wrong way to use it? The answer depends on who is using it. The preservationists would leave things as they are and lament the damage that has already been done. The conservationists would make use of the earth and its resources, but limit such activities to wise usage. They may be on to something, but that isn’t anything new, is it? Our 26th president, Theodore Roosevelt, championed wise usage over a century ago. Now, how do you enforce wise usage? That brings us to individual rights, and where you draw the line in the interest of the public good. An agency that is involved in drawing lines is the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). For some, the EPA falls short of protecting the environment, and for others it goes unreasonably too far. Our representative in Congress from this fourth district is a foe of the EPA, and would like to pull some of its enforcement teeth. Are there any examples of the wrong way to use the land? The best example is the years of the black blizzards of the early and middle 1930s in parts of western Kansas and Oklahoma, eastern Colorado, and northeastern New Mexico. With the vegetation removed and a severe Lamar Democrat/Richard Cooper Stacked piles of brush and trees, clearing the land for greater productivity, can be found throughout southwest Missouri and southeast Kansas. These two examples can be found in the 10-mile drive from Lamar to Missouri Highway 43. shortage of rainfall, the soil began moving when the high winds came. Could this happen again? So far, it hasn’t, at least not to the extent of the great dust storms of the ‘30s. However, if history repeats itself creating the same set of circumstances, it’s a little disturbing. There seems to be an increasing trend of clearing brushy areas and removing interior fences. An individual with the Soil Conservation Service says that trend actually goes back to the late ‘60s, and has been intensified more recently by the increased value of land. (Will Rogers was so right!) With the huge investment in land and equipment, those in agriculture must increase production in order to get all they can from the soil. The individual with the Soil Conservation Service added that agriculture is a business, and a huge one. The effort to get the most out of the land is not likely to change. Of course, irrigation has been instrumental in blunting the effects of drought, and likely promotes the clearing of more land. However, the water table is dropping lower and lower with the increase in irrigation. Among the problems that creates is the necessity for cities that use wells for drinking water to lower their water intakes deeper and deeper. Also, Missouri is not a water rights state, so wells can be drilled wherever people want them and property owners will allow them. The average annual rainfall in Barton County is 44 inches, and we hope that yearly figures continue near that amount. There are some programs that have been in place for many years to slow the loss of soil to wind and water erosion. Grassy waterways and terracing are among them, but how effective have they been in the long run? What incentives and changes are needed to improve soil conservation effectiveness? Land use raises many questions and forces difficult decisions based on priorities. Then, there is the matter of sufficient and suitable habitat for wildlife, but that is another story. Consumer price index and inflation for February JEFFERSON CITY-The average cost of a market basket of goods and services in the United States increased 0.2 percent in February, according to MERIC, the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center, a division of the Missouri Department of Economic Development. This information was distilled from statistics provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the Consumer Price Index for all urban consumers increased 0.2 percent between the January and February indices. There were increases in energy commodities (+2.1), used cars and trucks (+1.0), medi- cal commodities (+0.7), and tobacco and smoking products (+0.5) indices. Indices that decreased between January and February were energy services (-0.2), and medical care services (-0.2). Over the year, there were large increases in meats, poultry, fish, and eggs (+7.6), motor vehicle insurance (+5.6), and medical care commodities (+3.9) indices for February. Smallest price increases over the year were found in energy services (+0.9), and cereals and bakery products (+0.9) indices. The Consumer Price Index is based on prices of food, clothing, shelter, fuels, transportation fares, doctors’ and dentists’ ser- Income, continued from page 1B favorably with Missouri’s median income figure of $45,231. A look at surrounding Missouri counties reveals median household incomes not unlike that of Barton County. Dade County’s median figure is $33,536. Cedar County’s is still lower at $30,536. Vernon County is somewhat higher at $37,342. Jasper County, with the presence of Joplin, would seem to suggest a much higher median income figure. No so. It is somewhat improved, but comes in at $39,359. So, where are the higher incomes that push the statewide median figure to $45,231? Most of them are in the population centers of St. Louis and Kansas City. The highest is St. Charles County with $67,074, well ahead of Platte County that has a figure of $63,676. The next eight counties among the higher median income category are Clay, St. Louis (county), Andrew (in the St. Joseph area), Cass, Cole, Ray, Jefferson, and Warren. The median household income for each one of them is above $50,000. It may come as a bit of a surprise, vices, prescriptions drugs, and other goods and services that people buy for day-to-day activities. Prices are collected in 87 urban areas across the country (including Kansas City