This is an exciting time of change at First Church!
On Friday, May 22, 2015, we celebrated with six little graduates from our FUMPers
Preschool! Congratulations to Lauren Tolentino, Courtney Scott, Bryson McKnight,
Sophie Lok, Brandon Lok, and Annie Blay — all graduates of Ms. Sheri Helm’s 4year old class. Aren't they just adorable in their caps and gowns?!

On July 1, 2015, our new Associate Pastor, Kevin
Johnson, his wife, Annette, and their five children:
Seamus - 11, Julianna - 9, Rowan - 6, Teague - 4 and
Finlay - 1, arrive at First Church!
This past month we have also had to say goodbye to
our long time Nursery Attendant, Monique Roberg, who
is moving out of the area after twelve years of serving
us so faithfully at First Church. May God's blessings be
upon you and your family, Monique. Thank you for all
the babies you have rocked and the children you have
loved!
Whew! Like I said, a lot is changing at First Church, but
"for everything there is a season, and a time for every
matter under heaven." God is clearly up to something
at First Church! So hold on tight to the one who is our
Rock and enjoy the ride!
Please be in prayer for Kevin and his family as they
make the big move from Houston, Texas, to join our
First Church family in Gainesville, Florida.

Dear First Church,
Nonetheless, as a part of this transition process, I will
not be available to conduct any weddings, funerals, or
other pastoral functions for at least a year. After that
year, I will do the courtesy of deferring to your current
pastors at that time to extend such an invitation if such
a request arises. This professional custom and courtesy
among pastors allows each of us to transition well from
one pastorate to another. Rest assured, I will have
many such requests in Winter Haven to handle, and be
plenty busy in the life of St. John’s United Methodist
Church. Still, I will keep you in my prayers, and cherish
our time in ministry together.
This will be my last newsletter article as your Associate
Pastor. For the last years, we have shared many Godinspired moments as well as some heart-breaking
moments. Through it all, God remains faithful. Even, in
this bittersweet farewell, I want to acknowledge God’s
faithfulness to His people and His church. I know that
each pastor that is appointed to a church, brings his or
her unique gifts, and each church teaches that pastor
new lessons. No doubt, Kevin, your new Associate,
brings many gifts and graces for ministry with him. I
also suspect that his wife Annette will bring her own
unique gifts to ministry as well in the life of the church.
I also know they will experience, as a family, including
their five children, the joy of new relationships and a
new church family that you will offer them.
I want to particularly thank Pastor Sara for her
leadership and her willingness to mentor me during my
three years starting in ministry. I have learned so much
from her, and am thankful for her steadfast leadership
of First Church.
Alesia and I value the relationships we have formed
here in the last three years. You helped to carry us
through the difficult circumstance of losing our first
baby, David Sergei. You also have shared in our joy of
Daniel’s birth and my commissioning as a Provisional
Elder in the Florida Annual Conference. We are forever
grateful for your love, your prayers, and your support.
May the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, be with you
now and always.

Daniel Taylor Averill was born on May 1, 2015 at 9:03
p.m. He was seven pounds at birth. He was baptized on
May 31, 2015 at the 10:55 a.m. service with Rev. Sara
McKinley and Rev. Sue Haupert-Johnson, North Central
District Superintendent administering the sacrament of
baptism.
On June 30th, we will be moving to Winter Haven,
where I will serve St. John’s United Methodist Church
as Senior Pastor. Though we are leaving, we will carry
with us the memories and love of First United
Methodist Church of Gainesville in our hearts.

Karen Harris Receives Girl Scout Recognition

On Thursday, May 14, the Girl Scouts of Gateway Council paid tribute to five of Gainesville’s most accomplished
women whose professional achievements and community service have made lasting impacts to the Gainesville
area. Area business and civic leaders joined Girl Scouts of Gateway Council on May 14 at the Women Who Make A
Difference luncheon to honor the contributions of the following women:





Jane Adams, vice president of University Relations for University of Florida;
Karen Harris, M.D., M.P.H., president of North Florida Women’s Physicians of Gainesville;
Brittany Lee, vice president of Florida Blue Farms, Inc.;
Shaney Livingston, director of the Alachua County Library
District; and
Jane Muir, associate director of the Office of Technology
Licensing for University of Florida, director of UF Tech Connect
and director of the Florida Innovation Hub at UF.
The event was held at the Hilton UF Conference Center from
11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
“These extraordinary women demonstrate leadership and
stewardship for all, but most importantly, for today’s Girl Scouts,
who are our future leaders,” said Mary Anne Jacobs, chief
executive officer of Girl Scouts of Gateway Council. “Brittany,
Shaney, Karen, Jane Muir and Jane Adams are real-life role models our girls can learn from and emulate as they
grow into confident young women capable of making positive changes in their communities and the world.”
The dedication, vision and talents of the five honorees have far-reaching impacts on business, education,
medicine, youth mentoring, health, women’s leadership and beyond. Congratulations to our own Karen Harris!
What Are The Youth Doing This Summer?

The three-mile radius
around the church has the
highest poverty level in the
state of Louisiana. With our
service, we will not only repair homes but restore
hope to their community.
The youth will be going to
Warren Willis Summer Camp
in Leesburg this
summer, July 13th-18th.
Camp is always a
life changing experience that
helps our students to grow in
their faith. From praise time to skills to small group,
students will make friends and learn to see their
relationships with God in a whole new way.
These are just a couple of activities we have planned
for this summer. Check back to find out what else is
going on at Youth HQ and to see pictures from our
latest activities.
Another fun summer event will be our mission trip to
Baton Rouge, Louisiana! We will be serving at Revive
225, a mission based out of the First United Methodist
Church of Baton Rouge. It is a great opportunity for

Preschool. We are busy gearing up for the summer program as well as
planning for the upcoming school year.

Family Promise

Family Promise of Gainesville (formerly Interfaith
Hospitality Network) is an affiliate of the National
Family Promise program. There are over 160 affiliates
in the United States. With over 1,300 children,
women and men in Alachua county without a home,
over one-third (500+) are children under the age of
18. (www.alachuahomeless.com/acchh/fats.html). ;
The Family Promise of Gainesville program serves
homeless families with children with the support of

volunteers for the central program, as well as within
the congregations, are needed. Scheduling of host
weeks will begin soon.

Diabetes at the University of Florida College of
Medicine. According to Adam Gurske, President of the
Board of Directors of Family Promise of Gainesville,
Family Promise hopes to begin accepting families again
around mid-July, once training has been done and a
case manager has been hired. Before opening the
doors, finalized commitments from two additional Host

Jane came to us calm and well organized. She had a
plan. Her kids were enrolled at Holy Trinity’s preschool
through help from the Early Learning Coalition. And
she had just started a new job as a clerical worker at a
construction company. But she hadn’t yet been paid
and was getting desperate.
She asked us for $25 to pay for the lock change. COM
volunteer Bill Andrews drove her to the post office and
we used the church credit card to pay the $25. We
gave her a gas card and a sack of canned goods. Mary
Kilgour went to Wal-mart the next day to buy Jane’s
daughter some toddler pull-ups. Mary called her to tell
her she could pick up the Pull-ups on Thursday during
Jim Knights’s and Ruth Henderson’s hours. They gave
her a second gas card because she had misplaced the
first one and her tank was on empty.
RECOGNIZING MOTHERS
AMONG THE HOMELESS
If you missed the Community Outreach Mission
Moment on Mother’s Day, read the following version:
Everyone knows it’s difficult to be a mother, especially
a good mother. We had a client come into the
Community Outreach Ministry in late April who struck
the COM team as a good mother.
I believe she left our church with a full tank of
appreciation and hope to get her through the month,
when the worst of her problems would resolve
themselves.
Let’s call her Jane. She had left an abusive marriage,
taking her two children with her. Her youngest child
has seizures. They moved into Peaceful Paths but that
facility was so crowded that they had to sleep on a
couch. So they moved to Grace Marketplace.
Please be generous in your support for the Community
Outreach Program. There are many other clients like
Jane and her children who need our help.

But Jane got help along the way and was able to move
into an apartment. Her disabled child has SSI and
therefore Medicaid. And they get food stamps. She
took her husband to court to get him to pay child
support, and he was obliged to do so. By the way, he
has a well-paying position in a large company in
Putnam County.
The hitch came toward the end of the month.
Unbeknownst to her, the apartment she had moved
into in April required her to pay $25 to the post office
to get the lock changed on her mailbox. By late April,
she didn’t have $25 and in the meantime the post
office had returned to sender the first child support
check and communications regarding the SSI check
and food stamp. The prospect of the same thing
happening in May was looming.