and St. Louis) from about 50,000 housing units and approximately 23,000 stores, hospitals, and other types of service establishments. The actual index is expressed as a number derived by comparing the current cost of goods and services to the cost of the same items between 1982 and 1984. The reference year is assigned a value of 100. Subsequent indices are expressed as a percentage of the base year. but Newton County reports a fairly impressive figure of $41,722. The lowest household income is found in Shannon County, deep in the Missouri Ozarks, with $25,684. The next nine on the low list are either in the Ozarks or the bootheel. With St. Louis County ranking fourth highest in the state, it might be interesting to see where the city of St. Louis ranks. Its median household income is only $32,576, noticeably less than that of Barton County. This would suggest that the higher paying jobs may be in the city of St. Louis, but the people who hold them live outside the limits of the city. The conference brought together board members from the CFO’s 46 regional affiliate foundations, which cover the entire southern portion of the state. Attending from Barton County Community Foundation were Jane Moyer, Dave Sorrick, Brad Williams and Nancy Curless. This year, volunteer leaders from Joplin to Perryville joined together under the theme of, “Building More Generous Communities.” A keynote panel focused on economic develop- ment and how philanthropy can play a role in driving jobs and stability in small towns. Those in attendance also were treated to lunch, music by an Evangel University jazz ensemble and break-out training sessions and presentations from CFO staff and peer groups about best practices for affiliate foundations. The highlight of the day was the closing awards ceremony, where several individual board members, as well as four Affiliate of the Year foundations, were honored. This year’s Affiliates of the Year were the Carthage Community Foundation, the Marshfield Area Community Foundation, the Truman Lake Community Foundation and the Dent County Community Foundation. Finally, the CFO also awarded the first ever Fred Lemons Award for board member achievement. Named for the late, founding president of the Lockwood Community Foundation, the first award went to Ron Giedd, a founding member of the Greater Seymour Area Foundation. Concerns voiced regarding CAFO By CAROLYN HEAD Dade County reporter GREENFIELD-The Dade County Commission was called to order by Presiding Commissioner Randy Daniel at 9 a.m. on April 6. Others present were Eastern Commissioner Dallas Maxwell, Western Commissioner David Rusch and County Clerk Melinda Wright. A legislature view from MAC was reviewed by the commission. The March 30 minutes were unanimously approved as written. On April 2, Commis- LAMAR-The above headline looks totally out of sync, and the writer of it needs to explain what looks like a classic example of a headline which is a contradiction within itself. Well, let’s begin. This year started with January receiving only 0.64 of an inch of precipitation. February produced just 0.52, and March improved a bit with 2.09, but that was still considerably below the long term average. For the first four months, we have received 6.45 inches, well below the average of 11.44, five inches to be exact. While March and April seemed to be rainy months, it was deceptive. March had measurable rainfall on 12 dates and April on 14. However, on all of those dates, the showers were light, and not a single one came anywhere close to measuring one inch. With a few days of warm sunshine and brisk winds, it will become very dusty. If the sunshine and winds continue into late spring and early summer, a drought will be at hand. April temperatures were above average. The highest during the month was 81 sioners Daniel and Maxwell met with Jason Gohn from Lawrence County. Gohn had some concerns about a proposed CAFO that may be constructed on MM Hwy., in Dade County. Gohn expressed concerns about water quality. A recent letter from health and senior services was shared by the commission. The financial statement from the extension was received and reviewed by the commission. Vicky Cole stopped by to discuss some property that she sold in Everton to David and Karen Reagan. Cole stat- ed that there is now about $3,000 owed in back taxes. She expressed concern about foreclosure from the City of Everton on back taxes, and if she would be involved. David Pendergrass stopped by to express concerns about right-of-way issues. The commission attended the County Connections meeting at Kim's Breadbasket. The commission traveled to check on a tin horn complaint on W. Dade 72. They also checked on a culvert complaint on W. Dade 22. The meeting adjourned, to meet again on April 13. ship, at the Lazy “P” Arena entrance. The tin horn had been damaged during recent bridge construction. Two verbal bids were accepted on the repair of the roof at the bank. Heath Roofing put in a bid for $5000 and Keatts Construction bid $2000. A motion was made and approved to accept the bid from Keatts Construction for $2000. Bids were opened by the commission for plat books and maps at 10 a.m. Bids were received from Mapping Solutions and Farm & Home. After reviewing the bids, the commission decided to unanimously accept the bid from Mapping Solutions. The commission traveled to check on a road complaint at S Dade 167 and on culverts at S Dade 175, N Dade 231 and E Dade 182. After reviewing the election and write-in results, the commission appointed Anita Bridges, Rick Todd, David Hailey and William Eldridge as members of the North Morgan Road District. They also appointed Steve Richter and James Asher to the Washington Township, Jason and Rachel Roark to Smith Township and Mike Woolley to Polk Township.