"Tales My Father Told Me"
Saturday, June 20
The United Methodist Men's Club will hold its June
meeting on Saturday, June 20, in Fellowship Hall at
8:00 a.m. for breakfast. The members are asked to
share a favorite story that their father or father-figure
may have shared with them as they were growing
up. Some of our fathers were immigrants to this
country, some of our fathers died at a young age and a
grand-parent or uncle may have become the fatherfigure, some of our fathers taught by example instead
of by words, but whatever the circumstances, there is
usually at least one good story that comes out of a
father-son relationship. And so dig deeply, and relate
"A Tale that My Father Told Me."
The third Sunday in June, which is designated as
Father's Day, became a permanent national holiday in
1972 when President Richard Nixon signed the motion
into law. A special day set aside for fathers had
occasionally been observed in the early 1900's after
Mother's Day had been established. After a mining
accident in December of 1907 in West Virginia that
killed over 300 men, including 250 fathers, an
observance of Father's Day was held in Fairmont, W. V.
at the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church
South on July 5, 1908. And two years later in Spokane,
WA, Sonora Dodd pushed for a father's day celebration
in June, 1910, at the local YMCA in honor of her father
who had raised six children by himself after the death
of his wife. In the following decades, celebrations of
this type were sporadic, and it was not until the 1930's,

Shirley Vogt welcomed 13 people and thanked the
Hostesses, Mary Singley and Betty O’Byrne. Since we
did not meet in April due to the Spring Arts Festival,
April birthday greetings were extended to Mary Broske
and Barbara Bundshu and May birthday greetings were
extended to Mary Britt, Sally Cravens, Ray Daniel, and
Carl Bogar. Our concerns were for Betty Lee, Cindy
Warner, Ollie Craven, Betty Folsom’s family and her
Great Grandson Fisher Abrams.
The program was from the board game LOGO. It’s a
good memory game about labels and advertising. I
asked the question to the group and if anyone knew the
answer they called it out. From the question I asked I
found out that this group has very good memories.
Betty O’Byrne read Matthew 7:24-27, then led a
devotional from Seasons of Salt, Blow the House Down.

Cleo Abbott and Shirley Vogt.
$43.00 was collected for the Helping Hands Men’s Clinic.
Shirley asked the group about offering a scholarship for
1 or 2 people to attend Camp Weed Retreat in October.
After a discussion Cleo Abbott made a motion to do so.
Joan Van Winkle 2nd and everyone agreed. There are still
rooms available for anyone in the church that is
interested in attending the Retreat. See Mary Broske for
more info.

Children’s Ministry

During the month of May, the children have really
enjoyed the praise music element added during Sunday
School at 9:45. Mr. Dustin starts off Kids’ City Sunday
School with 15 minutes of praise music. The children
then have a lesson lead by our faithful volunteer
Charlene Smith. The month of June will mark the
beginning of our Children’s Church in the Chapel during
the 10:55 service. The children will begin the service in
the sanctuary and then after the children’s chat, head
over to the Chapel. Lenora Rousseau will lead the praise
music and the children will help lead everything
else! They will collect an offering, acolyte, read
scripture verses, play instruments, and even help lead a
sermon! See you there.
June. This includes Nursery and Sunday School helpers,
Family Promise, Scouts, Preschool, Staff, and any other
ministry that works with children. There are 8 time slots
to choose from. Each session is one hour long and you
only need to attend one session. Snacks provided at all
sessions. Lunch provided during Sunday afternoon

WELCOME TERESA DORMAN
It is with great pleasure that we welcome Teresa
Dorman as our new Nursery Attendant, effective May
31. Teresa and her husband Bill have five children
Katherine 21, Kristina 20, Michael 16, Kimberly 14, and
Jack 9. Teresa’s work experience with children is
impressive. She currently owns and manages her own
home based childcare center and has been doing so for
over twenty years! Her other work experiences include
being a nanny, a pre-school teacher, an Assistant
Director of Kinder Haus pre-school, and a nursery
volunteer at her previous church in Sarasota, Florida.
Please welcome her and her family with open arms and
support her in her ministry to our children and families
here at First Church.
Blast to the Past July 6-10. From 8:30-12:30 ages 412th grade will go on an amazing time-travel journey to
experience stories that show the INCREDIBLE, FAITHFUL,
INVINCIBLE, UNCONDITIONAL, and REAL love of God.
